THE GALLANT MEN: One Puka Puka 1963

"The Gallant Men" was an American television series that debuted on ABC in the fall of 1962. It followed a company of US soldiers from the Sept 1943 invasion at Salerno, and their battles up the boot of Italy. The series ran for a total of 26 episodes during 1962-63. Leading the cast is Robert McQueeney, who also narrates the story. McQueeney is a newspaper reporter who follows the company on their exploits. (Sort of an Ernie Pyle clone) The rest of the regulars are played by, William Reynolds, Robert Ridgely, Francis X Slattery, Eddie Fontaine, Roland La Starza, Roger Davis and Robert Gothie. There are the standard types sprinkled throughout, the joker, the card sharp, the loner etc. This is the 22nd episode.

In this episode, Sgt Slattery is in charge of a patrol sent out to set up an observation post in a destroyed Italian village. While checking to make sure there are no German's lurking around, they discover they are not alone. Also in the village is a group of Japanese American soldiers who already have an o.p. set up.

Slattery takes an instant dislike to the Lt, in charge Poncie Ponce. He warns the Lt. that his sloppy radio discipline while have the German radio detection boys homed in on their location. And to drive home the point, several dozen German artillery rounds soon arrive. Then a large patrol of German troops arrive to have a look around.

Everyone from both outfits high tail it to the cellar to hide from the German patrol. After the German's pass through, the American take up their just vacated observation posts. They spot a group of German tanks outside the village and call in their own artillery to deal with the Nazi armor. The artillery soon makes short work of the Germans who are soon in full retreat.

However the first group of German's has made a return visit. A quick brawl soon has the square-head types all captured and locked in the cellar. The group also manages to dispose of a lone German tank that wanders into the village.

Also in the cast is Mako, George (Mr Sulu)Takei, Sandy McPeak and in an un-billed bit, Eric Braeden. Braeden would hit the big time in the mid 60's series RAT PATROL. Poncie Ponce is best known for his 124 episode run in the popular 60's Private Detective series, HAWAIIAN EYE.

After several rather dull episodes, this one delivers with plenty of action etc. A pretty good episode if I say so myself.
