LCD Soundsystem’s First Song in Five Years Will Be for Noah Baumbach’s ‘White Noise’
Image
Noah Baumbach’s extremely wild looking adaptation of Don DeLillo’s (arguably un-adaptable) classic White Noise will include the first new bit of music from LCD Soundsystem in five years, Variety reports.

All that’s known about the song at the moment is that it’s called “New Body Rhumba” and that it will be released later this year. How exactly it will fit into the film — which stars Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, Don Cheadle, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Andre 3000 — remains a mystery. (Also, we hope the Airborne Toxic Event,...

Noah Baumbach’s ‘White Noise’ Set As Opening-Night Film At 60th New York Film Festival
Image
Following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival Film, Noah Baumbach’s feature take of Don DeLillo’s 1985 novel White Noise will also open the 60th New York Film Festival, making its North American premiere at Alice Tully Hall on September 30.

In the Netflix movie, Adam Driver plays Jack Gladney, an ostentatious “Hitler Studies” professor and father-of-four whose comfortable suburban college town life and marriage to the secretive Babette (Greta Gerwig) are upended after a horrifying nearby accident creates an airborne toxic event of frightening and unknowable proportions. DeLillo’s novel is known for being a pop-philosophical nightmare on unbounded consumerism, ecological catastrophe, and the American obsession with death.

“In 1985 my father and I drove from Brooklyn to see Kurosawa’s Ran open the 23rd NYFF, the same year that he brought home the hardback of Don DeLillo’s White Noise,” said Baumbach. “Opening the 60th NYFF with White...

The Netflix title, starring Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig, will have its North American premiere at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall in Manhattan on Sept. 30.

Baumbach’s adaptation of White Noise, the 1985 book long considered to be unfilmable, stars Driver as a professor of Hitler Studies in the Midwest whose suburban town life and marriage to his secretive wife (Gerwig) are upended after a nearby accident creates a frightening airborne toxic event.

Flashback: Bob Dylan Sings ‘It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue’ and ‘Tupelo Honey’ With Van Morrison
Image
Earlier this week, Bob Dylan fans learned that the next chapter of his Bootleg Series will focus on his early-Eighties work. The focal point of Springtime in New York: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 16 (1980–1985) is studio outtakes from 1983’s Infidels, but there’s also 1980 tour rehearsals and material recorded for 1981’s Shot of Love and 1985’s Empire Burlesque.

“It’s quite often said that Bob lost his way in the Eighties,” said a source close to the Dylan camp. “But he was searching for his way in the Eighties. This set shows that search.

Jason Momoa Made a Surprise Appearance on Last Night's SNL
Image
Aquaman star Jason Momoa made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live this weekend, providing one of the most amusing moments from the show's newest episode. The second episode of season 46, the show was hosted by comedian Bill Burr, marking his first time hosting. Country singer Morgan Wallen was initially set as the musical guest, but he was pulled from the show days before, replaced at the last minute by Jack White.

One sketch has Beck Bennett playing fictional celebrity Benji Trunk, spoofing some of the black-and-white videos made by famous people this year on social media. "I've also got a bunch of fun auditions and really cool stuff coming up, but I'm here today because the state of the world is so awful," Benji explains. "I can't just sit back and be an actor anymore."

Beck's character then launches a political rant in the form of a rap song called "Enough is Enough,...

‘So You Think You Can Dance’ in a virtual world? Executive producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe twirls around some ideas for Season 17
Image
When Fox officially renewed its dance competition series “So You Think You Can Dance” for a 17th season in February, little did they know reality shows that rely on live taping such as “American Idol” and “The Voice” would no longer be a reality, given the need for social distancing during the Covid-19 pandemic.

SEEMary Murphy (‘So You Think You Can Dance’) dubs b-boy Bailey Munoz ‘the Rudy of this competition’ [Exclusive Video Interview]

“Sytycd” executive producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe has definitely been ruminating about a couple different scenarios for how the summer show would go on in this era of social-distancing and shared a few of his ideas with Dance Spirit Magazine.

“We’re scheduled to start shooting live tapings of Season 17 of ‘Sytycd’ in August,” he said, while adding, “We don’t know how many people will be allowed in the studio, and how many live shows we can do,...

Jimmy Kimmel Says “Enough Is Enough,” Calls For Trump To Be Voted Out In Emotional Monologue About George Floyd’s Death
Image
Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue was somber and serious tonight, as the late-night host shared his thoughts on the George Floyd death in Minneapolis and its aftermath.

Kimmel ran down the facts of the case as he saw them, and lamented “the senseless acts of violence that were brought on by a senseless act of violence,” and “the loop we get stuck into,” which, he claimed, devolves into a litany of finger-pointing and blame shifting.

But worse, Kimmel said, was President Donald Trump’s Twitter threat to shoot looters.

“I especially want to pose this question to older people who have seen (racial conflict) before: “Is this who you want leading us for President?” He concluded, “Enough is enough. We’ve got to vote this guy out already.”

