The crowd at Los Angeles’ DGA Theater was treated to two Nolans for the price of one on Tuesday night, as Christopher Nolan joined brother Jonathan Nolan for a For Your Consideration event in support of the latter’s Fallout series.
Jonathan executive produced the Prime Video show — based on the popular video game exploring a postapocalyptic Los Angeles — as well as directed three of the episodes. The Oppenheimer filmmaker brought Jonathan to the stage by introducing him as “my baby brother,” as the two dove into a wide-ranging chat that touched on their previous collaboration on The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises (which they co-wrote and Christopher directed).
Jonathan noted at one point that in forming a video game into a series, “I watched the way that you adapted Batman from comic books to film and I think the underlying idea was treated with respect, not to...

The series has received rave reviews from newbies and devotees of the video game alike.
Lucy Mangan (The Guardian) observed: “For newcomers such as me, this intelligent, drily witty, immaculately constructed series set in the Fallout universe fully captivates and entertains on its own terms.”
Aramide Tinubu (Variety) stated: “Bizarre but intensely fun, ‘Fallout’ is like nothing you’ve ever seen; for that reason alone, you won’t be able to turn away.”

If you’re not caught up on your peak TV viewing, consider this your spoiler warning. Four months have passed since Jennifer Coolidge bagged her second consecutive Emmy for “The White Lotus” and thus became the eighth drama or comedy series regular honored by the TV academy for a season in which her character died. Emmy nominations of this kind have become quite common in recent years, and it’s possible that over 15% of the 2024 lead and supporting continuing series contenders will be added to the list.
The current consensus among more than 2,400 Gold Derby users is that five continuing series performers whose characters perished within the past year will receive Emmy nominations, while a few others have outside shots at recognition. This does not include characters like Anakin Skywalker who died before their shows’ latest seasons began but appear as ghosts or in flashbacks. Undead characters like most of...

When television science fiction works, it can change us. However, lasting long enough to make an impact is a hell of a trick. "Star Trek," the keystone franchise for multiple generations of fans and scientists, fought for its survival more than once. In the end, the original, larger than life phenomena lasted only three seasons. In a similar vein, "Babylon 5" remains a quieter but no less impactful series for modern science fiction fans, with the "Lord of the Rings" inspired space opera struggling every year since the poorly reviews first season for more time to finish its planned five year arc -- and a reboot from its original creator is still going through similar trials.
The problem is that good science fiction is always experimental, almost always more expensive than dramas or safe sitcoms, and it relies on an audience hanging in long enough for the plot to really hit its stride.

Following reports that James Gunn is eyeing the Emmy-nominated filmmaker Craig Gillespie for one of the highly anticipated films in the new DC Universe, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, recent updates have confirmed Gillespie’s official signing onto the project. Additionally, the studio has also announced a release date for the film, starring Milly Alcock in the titular role.

However, despite the filmmaker having a track record of significant female-led hits, some of the fans have raised concern over a male filmmaker leading the project, arguing that a female director would have potentially been more suitable to bring Kara Zor-el’s adventures to life on screen.

Direct-to-consumer revenue is up 70% year-over-year for Warner Bros. Discovery, and the ascendence of the ad tier of Max is a big reason why.
By now, even those who don’t follow big media companies closely likely know that Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is a man singularly focused on the bottom line. Zaslav’s two-year tenure as head of Wbd has been marked by numerous periods of frugality from the company, which is hardly surprising considering the 2022 merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery created a firm with more than $40 billion of debt. Content cuts became a part of life for the company’s streaming service that was known as HBO Max when Zaslav took over, and viewers lost access to everything from “Westworld” to episodes of “Sesame Street” as the company tried to slash its way to better financial standing. HBO Max first launched its ad-supported plan in 2021, but the...

The “Dune” universe is expanding to TV, and going way, way back in time to do it.
During Warner Bros.’ Upfront presentation on Wednesday, HBO and Max boss Casey Bloys introduced the first teaser for “Dune: Prophecy,” a prequel series spinoff of the hit sci-fi film franchise. The six-episode season will premiere on Max this fall.
“Dune: Prophecy” is inspired by the novel “Sisterhood of Dune” by Brian Herbert (son of original “Dune” series author Frank Herbert) and Kevin J. Anderson. Set 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides (Timotheé Chalamet), the series tells the story of the founding of the Bene Gesserit, the secretive, all-female (until Paul Atreides) order of superhuman power brokers who advise leaders and influence world events.
It follows sisters Valya (Oscar and Emmy nominee Emily Watson) and Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams) as they fight forces that threaten humanity’s future and create what becomes the Bene Gesserit.

