Warning: Spoilers
I am going to review this show from childhood perspective:

As a kid I used to enjoy watching Robotboy it was one of my favourite shows alongside Ben 10, The Batman and Pokemon. But as I got older I started to grow tired of this show and just got fed up.

Even though the villians in my opinion were just plan silly.

The good elements are probably Robotman, his transformation sequence, the different colours of robot boy and Robotgirl.

The human characters are just annoying especially Gus, Tommy, Lola and Tommy's brother.

It's definitely better than Supernoobs, Johnny Test and Teen Titans Go! but it's not the best show to come out of Cartoon Network I am afraid.

OK, So It's Not Even Anywhere Close to Being a Masterpiece But Better Than Most Crap Nowadays
blbbg120 June 2008
Believe it or not, this show isn't horrible, but not as good as other shows like Ben 10 or Avatar. First of all, the idea of a robot who fights crime and learns the ways of life, doesn't that sound like it's been done several times already? Anyways, I'm really shocked that people rate this lower than a 3, does it really suck that bad!? I don't think so, but it's not going to blow you away or become your favorite show unless you really love shows about robots. Yeah the jokes are crude and there are some pretty inappropriate moments and the way they portray the villains and bullies is either surreal or for dark comic relief. Anyways I do like the visual style to the show, it reminds me of several other cartoons from the 90s (Dexter's Lab, The Powerpuff Girls, etc.) and it's got a lot of older references from the 60s. (Astroboy, Star Trek, etc.) A word of advice, please at least see this show once and if you don't like it then that's OK, this show is not for everyone but saying this show is horrible is basically saying that the Europeans have not talent when it comes to animation and this show is not racist either. So with that said, please check out Robotboy. Hey, at least it's better than Out of Jimmy's Head and Squirrel Boy which neither of those two shows have a fanbase unlike Robotboy.

If Tezuka Osamu and Craig McCracken had a baby, that baby would be Robotboy.
stephenwells-2559912 August 2021
This show has a lot going for it. It has excellent animation for a mid-2000s Cartoon Network show and its fighting choreography is on par with The Powerpuff Girls and Samurai Jack. It also has hilarious physical humour, with the sufferings of characters like Gus and Dr. Kamikaze drawing plenty of laughs. I also like the premise: the series is basically an homage to/parody of Tezuka's legendary anime franchise Astro Boy. And, of course, Robotboy himself is an adorable protagonist, providing an enjoyable mix of childish naivety and violent brutality.

However, there are some issues that hold the series back. Firstly, although its physical humour is great, the show uses too many fart jokes. I personally have never found fart jokes to be funny, and reliance on that sort of humour is often a sign of comedic block. In addition, the character of Gus can get EXTREMELY obnoxious when he isn't getting beat up (fortunately, he gets beat up a lot).

Secondly, the show isn't exactly "original". As I said, the series is clearly parodying Astro Boy, something that other shows had already done, while its art style is so reminiscent of The Powerpuff Girls that I would have thought that Craig McCracken or Genndy Tartakovsky were involved except that the writing isn't up to their standards (one of the show's ads even drew attention to the similarity by having Robotboy cosplay as Bubbles). Some people also accuse it of plagiarising My Life as a Teenage Robot, but honestly the two shows don't have much in common aside from both being Astro Boy parodies.

Lastly, I feel that the show overused Robotboy's "super transformation". Having a more powerful form for use against tough opponents is cool and all, but it starts to lose its impact when it is used in nearly every single episode.

So, do I recommend it? Well, if you like Cartoon Network's action-comedy shows like The Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Kids Next Door, etc., or if you like Nickelodeon's My Life as a Teenage Robot, then you'll probably like Robotboy. However, if you're expecting this show to match the writing quality of Craig McCracken and Genndy Tartakovsky then you're going to be disappointed. And if you expect this series to tackle the premise of a robotic child with the same maturity and depth as Tezuka Osamu, then Robotboy will definitely let you down.