Kimmel then shared a video that has gone viral. In it, Nashville actor Tyler Merritt, in a close-up, recites a monologue titled Before You Call The Cops.

Film Review: My Friend “A” (2018) by Takahisa Zeze
The fractured narrative technique has given us a number of great Japanese films during the years, with “Rage” and “Noise“, being the first that come to mind. Takahisa Zeze, who has long since refrained from his pinku past, presents a film that uses this narrative technique in a production that combines exploitation, thriller, and social commentary.

The script is based on the novel “Yuuzai” by Gaku Yakumaru and revolves around two men, who find themselves working together in a small factory. The first one is Junichi Masuda, an ex-journalist who has given up on his work after an incident with one of his articles and is also tormented by his actions as a school kid, involving the suicide of one of his classmates. The second is Hideto Suzuki, a man who tries to be alone as much as possible, and is also tormented by his actions as a school kid.

Le ‘Noise’ vérité – Interview with Yusaku Matsumoto: I somehow linked the indiscriminate killing of innocent people with performing an act of assassination on one’s own self
Yusaku Matsumoto was born in Kobe in 1992. He entered the Osaka Visual Arts College and started directing commercials when he was 21. He is also the director of Extreme Vr. ‘Noise’ is his film debut and and was officially invited to the 41st Montreal World Film Festival and 25th Raindance Film Festival.

We speak with him about Akihabara, the characters in the movie, having idols as protagonists, gruesome crimes and the particular one that provided the basis of the film, and many other topics.

What was your first impression of Akihabara?

I was born in Kansai region, so I knew Akihabara merely from the TV screen. I saw all that medley of underground idols and otakus; however I have to admit that when I first came to Tokyo for work – and actually I constantly had to do some errands in Akihabara – the image I perceived with my eyes was slightly different...

The non-profit centers on spreading the word about the benefits of Transcendental Meditation. Sounds like a laugh riot, right? Actually, everyone fared pretty well... "David Lynch... the man who made me afraid of hallways." Musician Kevin Drew, as an introduction "Live abortions! Raise your hand if you've had an abortion... or you can just slap me five when you leave." Amy Poehler "I love rap music but I despise poetry." Chris Parnell, prior to rapping "The Ballad of the Skeletons" with Amy Poehler "This should go for two or three hours. Let's round it up to six... Follow your inner moonlight; don't hide the madness. We'll get warmed up with... A Fart Noise Whose password requires simulated flatulence? I don't know, but let's hear it for Beca for going with the arm-blowing technique. LatinoBuzz: Interview With Actor Richard Cabral of 'Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones'
Growing up in East Los Angeles with a single mom, Richard Cabral was in a gang by 13 years old, made his first trip to jail at 14 and by 15 was addicted to crack cocaine. His teenage years were a series of trips in and out of jail. At the age of 20 Cabral was arrested and charged with attempted murder and would spend a year in jail while he awaited trial. If convicted, he was facing a sentence of 35 years to life. Making a plea deal gave him a reduced sentence of 5 years of which he would serve 27 months. Upon release he found a support system in Homeboy Industries, Father Gregory 'G-Dog' Boyle's charity, where ex-gang members are provided jobs as an alternative to gang life providing they stay clean. It was there that led to Cabral being cast as an extra in CSI: Miami. Earlier this month we saw the release of Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones featuring Richard in the role of Arturo. LatinoBuzz got to hear from Cabral about his transition in life.

Latinobuzz: You are from East La and joined a gang at 13 years old. What was it about that time and place that you felt that it was yours and your peers only option?

Richard: I feel that in all kids that I've came across, that at the age of 12-13 is a big transition . They begin forming the Young Adult there going to become, here molding . I can't put a "name" on it but it's something. Your trying to find yourself, were getting ready to go to High School and as this world teaches you, you must "belong" to something. (So we Belong to Something)

Latinobuzz: I did a piece on Father G-Dog – how important was Homeboy Industries to your spiritual evolution and why are organizations like them always in jeopardy of losing funding when they change so many lives?

Richard: 'Homeboy Industries' is a great organization but beyond that, it is Father Greg. He is the reason why I was given this second chance. Of course other things play a factor on this amazing journey I've gone through, but if there was no Father Greg there would be nothing. I believe 'organizations' like these are always in jeopardy because what we are taught in this sickening world (“Society”) is "greed" and we as people are not one. 'Majority of "minds" are warped into the belief of the only person worth helping is themself. People think others that come from gangs, poverty, drugs are below them. Which is bull-shit because the whole world is going through problems, were all suffering together, people are just too blind to see.

Latinobuzz: Is it crazy to think that you would be a part of a blockbuster film franchise when you were facing 35 years to life?

Richard: Ha! It's ludicrous to even say it in the same line:) Well, that's what we are taught to believe and that's what I would have stated when I was sitting in a cell. But the power of belief, of God is beyond what mere mortals can Imagine. There is no restrictions in my Life. If I do what I love, work night and day, and I'm open to the spirits. that's when the "Greats" take over.

