Smurfs (2025): Release Date, Cast, Plot, and All You Need to Know
Image
The Smurfs are back, but whether that’s a good thing or not, we’re not quite sure. These blue creatures have been a pop culture staple for decades, and now they’re making a comeback in Smurfs, a reboot set for release in 2025. Unlike previous adaptations, however, this one will be a musical, with, perhaps, more surprises along the way.

PG movies are making a box office comeback, even outperforming PG-13 films last year. Paul Dergarabedian from Comscore says they’re becoming a real summer force. And while streaming is always there, filmmakers like Dean Fleischer Camp (Lilo & Stitch) believe nothing beats the magic of a movie theater, especially for kids.

With an all-star cast and an attempt to break down the Smurf mythology, this could either be a delightful trip down memory lane or yet another miss for the franchise. Let’s break it all down, and what we know about the project.

Creator of the Original ‘Bad Sisters,’ Malin-Sarah Gozin Talks Canneseries Hot Ticket ‘Dead End’: ‘What if We’re the Serial Killers of Our Planet?’
Image
Looking for an original crime series? In “Dead End,” a potential standout at this week’s Canneseries, sleuth Ed Bex is able to glimpse a dead person’s final moments by licking or even better eating a little part of their corpse. He spends much of Ep. 2 trying to steal a toe from murder victim 2 from out of the mortuary and store it at his family home for a moment when he can get a little nibble.

Highly palatable for crime drama connoisseurs from a director championed by Walter Presents, which bought her “Tabula Rasa” for the U.K., “Dead End,” produced by Lompvis and Caviar, has just been acquired by Federation for international distribution.

It could not be described as comfy crime. Playing in Canneseries main competition on April 27,“Dead End” is likely to build yet more the reputation of creator Malin-Sarah Gozin whose “Clan” (2012) was adapted into Apple...

‘Angry Birds 3’ Lines Up a Bonkers Voice Cast
Image
A third Angry Birdsmovie is coming to theaters. Paramount Pictures has announced that the franchise based on the popular mobile game will return to the big screen on January 29, 2027, more than seven years after the launch of the previous installment. The announcement comes right as the studio continues to expand their franchise catalog with sequels to The Smurfs, Paw Patrol and Avatar: The Last Airbender also in the works. Viewers will finally be able to find out what will happen to Red (Jason Sudeikis) next, with Angry Birds 3 allowing Paramount to work alongside Rovio Entertainment.

Both The Angry Birds Movie and The Angry Birds Movie 2 were released by Sony Pictures. The pandemic derailed any plans the company might have come up with in order to expand the franchise. But a few years after the sequel premiered on the big screen, Paramount will allow Red's story to continue. Some of...

What Happened To The Cast Of The George Lopez Show?
Image
Back in the 20th century, it was very common to see a stand-up comic enter the Hollywood pipeline by starring in their own sitcom based on their acts. Comedians like Bob Newhart, Martin Lawrence, and Roseanne Barr went from performing on small stages around the country to appearing in basically every living room in America thanks to the miracle of television. But when it came to the Latino community, there was a clear lack of representation. That is, until George Lopez arrived on the scene in 2002 with "The George Lopez Show."

Created by Lopez, "The Drew Carey Show" creator Bruce Helford, and "Roseanne" writer Robert Borden,"George Lopez" premiered on March 27, 2002, after the Los Angeles native had tried to make a TV show happen since the early 1990s. He finally achieved his goal when he met Sandra Bullock backstage after a performance at the Brea Improv Comedy Club in 2000. With the award-winning actress' help,...

Paramount Shows Off Action and Animation at CinemaCon as Skydance Merger Looms
Image
Paramount’s Thursday CinemaCon presentation comes as the studio has hit a crossroads. With its upcoming merger with Skydance going through a lengthy government review process, this is expected to be the last time that Paramount chief Brian Robbins will be on the Las Vegas stage.

“I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished at Paramount amidst all the noise going on at our parent company,” Robbins said in his speech, which reflected on the century-plus history of the Melrose studio that is about to move under David Ellison’s ownership.

Whenever he may exit, Robbins, along with a team that includes film president Mike Ireland and animation president Ramsey Naito, would leave behind a lengthy slate. Robbins listed some of those films in his opening remarks, which include Gina Prince-Bythewood’s adaptation of the book series”Children of Blood and Bone,” David Ayer’s “Heart of the Beast,...

'The Smurfs' Movie 2025 First Trailer Released
Image
The Smurfs are back again, and this time the little blue critters are returning in full live-action/animated hybrid style with an all-star voice cast that includes Rihanna, Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, and industry veterans Kurt Russell and John Goodman. The first trailer for the movie, which was originally set to be released on February 14 until it was pushed back to July 18, has now delivered a first look at this newest in a long line of new Smurf properties coming soon.