I give it a 7/10. It's good, but it's no masterpiece. The fact that the whole series is available for free on YouTube definitely makes it worth checking out, however.

An animated show that was difficult to decide if it was good or bad. (A review from an ex-fan of Robotboy)
Theraxorterminate27 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I'm going to go through with lots of words for you to understand the difficulties of this show that became pretty popular but having problems with those who called it a rip-off. My English isn't 100% perfect but hopefully you understand.

First off I'm going to give my opinion about the setting of the show: The Show and the Robot: This used to be my number 1 favorite show when I was younger about when I was 12 years old and when I saw the very first episode on CN I felt in love with Robotboy immediately. But the biggest reason why I watched Robotboy was because of Robotboy himself. His cute design and when he super-activated to use it for more superior battles, I loved the design of his third alternative mode. I never wanted to miss one episode, and yes I became a huge fan of Robotboy and wanted to draw him and talk about him with my friends. At the same time it was only a matter of time when I got to find out that the show was ironically disliked somewhere 2008 or 2009. I can tell you, it wasn't the best cartoon of all time. In fact there were a lot of flaws in the show and sometimes I'm wondering if the creators and animators were stressed during on working on the episodes.

The characters: The main characters were good except for one character that all of us fans including me despised a lot: Gus who IMO was very irritating to have and they should've removed him right at the beginning of the show. He was nothing but a good-for-nothing. But I can understand that the show was aimed for children and the creators probably thought that it would've been necessary to have an irritating friend to ruin the plans, the seriousness of the show and to make the children laugh at Gus whenever he entered some of his unlucky moments. Nuff Said.

Tommy was the perfect kid but I always felt bad for him to have a family who didn't understand him well at the times which also was one of the flaws of the show. If only his parents (especially his sport-crazy dad) understood him for once! His big brother was also unnecessary to have.

Lola was also great and she was definitely a necessary character. Although there have been questions about what country Lola is from in the beginning. I'm not sure but I also want make sure that there is no racism in this show.

The bullies were pretty much stereotypical to become bad people to Tommy.

The villains: The villains were varied many times and I believe that the only great villain on this show was Robotboy's big brother Protoboy. He was serious and really wanted to get rid of Robotboy once and for all after when he technically got destroyed by Robotboy on a fight but then returned with absolutely no explanation how he survived or got repaired (another flaw.)

But what about the art of the show? The art direction was pretty cheap if you look at it. I don't mean to be disrespectful but the setting on the town and other environments had simple looks.

The Jokes: There wasn't so many funny jokes on this show, they didn't make sense sometimes and was crude at the times.

The episodes: Many episodes were pretty much the same about something bad happens and Robotboy is there and kick the villain's butts. Now many people are wondering what exactly made the show so popular. It was because of Protoboy but mostly known was: Robotgirl a female version of Robotboy. I had nothing against her at all she was cute but I can understand that many fans wanted to see her in many other episodes, sadly she didn't. And what's worse is that she didn't appear until the second last episode. If only she appeared on the other episodes before the second last.

Now I'm going to give you the info's about the rip-offs people believed and how I got through with Robotboy. This year I felt a little bit ashamed of liking Robotboy after all the bad critics it has received and many pointless thoughts written by haters who should rather ignore instead of trolling on the web about how awful the show was for them. Trust me, I have seen many haters and they disgust me. I can understand that people compared this show to other shows such as: Astro Boy, Megaman, MLAATR and even Fosters (the biggest controversy about Fosters was because of the design between Tommy and Mac.) Come on people and haters maybe these were the creator's inspirations and tried to create them all into one show (except for Fosters which was only one inspiration). It might look like a child version of MLAATR but there are differences trust me. Don't watch this show if you believe this contains many rip-offs and plagiarism from other shows since this isn't so popular anymore except on Deviant Art were there are awesome arts based on Robotboy. Robotboy inspired me to create videos to YouTube and use clips from different episodes and put them together to become music videos and mash-ups.