It is always a great pleasure to see an original animation film, especially when it’s coming from outside of America. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against Disney and Pixar films, but the excitement is usually a notch higher for a non-English-language animation because the possibilities are endless. Mars Express, a recent French 2D animation film, is a testament to that. Cyberpunk science-fiction film doesn’t exactly have a groundbreaking plot per se. It does remind you of things like Blade Runner, West World, and most notably, Ghost in the Shell. Yet, the film stands on its own merit thanks to a wonderfully nuanced screenplay, superb execution, and terrific voice acting by its cast. In about ninety-minutes, it packs a lot of things, like a human-ai conflict, a murder mystery, and a conspiracy, into one heady cocktail of cinema. It is not exactly easy to follow thanks...

“Shōgun” may be returning for a second season as star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada has signed a deal with FX to return as Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the Japan-set historical epic, sources tell Variety.
The show was billed as a limited series, but, as Variety reported Thursday, FX is considering moving “Shōgun” into the drama categories in this year’s Emmy race.
FX declined to comment.
Sources indicate that, in the event of a Season 2 renewal, Cosmo Jarvis would likely also return to reprise his role of Pilot-Major John Blackthorne. Of course, there are plenty of other pieces that must fall into place before an official greenlight.
Should “Shōgun” be renewed, FX would majorly shake up the Emmys race, pitting the big-budget series against drama contenders “The Crown,” “The Morning Show” and “Fallout,” as opposed to vying limited series “Baby Reindeer,” “Fellow Travelers,” “Ripley” and “True Detective: Night Country.”

Sir Anthony Hopkins won the Oscar in 2020 and received his sixth Academy Award nomination for “The Father.” With his impressive body of work, it’s somewhat stunning to realize he was 54 years old before he became a household name.
Hopkins was born on New Year’s Eve in 1937 to working-class parents in Wales. He was inspired by fellow Welsh actor Richard Burton to study drama. Young Hopkins found success in theater, eventually becoming an understudy for Laurence Olivier, successfully taking over when Olivier became ill. Although his career was thriving in the theater, Hopkins decided to try his luck in television and films, and soon received his break in 1968 playing Richard the Lionheart in “The Lion in Winter.” Hopkins worked steadily on both the small and big screens, often receiving praise for his work. Exclusive: Back in the day, Michael Crichton novels would enter the movie auction marketplace and routinely sell for more money than commercial fiction by any other author. Usually within a day or two. That hasn’t happened in a good long time, but today it might. The book is Eruption, a big scale disaster novel tale that Crichton spent 20 years working on before his untimely death. The novel just went out to studios and other major buyers, and Deadline can share a letter from Crichton’s widow Sherri about the machinations, and why she sought out Patterson to complete the novel. It’s expected to be a big sale, continuing the legacy of the brilliant author behind everything from Jurassic Park, Westworld, Twister, ER and so many others.

Hollywood’s next bidding war is about to erupt. “Eruption,” the much-discussed upcoming volcano disaster novel from the late Michael Crichton and James Patterson, is about to be brought to auction, attracting a large group of suitors keen on landing the sought-after film rights.
The auction, being conducted by Shane Salerno at the Story Factory and CAA, will begin within the next two weeks, and could kick off as early as next week, Variety can exclusively reveal.
The project has drawn interest from most major studios, streamers and networks, as well as high-profile directors who have shared that they’d leap at the chance to helm a Crichton project. Projects created by the author or adapted from his work include the “Jurassic Park” franchise, “Twister” and “Westworld.” Crichton was also the creator of “ER,” which Variety is told brought in over $3.2 billion for Warner Bros.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we take another gander at the wide-open drama races.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to our favorite 2024 Emmys genre: drama! I kid, of course, but there is something still dramatic about this year’s drama categories – even as we (I) wait with bated breath to see which limited series blinks and joins the party in these final days, pre-printed FYC ads be damned. For now, we’re all operating on the idea that “The Crown” is the favorite here, but that feels like it’s operating on more vibes than reality. The final season of the Emmy Award-winning series was certainly better received than its preceding season… but it was a far cry from the sweeping fourth season.

