Although relatively scarce, horror movies directed by women are out there. You may have to turn over a few rocks to know who they are and their material might be a little more difficult to get your hands on, but these directors deserve just as much attention and scrutiny as their male counterparts, who have long dominated the genre. The following discusses selections of female directors’ forays into the business of terror. (This post contains spoilers)
Antonia Bird
The late director Antonia Bird’s Ravenous is a bizarre amalgamation of humor and horror that explores cannibalism with warped nuance. The strangely cacophonous score builds up tension as craven outcasts face a glutinous and depraved attacker whose strength seems fortified by his consumption of human flesh. Set during America’s westward expansion, the metaphor of humanity’s insatiable appetite for power is plain to see, but its execution indulges in such...

Today is Girl With The Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara’s birthday, so we figured now was as good a time as any to pit her against older sister Kate in a head-to-head battle to determine, once and for all, Who Is The Best Mara?!?!?
We’ve picked a few categories in which we can directly compare the work of the two Mara sisters, so without further ado, let the battle begin!
1. Law & Order: Svu appearance
In what has become an unspoken initiation into acting, every young actor must guest star on L&O. Like so many before them, Kate and Rooney made appearances on the show early in their careers. Kate played a gymnast with an eating disorder hiding the secret behind her friend’s murder. And Rooney starred in an episode called “Fat” as a girl who attacked fat people.
Kate barely edges out Rooney here. Rooney’s...

Maybe you were a member of the above crowd, maybe you weren't. In any case there's no denying that Rooney Mara has sky-rocketed in popularity after her breakout performance in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. As we eagerly await her next role, let's review some things you may not have known about Hollywood's new trendy actress.
5. She Comes From Football Royalty
Believe it. Ms. Mara is the daughter of New York Giants executive Timothy Christopher Mara. Her grandfather (mother's side) Art Rooney Sr. is the founder of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and her great grandfather (father's side) is Giants founder Tim Mara. Maybe she'll be at the Superbowl if the Giants win the division?
4. Her Name Isn't Really Rooney Mara
In case you didn't catch that from the last number, Rooney is the maiden name of her mother and actually her middle name. Her real name is Patricia Rooney Mara...

We'll be the first to admit that after seeing the abysmal remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, we didn't think there was any way that Rooney Mara could pull off playing the complex role of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo's Lisbeth Salander. Guess who else wasn't a big fan of the movie or the role of Nancy? Mara herself.
Mara recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly and dropped the following comments about her part in Samuel Bayer's travesty of a flick:
"You kind of learn to self-sabotage with things you don't want to get," she tells EW. "Sometimes you don't want to get something, but you do a really good job and you get in anyway. That's kind of [what happened] with A Nightmare on Elm Street-I didn't even really want it. And then I went in [to audition], and I was like, "Fuck. I definitely got that."

It's easy to be dismissive now that Rooney Mara is on top of the world. But when the star of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was cast as Nancy Holbrook in the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, I guarantee she was excited. It was a pretty huge step up from her role in Urban Legends: Bloody Mary. Now that Mara is a big star, she's comfortable downplaying a role other actresses would have killed for. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly she explains that she didn't want the role, and even tried to sabotage her chances. "You kind of learn to self-sabotage with thing you don't want to get," she tells the magazine. "Sometimes you don't want to get something but you do a really good job and you get in anyway. Syfy have released a brand new trailer for the eagerly-awaited (at least by me) Tiffany vs. Debbie Gibson match-up Mega Python vs.Gatoroid, which airs on Syfy in the Us tonight.
Directed by Mary Lambert (Pet Sematary 1 and 2, Urban Legends: Bloody Mary), the film sees Gibson play a fanatical animal-rights activist who frees illegally imported exotic snakes from pet stores, sending them into the Everglades, where they grow to mega sizes. Tiffany plays an overzealous park ranger who uses dangerous methods to save endangered alligators (namely pumping them full of steroids!).
After a species of giant python invades the everglades, park workers breed mutant gators to counter the threat. Soon, the battle between giant pythons and mutant gators threatens all of Florida.

