- Buz Murdock: [In the Sheriff's office] Is there something we can do?
- Lotti Montana: Sure. Next time a girl tells you there's a better place for dinner down the road, listen to her. Goodbye, Buz. Tod.
- Daniel: When a rider relinquishes herself to a bolting horse, there's nothing to be done. Nothing but wait, and keep on praying.
- Buz Murdock: You know, we coulda left you on the road back there like a wet Persian rug.
- Lotti Montana: I've been stepped on before.
- Buz Murdock: Ohh, self-pity.
- Lotti Montana: Oh, I can't spell "uncle" let alone cry it. I just face the facts. The world's split up into two camps: men that buy and men that get bought.
- Buz Murdock: Y'know, I smell smoke. Old grudges maybe burnin'?
- Lotti Montana: You know, you and I could get to be a danger to each other.
- Lotti Montana: [Beholding the starlit sky] Oh, look at it now. Daniel says it's a measureless blackboard. The stars are punctuation marks put there by the angels kept after school writing God's name 500 times.
- Tod Stiles: Think back, Buz. She didn't really tell us anything last night. You kept asking her all those questions, she just talked between the lines, remember? She has a way of not answering right out, and just keeps looking at you like she's straining to hear something that hasn't been said.
- Buz Murdock: You ran like Lotti ran, except nobody was chasing you.
- Richard Crown: Nobody? Only the worst hunter of them all - my conscience.
