Rarely do movies make me speechless, and I have watched a lot of movies. Some of them have been the greatest things that my eyes have seen, while others have made me feel like I might require an eye-bleach. The last time a movie made me question my decisions was when I watched Sandeep Vanga’s Animal. “Never Again!” I thought to myself, but a week or so later, I’ve had to watch Gods of the Deep. Recently, a friend of mine told me to keep an open mind while indulging in this passion, especially with films I do not think highly of. So, I admitted my bias and proceeded to watch this horror flick. Understandably, the horror genre isn’t really known for its dexterity, but this one is just hilarious. I would prefer to think this was the intention, but I am not entirely sure it is.

Freeze gave us Lovecraftian horrors in the Arctic, now for a followup writer/director Charlie Steeds takes us to the Antarctic to face even more of them in the deep sea thriller Gods of the Deep.
Jim Peters is a professor of astrobiology at Miskatonic University’s London campus. He’s carrying on the work of his father, who vanished under mysterious circumstances while working for The Pickman Corporation. They help fund his research, but that doesn’t mean he trusts them. But when they want him to join an expedition to explore a strange structure discovered in an oceanic trench off Antarctica, he can’t refuse.
The film skips over the two months of training they need without so much as a Rocky-style montage, so the next thing you know...

Among James Wan’s post-Aquaman projects is an adaptation of Hp Lovecraft’s The Call Of Cthulhu – and it’ll also be a videogame, a report suggests.
James Wan has succeeded in adding a fishy accent to the festive season with Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom, out in cinemas now. But it seems Wan isn’t finished with the salty depths – among the director’s various upcoming projects is an adaptation of Hp Lovecraft’s cosmic horror story, The Call Of Cthulhu.
Deadline, which mentions this in a broader report about videogame adaptations, describes it as a ‘dream project’ for Wan, and one the filmmaker’s “been quietly working on for five years”.
Originally published in 1928, The Call Of Cthulhu is a short yet highly influential tale about a mysterious sect that worships an octopus-like deity from the depths of time and space. The story was the starting point for the wider Cthulhu Mythos,...

Ahead of Insidious: The Red Door releasing in theaters next month, James Wan and Patrick Wilson took part in an Ask-Me-Anything session over on Reddit last week. During the chat, Wan and Wilson answered various questions from fans about the Insidious franchise and beyond, but one answer from Wan in particular really caught our attention.
When asked if he has any dream project that he hopes to someday bring to life, James Wan brought up The Call of Cthulhu, an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s classic short story.
Of particular note, it sounds like Wan has already been low-key toying with a potential adaptation of Lovecraft’s tale, which was first published in Weird Tales in February 1928.
Wan teases during the Reddit Ama chat, “My dream project, that I have been secretly cooking away on the down low for the last 5 years, is The Call of Cthulhu.”

While it enjoyed its debut this past Friday in select theaters, Sacrifice from filmmakers Andy Collier and Toor Man is set to arrive on digital platforms today for genre fans to enjoy from the comfort of their own homes. Loosely based on a short story by Paul Kane, Sacrifice stars Barbara Crampton, Sophie Stevens, and Ludovic Hughes and is centered around a young couple who arrive in an isolated Norwegian village to claim an inheritance, but get more than they bargained for when they realize the villagers are part of a cult that worship a sea-dwelling entity.
During the recent press day for Sacrifice, Daily Dead had the pleasure of speaking with both Mian and Collier about their latest collaboration, and they discussed what they initially saw in Kane’s story that felt ripe for adaptation, their thoughts on collaborating with Stevens for Sacrifice, and more.

On the one hand, it’s understandable why adapting the works of H. P. Lovecraft to film are as difficult to do as they have consistently been in practice. The are stories written in the 1920s by a deeply unwell and outspokenly racist mind. Most of his best known works are inextricably rooted in his hateful ideologies, with the subtext (if not outright text) being about the dangers of interbreeding with something that a flagrant bigot would deem “inhuman.” Most of the rest rely on depicting things in camera that are literally “indescribable,” that simply looking at causes the viewer to

HBO’s long-awaited drama series “Lovecraft Country” finally hits the network this August, and a first trailer for the series has been unveiled by the network today. Based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, “Lovecraft Country” looks to offer plenty of southern gothic thrills and chills of the kind originated by the eponymous author of such stories as “The Call of Cthulhu” and “The Colour Out of Space.” The original dark fantasy novel explored the connection between the horror fiction of H.P. Lovecraft, and racism in the United States circa the Jim Crow era. Here’s the official synopsis from HBO:
“The series follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This...

