The Fight Club Ending: A Twist So Iconic It’s Still Stirring Debate Today
Image
The Fight Club Ending – China Twist ( Photo Credit – Facebook )

Very few filmmakers can stir up intense debate the way David Fincher does. His films provoke thoughts, then punch you in the gut and leave you squirming. Fincher, through the twisted minds behind serial murders in Se7en, to the unsettling real-life ambiguity of Zodiac, and the sharp dissection of online identity in The Social Network, has thrived in discomfort. His work is riddled with grim observations on modern life, always willing to get dirty in the name of narrative. Yet, nothing he’s done has lit fires quite like Fight Club.

Fight Club’s Brutal Tale Of Rebellion

Fight Club, released in 1999, not only attracted attention but also sparked ongoing arguments about violence and rebellion wrapped in consumerism. Based on Chuck Palahniuk’s cult novel, the film centers on a deeply disillusioned man who forms an underground fight club that spirals into chaos.

5 Actors Who Refuse to Work With David Fincher Again — Including Rdj & Jake Gyllenhaal
Image
David Fincher might be the guy behind your favorite mind-bending thrillers, but on set, he’s got a bit of a reputation — think genius director meets control freak — with a habit of running scenes so many times you lose count (and maybe your sanity). That level of intensity might result in cinematic gold, but not every actor is signing up for round two. In fact, some have quietly (or not-so-quietly) vowed never to step on one of his sets again.

You’d think that an auteur with a Best Director Oscar nomination under his belt would have actors lining up at his door, and in most cases, that’s true. But Fincher’s “my way or 75 takes later” style has pushed even A-listers to their breaking point. We’re talking about stars who’ve headlined billion-dollar franchises, award winners, and indie darlings alike, each walking away with unforgettable performances… and unforgettable tension.

David Fincher and the genre-bending return of ‘Love, Death + Robots’
Image
“For my money, it's like Love, Death + Robots should be anything. Anything that you can't figure out where else it goes,” legendary filmmaker David Fincher mused about the unconventional, sci-fi/cyberpunk-flavored Netflix (mostly) animated anthology series. It’s as apt a description as any for the ambitious, experimental, and genre-bending project, now launching its fourth season.

“Creativity happens on the fringe,” said Fincher — the director behind boundary-pushing cinematic classics like Seven, Fight Club, The Social Network, Gone Girl, and Zodiac. Speaking on stage at the Love, Death + Robots season premiere at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, he was joined by fellow executive producer Tim Miller (Deadpool) and supervising producer Jennifer Yuh Nelson (Kung Fu Panda 2 & 3). “It always does, and it always takes somebody — it has to be these weird flyers out there — to inform where the industry is going to go. So we're just going to be out there.

Image
When you think of modern cinema, two names that come to mind almost immediately are Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan. These two directors shook up the film industry with their distinct styles. Tarantino is known for his sharp dialogue, gritty characters, and scenes that make you squirm in the best way possible.

Christopher Nolan

15 Best Movies Like Parasite
Image
One of the most widely acclaimed movies of the past decade was 2019's "Parasite," which became the first non-English language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Directed and co-written by South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho, the movie featured a financially struggling family getting more than they bargain for when they infiltrate a rich family's home. Blending dark humor with thriller action and themes of increasingly divided social classes, "Parasite" opened Korean cinema to larger audiences. And for those left on the edge of their seats hoping for more, there are plenty of intense movies, both from Korea and beyond, to keep the thrills coming.

Long before "Parasite," Korea has steadily delivered some of the best thrillers in global entertainment, both for cinema and television. But to be clear, this list isn't exclusively comprised of South Korean thrillers, but they do figure prominently here. Instead, these are dark thrillers,...