We’ve been sent a whole heap of images from The Asylum’s forthcoming movies such as Mega Python vs Gatoroid, Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus, Almighty Thor and Battle of Los Angeles. So today is “The Asylum” day here on Blogomatic3000! The final set of images we’ve received come from the film I am most excited to see: Mega Python vs Gatoroid, which stars two 80’s pop icons (and, if you read the press at the time, former rivals) – Tiffany and Debbie Gibson.

The question who will be taking on the lead female role in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)" has finally been answered. On Monday, August 16, Sony announced through a press release that Rooney Mara has been tapped to portray Lisbeth Salander and to star opposite Daniel Craig in the English-language adaptation of Stieg Larsson's crime novel.
The actress who will be seen playing Erica Albright in "The Social Network" has successfully beaten out all of her contenders that included "Inception" actress Ellen Page, "Alice in Wonderland" star Mia Wasikowska and "Sucker Punch" beauty Emily Browning. She is expected to join the production when the filming begins next month in Sweden.
The English version of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" will be directed by David Fincher using a screenplay written by Steve Zaillian. Produced by Scott Rudin among others, it is set for worldwide release on December 21, 2011.

Rooney Mara (above, left) was announced as the titular role in "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" Monday (Aug. 16) -- but who is she? Here are five quick facts about the girl who beat out so many young female starlets for such a coveted role.
1. Mara's older sister Kate Mara (above, right) is none other than one of the cheerleader threesome members on "Nip/Tuck" and Annie Cantrell in "We Are Marshall." Rooney got her acting start in a bit part in her sister's 2005 video release "Urban Legends: Bloody Mary."
2. Her grandfather is Wellington Mara, one of the longest-tenured and most highly respected owners in NFL history. Mara was co-owner of the New York Giants from 1930 until his death in 2005. He was also president of the National Football Conference for 21 years.
3. Mara founded the non-profit organization Faces of Kibera, an organization founded to combat the rising number of orphans in Kibera,...

Rooney Mara just landed the role of Lisbeth Salander in the U.S. remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. We’ve known for weeks now that director David Fincher had hoped to cast an unknown for the lead role in the hottest literary adaptation in development right now (or possibly ever?), and that’s why we here at PopWatch HQ don’t feel too bad about not having any recollection of seeing Mara on screen beyond the trailer for The Social Network (where she plays Erica). Heck, not even a scan of her IMDb credits could jog our memories.

You didn't think you were really getting a pic of Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy yet, did you? According to Fuller, "that is mini freddy and mini jason attacking our exec at New Line on his birthday."
So no pic yet, but Fuller promises it's "coming soon." You know, Comic-Con is just around the corner...

Just a little tidbit out of the Elm Street reboot this morning, as producer Brad Fuller (Friday The 13th) has revealed that "freddy is wrapped."
The news trickled out via Fuller's Twitter page, where he's been dropping tiny details throughout the now two-month production. What that means is that Jackie Earle Haley has completed his portion of the filming, so all the would-be paparazzi hoping to spy a glimpse of the new Freddy Krueger can put the cameras away.

Over the past couple of weeks, we've been bombarded with "set photos" from the Platinum Dunes production of A Nightmare On Elm Street. Currently filming in and around Chicago, Illinois and across the border in Gary, Indiana (yes, the boyhood home of Michael Jackson), the production has been happening under the watchful eyes of curious onlookers, would-be paparazzi, and horror fiends alike.
While the "official" set visits have been occurring over the past few weeks and most of that coverage is currently "embargoed", the John Q. Public coverage keeps on coming.
On Monday, the crew of the Nightmare reboot returned to Gary yet again to film a dream sequence on Taylor Street. A few photos of the dilapidated housing were sent in last week (see them here) as maintenance crews prepped the block for filming. With filming complete in Gary (see the Post-Tribune's latest set report), a few more photos have surfaced,...

