Will Rogers Family Endorses Movie ‘Will To Win’; Details Revealed About Project
Image
Exclusive: Details have been revealed about a new film project that is the first to receive endorsement from the family of early Hollywood icon Will Rogers.

Kirkpatrick & Kinslow Productions has optioned the book rights to a new Jim Stovall novel, Will To Win, and is adapting it as the first movie ever to be approved by the Will Rogers family, including life rights.

Rogers, the celebrated vaudeville performer of the early 20th Century, was born as a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and became known as ‘Oklahoma’s Favorite Son’. By the mid-1930s he was the highest paid star in Hollywood but he died in a plane crash that same decade.

Filming of movie Will To Win is being lined up for spring of 2023. Set in current time, the project is a female-centric family sports drama with a Cherokee storyline, featuring an iconic Will Rogers character. Emmy-winning producers...

Remarkable Docu ‘Dear Mr. Brody’ Hopes For New Cinematic Life Past Cancellation Of Telluride Film Festival World Premiere
Image
Exclusive: The Telluride Film Festival was expected to start next week on September 3 and play, as usual, all through the Labor Day weekend. Sadly, the coronavirus pandemic curtailed those plans and the festival was forced to cancel this year’s edition. However, Telluride did put out the schedule of films that had been selected, and on September 11 will host a “drive-in” screening at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena of the new Fox Searchlight film, Nomadland starring Frances McDormand directed by Chloe Zhao. And they actively hope that some of the other films on their list find an audience, and in some cases even distribution in order to find that audience.

I caught one of those films, the fascinating new documentary Dear Mr. Brody, which was to have had its world premiere at Telluride and was planning to use that showcase to entice buyers. Cinetic is selling it and is just...

James Garner Died at His Home at 86
James Garner in The Rockford Files (1974)
James Garner passed away at his home in Los Angeles on July 19.

Actor James Garner known for his roles in The Rockford Files and Maverick has died at the age of 86.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded at about 7:57 pm last night to an unspecified medical request at his address. West Lapd has confirmed they responded and after their investigation, it appears he died of natural causes.

Garner received an Emmy nomination for best actor in Maverick in 1959, and he won an Emmy for his role as Private Investigator Jim Rockford in The Rockford Files in 1977.

Garner was not just known for his roles in television as he was able to transition from television to film. Shailene Woodley and Theo James in Divergent (2014)
Forecast: 'Divergent' Leaps Into Theaters -- Will It Be the Next Ya Hit?
Shailene Woodley and Theo James in Divergent (2014)
Thursday Update: Divergent earned an estimated $4.9 million from late Thursday shows. In comparison, the first Twilight opened to $7 million at midnight in November 2008. If Divergent follows an identical pattern, it will wind up close to $50 million for the three-day weekend.Forecast: Young-adult adaptation Divergent, which is being positioned as the successor to Twilight and The Hunger Games, should easily take first place at the box office this weekend. Meanwhile, Muppets Most Wanted also opens, though with a bit less fanfare than its predecessor.Opening at 3,936 theaters, Divergent is the latest in a long line of young-adult adaptations aimed at the young female audience that turned out in droves for the Hunger Games and Twilight franchises. Unfortunately, other recent attempts have been less-than-impressive: in the past 14 months alone, Beautiful Creatures, The Host, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and Vampire Academy all bombed. No question about it, Divergent is in a league above those movies.

"The Ultimate Life" is Ultimately Unnecessary
The market for values-affirming, family-friendly feature films has expanded by leaps and bounds in the last decade, but the quality of the productions made to meet that demand has yet to catch up with the surge in quantity. As a result, we get films like The Ultimate Life, the sequel to The Ultimate Gift, which is completely harmless but also painfully clichéd and devoid of any meaningful point. Instead, it’s the sloppy derivative morality tale of a cheap Hallmark or Lifetime movie gussied up with a bigger budget that still tells the same lazy story with the same tired lesson. Did a man really need to read a biography of his grandfather’s life to learn that he should prioritize things like love over money? Especially since he already seemed well aware of that concept but was simply hamstrung by circumstance? Which means all The Ultimate Life really accomplishes...

Faith films perform a marketing miracle
You don't need to show Jesus on the cross to make a hit religious film. In fact, you don't need that much religion at all. Catherine Shoard hears the good news from the makers of 'faith films'

Blog: What's your relationship with God at the flicks?

Generally, when a camera breaks on a film set, the first move is to call the technicians. Not so on Letters to God. When equipment went wrong on that film – a based-on-a-true-story weepie about a cancer-stricken child whose missives to the almighty redeem an alcoholic postman – the drill was: pray first, check the fuses later. But it wasn't just techies falling to their knees. It was religious professionals.

"We had prayer warriors on set every day," says director David Nixon, "people who knew nothing of film-making, but who knew how to pray. When I'd yell 'action' they'd go into action and start praying. They'd pray for the actors.

Gotta have faith: what's your relationship with God at the flicks? | Catherine Shoard
Faith films are burgeoning in the United States, but would you welcome them here in the UK? Or is religious scepticism the key to cinematic excellence?

Feature: Faith films perform a marketing miracle

There is, I think, something really curious happening at the moment, which I explored in a recent feature. A drop-off in conventional funding methods, together with a rise in the United States of devout Christianity and an increasing dislike of Hollywood's baser fixations, has paved the way for a new wave of super-profitable faith-based films. And though they've not washed up on these shores yet, the actions of UK distributors, in tapping church audiences for custom with mainstream releases they feel might strike a chord, suggests there's a hunger over here too.

But how far is this true? There are a few complicating factors. The first is funding. A reliance on the munificence of others leaves faith...

Pajiba After Dark 12/28/09
We're not going to discuss network television today, because it's nothing but a bunch of reruns and football, anyway. It's gonna be all cable, all the time up in this bitch. If you don't have cable, then I guess you'll just have to translate a Bible from Greek to Latin or something, like the rest of the monks in the Dark Ages. Nerd. Oh, unless you're a peasant, in which case have fun tanning hides or whatever and dying of plague.

8:00pm Est

PBS: "Antiques Roadshow." I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that some people clean out their attics, and they find some old shit. Then they take it to a barn or warehouse or whatever, and a couple of dudes look at it and tell them if they should throw it away or not. It will be exactly the same as the other 14,000 episodes of this show,...