15 Actors Who Hated Working With Their Directors
Image
Like any workplace, tensions can get pretty high on Hollywood sets. Actors and crew members are often working long hours day after day to create something that is the singular vision of one person: the director. When that vision isn't clear enough for everyone to see, or that director is maybe not a healthy collaborator, things can come to a head very quickly. That's why there's a stereotype of directors being very controlling, argumentative, and narcissistic, given that, in the case of most studio films, there's a lot of responsibility on their shoulders to make a good film.

We've all heard stories about famous actors who refuse to work with each other, despite the on-screen chemistry their characters displayed. However, fewer people know the dirty details about actors who hated working with certain directors, whether it be a matter of personalities clashing, actors not being invested in the project, or...

'Magic Farm' Stars Rank Chloë Sevigny Movies
Image
Chloë Sevigny has been a truly significant figure in American cinema throughout the past few decades. She burst through the gates, making her mark on numerous masterpieces, all within five years of each other — The Last Days of Disco, Boys Don't Cry, Julien Donkey-Boy, American Psycho, Demonlover, Party Monster, and Dogville. Maybe you enjoyed her chemistry opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in Zodiac (2007), or perhaps you liked seeing her deal with crazy boss Patrick Bateman in American Psycho (2000). Whatever the role, Sevignybrings a signature commitment to every role in the vast array of commercial and indie projects she's graced, including her latest Mubi feature that's now playing in select theaters.

Magic Farm sees her as the leader of a bumbling film crew that tries and virtually fails to make TV gold in a small Argentine town. Sevigny's co-stars include Alex Wolff (Oppenheimer), Joe Apollonio (Hacks) and Amalia Ulman (El Planeta) — who also wrote and directed Magic Farm.

Guy Ritchie's 'Fountain of Youth' Trailer Sends John Krasinski and Natalie Portman on a Mythic Quest for Immortality
Image
Guy Ritchie is trading gangsters for globetrotting as his latest film, Fountain of Youth, has dropped a new trailer — and it’s giving full-on Indiana Jones meets National Treasure energy with a glossy Apple Original Films finish. The action-adventure flick, led by John Krasinski and Natalie Portman, is set to premiere globally on Apple TV+ on May 23, 2025. In the film, Krasinski and Portman play estranged siblings reluctantly reuniting for a very casual global heist, as one does, to find the Fountain of Youth.

What begins as a treasure hunt quickly becomes a race through time and legend, as the pair tap into their historical know-how to follow cryptic clues, evade rival hunters, and quite literally dodge bullets in pursuit of the world’s most enduring mystery: immortality. Because who doesn’t want eternal life in the middle of a global crisis, right?

In addition to Krasinski and Portman, Fountain of Youth...

Who Killed Amy Winehouse? Asif Kapadia on the Case of the Dead Singer, and the ‘Really Heavy’ Version of ‘Amy’ His Wife Preferred
Image
British filmmaker Asif Kapadia approached Oscar-winning documentary “Amy,” which was released 10 years ago, as if he were a detective investigating a crime, he told an audience of documentary professionals this week at Visions du Réel, a film festival in Nyon, Switzerland. So, who killed Amy Winehouse?

As he was making the film, Kapadia was conscious that it was “really dark.” “A friend said to me, ‘If you tell the truth, this film’s never going to come out.’ I thought: ‘What’s the truth? I don’t know what the story is.’ And then once I learned the story, I thought, ‘My God, this thing will never come out. It’s really heavy.’ There’s a version of this film that is 15 minutes longer, which is like really heavy, and my wife is still annoyed that we didn’t release that one, but it’s just a bit too much.

Moon Knight Star Among Latest Additions to Blumhouse's The Mummy Movie
Image
The cast of Lee Cronin's The Mummy continues to expand. Moon Knight star May Calamawy is one of three new actors to board the hotly-anticipated Blumhouse horror movie.

According to Deadline, Veronica Falcón and May Elghety have also been cast in The Mummy. The actors join previously announced cast members Jack Reynor and Laia Costa, who are believed to be playing a married couple who run afoul of supernaturally sinister forces. Production is currently underway in Ireland and Spain on The Mummy, which is being produced by Atomic Monster and Blumhouse for New Line Cinema.

