The Deadliest Game

Warning: Spoilers
They spent some money on this episode, taking "Get Smart" out on location as Max and 99 row to an island in search of a KAOS killer, played by Harold Gould. Unfortunately he gets them first. Rather than just kill them, he decides to hunt the CONTROL agents and even gives them a head start. If they can survive until sundown, he'll let them go (99 has a standing offer to stay alive and live with the KAOS killer). Thus begins an exciting chase across the island involving punji sticks, and an "Indiana Jones" like bridge across a gorge (in retrospect, this may have been a leftover set from the NBC "Tarzan" series that aired at the time). Gary Nelson outdoes himself directing, making this episode both thrilling and funny. There's also a great gag when Max and 99 are getting their secret weapons. Carlson shows them a device that makes a lot of motion but has no apparent function. When Max asks what it does, Carlson explains that it merely distracts the enemy as they try and figure out what it does, leaving Max and 99 to escape.

Hard Targets

This episode is an honorable mention, it's "Get Smart" doing "The Most Dangerous Game". Not a lot I can say, there is good comedy as usual but what makes this episode good is in the suspense hunt that takes place.

I really like how you're on your toes as you are seeing both Max and 99 hunted down like dogs literally. You are constantly hoping both Max and 99 can not just outrun the hunters but also outwit them.

There is a lot of physicality in the episode as we see both Max and 99 are just running like hell, getting down, dirty, tired. Really liked the rope bridge scene which is a common trope in the of the old adventure serials. Either they both cross the bridge and risk death or don't cross and die, yeah great options.

Can both Max and 99 win this game, well you'll just have to wait and see.
