Anthony Hopkins is taking on yet another iconic figure, this time from the world of music.
The stage and screen legend — a two-time Academy Award winner — is attached to star as George Frideric Handel in “The King of Covent Garden,” set during the period the famed opera composer worked on his choral masterpiece “Messiah.” Embankment Films has launched global pre-sales on the project, which is scheduled for a late fall 2025 release.
Andrew Levitas (“Minimata”) will direct “The King of Covent Garden” from a script by Tim Slover, with the filmmakers pitching the feature as “a powerfully majestic celebration of genius breaking all the rules to create an anthem inspiring the popular imagination of global audiences.” Dan Lupovitz (“Death Defying Acts,” “Simpatico”) and Kevan Van Thompson (“Ballerina,” “Jojo Rabbit”) will produce.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. And sometimes we’re lucky enough to talk to them directly!
Today is one of those glorious days. Conor and I are joined by Guy Pearce, the incomparable actor who’s got a new film coming out in theaters – Memory (April 29th!) – and plenty of accomplished past work to dig into as well.
We focus on The Count of Monte Cristo, The Hard Word, and Lockout (a.k.a. Space Jail). Plenty more is touched on in our 25 minutes of Guy Talk. Pearce explains his disappointment in Gillian Armstrong’s Death Defying Acts getting buried by Harvey Weinstein fifteen years ago, gets honest about certain movies he deems his “divorce films,” and highlights other B-Sides he’d...

Exclusive: Transformers duo Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are producing a movie about iconic escape artist and illusionist Harry Houdini for Paramount.
Plot details are being kept under wraps on the untitled development project but we understand it will be set of its time in the early 20th Century and have a Sherlock Holmes tone, dealing as it does with a human superhero type.
Script is being written by Neil Weidener and Gavin James who are also working with the studio on Jerry Bruckheimer’s Beyblade project we revealed last week.
Houdini (born Erik Weisz) was the Hungarian-American stunt performer and mysteriarch, noted for his escape acts and his rags-to-riches immigrant story. He first attracted notice in vaudeville in the US and then as “Harry ‘Handcuff’ Houdini” on a tour of Europe, where he challenged police forces to keep him locked up. Soon he extended his repertoire to include chains,...

Marcia Nasatir was never someone to be ignored, from her days as a young woman in New York publishing in the ’60s through her run as a top Hollywood production executive and her independent producing years. She set a path for many women to follow, and they did. She knew her worth and demanded equal treatment. She died Tuesday at age 95, after moving into the Motion Picture Home.
Even as a young woman, Nasatir was a forceful personality. Critic Joe Morgenstern first met her through their mutual friend Pauline Kael in the mid-1960s, he wrote in an email, “when Marcia was still a literary agent and before she became a studio executive at United Artists and rose to fill the position, with passion and distinction, that prompted her to use ‘firstmogulette’ as her email address. She knew books and loved them, but movies were her greater love, and as...

The first time most of us saw Saoirse Ronan was in Joe Wright's British period war drama"Atonement," as the little girl who gets her sexy older sister (Keira Knightley) into a heap of trouble. It's been seven years since Ronan earned her first and only Oscar nomination. Since then she played a trained assassin in Wright's "Hanna," and acted for directors Peter Jackson ("The Lovely Bones"), Gillian Armstrong ("Death Defying Acts"), Peter Weir ("The Way Back"), Kevin Macdonald ("How I Live Now") and Wes Anderson ("The Grand Budapest Hotel"). When she inevitably returns to the Academy Awards—she won Best Actress at the New York Film Critics Circle—she'll be a young woman. In a way the movie version of Colm Tóibín's book "Brooklyn," nurtured for years by writer Nick Hornby, has been waiting for Ronan to grow up. She's now 21. When we talked about her growth as an actress,...

Hunger Games director seems to have freed himself from sequel Catching Fire to negotiate project about famous escapologist
Gary Ross became the talk of Hollywood when he walked away from the hottest project in years: the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire . Now, it seems, we know what the director had up his sleeve: a biopic of the escape artist Harry Houdini.
Ross, whose Hunger Games has to date made more than $602m (£372m) at the global box office is in talks to direct an adaptation of The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero by William Kalush and Larry Sloman, which asserts that Houdini was recruited as an agent by British and Us intelligence services.
The Hungarian-born Houdini, who died in 1926, supposedly after being punched in the stomach by a student keen to test the escapologist's muscles, has been the subject of a number of biopics and character appearances,...

Even stars get starstruck! Downton Abbey actress Laura Carmichael reportedly got to try on Meryl Streep’s trousers from the 1985 film Out of Africa. In season 2 of the PBS series Lady Edith Crawley (Laura Carmichael) does a brief stint as a tractor driver which excited Carmichael because of the wardrobe change. Season 2, now out on DVD features a behind the scenes look at fashion and uniforms for the drama, a well as many other bonuses. In one of the featurettes Carmichael talks about trying on Streep’s trousers.