The climax of Underwater features the appearance of a creature that looks all too familiar to readers of a certain author of horror fiction, and the movie’s director has now confirmed that it’s exactly what audiences thought it was.
Although Underwater was initially dismissed as “Alien in the sea,” it turned out to be an inventive and legitimately unsettling take on a disaster movie that proved the comparison to be a positive one. The intensity is kicked into high gear less than ten minutes into the story, and from there barely relents as the handful of survivors perilously navigate their way to safety.
Along the way they’re hounded by sub-aquatic monsters that are scary enough on their own, but at the climax it’s revealed that the heroes had merely been dealing with the spawn of an undersea leviathan. Its maw of flailing octopus-like tentacles and giant...

Following their exit from the “Star Wars” universe, “Game of Thrones” co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have found their replacement pic, signing on to produce an untitled thriller based on the graphic novel “Lovecraft” for Warner Bros.
It is unknown if they will also direct the project, but they’ve already set Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi to pen the script with “The Invitation” and “Destroyer” director Karyn Kusama exec producing.
The “Lovecraft” graphic novel chronicles the life of H.P. Lovecraft, whose books included “The Call of Cthulhu,” “The Rats in the Walls,” “At the Mountains of Madness,” “The Shadow over Innsmouth” and “The Shadow Out of Time” and spawned the idea of Lovecraftian horror. While plot details for the movie adaptation are currently unknown, sources say Benioff and Weiss’ take will tackle the idea of Lovecraft’s otherworldly creatures being real.

I’ve got a great video essay for you to watch today for all of you H.P. Lovecraft fans. It comes from Ted Ed and it’s called “Titan of Terror: The Dark Imagination of H.P. Lovecraft.”
The video dives into the legendary horror stories of Lovecraft, whose fantastical tales, such as The Call of Cthulhu and At the Mountains of Madness, created a new era of Gothic horror.
Arcane books of forbidden lore, disturbing secrets in the family bloodline, and terrors so unspeakable the very thought of them might drive you mad. These have become standard elements in modern horror stories. But they were largely popularized by a single author: H.P. Lovecraft, whose name has become synonymous with the terror he inspired. Silvia Moreno-García dissects the “Lovecraftian” legacy.
Watch the video below and let us know what your favorite Lovecraft horror story is.

A new Skyrim mod plunges The Elder Scrolls into the realm of Cthulhu and Lovecraftian horror.
If you want to get back into Skyrim but remain disappointed by the game only offering teases of old-fashioned Lovecraftian horror, there's a new mod out there that might just make your Cthulhu dreams a reality with The Elder Scrolls.
Here There Be Monsters - The Call of Cthulhu is a Skyrim mod that's been in development for a few years now. It adds an end-game quest to the RPG that is vaguely based on some Lovecraftian story elements hinted at in Skyrim's Dragonborn Dlc (specifically, the "Here There be Monsters" quest). The premise here is that there's a cult in Tamriel that seems to be tied to the appearance of some horrifying new monsters and a series of troubling rumors. Press Release: After months of sold-out performances in Ashland, Portland, and Seattle, Puppeteers for Fears, Oregon's only dedicated puppet musical horror troupe, will bring its original show, Cthulhu: the Musical!, to Los Angeles for performances June 21-23 at The Hobgoblin Playhouse for the Hollywood Fringe Festival.
Far from the lo-fi puppet show stereotype, the production features a full cast of five actors with elaborate custom-made puppets, a full rock band, and projected multimedia backgrounds.

H.P. Lovecraft’s influence can be felt in countless writers, musicians and artists who’ve followed in the “weird fiction” exemplar’s footsteps, but the author’s work has rarely been directly adapted. Bleeding Cool reports that this may soon change, as Legendary TV is said to be answering the call of Cthulhu and creating an anthology series based on 16 of Lovecraft’s best-known works.

The first two images from Call of Cthulhu, the official video game adaptation of Chaosium’s pen & paper RPG of the same name, have been unveiled this week. The images feature Darkwater Island,a disturbing place that players will have to explore during their investigation while Cthulhu, the Great Dreamer, prepares its awakening.
In Call of Cthulhu, players will control Edward Pierce, a former veteran and private investigator in 1920s Boston. Pierce will be investigating the tragic and mysterious death of Sarah Hawkins and her family in Darkwater Island. Today’s images give you a first glimpse of the locations players will have to visit: from the sinister docks, to the manor of the deceased family, Call of Cthulhu offers a dark and oppressive ambiance that shall pay tribute to Lovecraft’s work and universe. Indeed, this banal investigation might lead you to more sinister forces and darker secrets buried deep within Darkwater Island.