Am I protecting the show? No, I don't watch Robotboy anymore but I feel so bad about how the show came to a bad end. I'm neither forcing you to watch this show, this isn't for teens neither adults, try to remember that this show and its characters, the setting and the stories are aimed for young children. Do yourself a favor: Take a look at the show whenever you have time with your children and try to find out if you find it appropriate for your children. Its not be greatest cartoon of all time but not the worst either. I hope you understood this message and have a great day.

Lame
Rectangular_businessman14 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This was such a lame cartoon.

I am so glad that this show is gone, because there wasn't any single good thing about it.

First of all, it was only a bad rip-off of "My Life as a Teenage Robot" (Which was a rip-off of "Astroboy" to begin with) but somehow this managed to be much worse than that cartoon.

All the characters from this series were bland stereotypes, and all of them were incredibly unlikeable and boring.

The stories from each episode were bland, boring and forgettable at best, with many unfunny and lame attempts of humor and many repetitive situations.

Even the art from this series was bad, with all the characters looking like they were rejected extras from one episode of "The Powerpuff Girls". In many ways, this is what "Robotboy" is very deep inside: A pathetic "Powerpuff Girls" wannabe which is best forgotten.

Again good idea is destroyed with bad characters.
Wine-Minister15 July 2007
When I first watched Robotboy, I found it fresh and interesting, but then I noticed, that with each episode this show is trying to teach you how to behave yourself, what is good/bad. Episodes became predictable. And main characters are not interesting. Again we see a hyper-smart boy, beaten by his older brother, parents who don't understand their kid, and his friends: girl and fat boy. Also this show has no logic. A super-modern robot who works on two AA-size batteries, and can use a lot of weapons. But the biggest problem is the difference between activated and super-activated modes. We see two different robots, and it declines main idea of the show: "Robot must learn how to behave himself in human society"

Yes , it might not be as good as things like Regular Show , Teen Titans (2003) or Adventure Time , but it's decent.

Fear the lack of originality and facial expressions
therubixtheory4 February 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Anyone notice that Tommy only has 3 facial expressions.

1. The angry eyes look he gives every enemy. 2. The holding of the hands to face, mouth agape and frightened eyes. 3. The smiling Tommy Turnbull.

I have to say that i pretty much hate this show, i don't watch it but it's like Code Lyoko, we've all watched at least one, i must say that this show is borderline racist, uninteresting and pointless.

every episode ends with robotboy winning, except for one exception when robotboy basically let this overly geeky freakazoid fly away on a jetpack.

The jokes are pretty crude too, i think it's mostly people saying the word "Suck" or farting, i think the bullies of the show are quite shocking too.

Isn't there one that hides a bowling ball under his hate, and the other uses a chain, for god sake, what kind of school is he going to. Not to mention his older brother, who is borderline psychopathic and has no other character qualities.

The whole show i feel is ripping off megas XLR and Fosters. Like you could say the trio of coop, jamie and Kiva, as well as Robotboy being similar to Megas where he beats everyone no matter what the odds and he's free spirited despite being a robot.

There is simply no appeal to this show, i'm surprised that it's still running.

If you love yourself, you will avoid this.
DakedoJones26 August 2007
Now, I like sci-fi cartoons. However, when "Robotboy" appeared in Canada in late 2006, I watched the premiere and was inevitably appalled. The characters are generic and stereotypical (Do they REALLY need to make an African-American man wear tiger-stripe print clothing and speak in a Jamacian accent? WHY are all the Asian characters vibrant yellow and squinting? Does the mother HAVE to have big thighs and chest and constantly complain?) to the point where things become unrealistic, predictable, gross and sometimes disturbing. There are heavy similarities to, even stabs, at Astro Boy. Allow me to explain (dub names for the young): Robotboy/Astro, Kamikaze/Tenma, Constantine/Shadow, Gus/Abercrombie, Tommy/Alejo, Lola/Zoran+Kennedy, Moshimo/O'Shay, and it so on. Brief resemblances to "My Life As A Teenage Robot", "Star Wars", "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", "Kamen Riders", "Sailor Moon" and co. are afoot. Not to mention the abundant racial/gender stereotyping. Don't even get me started on the innuendos. I'll just say they're hidden and quite dirty. But seriously. Don't even try watching this. Especially if you like Astro Boy.