It's enough to make the redoubtable Dowager Countess of Grantham blanch. Members of her aristocratic family wearing clothes previously worn by other people who are not related to them? Who might be -- gasp -- commoners? Perish the thought.
Yet that's exactly what's been happening on hit period drama "Downton Abbey" (Sundays, PBS; check local listings). Costume designer Susannah Buxton -- who won one of "Downton"s six Emmys in 2011 -- and her team have recycled and adapted several evening dresses, outfits and accessories from other television series and movies.
The fact has not escaped the attention of sharp-eyed viewers, who have been keeping tabs via the website RecycledMovieCostumes.com. This is not a new practice of course -- elaborate Edwardian costumes are expensive and time-consuming to make and may have only been worn once or twice, so period pieces often rent them.
Plus, leading actresses are usually a standard...

New York -- Hugh Jackman liked his record-setting Broadway run so much this winter that he's handcuffing himself to a future musical about Harry Houdini.
Producers said Wednesday that Jackman, best known as the hairy Wolverine in "The X-Men" franchise, will star as the famed illusionist in "Houdini." It's scheduled to reach Broadway during the 2013-14 season.
Academy Award and six-time Emmy Award winner Aaron Sorkin of "West Wing" fame will write the story, and three-time Academy Award and four-time Grammy Award winner Stephen Schwartz of "Wicked" fame will write music and lyrics.
Jackman's career trajectory reveals a penchant for portraying showmen. He previously played a magician, rivaling Christian Bale, in 2006's "The Prestige." Jackman will also play ringmaster P.T. Barnum in the upcoming 2013 film, "The Greatest Showman on Earth." Aside from the more obvious parallels, Jackman has gravitated toward showmanship in other ways, including his song and dance numbers for the 2009 Oscars,...

Following up a hard year in her personal life, Catherine Zeta-Jones is back to doing what she does best: looking hot and being awesome.

It's hard to believe, but by the time 2012 rolls it will have been five years since we've seen Catherine Zeta-Jones on the big screen. You have to go back to 2007's middling double whammy of "No Reservations" and "Death Defying Acts" but since then--and not counting the 2009 comedy "The Rebound" which is stuck in some kind of terminal sales/distributor limbo--she's been laying low (taking care of her husband, cancer survivor Michael Douglas, and generally being there for her family). But 2011 has seen her quickly ramp up with a trio of projects. She's a got a role in…...

While the annual Deadly Awards highlight the achievements of the Indigenous film and television community, Georgina Pearson looks at how the industry is bridging the gap between our current successes and the professionals of the future.
As Australia rapidly proceeds with the national reconciliation plan, recognition and support of Indigenous talent has hugely increased. But while the film industry has been quick to join this endeavour – the divide between entry-level Indigenous practitioners and Indigenous professionals at the top of their field is still significant – and the importance of workplace equality has never been more relevant.
Screen Australia’s head of Indigenous program, Erica Glynn told Encore that in order for the industry to truly embrace its multicultural roots it is vitally important to accurately convey an Indigenous viewpoint. “This debate has been ongoing for years. Obviously, if this country wants to recognise the diversity of the people who live in it,...

Man on Wire's James Marsh among just three film-makers to repay lottery funding in full since 2006, according to recent report
Who is Britain's most commercially successful film-maker of the past five years – at least among those backed by lottery money from the UK Film Council? Take a bow, James Marsh. His Oscar-winning documentary Man on Wire repaid 100% of its UKFC investment, and his chimpanzee documentary Project Nim is set to follow suit.
According to figures published quietly in Hansard last week by culture minister Ed Vaizey, only two other films since 2006 – St Trinian's and The King's Speech – have so far returned their lottery cash in full. Streetdance 3D is also expected to do so.
And who must own up to being the least successful of Britain's lottery-subsidised film-makers? According to the figures, that unwanted honour goes to Stephen Frears. Two of his recent films have received some £1.7m...

Considering that, in real life, the profession seems to fall somewhere between "repellent" and "unbelievably douchey" (see: David Blaine, Criss Angel), it's somewhat surprising how many magic-based movies we have going around these days. The 2006 double bill of "The Prestige" and "The Illusionist" was the peak of the genre, but recent years have also brought the animated "Illusionist," Guy Pearce in the little-seen "Death Defying Acts" and, later in the summer, David Tennant as a vampire-fighting trickster in "Fright Night," while an adaptation of the seminal novel "Carter Beats The Devil" recently got a new lease on life. Even…...

Following up An Education and the upcoming romantic adaptation One Day, starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess (Focus, August 19), director Lone Scherfig is developing another book, Music and Silence, with BBC Films. Big Bad Wolf Productions' Dan Lupovitz (Hunky Dory, Death Defying Acts) started to develop the Whitbread Award-winning Rose Tremain novel--about upstairs/downstairs romantic intrigue in a Medieval Danish court--with Scherfig during post-production on An Education. They and British producing partner, Alexandra Stone (Young Adam, Kidulthood) brought the package to the BBC, and hired playwright/screenwriter Martin Sherman (Bent, Mrs. Henderson Presents) to adapt the book. One of the most popular of the prolific Tremain's novels, Music and Silence is set in the 17-century court of Danish King Christian IV at a time when the ...