Technological advances have brought big changes to the entertainment industry, revolutionizing how content gets produced, distributed, and consumed. Particularly influential is the merging of digital technology with gaming and traditional television. This integration represents a major evolution in both fields, with the distinctions between viewer and participant being blurred as people participate in richer, more immersive experiences. This article looks at the coming together of these two worlds, gaming and television — driven by the advances in virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (Ar), and interactive storytelling — and what it means for the future of entertainment.
The Convergence of Gaming and Television
The convergence of gaming and television is reshaping entertainment. It’s merging interactive gaming experiences with established TV show formats. Shows like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch let the viewer make decisions that determine the storyline. This adds a game-like interactivity to television. Incorporating VR and Ar technology into this mix is also on the cards.

Jonathan Nolan wrote The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises alongside his brother (after contributing to Batman Begins), filmmaker Christopher Nolan, and he's since shifted focus to small screen projects like Westworld and Fallout.
Christopher has said on multiple occasions that he's done with Batman, while Christian Bale has vowed to only return if the director does. As a result, we've come to accept this trilogy ended in 2012 and will be left alone.
However, in a new interview, Jonathan has made it clear he'd be open to returning to the Caped Crusader's world...even if his brother would take some convincing.
"Wouldn't that be a dream," he said. "That period was about 10 years of my life, from when I got the call to work on Batman Begins in 2003 to putting out The Dark Knight Rises In 2012 and it was epic."

Throughout his career in Wrestling and show business, Dwayne Johnson has engaged in numerous feuds, whether with co-stars like Vin Diesel or fellow wrestler John Cena. Yet, one that caught many off guard was his sassy retort to music producer DJ Khaled’s contentious remarks about his intimate life.

In a resurfaced interview, Khaled discussed the differing standards for men and women in intimacy, but Johnson didn’t appear impressed with his candid revelations, leading to an unforeseen and cutting response from the actor.
Dwayne Johnson’s Sharp Response to DJ Khaled’s Intimate Confession
In a previous interview with The Breakfast Club, DJ Khaled got quite candid about his s*x life. Referring to himself as “the king,” he opened up about how a woman should praise the man and the man should praise the woman. However, there are still certain things that he just didn’t do.

"Fallout" is the smash success Amazon Studios has been waiting for. The show, based on the popular video game series of the same name, has become one of the biggest hits to date on Prime Video. Amazon has revealed that the series is now the second-most-watched show in the history of the streaming service, trailing only the mega-budgeted "Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power."
According to Variety, "Fallout" was streamed by 65 million viewers during its first 16 days of release. Amazon made the choice to release the entire first season all at once on April 10. That's closer to the traditional Netflix binge model, rather than the week-to-week episode model that Prime Video has employed in recent years. That may have attracted more viewership in the early going, and that makes the show one of Prime Video's biggest hits ever out of the gate. As such, it's not surprising that...

As far as comic book adaptations go, most objective commentators and critics will agree that there is nothing better, overall than Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, which adapted the character of Batman and his world. Starring Christian Bale in the main role, the trilogy is lauded by critics and fans as well for having elevated the comic book movie to a completely new level, combining the fantasy of these worlds with the realism of our own world in the best way possible. Jonathan Nolan, Christopher’s brother, also contributed to the series as a screenwriter and in a recent interview, he confirmed that he would love to go back to that world at one point.
Jonathan Nolan is Christopher’s frequent collaborator and is credited as the co-writer of The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, alongside Christopher. Both brothers have since moved on from comic book adaptations,...

10. Altered Carbon (2018–2020) Fell Flat After S1
For all the cyberpunk connoisseurs, Altered Carbon was a breath of fresh air. A phenomenal setting, compelling characters, and engaging mystery — it had it all. The hype for Season 2 was real, but halfway through, the showrunner changed… Let’s just say that very few people even finished watching the new series.
9. Heroes (2006–2010) Was Gone for Good After S1
When Heroes Season 1 premiered in 2006, it became an instant nationwide cultural phenomenon. Everyone and their grandma were talking about it non-stop, and it felt like the new TV show was there to stay. Indeed, it stayed around for three more seasons, but those were so terrible the audience decided to ignore their existence.
8. Sleepy Hollow (2013–2017) Lost Its Essence After S1
Sleepy Hollow Season 1 got all the creepy fairy tale/legend fans excited. Unfortunately, after hyping the audience up, the show changed a showrunner and went into oblivion.

After the adaptation of Stephen King's detective story Mr. Mercedes, which was praised by both fans and critics, another adaptation of the book from the Bill Hodges series has been released.