Childhood error
antoinemouthon29 November 2017
I used to like this show when I was a kid, but to this day I'm not even sure why because it aged so badly. The characters are cheaply animated and designed and hardly appealing, the landscapes are poorly designed, the 3D animation is confusing, and some characters are even stereotypical. And also, the jokes are so childishly crude and the show overall is mean-spirited. I mean, who is this bully who's hiding a giant ball in his hat? Is Tommy's younger brother actually a sociopath? There's much more I could say...

RoboFlop
a34trgv119 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Robotboy had the potential to be a well made cartoon that had action, comedy, and alot of heart. Frustratingly, the show ops to be a basic cartoon at best and a terrible cartoon at worst. Despite impressive visuals, the show has so many broken parts, it's surprising how it manages to stand on two feet.

The first major problem with the show is the terrible writing. At best the plots are predictable and at worst they are forced. Episodes like Dog-Ra and Halloween make Robotboy the bad guy just to ignite a plot that could've been told naturally. The show also uses tropes that are both tiring and groan worthy even at the time of it's release. Robotboy is kept a secret from Tommy's parents, Lola has a crush on Tommy, Tommy has a crush on some nobody named Bambi, Tommy's Dad is a bumbling idiot, and much much more. It's also worth noting that the jokes just aren't funny no matter how hard they try. These jokes mostly comprise of toilet humor, humiliation, idiocy and slapstick and none of them land so much as a smirk from me.

The characters offer nothing to really grab on too and just come across as wasted potential. Tommy, the main character, is a dull protagonist who's irresponsible, selfish and ignorant. He has been shown in episodes like The Boy Who Cried Kamikaze and Cleaning Day that he can't properly care for Robotboy because he either leaves him deactivated and vulnerable or takes advantage of him. Speaking of the title character, Tommy's incompetence makes the little robot so naive that he never grows to be a better character. In Robot Love, he acts like a spoiled brat. In Halloween, he can't tell the difference between a costume and a real monster. In War and Pieces, he isn't even a character: he's a Macguffin. I can't root for this robot to be a real boy if this show's definition of "real boy" is an incompetent and ignorant child. Lola might be the biggest waste of a potentially good character next to Chloe from We Bare Bears. She's the daughter of an African ambassador, she's a much better friend for Tommy (more on that later) and she's shown to be really smart. The problem? Out of the several episodes I watched and despite being in the intro, Lola is barely in the show and whenever she is in the show, she has this forced crush on Tommy. Why?! That doesn't make her character better, that makes her worst. The villains, Kamikaze and Constantine aren't nearly as threatening or entertaining. In fact, they act more like bumbling sidekicks to a REAL villain because they're so incompetent. Kamikaze is one of "those" geniuses, who takes all the credit and can't come up with an actual good plan to get Robotboy; or, you know, just make his own. Constantine meanwhile is one of "those" henchmen who's loyal to his boss but is clearly smarter than him and takes his boss' verbal abuse like a wimp. Other supporting characters such as Tommy's family, the teachers and students don't leave a lasting impression beyond one note tropes.

Then there's Augustus Bachmann Turner, or Gus, or as he obnoxiously calls himself The G-Man. You know how Eric Cartman relishes in the fact that he's a pain to everyone in South Park and is the most entertaining part of the show? Well imagine is he didn't. That's Gus! His only purpose is to make things worse and he never apologizes for it nor is he even care. He nearly got everyone killed in War and Pieces, he openly made fun of Tommy in Teasebots even after the later asked him to stop. He lied to get Tommy to the beach in Cleaning Day and as such Tommy's Mom donated Robotboy to an orphanage. Gus is one of the worst "friends" ever created. He makes Bloo look like Samwise Gamgee. Why are these 2 friends? Was there an early draft where these 2 were mortal enemies but decided at the last minute that Tommy needed a guy friend becuase a male character having a girl friend would be "weird?" Whatever the reason, they failed at making me care for this fat piece of lard!

