Horror, martial arts, sci-fi and more – here’s our pick of 35 genre films you can watch for free on Tubi.
Like any streaming service, particularly of the ad-supported variety, there’s a lot of filler on Tubi, the subscription-free platform which recently made its debut in the UK.
On there you’ll find an array of low-budget documentaries of spurious quality, landfill reality TV and how-did-this-get-made TV movies (Amish Abduction).
Do a bit of digging, though, and you’ll find plenty of movies that are genuinely worth watching, including the work of such respected directors as Michael Mann (Ali), Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), David Fincher (Gone Girl) and Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel).
Look beyond even those worthy films, and Tubi is positively stuffed with genre and cult offerings – sci-fi, horror, comedy, martial arts, thrillers and more besides. Finding these can take a bit of hunting around, however, so...

A new week is here, and it's already mid-October. How did that happen? Halloween is right around the corner, and Netflix is adding a few to their lineup. This week, you can check out a new season of a Netflix Original, a new thriller starring Anna Kendrick, and a new horror movie.
First up this week is season 3 of The Lincoln Lawyer! Mickey Haller is back! As is usual, he will be taking on a huge murder case, and while he'll have to use all his tricks to win, it's also going to be an emotional rollercoaster.
We've come to expect nothing less. It also doesn't hurt (or help) that he is taking on a client who is accused of murdering one of his long-time clients. It should be interesting! The new season hits Netflix on Thursday, Oct 17, 2024.
Take a look at the trailer here:

Plenty of haunted, Halloween and holiday options will crop up on Netflix in the month of October. The harvest doesn’t seem too lean despite the almost five-month writers strike that viewers are sure to feel next year, but at least the WGA and AMPTP have reached a deal, and hopefully, SAG-AFTRA is not too far behind. Luckily, Halloween and fall have a classic canon of films and TV shows that stretches back decades, and some of those staple watches will be available through Netflix throughout the month.
Movies include “Casper,” “Scarface” and the first two “The Amazing Spider-Man” films. There are a few standout new releases on Netflix in October, but it’s a rather quiet month on the world’s most popular streaming service otherwise!
Highlights this month include a brand-new series from Spook Master Mike Flanagan. The Fall of the House of Usher is a gothic tale loosely based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe, and tells the story of two extremely unpleasant siblings whose family dynasty ends up going to hell in a handbasket. Before you ask: yes, Rahul Kohli is in it. That’s all that a lot of people need to know here (we’re people).
Elsewhere, Netflix is dropping a few interesting-looking docuseries, including one on football legend David Beckham. It promises to be an “intimate portrait” of Beckham, and the filmmakers were apparently granted unprecedented access to the sportsman and his family while making it.

Whether or not you believe in life after death, there’s no denying that there’s entertainment to be found in the exploration of the unknown. That’s why I appreciate the extreme popularity of ghost hunting shows despite being a life-long skeptic and understanding that most of these programs greatly exaggerate their findings in the pursuit of ratings.
However, not all paranormal investigators are created equal, with some of them actually having a minimum of respect for the scientific method and operating on a series of rational principles instead of simply reacting to make-believe noises and looking scared for the camera. And luckily for fans of these less sensationalist professionals, Taps (The Atlantic Paranormal Society) investigator and founding member of the original Ghost Hunters, Steve Gonsalves, has just released a memoir detailing his personal experience as a researcher of the supernatural.

Welcome back to Dead Time. Do you believe in ghosts? Even if you’re a skeptic, you’ve probably tuned into at least one of the many TV shows or web series about ghost hunting. I’ve been watching paranormal reality television shows since Ghost Hunters first aired on Syfy in 2004, so this month I wanted to talk to one of the Og ghost hunters, paranormal investigator and researcher Adam Berry.
The original Ghost Hunters featured paranormal investigators Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson, who formed The Atlantic Paranormal Society (Taps) and assembled a team which included Steve Gonsalves and Dave Tango. Each episode followed the Taps team as they explored allegedly haunted locations, and the show became extremely successful. Ghost Hunters eventually spawned several spinoff television series, including Ghost Hunters Academy (2009), a paranormal competition reality show. Welcome back to Dead Time. This month we’re getting technical with paranormal investigator and co-creator of the Estes Method, Connor J. Randall, who you know from Hellier and Spirits of the Stanely. If, like me, you’ve fallen down the Hellier rabbit hole, you know there’s no coming back. The wildly addictive paranormal docuseries follows a team of paranormal investigators on what begins as a search for potential goblins in Kentucky but turns into a much more complicated mystery. After receiving a couple of bizarre emails, paranormal researchers Greg and Dana Newkirk assemble a team which includes filmmaker Karl Pfeiffer and paranormal investigator Connor J. Randall and the team heads to Kentucky in search of answers.
If you’ve seen Hellier, you’ve seen the team use a tool called the Estes Method to attempt to communicate with the entities they are in search of. In 2016, while working at the Stanley Hotel,...