How do you showcase a film starring two characters in one body? How will they both communicate with the audience? With each other? Will their thoughts sound different? Yes, there will be considerable difficulty in filming The Host, a big screen adaptation of author Stephenie Meyer’s well-loved (and hefty-sized) novel that Isn’T about any vampires. The important news however, is yes, the film is happening, and yes, it has a star!
How exciting is this, boys and girls? The deadline exclusive was music to my ears! Effervescent and capable actress Saoirse Ronan just won the starring role in the film. The life and escapist trickery of Harry Houdini is one of those subjects that filmmakers just love to keep going back over, most recently in the form of Guy Pearce in Death Defying Acts. And Sony has been trying to get a biopic of the man going for years now, with Francis Lawrence said to be in talks to give it a shot.Born Erik Weisz on March 24, 1874 (odd, given the date this story will go to press on the site), he took the stage name Harry Houdini after a combination of the first name friends gave him and famed French illusionist Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin. He became well known for his magic and escapology, but also for his cinematic aspirations and mile-wide sceptical streak that saw him expose several fraudulent psychics and self-proclaimed spiritualists.Variety reports that Lawrence is still only in the early stages and that he hasn’t...

Penélope Cruz. is having a rather extended bout of premieres for Broken Embraces and by the time that winds down she'll be starting it all over again to promote the musical Nine. Too much of a good thing: Nine and Broken Embraces premiere in the Us within five days of each other in November. It'll be all Penélope all the time and if the baby Bardem rumors are true, she'll be 7 months preggers when those hotly anticipated titles arrive.
Diane Kruger confuses me. I normally love these androgynous outfits on women but it doesn't work for her. Maybe because the body is too emaciated / boyish to offset the masculine attire with femininity? You'd think working on Inglourious Basterds...

That Harry Houdini. He was quite the character. Or at least, according to the biography of the fame magician by William Kalush and Larry Sloman, titled “The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero”. Summit Entertainment, the folks behind the “Twilight” movies, liked the theories posited in the book so much that they are planning to adapt it into a movie with an eye towards franchising the character, ala what Guy Ritchie is doing with his version of Sherlock Holmes. To that end, Summit has tapped scribe Jeff Nathanson (the “Rush Hour” movies) to write and direct the adaptation. According to THR, the bio, whch was published in 2006 by Atria Books, counts among some of its claims that Houdini was a spy for Britain, and at one point was asked to be an adviser to Czar Nicholas II’s court in pre-revolutionary Russia. And as with...

Summit Entertainment has unlocked "The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero," picking up feature-film rights to the biography by William Kalush and Larry Sloman.
The comprehensive tome, published in 2006 by Atria Books, became known for insinuating that Harry Houdini acted as a spy for Britain and was asked to be an adviser to Czar Nicholas II's court in prerevolutionary Russia. The book also portrayed the master escape artist and magician as a debunker of con artists who pretended to be spiritualists, leading to the controversial theory that Houdini’s death was caused by the spiritual movement as payback.
The studio is not looking to make a biopic but rather an action thriller featuring a character who is part Indiana Jones and part Sherlock Holmes. Summit hopes to cash in on worldwide recognition of Houdini’s name while potentially launching a franchise.

Here's another classic case of a great concept but potentially bad execution. Myriad Pictures has picked up the rights to Studio 407's comic series The Night Projectionist. The story takes place on Halloween Eve in a small-town movie theater, where an all-night Draculathon draws crowds of moviegoers who suddenly find themselves locked inside the theater, which is slowly filling with vampires. That sounds like an awesome B-horror movie that someone like Quentin Tarantino should be bringing us. But based on Myriad's past films, that doesn't sound like it's what we'll be seeing in the slightest. Who knows? Myriad's past credits include Death Defying Acts, which wasn't that good, Kinsey from 2004, and horror films like Jeepers Creepers 2. They've also got an adaptation of Studio 407's comic Hybrid in the works, too. I know I shouldn't be judging this before we even have a director or writer, but I guess ...

Myriad Pictures and comic book publisher Studio 407 are joining forces to bring the upcoming horror miniseries, The Night Projectionist, to the big screen. Projectionist takes place on Halloween Eve. It’s the last night of the condemned town theater, which is closing with an all night Draculathon. But the small group of moviegoers suddenly find themselves trapped inside when the theater is surrounded by a horde of vampires. A deadly siege begins, and the moviegoers soon make the terrifying discovery that the night projectionist is also a member of the coven. Is he friend or foe? The project marks the second title produced under Studio 407's first-look deal with Myriad -- the first being the comic book Hybrid, which is tentatively scheduled to begin production later this year. Myriad's previous credits include Van Wilder, Jeepers Creepers II, Kinsey and more recently Death Defying Acts, the Catherine Zeta-Jones and Guy Pearce film about magician Harry Houdini.
