Plenty of A-listers have gotten their start in the world of horror, from Kevin Bacon in Friday the 13th to Jennifer Aniston in Leprechaun. But did you know that Bradley Cooper also starred in a horror film early in his acting career? He plays the lead role in Ryûhei Kitamura’s 2008 film Midnight Meat Train, an adaptation of Clive Barker’s 1984 short story of the same name.
In the film,
A struggling photographer meets the owner of an eminent art gallery in pursuit of a successful career. His obsession with uncovering humanity’s dark side as his debut project draws him to a serial killer who preys on late-night subway commuters.
Cooper plays that struggling photographer who quite literally goes into the belly of the beast searching for a new subject to impress his rich benefactor. I promise you have no idea where this film is going, and it is one wild ride.

Back in 2002, I witnessed director Neil Marshall’s werewolf movie Dog Soldiers in a packed theatrical screening at a 24-hour horror marathon where the audience around me laughed and cheered at all the right moments. It was a great viewing experience – and because Dog Soldiers was so cool that it could provide an experience like that, I have been rooting for Marshall ever since. His career has had its ups and downs, but I’m always glad to hear he’s working on something new – so I was pleased to see the Variety report that Outlander actor Graham McTavish has signed on to star in Marshall’s latest action horror survival thriller, Gunn.
Although Marshall usually writes his own films, he’ll be directing this one from a screenplay written by Doug Rao that won the Gold Prize at the Page International Screenwriting Awards a while back. The survival horror...

Neil Marshall, who is best known as the director of Dog Soldiers, Hellboy, and episodes of the HBO fantasy drama series Game of Thrones, has lined up his next project and its lead star. According to Variety, the British filmmaker is taking the reins on a new high-concept survival thriller titled Gunn, which is expected to mix action and horror against the backdrop of a secluded offshore platform. House of the Dragon and Outlander actor Graham McTavish is set to star in the upcoming movie, though his role remains undisclosed for now.
Not much is known about Gunn at this time, other than it having a screenplay written by Doug Rao, who recently stepped out to make his feature film directorial debut with the 2024 psychological thriller Dirty Boy, also starring McTavish in one of the movie's lead roles. The script for Gunn is already lauded as it won the Gold...

Dog Soldiers and The Descent director Neil Marshall is moving onto Gunn, with Graham McTavish signing up for the new survival horror.
Director Neil Marshall is heading to an oil rig it seems for his next movie, as he puts together a new survival horror by the name of Gunn.
Penned by Doug Rao (and his screenplay is an award-winner already), the movie will take place on a North Sea oil rig that’s been overtaken by a religious sect. It sounds a bit The Wicker Man in the middle of the ocean when described like that. Graham McTavish has signed on the dotted line to lead the movie.
Neil Marshall has form in this genre too, of course. Films such as Dog Soldiers and The Descent sit on his curriculum vitae, and he’s also behind movies such as Doomsday and Centurion. More recently, he directed the 2019 take on Hellboy,...

Stars: Catrin Jones, Bethany Williams-Potter, Emma Stacey, Ellen Jane-Thomas, Ioan Hefin, Steffan Cennydd, Nathan Sussex, Kevin McCurdy, Rhodri Miles | Written and Directed by Aled Owen
The Mill Killers is the feature debut from writer/director Aled Owen that explores the fear of being watched – both literally and metaphorically – through the lens of guilt, paranoia, and unresolved trauma, all wrapped up in a tense and atmospheric psychological horror film that lingers long after the credits roll.
The story follows Rhiannon (Catrin Jones), who is haunted by a tragic accident from her past. Along with her childhood friends Sam, Erin, and Mia, she returns to the now-abandoned steel mill (hence the new title for the film) where the incident took place. What starts as an attempt to find closure – and a hidden stash of money – quickly spirals into something far more sinister. With his film Dread now screening on Nyk UK, director Anthnoy Diblasi reflects on how a personal car crash influenced the film, axe murder challenges and his close relationship with Clive Barker.
Dread is based on a Clive Barker short story—what drew you to this particular tale, and how did you approach adapting it for the screen?
I was drawn to it because it was Clive’s only non-supernatural story that he’d written up till that point… maybe even his only one now. And I was very close to the age of these characters when I adapted it. I knew their voice and what they were going through. And it was most important to me that I remained as faithful to the source material as possible. I had to expand it, of course, but I wanted to make sure his themes remained constant throughout the adaptation.