Pearry Reginald Teo, the Singaporean-born genre filmmaker behind the Bai Ling-starring The Gene Generation and Dmx‘s last movie, Fast Vengeance, has died. He was 44.

Teo also served as an executive producer on Warner Bros.’ Cloud Atlas, directed by the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer.

Entertainment, news, and the paranormal are connected more than you might think. I find it interesting that every person in the paranormal community I’ve talked with is also a horror nerd like me—the horror genre and belief in the unexplained are undeniably intertwined.
That’s why for this month’s Dead Time, I wanted to talk with paranormal journalist, TV host, podcaster, and fellow spooky nerd Aaron Sagers.
During his extensive career as a journalist, Sagers has appeared on numerous TV shows and online videos. You’ve probably seen him analyzing bizarre videos on Paranormal Caught on Camera on Travel Channel and Discovery Plus or hosting shows like Discovery’s Paranormal Lockdown: Evidence Revealed or the web series Ripley’s Believe It or Not! With its list of new releases for February 2023, Disney+ is going all out to honor one of the biggest Marvel movies of the past year (and the one with the studio’s best Oscar chances yet).
Simply put: February 2023 belongs to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on Disney+. The Black Panther sequel arrives to the streaming service on Feb. 1. Wakanda Forever serves as both a fitting sendoff to the iconic Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa and a pretty fun introduction to Tenoch Huerta as Namor.
Following the streaming arrival of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the Panther party is just getting started. Feb. 8 sees the arrival of Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. That will be followed up on Feb. 22 with Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever. As Kindred Spirits enters its seventh season, stars Amy Bruni, Adam Berry, and Chip Coffey are nowhere close to giving up the ghost on paranormal reality TV. But the trio has been considering what their legacy might be on the entertainment genre and the paranormal community at large.

Since its premiere in 2016 on Destination America and TLC, where it aired concurrently before moving to Travel Channel in 2019, Kindred Spirits has focused on haunted people before locations. Throughout the course of an episode, Bruni and Berry, both executive producers and alums of the Ghost Hunters franchise,...

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” makes its Disney+ debut in February, but another title joining the library this month has us waiting eagerly.
The limited series “Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever” dives into the film’s soundtrack, from Ludwig Goransson’s score to the chanting and vocals of Wakandan tribes. “The sonic world of Wakanda is evolving,” music consultant Seni Saraki says in the show teaser. It’s impossible to imagine Ryan Coogler’s film series separate from that world, and deeply exciting for “Black Panther” fans to watch that evolution. “Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever” premiers February 22 on Disney+.

“1995” declares a 1970s-style title card in the opening minutes of Kyle Edward Ball’s Skinamarink, a film presented in fake grain filters meant to suggest the scratchy 35mm video nasties of that era. The date proves totally irrelevant to Skinamarink’s minimal plot; at best it vaguely informs the technology we see in the two-story suburban household where the entire film takes place. This might pass as a conscious irony, but over the ensuing 100 minutes it becomes far more plausible that this semiotically lazy confusion of time and history is a quality of Ball as director, and not of his film’s barely glimpsed preschool-age protagonists.
Skinamarink, a crowdfunded passion project for writer-director-editor-YouTuber Ball, is a proudly experimental film in the sense that it is brutally formless and repetitive and masks these qualities with a veneer of faux-ethereal vagueness. Ostensibly the chronicle of two young children trapped with their single...