First announced in December 2024, the new Mummy movie hails from Cronin, who is set to direct the monster movie from his own screenplay. "Sorkin-Style Writing": Rami Malek Shares New Details About His WWII Drama 'Nuremberg' With Russell Crowe [Exclusive]
Image
Rami Malekwill be seen in theaters this Friday in a new kind of action movie in The Amateur, but he’s also been tapped to star in an intriguing movie that’s still lacking an official release date. Malek will feature opposite Russell Crowe and Michael Shannon in Nuremberg, the historical thriller based on the book The Nazi and the Psychiatristby Jack El-Hai. The book and film tell the story of a psychiatrist whose job is to see if Nazis are fit to stand trial for their crimes in World War II. The first images of Nuremberg were released back in May 2024, but release updates on the film have been eerily quiet since. Collider’s Steve Weintraub recently caught up with Malek to talk about his new movie, The Amateur, and during their conversation, Malek praised Nuremberg scribe and director James Vanderbilt while also likening him to another famous writer:

"He's an incredible writer.

Zodiac Killer Project Review: Deconstructing the Genre of True-Crime Documentaries
Image
Charlie Shackleton’s Zodiac Killer Project offers a refreshing twist on the typical true-crime documentary format. What might initially seem like just another exploration of one of America’s most infamous unsolved murder cases is, in fact, an intellectual and self-aware meditation on the genre itself.

Shackleton, known for his previous works that dissect genre conventions—such as Fear Itself and Beyond Clueless—takes a step back from the Zodiac case to examine the very tropes and mechanics that make these kinds of documentaries so compulsively watchable.

At the heart of Zodiac Killer Project is Shackleton’s failed attempt to adapt Lyndon E. Lafferty’s book, The Zodiac Killer Cover-Up: The Silenced Badge, into a true-crime documentary. However, when Lafferty’s estate revoked the rights to the book, Shackleton transformed his frustration into an exploration of the creative process itself, while cleverly sidestepping the legal issues that blocked him.

This documentary,...

This Terrifying Serial Killer Movie is Now Streaming on Netflix
Image
Serial killer flicks aren’t often my favorite unless they’re doing something unconventional, or at least marginally subversive, with what’s pretty familiar material by this point. Summer of ’84 is terrifying, so it gets a pass, and Zodiac ranks among one of the best procedurals ever made. Never bet against David Fincher (and that includes last year’s The Killer). Often, however, serial killer movies, especially horror movies, follow the same trajectory, and they don’t often surprise me.

But every so often, something comes along that totally blows me away. Megalomaniac shocked me, and Trap was a ton of fun with its campy tongue planted firmly in cheek. And then there’s 2018’s The Clovehitch Killer, a remarkable and terrifying directorial debut now streaming on Netflix.

Learn more below:

Per Netflix: A teenager’s picture-perfect family is torn apart when he uncovers unnerving evidence of a serial killer close to home.

The time The Criterion Collection released Kindergarten Cop… sort of
Image
It’s not a tumor! More than a decade ago, The Criterion Collection included 1990’s Kindergarten Cop. Of course, since it was clearly an April Fool’s Day prank, Ivan Reitman’s movie would never make it to the beloved boutique label. But that doesn’t mean Criterion didn’t put all their efforts into their faux release.

For starters, it had absolutely killer cover art featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger in drawing form, complete with a childish coloring job. Flip over to the back of the box and you’d find a truly ingenious write-up that positioned Kindergarten Cop as far more complex than original audiences thought:

“Historically, the policier and the family comedy were two distinct categories. Then, in 1990, Kindergarten Cop gave us all a lesson in genre revisionism. With muscular sensitivity, Hollywood’s last action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger embodies detective John Kimble, who is compelled to go undercover as...

