Night Skies is the supposed true story of an alien encounter during the famous Phoenix Lights UFO phenomenon in 1996. Toss in a pretty much useless side-story with a bunch of young lovelies and you have the makings of a pretty weak movie.
How weak is up to you. Right from the get go, for me, the acting and writing, felt like a slap in the face. The back and forth between the young adults was eye-rollingly weak. Night Skies didn't deliver really anything note worthy besides in the special effects department. And that also still felt ScfI Originial-like. It honestly felt like the only real reason they made this movie was because of the gooey stuff you see ALL OVER THE PLACE at the end of the film. "Wow, this stuff is gross, doesn't it remind you of that stuff in Fire in the Sky?" Even though there's a crowd for everything, I still become surprised when people vote a movie like this a 10 and say nothing but good things about it. Maybe they're just overly optimistic people? Maybe I'm just a dude that sees the glass half empty. I think it's a combination of that and probably just not seeing that many flicks.
Night Skies isn't the worst movie in the world, but it's certainly nothing recommendable. I'd really only rec this flick out if there were other people out there who also want to see all the alien abduction movies there is. Lots of bad acting, really bad writing, weak directing, mixed with alright effects and loads of exploding windows, plus a moderately grim finale, you could do worse, but I'd recommend this as a party movie instead as a serious sit-down.
I think the movie is a cliché of all the first ET's movies but I have to admit that in some moments I was tense and the cameraman did an excellent job... It's a shame that the ending of the movie was so disappointing, but the real thing is we'll never know if the Phoenix lights they swear to have seen where actually aliens... Other alien movie to watch at midnight.
More than half of the movie is NOT about the promised story; it's about a dramatic (!) events where people don't behave dramatic enough and you lose all your concentration. Acting was not reflecting chain of events in the movie and you see people behave in such a strange way as if they forgot about what has happened just a few seconds ago.
It all boils down to this; this screenplay makes the story groundless; I don't know whether it was real, but my impression is simply "waste of time".
The film was about phoenix lights that were seen march 13th 1997. The film starts quite slow until the point were it starts to build up some excitement. The aliens were quite menacing looking and the special effects were all rather good. What was most interesting about this film is that this was apparently based on true events but obviously some parts were added for a certain amount of scares.
The film is not a must see but is quite unsettling and quite disturbing worth your time if you can be bothered.
about one of the 'other two' s comments about the lack of chemistry between the people? i don't know...they seemed like people I'VE known...not so cinematic(and, yes, it does have a 'B' feel so far. i don't, unfortunately, expect that to change)/interesting...somewhat shallow. but they're young. that makes their characters more realistic to me... not that they're interesting to people beyond this post adolescent age group... anyways, we're not watching it for THEM, so much...are we? we want to see what happens in one, supposedly real/based on whatEVER, encounter with creatures we ourselves will, likely, never encounter.
i hope it does SOMEthing that i do find interesting along the way, though... let's see...
OK. i'm back. i would've written 2 separate comments but this site doesn't allow for that... 'B feel' DOES continue. some real good acting by someone connery. wonder if he's any relationship to bond. the acting, on the whole, is what made the movie watchable...and i thought the alien interaction(although it DID, very much, remind me of an aforementioned(by another reviewer. or whatever we are...)film). thank god this site doesn't limit number of parentheses or i'd be frakked)WAS interesting... esp since it was a similar experience by two different groups of people in these movies. unless both stories were based on the same incident...i'm not sure of the history of this event or any of the specifics... anyways, i'm not recommending this film. maybe on a slow night... like you just found out that, for whatever reason, you were going to live forever and had time to watch EVERYthing kind of night... because the movies aforementioned(by other whatever we ares)are MUCH better...you'll even recognize some of the actors... ;-) not that i've never seen a movie that i thought was fanTAStic w/out anyone i recognized. anyone see 'the station agent'?
the music is what really undid it...forecast every mood i was going to experience...they must've run out of budget or something...i wish filmmakers would realize just how important music is. too much at the wrong moments can be distracting...let the actors you hire do their job and they SHOULD be able to elicit the emotions you're trying to pavlov outta me. that and a good script should do the job. i wonder if i should mention the 'fright' clichés...believe me. you'll recognize them if you see them...i'm surprised they didn't do the screeching cat jumping out of nowhere...i know where they could've put it. like i said...probably ran out of budget...those cats and their overinflated salaries...

Journalist: Senator, ah an attorney named Peter Gerston has filed suit in Arizona, uh, alleging that there's a cover-up regarding UFOs, and there has been for dozens of years, and millions of people have seen these objects in the sky, and the military continues to deny that anything's going on. Is that an area that's of interest to you at all?
John McCain: It's always of great interest to me. I think it's, I think it's uh of great interest. I would point out to you that there was once a case, a couple of years ago in Arizona, of some lights that were seen over Arizona, um, and that has never been fully explained.
