This episode took place when crack was just becoming somewhat of a household word. many people still did not understand the seriousness of the problem. this was well written and really hit home on the devastation that this drug caused in so many families dealing with addiction and death.i would recommend, even in 2013, that this episode should be played for all young adults facing temptation and peer pressure and the effects this drug will have on their lives. excellent show!!! timeless!!! Carroll O'Connor and Geoffrey Thorne did an excellent job showing both the lack of knowledge and first hand experience of the devastation of crack.

Having caught this episode halfway through, I was surprised at the ending and got me considering to watch the rest of this series at a later point.
I won't spoil it for you, but be prepared, it's not the typical classic 80s drug episode ending full of narm, its way more darker and emotionally charged than what you expect and was one of the rare times a mainstream network TV series from this era hits all the right beats and emotional notes when it comes to tackling a serious subject like this.
This is one of those rare very special episodes that portray drug abuse as the horrific thing it really is and not so corny, it morphs into nostalgic cheese fodder later down the line.

The best episode in this wonderful series. Wilson Sweet is my favorite character on the show. His acting was perfect here. Very special guest star was absolutely unbelievable in her role as a young addict. Kudos to you Dana. Such a wonderful actress and stunningly beautiful woman. I'm shocked you didn't become a superstar. My oldest son is an addict so this episode hits very close to home. The parents show classic enabling and denial like most of us do. Highly recommend this show to anyone.

When this episode was first aired crack was a new sensation and it s effects were
first being felt. I knew a few people who used it myself and in one case the results were tragic.
This episode focused on the effects of crack addiction on Dana Barron and her parents James Sutorius and Carrie Snodgrass and their other kids. Barron delivers a frightening portrait of a junkie in puberty.
Geoffrey Thorne who takes a personal interest in the family has some of officer Wilson Sweet's moments in In The Heat Of The Night.
