The Alzheimer's Association Welcomes Bill Gates to the Trenches to Dig Deep into Alzheimer's Disease
This week, Bill Gates announced his commitment to the Alzheimer’s cause. The Alzheimer's Association welcomes him and applauds his efforts to seek an end to Alzheimer’s, which he details in the piece titled Why I’m Digging Deep into Alzheimer’s."
As he notes, more people are living longer than ever before and discoveries in science mean that less people die young from heart disease, cancer and infectious disease, allowing for longer lives. However, along with increased age comes a greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s, a disease that is not normal aging and is ultimately fatal.
Gates acknowledges that in addition to the staggering economic costs, emotional costs also run very high for families affected by this devastating disease. Sharing personal insight into his own family experience is brave and advances the public conversation about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

One step closer to an engagement? Prince Harry took Meghan Markle to Buckingham Palace to meet Queen Elizabeth II last Thursday, according to the Daily Mail. The site reports that Prince Harry "desperately" wanted his grandmother to meet his girlfriend and that the hour-long tea meeting was "deliberately informal" in case Markle had any nervous butterflies and to make sure the meeting wasn't "widely publicized" in the palace. The report also details the couple arrived for tea at 5 p.m. in a Ford Galaxy with blacked out windows. Prince Philip is said to not have been at the tea. Of the reported meeting, Kensington Palace tells E! News that they "continue not to...

“Saturday Night Live” executive producer Lorne Michaels has leapfrogged to the top of the Emmy nomination hill.
Now that the TV Academy has completed its producer vetting process and added those names to the final nomination tallies, Michaels has officially landed five nods this year. That gives him a lifetime total of 78 nominations, more than any other individual in Emmy history. (The Academy recently updated its summary of “most” Emmys to give Michaels the lead.)
This year’s tally pushes Michaels ahead of HBO documentary dynamo Shiela Nevins, who has 75, and camera operator Hector Ramirez (74). Ramirez had long been the Emmy nomination champ, but Nevins had been creeping up on him thanks to her documentary output. Last year, Nevins and Ramirez tied (at 74 a piece), and this year she scored one more nomination, pushing her ahead.

Days after his funeral was held in Rancho Paolo Verdes, California, fans are continuing to pay tribute to Chester Bennington in creative and artistic ways.
One of the latest memorials to receive attention was a 20-foot mural painted on the back of a newly opened pizzeria in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles.
It took local muralist Jonas Never, 35, just two days to create the mural with spray cans and house paint, the artist told Variety.
“I used to take the pitching mound to the sound of ‘One Step Closer,’ ” said the former baseball player-turned-artist, who worked with artists Kryst and Kub to complete the piece.

Chester Bennington‘s gritty rock voice belied a man struggling with depression and a history with drug and alcohol abuse.
On Thursday, Bennington – frontman for the million-selling alt-rockers Linkin Park—was found dead by police just before 9 a.m. inside a private residence in Palos Verdes Estates, California, authorities told People. He was 41 years old and left behind six children.
Bennington had been candid about mental health battles in numerous interviews over the years. In 2015 he opened up about his dark periods to Rock Sound.

“One Step Closer” (2000) The first single off the band’s debut album “Hybrid Theory,” “One Step Closer” still stands as one of Linkin Park’s most recognizable songs nearly two decades later. “Crawling” (2001) In 2002, Linkin Park won their first Grammy Award for “Crawling,” one of the first singles to establish the band as an alternative radio mainstay. “In the End” (2001) An emotionally wrought “Hybrid Theory” standout, “In the End” is frequently hailed as the band’s best song. It’s also their most successful, peaking at No. 2. “Somewhere I Belong” (2003) After earning critical acclaim and commercial success with “Hybrid Theory,...

Hollywood and the public at large took to Twitter and social media on Thursday to react to the sudden passing of Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington, who apparently took his own life by hanging. Linkin Park was one of the most popular alt-metal bands of the 2000s, starting with their 2000 debut rap-rock album “Hybrid Theory” that included hits like “One Step Closer.” Bennington’s death was reported Thursday, the same day of Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell’s birthday, who committed suicide in May. The Linkin Park frontman was close friends with Cornell and even shared this note to Cornell on Twitter following.

Days after this year’s Emmy nominations were announced, it’s still stunning that the third season of “BoJack Horseman” was overlooked by TV Academy members for Best Animated Series.
Except for a well-earned voice acting nomination for Kristen Schaal, whose performance as the tragic Sarah Lynn was heartbreaking, the Netflix animated series went unrecognized. Given that “BoJack” was the best show of 2016, live-action or otherwise, this is just a bit frustrating.

Whether you’re watching “Wonder Woman” or “The Big Sick,” “A Ghost Story” or “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” you’re going to find plenty of quality at the movies this summer. There have been some letdowns, of course — but by and large, 2017 has turned out to be one of the best summer movie seasons in ages. We tend to dread this time of year as the moment when brainless blockbusters overtake more substantial cinematic achievements. So…what gives?

Apparently the TV Academy will only go so far in honoring sci-fi when it comes to the below-the-line craft nominations. While HBO’s “Westworld” and Netflix’s “Stranger Things” deservedly snagged 12 and 11 noms, respectively, FX’s “Legion” was totally shut out. That’s right: Noah Hawley’s mind-blowing Marvel superhero deconstruction didn’t get recognition for either Michael Wylie’s eye-popping production design or Dana Gonzales’s experimental cinematography. Perhaps it was too subversive for its own good.
“Westworld” Rules
With HBO’s “Game of Thrones” out of the running this season, the void was filled by the brilliant re-imagining of Michael Crichton’s adult theme park. Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy wisely took a more graphic and philosophical approach to A.I. The brutal sex and violence definitely tapped a cultural nerve.

