- Number Six wakes up to find the village deserted and seizes his opportunity to make a raft and escape. He eventually gets back to London and reports to his superiors. However, it's not long before he is rather cruelly returned to the village where Mrs. Butterworth, a middle-aged lady whom he met in London, is wearing a Number 2 badge and preparing to serve him a birthday cake bearing six candles.—don @ minifie-1
- Number 6 awakes one morning to find the Village completely deserted and slightly run down in appearance. A thorough search reveals no one to be there and so he sets about preparing his escape. He fells several trees and builds a raft that takes him out to sea where he is rescued by two men. Several weeks after his departure, he makes it to land to find that he has made in to England. Once in London he finds that his flat is occupied by a Mrs. Butterworth, who also happens to be driving his car. He returns to work where he is able to estimate the geographic area containing the Village (somewhere south of Spain and Portugal and west of Morocco). He participates in a reconnaissance flight but it doesn't end quite as he expected it to.—garykmcd
