Although you want to see the poor, imprisoned bus driver get out, you have to wonder why he keeps antagonizing the guards and his fellow inmates. My sympathy for him ended there; I couldn't see myself arguing with the guards in a Moroccan prison. There are probably healthier ways to spend your time.
Check out Brokedown Palace or Midnight Express instead.
Most of the scenes in the movie (the ones where they got transferred to another jail) have been taken in a prison for about 10km from my home at Tongeren (BE)...as this prison is now a museum I was able to go there and feel what it's like in jail. I must say the claustrophobic and unpleasant feeling you get if you walk trough that place is really good shown in the movie.
Further I think for the low budget producers and directors of movies in Belgium got it's the best they could make out of it. No, the story isn't original and Axel is not the best actor in my point of view, but the movie touched me somewhere..especially the feeling brought out of what the family of a convict goes trough...
Conclusion: go see this one.
I hesitated before watching this movie. But after all I'm very pleased with the result. It's not the new 'midnight express' but ' De hel van Tanger' is based on a true story which shocked a greater part of Belgium.
They used the bigger actors in our country to make this movie worth while and they did a good job. (Nice to know; the movie was shoot in reverse. Because the character of Herman van Loock had to lose 35 kg.)
It might not win an Oscar, but I rate this movie a 7 because it's rather realistic and includes some good acting. If you like these types of movie or you are familiar with the 'real Herman van Loock' I would recommend it!

- TriviaThis film was shot from back to front, so it would be easier on lead actor Filip Peeters. He lost around 60 pounds by only drinking liquid foods for a few months, and could then gain weight throughout the shoot. He said it was very awkward to play a very worn out person (as his character Marcel van Loock was at the end of the movie), when you've just started shooting.

Rudy Vermeersch: Marcel, those pills... What are they for?
Marcel Van Loock: The beds are comfortable, aren't they?
Rudy Vermeersch: Are they for what l think they're for?
Marcel Van Loock: At least, they're better than the floor.
Rudy Vermeersch: Marcel.
Marcel Van Loock: l need them, Rudy.
Rudy Vermeersch: What do you need?
Marcel Van Loock: The certainty that if l can't take it anymore, l can put an end to it.
Rudy Vermeersch: Being hungry, cold, humiliated, a man can take all that. But the daily battle with your own thoughts, that's a different matter. lf things aren't right in your head, then you're finished, Marcel. Then you're really finished.
