- A stubborn farmer constantly clashes with his rebellious son.
- Tod and Linc, in the St Paul, Minnesota area, find work with an eccentric farmer. He is at odds with his son about using any new farming ideas and actually uses a shotgun for noise to scare birds away from his crop. The son and he escalate the battle between them over the possible use of the farm as the site of a motel.—dubchi
- While looking for work in Minnesota, Tod and Linc are able to get jobs on Mike Donato's raspberry farm largely on Linc's surprising knowledge of growing raspberries. But what Tod and Linc initially don't and couldn't know about the work is the dysfunctional nature of the relationship between Mike and his adult married son, Tony Donato, which affects how the farm operates. Although the farm belongs to Mike, it will eventually be passed down to Tony, the two who do not agree on anything with regard to the growing of raspberries or the long term nature of the property. Many on the outside see Mike's way of farming unsustainable while Mike does things his way - the way it's always been done - or the high way. Mike and Tony's relationship is typified by arguments followed by yelling followed by physical fights, which is the only way Mike knows how to resolve issues. While Tod admires Mike's tenacity, Linc, on the other hand, sees a bully of a father who is driving away his son from his life. While Mike and Tony truly do love each other, their current trajectory looks to lead them to estrangement unless something changes.—Huggo