Eli Roth burst onto the horror scene back in 2002 with the comedic gorefest "Cabin Fever," and followed that up with 2005's "Hostel," labeled gruesome torture porn. Roth was synonymous with carnage for a while. Still, his work on the PG-rated film "The House With A Clock In Its Walls'' and "Fin," a documentary about the illegal finning of sharks, hints at a move away from the cheap thrills of gritty horror toward a more mature style and focus.
A quick look at the audience ratings for his gorefest films suggests that moviegoers would welcome a change from the filmmaker, but his latest decisions as a producer had quite a few people scratching their heads. In 2021, Eli Roth took a break from creating fictionalized horror and produced the T+E series "Eli Roth Presents: A Ghost Ruined My Life," which chronicles and dramatizes the traumatic experiences of ordinary people who stumbled onto paranormal phenomena.

It's not surprising that Eli Roth has transitioned somewhat into the role of TV host. Roth is a veritable encyclopedia of genre film and loves just talking movies. As far as movie geeks go, he's also a little more presentable and "TV ready" than the average horror fan. Roth has already hosted three seasons of "AMC Visionaries: Eli Roth's History of Horror" where the writer, producer and director interviews famous luminaries and storytellers from the vast world of horror. In what might be his most disturbing film, Roth also directed the Discovery+ documentary, "Fin," produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, that exposed the worldwide corruption of the shark fin industry where hundreds of thousands of sharks are murdered and maimed every year.

Few setups and storylines have been explored and exploited more in the horror genre than the team of paranormal explorers contacting the other side and being confronted with their skeptical beliefs being confirmed wrong. From “The Legend of Hell House” to “Grave Encounters” and its sequel, “Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary” to the celebrated South Korean effort “Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum“, to an entire franchise of TV shows based around “Ghost Hunters” performing this around the world, this concept is a huge part of the genre with entries being found around the globe. This Malaysian Barnstorm Entertainment-Brando Studios co-production, from director Brando Lee and starring a slew of recognizable American actors and actresses, arrives as a new entry in the style on October 7 from Outsider Pictures.

There’s a chill in the air. Autumn leaves are beginning to peek through the trees. Pumpkin spice lattes abound. If you’re lucky, though, you just might catch a glimpse of giant skeletons haunting a suburban lawn. That’s right, Halloween is upon us once again. Whether you enjoy watching paranormal television shows like Ghost Adventures or you’re an experienced paranormal investigator, learning about the history behind some of the most haunted locations in America is not just educational, it can be fun. For this month’s Dead Time, I talked with an expert on haunted history, who not only tells the stories behind historical locations with a history of otherworldly activity, but he also strives to preserve those histories.
With over a decade of experience as a paranormal investigator, Conner Gossel created the popular Instagram account Haunted Historian and also hosts The Haunted Historian podcast. Conner travels the country to explore famous haunted locations and also showcases little-known locales to share the histories behind those venues.

Paranormal investigations have long enjoyed their fair share of spins onscreen, from horror franchises like the wildly popular “Paranormal Activity” series to small screen reality TV takes like “Ghost Hunters” and “Paranormal State,” but recent iterations of the horror subgenre haven’t always utilized such stories as dramatic deep dives into the existence of the living. Paul Harrill’s Sundance premiere “Light From Light” offers a deep-thinking corrective and a push away from jump-scare-heavy entries, using timeless horror concepts like “ghosts!” and “haunted houses!” and “paranormal inspections!” to explore other facets of the human condition. In short, the most fascinating beings in the film aren’t necessarily the dead ones.
Per the film’s official synopsis: “Gifted with sometimes-prophetic dreams and a lifelong interest in the paranormal, Sheila (Marin Ireland) is asked to investigate a potential haunting at a Tennessee farmhouse. It’s there she meets Richard (Jim Gaffigan), a...

We speak with Grant Wilson about A&e's Ghost Hunters update and how to keep paranormal investigations fresh for a new era.
Grant Wilson is a ghost hunter. He is also a husband, father, recorded musician, published author, tabletop gaming company entrepreneur, YouTuber, and – at the moment I meet up with him in New York City – just a guy who blends in with every other person having lunch.
But for 15 years the world has publicly known him as a guy who explores unexplained phenomena on the unscripted paranormal reality series Ghost Hunters — which returns with its first new episodes since 2016 tonight at 9 p.m. on A&e.
