Bret Maverick
- Bret Maverick: Well, that's the luck of the Mavericks. You ask for a lawyer and you get a fortune teller.
- [first lines]
- Bartender: What's your pleasure, mister?
- Bret Maverick: Well, generally, it's poker but right now I'm a little thirsty. Nice little town you got here.
- Bartender: It's a friendly place. A little too friendly, if you ask me. Ain't had a good fist-fight here in over a week.
- Bret Maverick: thought I saw a little ruckus outside.
- Bartender: A gunfight ain't no good for watchin', it's over too soon.
- Bret Maverick: Well, I'm a peaceful man myself, I get all the action I want at the poker table.
- Sheriff Lem Watson: Been holding a cell for you for quite awhile, Maverick.
- Bret Maverick: Well, I guess that beats dangling from a limb of a tree. But not much.
- [last lines]
- Melanie Blake: Look... what I borrowed from the sheriff's office. We can start working our scheme right away, as soon as we find another town with a river.
- Bret Maverick: Melanie, No!
- Melanie Blake: Now I know where there's another town with a river. Um, Laramie.
- Bret Maverick: No! Absolutely, No!
- Melanie Blake: But, Bret, do you know what I went through to get this book?
- Bret Maverick: I don't care.
- Melanie Blake: But, this is a brilliant scheme.
- Sheriff Lem Watson: The people of Medicine Bow want me to thank you for gettin' back their money, and they asked me to tell you that they'd be willin' to part with some of it at most any poker table in town... if you'd care to hang around for a while.
- Bret Maverick: Uh, no thanks. When you mention that word "hang", I get itchy feet.
- Sheriff Lem Watson: So you're Bret Maverick.
- Bret Maverick: I'm beginning to wish I wasn't.
- Sheriff Lem Watson: You'll wish you wasn't when the law gets through with ya.
- Sheriff Lem Watson: Your trial's gonna be a short one.
- Bret Maverick: Then what?
- Sheriff Lem Watson: Then... they'll hang ya.
- Bret Maverick: But you, you stopped a lynch mob from doin' that outside.
- Sheriff Lem Watson: They was tryin' to lynch ya, a legal hangin's different.
- Bret Maverick: Not to the hang-ee.
- Sheriff Lem Watson: I'll go call on Luke Abigor, see if he'll take ya on.
- Bret Maverick: Oh, Sheriff, don't tell him I got $4,000. I may be needin' some of it later.
- Sheriff Lem Watson: I don't know what for, town'll give ya a decent burial.