When Dread premiered at FrightFest in 2009, it wasn’t just another Barker adaptation. This was something else entirely. Rooted in trauma and slowly simmering with existential tension, Anthony Diblasi’s feature debut took one of Barker’s rare non-supernatural short stories and pulled it into focus, transforming it into a harrowing meditation on fear, obsession, and the ways unresolved trauma corrodes the human psyche.
Now, nearly 15 years later, Diblasi’s Dread returns to UK screens via horror platform Nyx, and with it comes a chance to re-examine a film that feels eerily more relevant with age. Adapted from a short story in Barker’s Books of Blood, the narrative follows a group of students as they embark on a fear study—interviewing people about their phobias in an attempt to “understand” dread. But what begins as a curious psychological experiment slowly mutates into something far more invasive, and far more dangerous.

When you end up making an all-time classic movie, there’s a more than insignificant chance that a sequel will happen. This can be something that happens almost immediately like the Friday the 13th or Saw franchises or it can be a part of this new breed of legacy sequels that occur 20, 30, or even 40 years after their original entries. Both of these can work with the immediacy of striking while the iron is hot and following trends immediately or by being patient and tugging on the public’s nostalgia strings by bringing out the original actors and creative team. What doesn’t work usually is what The Descent Part 2 did, with original creator Neil Marshall stepping aside and the movie releasing four years after the original. It already had an uphill battle going against the first movies powerhouse out of nowhere showing and its… admittedly not as good. It either...

Monster movies are a popular subgenre that often features unique, threatening creatures, resulting in exciting and thrilling narratives, but a few monster films over the years have taken longer to earn proper appreciation. Many of these films fall into the horror and science-fiction genre, from the underrated creature film Deep Rising to the now-deemed cult classic Anaconda. The reasons for the poor box office performances of these monster movies include unfortunate release dates, deceptive marketing, and unintentional campy tones audiences couldn't get behind.
Regardless of whether audiences have changed their tune about such monster movies, the response upon the films' release was less than enthusiastic. Though it's understandable why a handful of monster films were unsuccessful, it's a shame considering they contain enjoyable components that should have been more than enough to lead them to success at the box office.

The dawn of the modern century brought a new age for the horror genre. Indeed, the 2000s saw horror continue to thrive and scare a new generation of horror lovers with thrilling new films. Saw, The Descent, The Ring, and American Psycho are a few modern classics that helped turn this exciting decade into one of the best for the genre. But the new decade also came with its failures.

‘Dog Soldiers’ director Neil Marshall has announced that a sequel to his werewolf movie is not going ahead. The 2002 horror flick follows a small squad of soldiers who are sent to meet with a special ops unit in the Scottish Highlands, only to find a bloody massacre before they realise they are being hunted by werewolves, and since its release it has gained cult status.Marshall had plans for a sequel titled 'Dog Soldiers 2: Underdogs' but he has now revealed that it won't be happening after negotiations between himself and producer Christopher Figg, and I.P. owner David E. Allen broke down.On Instagram, Marshall posted a picture of the teaser poster for the movie and wrote: “It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that this teaser poster is probably as close as we’ll ever get to a ‘Dog Soldiers’ sequel.“For the past six years,...

Direct sequels are often poorly received for cheapening the impact of a great, original ending. Neil Marshalls 2005 hit, The Descent, had two different endings. The American version of the film clips one minute from the final sequence, ending on Sarahs escape, whereas the full cut reveals Sarah never escapes the cave. American audiences found the unedited ending too bleak. Despite an initial push-back, The Descents hopeless finale has become the stuff of legend among horror fans. Jon Harriss direct sequel, The Descent Part 2, picks up where the edited ending left off. The traumatized Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) wakes up in a hospital without memory of what happened and immediately falls under Sheriff Vaines' (Gavan O'Herlihy) suspicion.

There’s a moment in John Milius’ Conan the Barbarian that always gets to me. It’s that scene right before the final battle when Conan prays to his Cimmerian god and states that no one will remember who he and his companion were – the only thing that matters is that, in that moment, two stood against many. From the battle of Thermopylae to Black Hawk Down, the idea of a small group standing their ground against an overwhelming force is one of the most compelling setups in all of fiction, and this also applies to the horror genre.
Many of our favorite scary stories borrow from this same mythological source, which is why there are countless horror movies about small groups of survivors attempting to defend an isolated location from evil invaders. And in honor of what we’ve now come to know as “Siege Films,” we’ve decided...

Freevee is becoming the home of many lost, forgotten or just bad action movies, and Duchess is another violent critical disaster that is being discovered thanks to its inclusion on Amazons Freevee offshoot. The film that was described by some critics as a "fourth-rate rip-off" of Jason Statham and Guy Ritchies greatest hits, as well as Quentin Tarantinos Kill Bill, scored a dismal 14% Tomatometer score on its release in August, but its current availability on free streaming has seen it jump into the Freevee global Top 10.
Duchess is the story of Scarlett Monaghan, a woman who turns from small-time crook into a brutal vengeance-seeking anti-heroine. After involving herself in a diamond deal that goes wrong, Scarlett finds herself left for dead, but as is the way in these movies, it doesnt take long for her to regain her strength and set out on a one-woman mission to extract her own...