The voice acting in this show is actually kinda bad. I get the actors are trying their best but the direction they're given just isn't good. Lorraine Pilkington as Tommy just sounds tired every time he talks and it really isn't doing him any favors. Rupert Degas sounds like he played Cartman on Madtv or Robot Chicken, further proving that this character is nothing more than a pathetic Cartman wannabe. Laurence Bouvard's performance as Robotboy gets grating after a bit because he supposed to speak in an accent but it's really distracting when it's combined with his robot voice. The late Eiji Kusushara sounds way too over-the-top as Kamikazi and should've dialed it back to make him a more reasonable threat.

Visual, the show has some impressive animation. The character animation moves fluidly, its got a nice color palette and the actions scenes really pop. The character designs are all pretty unique with round shapes and big expressive eyes. I do find the design of Tommy a bit derivative. Know any other cartoon kids with square shaped heads (*cough*Mac from Foster's*cough*). And yes I know, Tommy's Mom is attractive but she's still as dull as a wooden spoon so her physical attractiveness is rendered null and void.

Overall, Robotboy is yet another show that flew under the rader for good reason. Despite impressive visuals, the show has terrible writing, dull characters, mediocre voice acting, stale humor and the worst "friend" ever. Had this show gotten rid of Gus, better voice direction and stronger writers, then maybe the show could've been a real hidden gem. As it is, it's just a faulty lemon.

One of the best animated superhero series on Cartoon Network ever!
oscarsunden-4000628 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this when i was a kid and i actually really freakin' likes it and i even think it was one of the best animated superhero series on Cartoon Network, even Robotboy's coolest super activation.

I even hope if Jan Van Rijsselberge or somebody else would may make a reboot version of that coolest superhero series cause only sometimes, after the series ended in 2008, it was actually little sad feelings for few youngest lovers of Robotboy.

And i even hope it would be best clever idea ever if Robotboy would may be on Netflix & HBO MAX, it would even make youngest lovers of Robotboy happily.😏

A misguided project. I don't even feel there was potential to waste.
GiraffeDoor29 September 2019
I suppose this was meant to be an homage to those mecha cartoons but it has none of the pizzazz that made this things popular. The bland, nice-to-everybody human protagonist and it's, let's-learn-a-life-lesson tone would have been better for a show with an even younger demographic.

The obese best friend seems to be an attempt to add some balance but he just an obnoxious stereotype of the portly that makes me uncomfortable and doesn't care about other people's feelings. The blonde kids that owns robot boy has this infatuation with a popular girl named "Bambi" who is just so blatantly a bit of a C-word, but he is into her anyway. I know it was probably meant as a kind of character arc but I felt short changed in that department. She's pretty cute and you see a sort of adult version of her in her Mom who wears a two piece alongside her daughter in one episode if I recall. It startled me a bit at the time how revealing it was but that's not a sin.

Robot boy has little personality beyond just being kind of cute. He's like Pikachu but without the spark.

I will say this though: it was pretty badass when Robot Boy goes super Sayan in one of those so-long-the-villain-would-so-get-them-in-real-life morphs into a huge, imposing form of himself.

Not even the humour felt professional. It relies too much on bodily functions and times itself awkwardly, showing what it should have cut.

And of course the antagonists command no real fear at all. They are clownish and I feel sorry for them if anything.

I grew up watching this
mitsubishizero29 September 2020
I really liked this show as a kid. Growing up, I admittedly didn't watch it often but when I did I enjoyed it. I really did. A boy named Tommy takes care of a robot whom a doctor sent him to in hopes of keeping him out of the hands of a mad scientist. Helping him are his friends gus and some girl.

