After a long battle with illness, it’s been announced this afternoon that the legendary, Emmy-winning actor Donald Sutherland has passed away in Miami, Florida at the age of 88.
Son Kiefer Sutherland writes on Twitter, “With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
Donald Sutherland made a handful of notable pit stops in the horror genre throughout his multi-decade career on the screen, which kicked off back in the early 1960s. Here in the horror world, Sutherland is known for his roles in Don’t Look Now (1973), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), and most recently, Stephen King adaptation...

Most of the time, Ethan Hawke is an indicator of quality -- or, if not that, then an ambition to make something meaningful. He's always taken the craft of acting seriously (something that spurred a good-natured war of attrition between him and Robin Williams while filming "Dead Poets Society"), but he's not haughty about it. He played a vampiric hematologist for The Spierig Brothers in 2009's "Daybreakers" and even joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his role as an Ammit-worshipping weirdo who pours glass shards in his shoes for "Moon Knight." Also, let's not forget that time he decked himself out in garish accessories to play the incredibly-named Jolly the Pimp in Luc Besson's eye-popping space opera "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" (a reminder that bad people can make spectacular art).
Alas, 2013's "Getaway" is the rare occasion where it's hard to imagine Hawke having signed...

The new trilogy of The Strangers aims to tell the complete story of the mysterious home invaders, diverging from the original by the end of Chapter 1. The films will explore the backstory and motives of the antagonists, making them more realistic and relatable. The producers and director aim to honor the original film while giving fans fresh experiences. They are focused on satisfying both existing fans and a new generation of viewers, offering nods and homages as a bonus for loyal fans.
In the realm of 21st-century horror, few films are as revered as 2008's The Strangers. A no-frills slow-burn masterpiece written and directed by Bryan Bertino, the film follows a troubled couple as they're stalked in their own home by a trio of mysterious home invaders. The film was a surprise box office hit, grossing an impressive $82 million worldwide, more than ten times its production budget.

Beginning with Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist in the '60s and '70s, the best exorcism movies have deftly combined the psychological thrills of the unseen with the visceral and grotesque manifestations of malevolent spirits. Whether it is demons, tormented human souls, gods, or creatures from folklore, exorcists in movies confront the worst and most dangerous entities to crossover into the physical realm. Scary exorcism movies are traditionally based on Catholic or Judeo-Christian mythology. However, Asian filmmakers have also been tapping into Eastern folklore and mythology to contribute to the world's best exorcism movies, giving the overplayed horror subgenre a much-needed shakeup.
Indeed, while movies about demonic possession such as The Pope's Exorcist and The Exorcism of God keep the genre's core traditions alive, others like The Medium, The Wailing, and Keeper of Darkness tread new ground and open new creative avenues for the exorcism subgenre to grow. Today,...

Based on its setup, The New Daughter would appear to be a ghost story. A troubled novelist moves his two children into a large and isolated house in rural South Carolina, and immediately they start to experience things that cannot be so readily explained. The audience might soon expect to see spirits of the dead haunting the film’s family, yet the fact is, something else entirely lurks on this cursed property.
Kevin Costner was coming off positive reviews for his villainous role in the psychological thriller Mr. Brooks when he was cast as the father in The New Daughter. Also joining the first directorial feature from Rec screenwriter Luis Berdejo was Pan’s Labyrinth star Ivana Baquero. The talent behind this adaptation of author John Connolly’s short story piqued an interest at the time, but upon its release in 2009, critics largely panned the film, singling out the pacing, the...