Netflix Made David Fincher An Offer He Couldn't Refuse To Get House Of Cards
Image
David Fincher was the most sought-after commercial and music video director in the world in 1992 when he followed the example of his predecessors Alan Parker, Ridley Scott, and Tony Scott by segueing into the unpredictable world of film production. Pulling a Ridley, so to speak, with "Alien 3" might've felt like a propitious move, but it turned into a nightmare production that resulted in the compromising of Fincher's dark vision and the damaging of a valuable studio franchise. The fledgling filmmaker took close to 100 percent of the blame, at which point it looked like he'd get kicked back down to videos and commercials for the foreseeable future.

As we know, he soared brilliantly out of the ashes three years later with "Se7en," and cemented his geek god cinema bona fides in 1999 with "Fight Club." Suddenly, Fincher was the Generation X Stanley Kubrick, a visionary of the now who didn't...

I Can Give You 1 Reason Why the ‘Fruits Basket’ Prequel Is Better Than the Main Anime
Image
Fruits Basket is one of the most popular shojo anime series ever. Rightfully so, as the series deals with some of the darkest themes in the guise of following the lives of a bunch of high schoolers and their families. The touch of fantasy in a web of very real human problems only takes things up a notch.

As such, fans expected that Fruits Basket: Prelude would follow along similar lines without, of course, the fantasy aspect of it. While it did just that, the reception among the loyal fanbase was less than stellar. Of course, for very good reasons.

However, there is one aspect where Fruits Basket: Prelude surpasses the main anime. For me, that very aspect makes the movie an enjoyable watch.

Jack Black says the Anaconda reboot is a horror film with some clownin’
Tom Gormican
Four and a half years ago, Sony’s Columbia Pictures announced that they were developing a reboot / reimagining of the 1997 “nature run amok” thriller Anaconda (watch it Here), with the intention of “taking what was a simple and relatively cheap programmer with a B-movie concept and event-izing it in scope and budget.” Back in 2023, we heard that Tom Gormican would be writing and directing the film as his follow-up to the well-received action comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. In recent months, Gormican’s Anaconda reboot, which takes a meta approach, has been making its way through production with a cast that includes Jack Black (School of Rock), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Thandiwe Newton (Westworld), Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad), Steve Zahn (Joy Ride), Selton Mello (Bury Your Dead), and Ione Skye (Zodiac). Rudd has described the film as a “totally unique” meta comedy – but in a new interview, Black said that,...

Where to stream the best DC superhero movies right now
Image
Max has the biggest lineup of DC superhero movies—here’s everything you need to know.

When “The Batman” dropped back in 2022, I was pleasantly surprised. It was dark, stylish, and everything you’d want in a fresh take on Gotham’s protector. Robert Pattinson proved he has the chops to handle the pressure of playing one of the most famous superheroes of all time, bringing a brooding intensity that made the film feel like a detective noir wrapped in a blockbuster. But “The Batman” is just the continuation of Warner Bros. (and now Max) long history with the DC universe of superheroes, from the entire Justice League saga to Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy to animated classics. If you’re looking for the best streamer to binge the biggest DC superhero movies, it’s definitely Max.

Bong Joon Ho’s Early Film School Materials, Comic Books and Rare Storyboards: Props From the Academy’s ‘Director’s Inspiration’ Exhibit

In the years since Bong Joon Ho made Oscar history with “Parasite”s best picture victory in 2020, the Korean director’s fanbase continued to grow and evolve around the world. And with the recent release of his capitalistic satire “Mickey 17” starring Robert Pattinson, the time feels right to celebrate his genre-defying work over the years.

Opening this Sunday in Los Angeles, the Academy Museum’s “Director’s Inspiration: Bong Joon Ho Exhibit” marks the first exhibit fully dedicated to the beloved director’s filmography. The collection features over 100 original objects from Bong, including the suseok rock from “Parasite,” the original slate used during filming “The Host” and an advertisement for the film club Bong formed while enrolled at Yonsei University, where he screened classics like “Paris, Texas,” “Tokyo Story” and “Raging Bull.”