Smurfs will arrive in theaters and have to compete with some of the biggest blockbusters of the year, a weight that even Hefty Smurf could struggle to lift when the time comes. Jurassic World Rebirth, Superman, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps are all piled into a summer that is hoping to avoid a similarly packed release schedule in 2023, which saw many huge movies disappoint at the box office.

2025 Movie Release Dates: A Complete Calendar for the Year
Image
While the strike-impacted 2024 release slate resulted in fewer movies overall, 2025 promises to be something of a return to normal with a bevy of highly anticipated films coming to both theaters and streaming. From two new Marvel movies to James Gunn’s DC reboot of “Superman” to a “Jurassic” reboot to live-action remakes of animated classics galore, there’s plenty of familiar territory, but also noteworthy original films as well – Ryan Coogler’s vampire film “Sinners,” Steven Soderbergh’s ghost story “Presence” and a new Paul Thomas Anderson movie are all on tap, to name a few.

And that’s not to mention the films that don’t have release dates yet but are promised for 2025 – Netflix alone has the third “Knives Out” movie “Wake Up, Dead Man,” Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” and a new Noah Baumbach film.

Oh yeah, and there’s a new “Avatar” sequel coming in December.

Popeye's Revenge: Bloody First Trailer For ITN's "Raunchy And Gory" Horror Parody Released
Image
"He's one tough Gazookus, which hates all Palookas wot ain't on the up and square..."

We're used to seeing Popeye let his fists do the talking, but the iconic Sailor Man will be doling out more than a few spinach-fuelled ass-kickings in a new slasher movie from ITN Studios.

Following a recent first look via some promo stills, the first trailer for Popeye horror parody - which is officially titled Popeye's Revenge - has been released online (via Bloody Disgusting).

The success of the recent low-budget Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey has led to a number of classic animated tales being given a horror makeover, and the spinach-chomping comic strip hero is the latest beloved character to be turned into a bloodthirsty killer for an upcoming indie project.

This will be the first of two (so far) Popeye horror flicks to be released this year, the other being Popeye The Slayer Man.

Spider-Man (2002) Cast: Where Are They Now?
Image
Sam Raimi's Spider-Man ushered in a new era of superhero cinema, and many cast members of the Marvel Universe film have gone on to lead notable careers. With an MCU timeline that has gone on to combine all of the various universes in films like Spider-Man: No Way Home, there is reason to believe that additional actors and characters from this iteration of the web-slinger's universe may still play a part in Marvel's future. This makes it important to review the cast of Spider-Man, with an eye to where they are now.

The Spider-Verse has only grown larger in the decades since, with live-action and animated films alike cross-pollinating with one another. Audiences have continued to ask where future Tobey Maguire Spider-Man sequels are, and the more time that passes, the more likely it seems that such an event could actually occur. With Sony's villain-centric Spider-Man universe seeming to be ended,...

'Sonic 3' Writers Remember Being Pitied After Infamous 'Ugly Sonic' Trailer
Image
Writers Josh Miller and Pat Casey have been with the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise since the series' early days. "I think we started working on the first movie in, like, late 2017, so it's been almost 10 years on this franchise for us, which is wild," Casey told MovieWeb in a recent interview alongside Miller. A lot has changed since that first teaser trailer in April 2019, featuring what the internet calls "Ugly Sonic." After a delay to incorporate a new redesign, the Sonic film series went from an ugly meme to a beloved trilogy. Now, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is one of the biggest movies of the holiday season, earning the best reviews in the franchise's history, showing how far the series has come.

"The first movie was sort of a little movie that could. No one really seemed to take us seriously," explained Casey. "When the first design came out,...

The Massive Sci-Fi Flop That Nearly Starred A Young Glen Powell
Image
Glen Powell has mastered the art of embodying the charming leading man. 2023's "Anyone But You" — a rom-com loosely based on William Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" — was a surprise mega-hit that helped fast-track Powell and his co-star Sidney Sweeney's careers. Since then, Powell has co-written and starred in Richard Linklater's "Hit Man," where the actor showcased his magnetic star power in impressively entertaining vignettes. The more recent "Twisters," a sequel to the '90s blockbuster "Twister," also saw Powell playing the charismatic lead, in this case the meteorologist and storm chaser Tyler Owens (who's cheekily dubbed the Tornado Wrangler).

Even when Powell isn't donning the leading man suit, he is unforgettable, like in "Top Gun: Maverick," in which he played the skilled but cocky Hangman, a rival to Miles Teller's Rooster. A quick look at the actor's filmography makes it clear that his superstardom is hard-earned.

Sympathy for the Devil: How TV Redefined Villains for a Modern Audience
Image
Villains have always been a storytelling staple, the ultimate obstacles for heroes to overcome.