In addition to keeping the title character out of harms way, they also have to deal with everyday things such as school and stuff. The animation's very stylish. It has an Art Deco/Futuristic look that I like. The characters are ok. They basic but aside from his aren't really annoying.

The action's pretty cool. When Robotboy transforms, it's awesome! He enlarged twice his size to dish out necessary punishment to whatever foe(s) have wronged him or his friends. Robotboy was a pretty good show growing up. The story's were basic yet still enjoyable, the action was cool and the characters were decent.

I'd say check it out if you like robots and the future. Check it out and get ready for blast off.

Masterpiece..i really recommend This (For Teens)
robotboyalsop-14 July 2009
First of all this Cartoon is not a rip off as some "people" have claimed it is funny, inventive and heartwarming at some points you really feel for robotboy when opportunity's for him to become a real boy pass him by... i must admit some of the characters can be a little ....Steriotyped but that is just all part of the fun there is also adult humour placed into episodes which really makes the cartoon just for teens on-word. robotboy itself (the character) can't take damage due to his armour being unbreakable which i think is a very cool feature for a Battle robot, after watching the whole series i recommend that only teens watch this cartoon so that the jokes can be noticed, unlike kids whom it is meant for, Overall this series is fantastic .... robotboy is possibly one of the best characters i have seen in a long time i will love to see the next series when it is released i highly recommend this cartoon.. but just for teens + It is so good i thank the creator for ....creating it

Thanks for reading.

One of the greatest cartoons of all time! up there with Coconut Fred and Schnookums and Meat.
justsaynotorobots2 May 2016
yet another brilliant cartoon has appeared for Nickelodeon to terribly knock off! you'd think they'd stop, but after ripping off kids' favourite Coconut Fred with their silly "TowelEarl" show, and ripping off the beloved Schnookums and Meat with the ridiculously bad "Ron and Sammy", you think that'd be enough! but no, Nickelodeon had to rip off the OUTSTANDING Robotboy with "My Experiences as a Pubescent Machine"! Robotboy has very well fleshed out characters, with no racist Japanese stereotypes to be fount! there's Tommy, the square-headed cool kid, who of course, Cartoon Network ripped off with their horrible Mick character in "Duff House for Fictional Companions", Gus, the 100% worthwhile character with a unique personality who was ripped off by Comedy Central with their Busmale character in their terrible gross- out sitcom, "North Playground", and the lovable Robotboy, which Nickelodeon really did a bad job of ripping off, creating the unlikable Juney from "My Experiences as a Pubecent Machine". do not watch "TowelEarl", "Ron and Sammy", "My Experiences as a Pubescent Machine", "Duff House for Fictional Companions" or "North Playground" and watch Robotboy, a true masterpiece of the animation medium!

This awesome always reminds of Heartcatch Pretty Cure!
cureariel15 March 2015
I loved Robotboy since my childhood in Late 2005. It always reminds me of "Heartcatch Pretty Cure!" since both of these shows only take place on Earth. Also, Robotgirl and Robotboy, when they're activated, always remind me of Cure Blossom and Cure Marine respectively.

Also, When Robotboy and Robotgirl are deactivated, they also remind me of Erika Kurumi and Tsubomi Hanasaki respectively.

Finally, When Robotboy and Robotgirl are super activated, they always remind me of Super Cure Blossom and Super Cure Marine respectively.

Anyways this show is about:

Robotboy is the latest creation of the world renowned scientist Professor Moshimo.

Due to fears that Robotboy would be stolen by his arch-enemy Dr. Kamikazi and his main henchman Constantine to be used to take over the world, Professor Moshimo entrusts Robotboy to 10-year-old Tommy Turnbull, his biggest fan.

While being protected by Tommy and his two friends Lola and Gus, or "G- Man" as he calls himself, Robotboy learns how to behave and act as if he were a real boy while occasionally battling Dr. Kamikazi and Constantine who sought out to capture him.

It's too bad that Robotgirl didn't get more than 2 episodes, and this show also not having more than 4 seasons.