15 Box Office Bombs That Became Cult Classics
Image
Some of the greatest movies in cinema history began as a box office disappointment. There are several factors that go into whether films become blockbuster hits or box office bombs. Film history has proved that some of these factors have worked against great films, resulting in a poor box office performance.

These factors could vary, such as poor marketing efforts, as seen in the case of The Iron Giant, a badly made theatrical cut like the Blade Runner theatrical cut, or unfavorable circumstances like in the case of Donnie Darko.

Fight Club was one of the box office bombs that went on to become a cult classic | Credits: 20th Century Fox

However, these films were lucky because the audiences gave them a second chance, and they are now considered cult classics. From Alfred Hitchcock’s classic to IMDb’s top-rated film, here are the films that were initially ruled out...

Quick LinksWhat is Zodiac About? What if Zodiac Followed Gary Francis Poste?

There are plenty of contenders for the greatest film of the 2000s decade. The first decade of the new century was absolutely stacked to the brim with instant classics in every conceivable genre, and fans have been relentless in their debate over the best of the best. Comedy fans come to the table with all-time greats like Superbad, Juno, and The Royal Tenenbaums. Action fans pull The Dark Knight, Kill Bill, and Children of Men out of their holsters. Finally, drama fans mention Academy Award-winning heavy hitters from 2007, like No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood. An often forgotten contender for best of the decade, however, comes in the form of a fellow 2007 release that was completely shut out at the 80th Academy Awards ceremony.

Anaconda (1997)
Paul Rudd describes the Anaconda reboot as a totally unique meta comedy
Anaconda (1997)
Now, Rudd has given an interview where he describes the film as a “totally unique” meta comedy.

Karyn Kusama's Follow Up to 'Jennifer's Body' Is a Masterpiece
Image
Karyn Kusama has charted a unique course throughout her 20-plus-year career in the movie business. Her 2000 debut Girlfight was an indie hit, giving her the chance to tackle big-budget sci-fi spectacle in 2005's Æon Flux. That movie flopped with critics and at the box office, and her next project, 2009's Jennifer's Body, didn't do a whole lot better. Luckily, time has been kinder to Jennifer's Body, which has gone on to be considered an underrated feminist horror classic in the intervening years.

Six years after Jennifer's Body's initially poor reception, Kusama returned to the big screen with a very different project: 2015's The Invitation. A small-scale, claustrophobic thriller, the film premiered at SXSW on March 13th, 2015, and went on to earn strong reviews for its masterful use of slow-burn tension. 10 years after its premiere, its esteem has only grown, and it regularly shows up on lists of the best...

Bong Joon Ho on the Political Inspirations of ‘Mickey 17,’ Mark Ruffalo, and the Frailty of Foolish Leaders
Image
While watching “Mickey 17,” it’s impossible not to make connections to current events. Mark Ruffalo’s Kenneth Marshall character, a flamboyant and flailing politician leading the sci-fi film’s space expedition toward colonizing an ice planet, has distinctly Trumpian qualities in the way his thin skin manifests itself.

Audiences will also naturally draw a direct connection to the billionaire space exploration of Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk, with the film’s central conceit that corporations are prepared to look to life beyond Earth as its environment deteriorates. While a guest on an upcoming episode of IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, writer/director Bong Joon Ho admitted via translator that current events did seep their way into “Mickey 17,” just not in the way some are thinking.

“I think probably the pandemic was flowing into this adaptation process,” said Bong, who adapted the screenplay from Edward Ashton’s sci-fi novel...

Jake Gyllenhaal and David Ayer's 'End of Watch' Has Become a Hit on Max
Image
End of Watch was a gritty and realistic cop thriller that became a critical and box office hit when it was released in 2012. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Brian Taylor and Michael Peña as Mike Zavala, the film features the two LAPD partners as they work in South Central Los Angeles. Written and directed by David Ayer, the movie really shows the bond between the two young officers. It's now getting a second life on Max where it sits at number five in the top 10 and even climbed as high as the number two spot.