Dog Soldiers and The Descent director Neil Marshall has worked with actress/co-writer Charlotte Kirk on his three most recent films, The Reckoning, The Lair, and Duchess, and they’re continuing their collaboration on the upcoming psychological thriller Compulsion. Deadline reports that Saban Films has secured the domestic distribution rights to the film – and while a release date has not yet been announced, a first look image has been unveiled. You can check that out at the bottom of this article.
With a script written by Marshall, Compulsion is said to be inspired by the old school erotic thrillers of the ’80s and ’90s, like Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct, and Single White Female. This one centers on the dynamically twisted relationship between two women, as both become embroiled in a series of horrific murders on the island of Malta. Neil Marshall has turned out some great horror films in his career. The Descent will forever scare you away from exploring caves, and keep you up with the disturbing imagery laced throughout its runtime. Tales of Halloween features a delightfully twisted short from Marshall that involves pumpkins coming to life and slaughtering everything in their path. He's even recently returned to the realm of horror with The Reckoning and The Lair, which is more than welcome after the dismal reception to his Hellboy reboot. But Marshall's directorial debut, Dog Soldiers, deserves a second look - especially with how it upends what viewers come to expect from a werewolf movie.

Horror movies have been with us for a very, very long time. This genre, despite inducing shock and fear among the viewers, is extremely popular, and starting with Alfred Hitchcock, some directors have made careers by making horrors. George Romero, John Carpenter, and Wes Craven are considered classics, while today, we have a series of new, young directors who are great in the genre.
And since we’re writing this in a period of year when horrors are even more popular than usual, we have found a very interesting report that has seemingly determined the scariest horror movie of all time based on objective scientific criteria.
If you want to know how the guys at Science of Scare determined this and which horror movie actually won the prestigious title, we advise you to stick with us until the end as we are going to reveal absolutely everything you need to know.

Next week’s hyper-contentious election and its face-off between virulently opposed camps has cast a fearful pall over our culture, creating an atmosphere where political terrors are outdoing the movie versions. Why hasn’t someone made a slasher pic about volunteers canvassing door-to-door at dusk?
This uneasy vibe has foregrounded an uncomfortable truth about horror films: how they often come with subtle political messages that are not always subtle enough to obscure which way they might vote in November. (To be clear, films cannot cast votes in a presidential election.) For example, you could easily argue that one of the most blatantly Republican horror movies was The Exorcist, along with the entire satanic-possession genre. In William Friedkin’s 1972 original, science and modern medicine are completely powerless to dent the demon who has possessed the innocent victim, leaving it up to the patriarchal Catholic Church to take on Pazuzu (and forge...

Saturday Night Live has had a number of spooky sketches over the years — from Ichabod Crane quizzing the Headless Horseman about paranormal fellatio, to the campfire horror story about lunching with a 22-year-old aspiring filmmaker. Absolutely terrifying.
While these examples were obviously pretty silly, one of the Lonely Island’s Digital Shorts actually featured some pretty hair-raising jump scares. A lot of them. Like, the whole friggin’ thing is jump scares.
“The Mirror” from a March 2008 episode found Elliot Page being constantly startled by the sudden appearance of a buck-toothed ghoul with a mysterious head wound (Andy Samberg) in the bathroom mirror. It was all a dream, but then it turns out to have been Samberg’s character’s nightmare. No wait, it was a nightmare being shared by Dracula and his live-in partner Debbie Lieberstein?

The Descent Part 2 is a very thrilling follow-up to the phenomenal horror film, but the ending raises many questions. 2009's The Descent 2 focuses on claustrophobic horror, following on from the events of The Descent, which saw a team of female friends on a spelunking expedition that turns into a fight for survival after a species of subterranean monsters called Crawlers are discovered in the caves. The group end up fighting for their lives while fighting with each other. While the premise is straightforward, The Descent 2's ending is much more ambiguous than its predecessor.
Director Jon Harris's sequel to The Descent sends a rattled Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) who returns after surviving the events of The Descent and a rescue team descend back into the caves to find out if any of her friends are still alive. Its not long until Sarahs repressed memories rush back, as do the deadly Crawlers.