But today’s TV landscape has turned the idea of villains on its head, trading the black-and-white moral divide of old for something far more complex.

Gone are the days of purely evil antagonists.

Walter White (AMC/Screenshot)

Instead, we’re in an era of sympathetic sinners — characters whose actions, however heinous, stem from motivations we can understand without outright empathizing with.

So, what sparked this shift? Why are audiences now rooting for antiheroes — or, at the very least, trying to understand the paths that led them to darkness?

Let’s dive into how TV villains have evolved and why this transformation resonates with today’s viewers.

Villains of the Past: Simple Times, Simple Evil

In the early days of TV, villains were pure caricatures of evil. J.R. Ewing from Dallas and Alexis Carrington from Dynasty schemed their way into infamy,...

Alan Oppenheimer's 10 Best Movies & TV Shows
Image
Kicking off his career with various television roles in the early 1960s, Alan Oppenheimer would go on to have a prolific career over six decades, still working to this day, though his output as an actor has slowed down considerably over the years. Oppenheimer's career really took off in the '70s, and his notable credits include Westworld in 1973 and The Six Million Dollar Man, which premiered in the same year.

Although Oppenheimer has several credits in live-action shows and movies, it was his prolific voice-acting career that helped cement him as one of the best animated actors of all time. Oppenheimer has lent his talents to a variety of projects over the years, including voicing iconic characters in some of the most influential animated shows of all time. His work as Skeletor is a particular standout, but only the tip of the iceberg that is Alan Oppenheimer's monumental career.

Aaron Eckhart’s Underrated Disaster Film With 39% On Rotten Tomatoes Beat James Cameron’s Avatar To An Old Science Concept

Although The Core is largely forgotten now, this 2003 Aaron Eckhart vehicle beat James Cameron’s iconic 2009 blockbuster Avatar to one major sci-fi staple by six years. A lot of earlier movies inspired elements of the Avatar movies. South Park famously mocked the franchise as little more than a mashup of Dances With Wolves and The Smurfs, but everything from The Last of the Mohicans to Jurassic Park to Star Wars had a role to play in constructing director James Cameron’s immersive fictional world. Avatar: The Way of Water’s ending even borrows from Cameron’s own hit Titanic.

Survivor 49 cast: Jeff Probst hinted at celebrity player; did he name drop the person in a previous interview?
Jeff Probst at an event for The 36th Annual People's Choice Awards (2010)
The Survivor 49 cast is under construction and host Jeff Probst has revealed some interesting (very early) information about the casting process.

Jeff has previously stated that a well-known celebrity applied to be on the Survivor 49 cast. Jeff added that the celebrity was going through the same process as regular applicants.

“We have somebody applying for 49 who is very accomplished… known around the world,” Jeff teased during his On Fire podcast.

“They too are going through the same casting process, the same way every other player did, because this is everything,” Jeff added.

Survivor 49 and Survivor 50 will be filmed during the spring and summer of 2025. So, those episodes are a long way from debuting on CBS.

While Survivor 50 will get the most attention due to the milestone, having a celebrity on Survivor 49 could be lots of fun.

Kurt Russell & Steven Seagal Action Movie 'Executive Decision' is Streaming for Free on Tubi

Old action movies are never too far from the top of the charts on free streaming platforms, and Kurt Russells 1996 action-thriller Executive Decision has found new success on Tubi. The by-the-numbers suspense movie, which sees Russell as an intelligence analyst joining forces with Steven Seagals military colonel to take on a group of terrorists who hijack a plane carrying a deadly chemical weapon. The 90s box office hit was not a unanimous success with audiences and critics, but sometimes it really doesnt matter.

Executive Decision featured an incredible all-star cast, with Russell and Seagal being joined by Halle Berry, John Leguizamo, Oliver Platt, B.D. The story is certainly not unique, but the cast proved to me more than capable of making the old tropes work just enough to keep viewers entertained and on the edge of their seat. The...

The 20 Best '80s Saturday Morning Cartoons (That Everyone Forgot About)
Image
The 1980s were a halcyon time for Saturday morning cartoons. For a whole generation of children, nothing could beat a bowl of sugary cereal, a pair of warm pajamas, and a 24-inch TV blasting the best cartoons of the era. It was a time gone by, one that we will never see again.

But what were some of the best, long-forgotten cartoons of that time? Today's Gen Xers are parents, and even grandparents, so seeing these Saturday morning cartoons may bring back some wonderful memories. How many do you remember, and how many can you name?

Updated on November 12, 2024 by Robert Vaux: The term "Saturday morning cartoons" is a bit of a misnomer, especially in the 1980s when first-run syndication began to take hold. Many of the era's most beloved animated series actually never aired on Saturday morning, but instead played on weekday afternoons when their intended audience got home from school.