The fine folks at Narragansett Beer continued to hear “The Call of Cthulhu” last month with their release of the I Am Providence Imperial Red Ale, the fourth H.P. Lovecraft-inspired beer from the brewing company.
The I Am Providence Imperial Red Ale is based on Lovecraft’s enduring quote about the love he had for the Rhode Island capital. The Cthulhu-centric design for the red ale was fittingly created by Gunsho, a Providence artist with a unique style.
As with the previous releases in their Lovecraft Series, this beer is available on the East Coast in six-packs of 16-ounce tallboys for about $12.99 per pack.
Below, we have official details and photos of the beer, and to learn more, visit:

Some believe it’s based on a terrifying truth, while others harbor the hope that it’s purely fiction, but what many can agree on is that for years the Delta Green role-playing game universe has offered endless hours of eerie entertainment. With a new wave of Delta Green projects now underway, Daily Dead recently caught up with Arc Dream Publishing co-founder and lead Delta Green editor Shane Ivey, who discussed the new RPG and much more in our latest (and in this case, Lovecraftian) Q&A feature.
Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Shane. For those that are unfamiliar, can you talk a little bit about Delta Green and its Lovecraftian history?
Shane Ivey: Delta Green was a secret unit that conducted psychological operations for the Office of Strategic Services in World War II. It was disbanded with the rest of the Oss after the war.

Providence #3
Written by Alan Moore
Art by Jacen Burrows
Colors by Juan Rodriguez
Letters by Kurt Hathaway
Published by Avatar Press, Inc.
We rejoin Alan Moore’s and Jacen Burrows’ Providence to find American life, as our protagonist newspaper man/aspiring author Robert Black specifically notes, in a state of upheaval. Prohibition has just passed. Mobs of angry, out-of-work actors crowd the streets of Manhattan, evoking parallels in people’s minds to the all-too-recent revolutions in Russia. These nuggets of history are not thrown into the story haphazardly, and play out along with some important pieces of commentary from members of the cast. But it’s important to note who’s making these comments, and what demographics are included — or not included — when it comes to the pages illustrating the crowds during the 1919 Actors’ Equity Association strike. If you guessed these pages are dominated by the perspective of white people...

Indie company RadioactiveGiant has acquired the rights to develop, produce and distribute "Miskatonic," a feature film inspired by the works of acclaimed horror author H.P. Lovecraft.
Not a direct adaptation of one of his works like "The Call of Cthulhu" or "The Shadow Over Innsmouth," instead this will be an original work created in the Lovecraft tradition which melds science fiction and horror in a period setting.
Miskatonic refers to a fictional university located in the fictional Massachusetts town of Arkham. First appearing in Lovecraft's "Herbert West: Reanimator" story, references to the school and its various professors popped up in numerous works from his Cthulhu Mythos including "The Dunwich Horror," "The Shadow Out of Time," "The Dreams in the Witch House," "The Whisperer in Darkness" and "At the Mountains of Madness".
Albert Sandoval will direct from a script by Devlin Mann and Stephen Dare. Sandoval and Daemon Hillen will produce.

(Warning: this article contains spoilers for several H.P. Lovecraft stories and also contains material that may upset the balance of your sanity. "Tekeli-li! Tekeli-li!")
Dear readers, I am writing this under an appreciable mental strain since by tonight I may be no more. The end is near and soon will come the oblivion which is my only refuge from the unnamed and unnameable. Hallowmas has arrived and I hear the howling from that awful reef, the horrible croaking voices and the slippery bodies lumbering against the door.
The nauseous fishy odour seems to have mounted suddenly, the shrill whippoorwills have burst into a kind of pandaemoniac cachinnation which fills the countryside and I am certain that everything is coming to a head. Or, at least, a gibbering mockery of a head.

Artist Derek Ring has created a stunning piece of fan art that will give Cthulhu fans something to drool over. The piece is called "He is Risen." For those of you not familiar with the creature created by H.P. Lovecraft, the fictional deity was first introduced in a short story called "The Call of Cthulhu", which published in the pulp magazine Weird Tales in 1928. He's an evil entity that is worshiped by cultists who conduct human sacrifices in its name, which is what we are seeing in this epic illustration.