After #OscarsSoWhite, when every single one of the 20 Oscar acting nominations were given to white thespians, the Emmy nominations continue to reveal far more diversity in the television industry.
Unlike the movie business, more television shows are aimed at more diverse audiences from the start, which gives some 20,000 Emmy voters a wealth of options. The television industry casts a wider net, aiming shows at every audience segment, especially women, who are consistently underserved by the Hollywood studios, despite their strong box office stats. And television series can take more chances on giving shows time to find their core audience.

They say television is the new film, and that’s certainly true when you look at how many actors, directors, writers, cinematographers and more from the film world are counted among this year’s Emmy nominees. A majority of the biggest contenders, from “The Handmaid’s Tale” to “The Night Of,” “Big Little Lies” and “The Crown,” brought some of the best film talent to the small screen over the last year, and their work resulted in major recognition from the TV Academy.

Hulu’s biggest awards play yet paid off this year, as “The Handmaid’s Tale” was nominated for 13 Emmy awards for its first extraordinary season — one which echoed disturbingly timely themes reflected in real world events. While the searing dystopian drama captivated critics with its detail-rich production design and jaw-dropping storytelling, it came into the awards race as an underdog, mostly due to Hulu’s lack of history with awards success.

Emmy nominations are out, and they largely went as expected for “The Leftovers”: No nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, nothing for leads Justin Theroux or Carrie Coon (though the latter omission was stunning), nothing for writers Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta (or any of the talented staff), no nod for the gorgeous work of director Mimi Leder, and very nearly nothing across the board.
Save for one glorious exception: Ann Dowd.

A “snub” implies a conscious dismissal; a knowing exclusion; a willful act of disdainful rebuffing. And in the era of “too much TV,” the idea of Emmy voters purposefully boxing out anyone other than Donald Trump is a bit nutty. Those who don’t make the cut aren’t “snubs” so much as they’re… leftovers.
But the 2017 nomination list sure was filled with surprises, good and bad. And while we’d like to refer to the surprising exclusions as leftovers, that’s just too darn confusing when so many of the excluded came from a show called “The Leftovers.” So we’re sticking with snubs. Just know that we know the TV Academy didn’t mean anything by it.

Last night, my wife and I forwent seeing a movie (Nightcrawler, specifically) to watch the antics of a daredevil who came to our home city, Chicago, to do something very, very dangerous. The man is Nik Wallenda, a professional tightrope walker, and he was planning on making not one, but two tightrope walks across the skyscrapers of the city. This is the man who you may have recently heard traversed the Grand Canyon on a tightrope, but here, his two walks were on smaller roles, with one at a big incline, and the other he was doing completely blindfolded, almost unheard of in the tightrope industry. Yes, there is a tightrope industry. Though the walks themselves were terrifying, they were short, and only about ten total minutes of a more than three hour broadcast on the Discovery Channel, one which had rather morbid undertones if you ask me. They spent…...

We made it, our fellow Human Beings. One step closer to the dream of #sixseasonsandamovie. After perhaps its most consistently strong season so far – following perhaps its most consistently terrible – NBC finally pulled the plug on weirdo outsider (yet hilarious) sitcom Community. It seemed that was it for the former study group, who had succeeded in their activities as the Committee To Save Greendale within the show, yet failed to maintain their beloved, rickety old community college in the schedules.
Community had, arguably, been running on borrowed time ever since it started. That’s certainly the opinion of co-creator and showrunner Dan Harmon. What had begun with the usual sitcom high concept of a disgraced lawyer (Jeff Winger, played with narcissistic brilliance by Joel McHale) forced to return to college so that can legitimately pass the bar, soon became something much more. The longer he stayed there, though, the...

Fox has pulled Hieroglyph, an Egyptian political drama seen as Fox’s spin on Game of Thrones. A thirteen episode season was ordered and a pilot episode filmed but Fox wasn’t happy with the scripts for later episodes. That puts it on the odd list of shows Fox cancelled before broadcasting an episode (it’s a surprisingly long list).
Community has been saved with barely any time to spare. Yahoo has picked up the cult comedy’s sixth season. It was a fortunate bit of timing for the two, as Yahoo was looking to find a way to draw attention to its original programming just as a show with a loyal fanbase was looking for a new home. Intriguingly, while its way too early to judge, Yahoo is open to letting Community run for more than six seasons.

How do we get Claire back into the story?
Zea: Joe sends out a video [message] that he's alive, and I decide that enough is enough. If he is not dead, we need to do something about this because I cannot live the rest of my life looking over my shoulder. So I say, several times, that I need to talk to Ryan Hardy.

Their "Death And Dust" premium statue is on the way next year from the high-end replica maker. Will this Horseman be visiting your home?
The statue, which will be available sometime after March, stands at an imposing 32" and features Death and his bird guide Despair on the prowl. The design is based on the work of now-former Vigil Creative Director Joe Madureira, and is fully painted with working Led lights for the eyes.
Hey, it's even got a nice chunk of backstory:
Like his fellow Horsemen, Death is of a race known as Nephilim – among the most powerful beings in the Universe. When Mankind was given the prize of Eden, Absalom – leader of the Nephilim – led his armies against Heaven and Hell in an attempt to steal it back. For this crime, the Charred Council condemned the Nephilim to destruction. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse were granted a reprieve...
