    Pygmalion and Elly

Jed Clampett thinks that if Elly May ain't married by the time she is 18 years old. She would be regarded as an old crow.

Has he not realised just how Sonny Drysdale is? He is wooing Elly May with his lyre. He regards Elly May as the bucolic beauty who needs a cultural metamorphosis.

Sonny will be Professor Higgins while Elly May will be his Pygmalion. He plans to take Elly May from Tobacco Road to Park Avenue.

While Granny thinks that her own love charms will ignite their relationship. Miss Hathaway such love charms are poppycock.

Well Louis Nye is a breath of fresh air as Sonny. Just contrast that with the scene where Jethro wonders where the noise is coming from when someone rings the housebell. Those jokes have become lame by this point.

    WHY WE LOVE SONNY DRYSDALE.

Actually, why we love Louis Nye. He was a terrific comedian, and producer Paul Henning chose wisely and gave him one of the most prime roles -- Elly's first boyfriend. Although they never got hitched, it sure was fun while it lasted. Perhaps the most original if not OUTRAGEOUS episode YET, and again, if only it was in color.

Henning cleverly took some ideas from George Bernard Shaw? Sonny Drysdale (Nye) gets himself into a PYGMALION comedy of errors; Elly playing the "supposedly" lower class lady? (Eliza Doolittle, minus the cockney accent) to Nye's Mr. Higgins, the brash aristocrat who wishes to change her ways? Are you serious?

If anyone here changes, it's Sonny -- your resident kook on steroids! Also Mrs. Drysdale is one heck of a doting mother, spoiling this guy rotten to the core. Put this all together and you have a very funny story, exceptionally directed by Richard Whorf. Why he was one of the best tv directors. The scenes between Jed and Granny, just by themselves, trying to sort out the insanity, is memorable. And don't miss Granny's love charms?

Did you catch it? Is Miss Jane trying to smooch-a-kiss with Jethro in one scene?

Catch Granny giving Jed a haircut with a soup bowl on his head at the beginning. Definitely borrowed from the THREE STOOGES. Look for Duke, the bloodhound, who appears in many scenes here. Duke was cast in 48 episodes, right to the end of the series.

A gotsta' see for Louis Nye and Donna Douglas, who is so cute. Nye guested in six episodes through 1966.

SEASON 1 EPISODE 10 remastered black and white CBS dvd box set. Season 1 through 5 are on dvd. Seasons 6 through 9 are expected to be released on blu ray in 2027.

    • Quotes

Jane Hathaway: Granny, Mr. Clampett tells me that you've conjured up some sort of love charm for Elly May.

Elly May Clampett: Right chere it is, made out o' old secret stuff.

Jane Hathaway: That is ludicrous, irrational, sophomoric, and pure hokum.

Daisy Moses: [Granny laughs] You didn't even guess one ingredient.