The instant I heard about 31 Days of Horror, I knew I wanted to write about Bigfoot movies. The idea came to me so quickly that it seemed to exist almost without genesis, as if I had somehow plucked the idea from some endless, ageless chthonic crypt populated with nothing but amorphous spirits built of mostly-forgotten esoteric genre-pictures wandering the non-Euclidean cyclopean masonry of the mythical grindhouse of history. The idea seemed so perfect- and so in my wheel house- that when it came time to actually write the thing I was struck with the confusion that had gripped so many of my friends that I had told about the idea. “Why do you want to do that?” was the second most popular question, right after, “Are there four Bigfoot movies worth talking about?” and while I knew the answer to the second (a resounding yes, hence why you’re reading...

For years, Guillermo Del Toro has been trying to get an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness made. Any true Lovecraftian, though, would be appalled by the Pacific Rim-sized creatures Del Toro would likely contribute to the novella, for readers know an actual viewing of the horrific beast lies outside of the pages. Lovecraft’s monsters typically defy the conceptions of the human brain, so they tend to fall into a formula: man ends up in bizarre circumstance, man sees something indescribable, man goes insane or commits suicide. It doesn’t quite sound like ideal fodder for a visual medium.
For the uninitiated, said monsters come from a mythology of deities called Old Ones, evil beings that once ruled the planet and are intent upon returning. The most well-known remains Cthulhu, a giant, winged octopus-squid who reigns in the lost city of R’lyeh. These...

The work of H.P. Lovecraft has inspired not only legions of fans throughout the years but an entire sub-genre of horror. Highlighted by frail, false realities masking a horrific and unfathomable truth… and of course, tentacles, fans embrace Lovecraftian horror films like the squishy appendages they feature.
And with the release of Dead Shadows, we remember our Top 11 Lovecraftian Horror Films.
This list contains not just movies inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, although some of them are certainly here; it also has movies that fall into the Lovecraftian-inspired category. Cosmic horror of the unknown and unknowable that could fracture sanity hovering over reality. Cthulhu. And, of course, those tentacles we mentioned earlier.
As for honorable mentions, how about the wildly popular hit HBO show "True Detective" for starters? There are certainly some Lovecraftian influences there, including Rust Cohle's ideas on fate and religion and the cult of Hastur operating in Louisiana.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Directed by Stanley Kubrick
USA/UK, 1964
Having finished Lolita, a subversive Hollywood piece even by noirish standards, Stanley Kubrick returned to war. Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb‘s scope was more encompassing than the private torture of Paths of Glory, looking forward to the threat of apocalyptic destruction instead of a reflective portrait of immediate world wars. In a surprisingly low-key tweet, Focus Interactive has revealed concept art for Frogwares’ upcoming The Call of Cthulhu, a Lovecraftian horror title for PC and next-gen consoles.
This is not Frogwares’ first attempt at wrapping its tentacles around Lovecraft’s brand of cosmic horror: Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened pitted Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s opiate-addicted super sleuth against a Cthulhu cult, and their first-person puzzler Magrunner blended futuristic sci-fi with the Elder Gods.
It’s been a while since we’ve had a full-fledged game release in the Call of Cthulhu universe, with the last being Bethesda’s criminally underrated Call of Cthulhu: Dark Carners of the Earth, as well as a handful of mobile games. The production art seems to hit all of the right Lovecraftian notes: crumbling New England mansions, occult violence, and overpopulated cemeteries that hold hideous promise.

This August, 73 years after his death, famed American horror-fantasy author Howard Phillips Lovecraft (At the Mountains of Madness, The Call of Cthulhu) will finally receive a public monument in celebration of his enormous literary legacy in his hometown of Providence, Rhode Island. If you even remembered that Kat Von D and Deadmau5 were engaged, you probably figured their wedding would be pretty wacky, right? Well, you were right, because their main inspiration is "The Call of Cthulhu," H.P. Lovecraft's short story about a guy with an octopus for a head. How's that for wacky?Kat was the one who threw out the "underwater-themed" detail, and she also said that the wedding will be "the furthest thing from traditional." Oh, but just wait till you see how she described her wedding dress:"It will have a sleek silhouette and include hints of iridescent teals, blues and deep violet ombré gradients."If Kat Von D really has an ombré wedding dress ... who even knows.