For its list of new releases of February 2022, HBO Max is bringing back one of its biggest original series.
The Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi epic Raised by Wolves helped launch HBO Max back in 2020 and now it’s finally back for another season. Raised by Wolves season 2 premieres with three episodes on Feb. 3. This season will continue the conflict between future atheists and theists on a remote planet, while two androids raise some kids.
February 2022 also sees the end of another, more recent HBO Max hit. Peacemaker airs its finale on Feb. 17. Thankfully that same day sees the premiere of another exciting original. Dream Raider is a Mandarin-language sci-fi thriller that carries some big Inception vibes.
There aren’t many original movies of note this month, but there are a lot of recent hits coming to HBO Max as library titles. Nightmare Alley arrives on Feb. 1, followed by The Many Saints of Newark on Feb.

The greatest month of the year is almost upon us, where normal people embrace the scary movies they might otherwise avoid, and those who live the life year round can let their freak flag fly. The 78th annual Academy Awards were hosted in 2006 and honored the best films from the previous year in 2005. Some of the films released that year that could have been nominated, but weren't, were: Constantine, An American Haunting, In Her Shoes, and House of Wax . Instead the films that were praised and given the biggest nomination, that in the Best Picture category, were: Capote, Crash, Munich, Brokeback Mountain, and Good Night and Good Luck..
Related: Oscars 1998: 2 Best Picture Nominees That Didn't Deserve It (& 8 Replacements)
Looking at this list now, there are a few nominees that haven't aged well and probably didn't deserve the praise they received, and there are definitely a handful of other great films that should have been recognized.

As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.
The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.
Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.
Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.

It might still be six weeks until October, but horror movies are a year-round joy, and several new genre titles are making their way to Hulu next month.
An American Haunting is one of several cinematic takes on the Tennessee legend of the Bell Witch, switching between the 21st and 19th centuries as a teenager experiences the same trauma as another young girl far in the past, which may or may not be caused by witchcraft and a ghostly apparition.
Best known as the team behind anarchic comedy Super Troopers, Broken Lizard also took a far less successful stab at slasher movies with Club Dread, adding to the post-Scream glut of the subgenre’s resurgence with a comedic tale of a serial killer stalking the staff of an island holiday resort.

Spooky season is upon us, and Hulu is getting into the spirit with a number of horror or Halloween-themed offerings on its October line-up.
Along with Hulu originals like the horror anthology “Into the Dark” and the second season of Stephen King’s “Castle Rock,” the streamer is also offering films from the “Saw,” “Blade” and “Hellraiser” franchises beginning next month. Deadpool's monster, $132.4 million three-day opening last weekend was the earliest a movie has ever opened with over $100 million by almost a month. Previously, Alice in Wonderland's $116.1 million opening in the first weekend of March 2010 held that distinction. Prior to that, film's didn't cross the century mark in their opening weekend until the beginning of summer. It certainly is a new era as studios are redefining release patterns every month. This weekend Deadpool doesn't face much competition in the way of new releases and will retain the number one spot handily. The weekend's three new wide releases vying for a spot below Deadpool include Sony's faith-based feature Risen, Focus' Jesse Owens biopic Race and A24's period horror The Witch. Beginning with number one, history shows that when a film opens with over $100 million it tends to drop, on average, around 54.3% in its second weekend. Films that score an "A" CinemaScore or higher,...

Familiarity breeds contempt in this derivative auto-chase thriller
Reading on mobile? Click here to watch the trailer
This slice of stripped-down automotive porn from the director of An American Haunting takes the narrative chassis of Nick of Time (we've kidnapped a loved one, now do what we say or she dies), bolts it on to the body of a Fast and the Furious knock-off (muscle cars driving ridiculously and relentlessly fast through crowded streets), and then films it all in the manner of End of Watch (surveillance cameras lending a "gritty" vérité edge to the increasingly daft action). Ethan Hawke is the steering-wheel spinner whose wife has been Taken (another nod) and who must put the pedal to the metal with a wanton disregard for everyone around him, including accidental passenger Selena Gomez. With its smashy-crashy aesthetic and endless scenes of hyperbolic car-nage, Getaway exhausts the viewer's patience long before the finishing line approaches.

