Cut off in their prime

Granville finally imagines that his luck is in with the milk woman, but his biggest problem as ever is his uncle Arkwright. For getting shot of him from under their roof, for even a split second would be nothing short of miraculous.

But there might actually be a way around him, which revolves around Arkwright's unrequited feelings for nurse Gladys Emanuel.

I am a southerner so I have no idea whether, Arkwright is in any way typical of Yorkshire blokes of his generation. By that I mean being a tight wad, or as he would doubtless put it "fiscally frugal".

But either way he won't trust Granville, an inch with his shop, let alone all of his worldly goods.

Which is why he insists, on endeavouring to take it with him. Every last vintage silver coin of it, Arkwright really has only him self to blame.