Pathé is expanding its library with five titles acquired from London-based production banner Celador Films, including Danny Boyle’s Oscar-winning “Slumdog Millionaire.”
Pathé has collaborated with Celador Films and its founder Paul Smith on the development, production and sales of many movies, including “Slumdog Millionaire” which Pathé sold around the world. When you think of The Sixth Sense, what’s the first thing that comes to mind?
That famous twist, of course!
Okay, maybe the oft-quoted “I see dead people” line edged it out for some of you, but it was the bonkers ending that led to wildfire word of mouth when the film hit theaters back in 1999.

Well, what if we were to tell you that there’s an obscure 2008 Aussie horror flick that contains several equally shocking twists and is just as affecting in its portrayal of the bereaved?
The film is called Lake Mungo.

When it comes to horror movies, we’ve all wondered how our favorite TV characters would fare if they found themselves face-to-face with some of cinema’s most terrifying monsters.
Would they have the skills, guts, or sheer luck to survive, or would they meet a grisly end before the credits roll?
From the detectives of NCIS to the quirky residents of Only Murders in the Building — and yes, even Morgan from High Potential — this list puts some of the most iconic TV characters in a horror movie scenario.

In Wes Craven’s “Scream” — not quite the definitive horror movie but certainly the definitive account of horror fandom — final girl Sidney famously responds to the question of whether she likes scary movies with a resounding no. “What’s the point? They’re all the same,” she says through the phone to the movie’s slasher. “Some stupid killer stalking some big-breasted girl who can’t act who is always running up the stairs when she should be running out the front door.”

From Terrifier 3 to Dawn of the Dead to John Carpenters The Thing, some of the scariest horror movies ever made end on a hauntingly ambiguous note. A cliffhanger ending can serve a few dramatic purposes. In the horror genre, the most common function of a cliffhanger is to leave the audience appropriately unsettled as they exit the theater. After finding out that Sarah is still trapped in the cave at the end of The Descent or David has switched places with Walter at the end of Alien: Covenant, the audience is left deeply disturbed.
Theres a sense of comfort and closure in a definitive ending like Sally escaping from Leatherface at the end of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre or Chris being saved by his best friend at the end of Get Out. Its much more discomforting to get no closure whatsoever in an ambiguous ending like The Shining or The Birds.

Spoopy Season is upon us, dear readers, and any cineaste worth their weight in bone matter is likely scouring the world's many streaming services looking for the best fright flicks available. Most casual horror fans may be content to idly re-watch well-trodden classics like "Halloween," while more enterprising gorehounds will be studiously studying the carefully curated films on Shudder. The jaded, more experienced fright fans, however, will require stronger coffee to get their fear fix, and those brave souls may dive face-first into the overstuffed trough of Night Flight or Eternal Family, looking for oddities that the average soul cannot stand. Are you going to watch a gentle film like "Hocus Pocus" this October, or are you the type to try out "Bloody Muscle Bodybuilder in Hell?"

As we’re well into October, I’m sure plenty of you have already watched more than a few horror movies (as if you need an excuse), but it’s always fun to see what other folks recommend for the spooky season. Kevin Bacon, who I believe has appeared in a few horror movies, took to Instagram to share a list of twenty of his personal favourites.
Audition Don’t Look Now One Cut of the Dead Dawn of the Dead (1978) Shaun of the Dead 28 Days Later Get Out A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night Let The Right One In X Pearl MaXXXine The Witch The Love Witch The Blair Witch Project The Descent Slither Midsommar Martyrs Hereditary Smile Stir of Echoes
A quality list, and as you can see, Bacon appears in a few of them. Bacon’s most recent horror movie was MaXXXine, which appears on the list alongside X and Pearl.

Everyone’s got horror on the mind as we inch closer to Halloween, and that list of “everyone” most definitely includes Kevin Bacon, who has damn sure made his mark on the horror genre over the years. From appearing in the original Friday the 13th to starring in this year’s MaXXXine, Bacon’s horror pedigree is strong – and he’s a genre fan through and through.

Just in time for spooky season, one of the creepiest found footage movies ever has been added back to Netflix! John Erick Dowdles 2014 film, As Above, So Below, is a claustrophobic nightmare. Following Perdita Weeks Scarlett, an unlikely team of twenty-somethings descend into the Parisian catacombs to hunt down the mythic philosophers stone. As they traverse the tunnels, however, the group stumbles into Hell. Dowdles film is reminiscent of Neil Marshalls The Descent, cleverly playing with enclosed spaces to increase the tension and suspense of otherwise mundane scenes. This psychological aspect elevates the movie from horror to pure terror. Regardless of its impressive ability to frighten without any blood or guts, As Above, So Below does not shy away from the more traditional aspects of horror. The film relishes jump scares, gore, and screaming. The ability to effortlessly switch between tone-building and classic tropes makes As Above, So Below a must-watch or an essential rewatch.