Bad reviews are easy to write. Good reviews, even easier. Middle-of-the-road reviews, on the other hand, are tough to crack. But that’s where I find myself today as I’m putting my thoughts together on John F.D. Taff’s new book The Bell Witch. The book is based on a well-known haunting that took place in Tennessee in the early 1800s. Numerous books have been written on the subject, and films ranging from The Blair Witch Project to An American Haunting have been based at least in part on the legend. Taff’s version is a fictionalized account of what may or may not have actually happened, but a little research shows that he’s sticking quite close to what’s accepted as fact in the case. In Taff’s book, the Bell family begins experiencing strange events that seem to be centered around their daughter, Betsy. When...

“First I’m coming for my wife; then I’m coming for you.” So says Ethan Hawke in the latest Getaway trailer and I guess that we’re meant to take him very very seriously. He is, after all, very serious. But do you get the sense that maybe you’ve seen this movie before? Maybe a dozen times or so, in different iterations?
This particular iteration has a peculiar brand of Wtf, however, and that might have been a good thing with a leading man like Nicolas Cage or even Jason Statham. As it stands, Getaway looks as rote and dull as an explosive car chase movie is likely to be.
Hawke plays our hero, a race car driver whose wife is kidnapped (like ya do) by a shadowy figure with a nefarious and vaguely foreign accent (German? I’m going with German). Said shadowy figure may or may not be Jon Voight.

After running a trailer for the action thriller Getaway starring Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez last month, we realized this was actually the same trailer which arrived in June. That just goes to show you how memorable the film seems to be. Sadly, this second trailer isn't much more engaging and it just highlights the explosions, car crashes and senseless plot following a getaway driver (Hawke) told he must follow directions from a mysterious guy on the phone to save his wife. And Gomez plays a little troublemaker who gets caught up in the nonsense along the way. Yeah, this definitely looks super silly and plainly ridiculous. Here's the new trailer for Courtney Solomon's Getaway from Warner Bros. Pictures: Getaway is directed by Courtney Solomon (An American Haunting, Dungeons & Dragons) and written by Sean Finegan and Gregg Maxwell Parker, making their feature writing debut. The story follows former race...

Movie villains are a special breed, usually choosing to hatch elaborate, complicated schemes to complete a goal that would probably be easier to execute if they just went and did it themselves the old-fashioned way. So when some random bad guy wants something from a bank, does he hire a bunch of goons to rob the place? Maybe commit some kind of fraud to get his hands on it? Nope, he gets a race car driver to do his bidding for him all while on a ticking clock... That's basically the plot of the upcoming thriller "Getaway," which brings together the head-scratching duo of Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez. Directed by Courtney Solomon (“An American Haunting,” "Dungeons & Dragons"—you've been warned) the movie finds Hawke's wife kidnapped, with him being forced to do all kinds of illegal things to set her free. And along for the ride is a hoodie-wearing...

If you did a double-take when you first heard that Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez were in a movie together, or raised your eyebrows when you then heard that the Getaway movie wasn’t about something involving angst-riddled teens and heart-wrenching drama… and, if you thought a selection of new images would clue you in to something beyond cars, explosions, and moody pictures of Hawke and Gomez very near each other… well, frankly, I’ve lost my train of thought.
However it all works out, this Getaway movie looks fantastic. There’s probably a really good reason that Gomez’ character has a custom Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake for Hawke to steal, but… no, I’m kidding.
Still, it may be fun. Have a look at some hot new images, and get ready to choke on everything you ever said about Selena Gomez’ acting ability.

We're in the final days of the summer movie season and what better way to finish it off than a good, cheesy car chase flick? That's certainly what Getaway is hoping for, which is setting itself up to be nothing more than a fun thrillride to top off a pretty explosive summer...with more explosions! Starring Ethan Hawke, Selena Gomez, and John Voight, the Courtney Solomon (An American Haunting) directed pic has a new featurette on deck that highlights the practical effects of...
