- An independent film about a guy, Steven (who happens to be gay), who's ex-girlfriend from high school, Nancy, shows up with a surprise, their 10 year old son Luke! Nancy never told Steven that she got pregnant on prom night with his child (the only girl Steven ever slept with by the way). Nancy has reappeared in Steven's life dying of cancer. She informs Steven that her last wish is to have him "the natural father" adopt Luke. WOW what a blow for a guy who is in a relationship with another guy and neither one of them have a clue on how to raise a 10 year old kid! After many talks with his boyfriend Peter, Steven decides that he will make Nancy's dieing wish come true, but NOT without a little CRASH COURSE FIRST!—Derek Maki
- Nancy Roberts (Nina Kaczorowski) has spent the last ten years raising her son Luke (Dominic Janes). Suffering from cancer she needs to make a decision that will effect her son for the rest of his life. Plagued with the fact that her own mother is not suitable to raise her son, Nancy decides the only person who can raise Luke is his biological father Steven (Steve Hasley). The news comes as a great surprise, one that is welcome but not easily accepted. Since his last encounter with Nancy, Steve has come to the realization that he is in fact, gay. The shock of his own parenthood is a lot to take in, but now he must decide; does he and his current boyfriend Peter (Derek Maki) adopt Luke and give him a loving home or does he walk away... leaving Luke an orphan with no loving home? Luke needs his father to agree to take him or he will be, for lack of better terms, an orphan. The film follows the introduction of an unknown child being placed in his biological father's care, if he will take him. Luke mother, Nancy, wanted him to be with his father because every child deserves to be with family and the grandmother certainly was not a good fit. A character driven film that requires the viewer to have at least 5 tissues boxes at hand. The film was shot in Los Angeles, CA (including North Hollywood, West Hollywood, Burbank and Studio City). The film had its theatrical premiere in Hollywood CA. The theater was standing room only with the full cast and crew being present as well as general public being allowed in to see the film and participate in a panel/Q&A after the filmed showed. Director Derek Maki is from the east coast and the film had a second theatrical premiere on the east coast. Derek Maki and star Steve Hasley flew in for the east coast premiere and did a panel/Q&A for that crowd as well. The film's director wrote it as a drama knowing it would get the attention of film festivals, which it did! The film was nominated for "Best Picture' 5 times on the film festival circuit and won the honor twice. 2020 marks the 15th anniversary of the film and a new DVD release is planned with new bonus materials and a collectors book that features the film's shooting script (Director's copy with hand written notes left in).