The movie follows Taylor and Peña as they perform their duties and things take a turn when a cartel targets them. Ayer grew up in South Central L.A. and has written several films about corrupt officers working at the LAPD. But for End of Watch, he wanted to showcase two honest and dedicated officers. Ahead of its 2012 release,...

'The Silent Planet' Review | A Cerebral Sci-Fi Thriller
Image
Imagine getting convicted of a crime and sentenced to... life on another planet. And they don't call this new film's planet-in-question "silent" for nothing. Picture a prison sentence of solitary confinement taken to its logical extreme on a planet far, far away. Not that this story has any sort of ties to the ever-evolving Star Wars universe, though sci-fi die-hards might eat up the similarly delicious backdrops captured on location in Canada by writer-director Jeffrey St. Jules (Bang Bang Baby). As he recently told MovieWeb, the substance behind The Silent Planet extends far beyond the picturesque science-fiction nature and crime-mystery edge of the intricate plot he concocted.

The end result is a dreamy, reflective, and thought-provoking feature about coming to terms with our past, coping with never-ending guilt and such other relatable themes. The cerebral feel of the film draws you right in, with the added bonus of two solid performances portraying the dueling protagonists.

Film Review: Panda Plan (2024) by Zhang Luan
Image
Jackie Chan has done it again. After “A Legend,” he has released another bad film, and it is not entirely clear why he made it in the first place. With “Panda Plan,” he is doing even more damage to his extensive and glorious work. Its audience success was also quite modest. With production costs of $25 million, “Panda Plan” grossed just $36 million. That’s really not great, especially bearing in mind that the film was released on China’s national holiday on October 1, 2024, and considering that it was obviously intended as a family film.

As soon as you say “family film,” you wonder how the first scenes of “Panda Plan” fit into this concept. The movie starts with a wild shootout in a church, clearly inspired by John Woo‘s action classics. But wait! It’s a film set, and Jackie only...

Image
This post contains discussion of mass violence and mental health.

At this point in time, it sort of seems like serial killer thrillers are a dime a dozen — but despite that, one starring Shailene Woodley just got added to Netflix and quickly became one of the most-streamed projects on the platform (according to FlixPatrol).

"To Catch a Killer," a crime flick directed by Damián Szifron (who co-wrote the movie alongside Jonathan Wakeham), stars Woodley as Eleanor Falco, a beat cop who's stuck working the New Year's Eve shift in Baltimore when a gunman starts killing partygoers indiscriminately with a sniper rifle. When Eleanor and her team locate the apartment where the gunman appears to be located, they find it empty — and the investigation begins in earnest. Teaming up with FBI Special Agent Geoffrey Lanmark (Ben Mendelsohn), Eleanor is on the case and tries to track down this mass shooter before...

Maika Monroe in Longlegs (2024)
6 Movies to Watch if You Liked ‘Longlegs’
Maika Monroe in Longlegs (2024)
Neon-disturbed latest indie-horror flick, “Longlegs,” recently became one of the biggest surprise hits this summer. An occult thriller that opened with mostly wide critical acclaim, the movie has slowly gone on to win audiences, as the global box office collection now stands at a stellar $47.3 million. What’s even more impressive is that it became the highest-grossing regional debut ever for the distributor house, marking 2024 as one of the best years for horror genre fans.

But that’s not to say that the Nicolas Cage starrer serves strictly as a genre film. In fact, the discourse regarding “Longlegs” has been pretty varied. While part of the audience has hailed it for evoking an unspoken existential terror manifested through its carnivalesque frights, others have admired the film as a mood-setting procedural thriller. Some are even calling it a long-awaited giant step in serial killer cinema. That’s probably why it’s...
