An old war horse who refuses to be pensioned off.

Detective Royce (Jackie Cooper) is at the age when he could retire from the force. But he loves his job and cannot bring himself to quit. At the same time, he works a second job as an insurance investigator, with the department's permission, and can barely make ends meet. Now his second job wants him to work for them full time...and Royce can't bring himself to change the way things are. But at the same time, his partner is even older and soon has a heart attack....and it makes Royce think.

This is interesting in that the director of the episode is Tony Lo Bianco...a fine actor who appeared in seven episodes himself. And, this is the third of four appearances by Cooper.

So is it any good? Yes, but not great. Much of it is because it wasn't 100% clear what the purpose of the episode was...apart from how grossly underpaid cops can be. But still, it is interesting and worth seeing.

I did not expect such a character for Jackie Cooper. As you can guess, he plays here a cop who, besides his regularly job, is also an insurance investigator. I did not expect this kind of scheme from a Jo Wambaugh story. But why not, you have here quite interesting plot, with not so many action sequences. I repeat, Jackie Cooper is very surprising here. You may take a good look for this episode. Tony Lo Bianco directed it; he who played in some of the épisodes of this famous TV show. Luke Askew is also exquisite in a character which suits him like a glove. In resume, you have here the typical action flick from the seventies. I won't forget the image of cop Cooper with a match between his lips, as Sterling Hayden in Andre de Toth's CITY IS DARK. Another great performance for another story.