We spoke too soon on the lack of updates from the Chicago set of A Nightmare On Elm Street earlier today.
Bloody-Disgusting is reporting that actress Rooney Mara (Urban Legends: Bloody Mary) has already signed on for Two films as Nancy Thompson, the role made famous by Heather Langenkamp.
Since a sequel to the New Line remake is nearly certain, you can expect Freddy to haunt Nancy's Nightmares at least one more time. Click here for the full article.

Updated: Minutes after posting this story, another call for extras went out. Additional info below.
For those left wondering where all of the updates on A Nightmare On Elm Street are, set visits for press have been occuring over the past few weeks with more due tomorrow. Since the film is still almost 10 months away from it's release, there is still plenty of time for updates.
For those of you that want absolutely every little nugget though, here's three photos taken yesterday while prepping a new set in Indiana.
This set is pretty un-spoileriffic, but shows workers clearing branches for a new round of filming to take place this week. Photos by "dax46407"

Confirming the buzz that's surrounded the project for the past few months, Wes Craven's not very happy about the currently-filming remake/reboot of his 1984 classic, A Nightmare On Elm Street.
Unlike the recent remake of his 1972 film, The Last House On The Left (which had Craven's full blessing), 'Nightmare is a completely different story. IGN, who recently spoke with Craven, states that he feels genuinely "hurt" by what's happened.
Craven, who gave up all rights to Nightmare when he initially made the deal, says "I don't even know who's doing it and I'm not interested. It's actually really painful to think about it. It's the film of mine that I probably love the most, and which made the most money. The script went around Hollywood for three years and nobody touched it and I went through all my life savings and everything else to pay for it, so I...

Fangoria Readers in the Chicago area have yet another chance to appear in the New Line/Platinum Dunes remake of A Nightmare On Elm Street.
The production is currently seeking Real Police officers, firefighters, paramedics, baristas, bookstore clerks, and "press types". They're also seeking some less-specific types to work as non-speaking extras/background performers for scenes shooting around June 22 and July 1st.
We've got the full details below, and please remember that these are paid positions and that being selected as an extra is a "job". Please be professional, and don't act like an ass on set. We'd love to see some Fango Readers make it into the film, and speaking from experience - Joan and her crew are top-notch.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a trio of young actors have been added to the ensemble of the Nightmare On Elm Street remake being produced by Platinum Dunes for release by New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. They'll join previously announced Jackie Earle Haley, taking over for Robert Englund as dream slayer Freddy Krueger, and The Haunting In Connecticut's Kyle Gallner, in the role played in Wes Craven's original by Johnny Depp.
Two of the thesps already have heavy genre experience. Kellan Lutz (pictured above), who'll play a high school jock, was Emmett Cullen in Twilight and is currently reprising the role in New Moon; he also co-starred in another slasher redux, Prom Night, and is in this summer's DVD release Ghosts Of Goldfield. And Thomas Dekker stars on the Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles series, has been seen recently in the features From Within and Laid To Rest...

The remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street has seen quite a few casting announcements as of late, and tonight is no different. Well, the horror junkies at Bloody Disgusting received the scoop that Urban Legends: Bloody Mary actress Rooney Mara is in final negotiations to star as the "average," hometown teen Nancy. X2 and Superman Returns co-writer Dan Harris has signed on to pen the screenplay for Universal Pictures’ Dante’s Inferno, a live-action film based on the upcoming Electronic Arts videogame. The game, which is expected to launch late next year, involves a journey through the depths of hell. Fox is developing a new dramedy about a quartet of female friends in New York who happen to be werewolves. The project, titled Bitches, is described as a quirky urban fairy tale. The project has received a script plus penalty commitment from the network and comes from feature writer/director Michael Dougherty and Warner Bros. TV. TV writing duo Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts (Pushing Daisies) have come on board to supervise Dougherty. The two also will serve as executive producers alongside Dougherty if the project goes to series. Dougherty’s writing credits include X2, Urban Legends: Bloody Mary, Superman Returns and Trick 'r Treat, which he also directed. Trick 'r Treat is an anthology horror flick starring Anna Paquin and Dougherty’s feature directing debut. Although receiving great reviews on the festival circuit it has faced many delays and still hasn’t seen a wide release.