Latinobuzz: How important is 'Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones' for Latino filmmaking?

Richard: Huge! This is the first time in history that Latinos have done it and made the "Studios" this amount of money and signed to a franchise. There is a wave of seasoned and young Latino actors right now! We're making money for the studios and were bringing the Noise, there's no stopping it.

Latinobuzz: What moment as being an artist impacted you the most?

Richard: The true meaning of an artist/actor is opening my heart to the audience and at the same time opening their heart. Through sharing my pain I can possibly heal your pain, there is no other feeling like it, money doesn't compare. This is the true meaning of Art. I will attempt to do it till my dying day. The theater is the 'church' and when I'm on that stage I am the Priest/Pastor, it is a pure spiritual journey for me.

Latinobuzz: You've cited Miguel Pinero and Stephen Adly Guirgis as writers that understood your world. What was it about these two, very much New Yorkers, made you feel that way?

Richard: Learning the craft as an actor in Los Angeles is a very hard thing to do, in my opinion. We all come from a certain world and when you start learning the craft, you need material to read/study that you can relate to. We do not have too many Latino writers on the West Coast that I was able to relate to (or at least, I didn't know at the time). I came from the streets, so the most published authors had no relation to my world. As soon as I picked up Pinero & Guirgis, it was all over. It was my world, just in a different location. They cracked me open inside and out. They talked about the "inside" of the barrio, the emotions, the stories that people know is happening but were too scared to talk about. "Sun Always Shines for The Cool" and "Den of Thieves" will always be my favorites/breakthroughs.

Latinobuzz: What's your dream role?

Richard: I can't point my finger on a “dream role”, but the day's that I'm able to fulfill the stories of the hood/barrio on film, those will be great days. The stories of why people from the barrio become what they've become. To show that sensitive side of a man, its always filled with macho bull-shit, but we must see the other side (Fathers and Sons). In film and television they never get the good stuff, while at least I feel on my behalf.

Latinobuzz: What do you want to leave behind when it's all said and done?

Richard: When I die I want a child that never met me, to hear were I came from and what I accomplished and for him or her to live their life to the fullest and do what they were put on this world to do. No limitations, blowing past everybody's expectations. Screw whatever body thinks!

Kristen Stewart Returning for Snow White and the Huntsman Sequel without Rupert Sanders?
Snow White and the Huntsman has been one of the biggest films of the year, and a big success for all involved, not least Universal, with the film taking almost $400m. across the world.

As such, there’s been talk of a sequel ever since its release this summer, but the issue became a little more complicated, following the media’s attention on Kristen Stewart and director Rupert Sanders.

Sanders made a very promising feature directorial debut at the helm of the original, but following the reports over the summer, whether he and/or Stewart would be returning for the sequel was soon called into question, and there was talk of the sequel centring instead on The Huntsman, Chris Hemsworth.

According to an insider speaking to Radar Online, however, it looks like that may no longer be the case, with Stewart reportedly signing on for the sequel, without Sanders returning.

Rupert Sanders to Direct The Juliet for Next Project, Pitched as “Bonnie And Clyde in Space”
As we were waiting to find out whether Rupert Sanders would return to direct a sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman or move on to another property next, it looks like the latter option has prevailed. Though it's not the one we expected. Sanders is reportedly signed on to helm The Juliet, an adaptation of a short story by Alfred Bester. There are few details on the story at this time, other than it is a sci-fi romance tonally similar to Bonnie and Clyde and set in the near future. Henry Bean (Noise) wrote the script for the Sony Pictures and New Regency film. Hit the jump for more on The Juliet and what this means for the other projects Sanders' was reportedly circling. Deadline reports that Sanders will indeed make Bester's The Juliet his next directorial effort, though The Playlist brought the Bonnie and Clyde reference to our attention.

Film Review: ‘Pitch Perfect’ Succeeds By Making Fun of Itself
Chicago – When we last saw Anna Kendrick, she was the mid-twentysomething girlfriend of cop Jake Gyllenhaal in “End of Watch.” This week, she reverts back to freshman year in college, portraying a rebellious D.J. and songstress in the not-taking-themselves-seriously “Pitch Perfect.”

Rating: 3.5/5.0

This is harmless fluff reflecting the “American Idol”-ization of the culture, where even the most off-key citizens can find redemption through singing. The strange path to all this is competitive a-cappella teams (no instruments, all vocal) from various colleges, which apparently has swept the nation like goldfish swallowing. From the opening note to the final coda, plucky co-ed gals harmonize and choreograph themselves into our hearts. Who needs Psych 101 when you have four part choral sisters and Bruno Mars riffs?

The film opens with “the year before” as The Bellas, a Barden University a-cappella team, are about to take the stage against their archrivals, the all-male Treblemakers.

Super Review: Wasting Another Night On Planning My Revenge
James Gunn is one of those directors like Joss Whedon or Quentin Tarantino, where you feel like he's accomplished so much more than he's actually done. I have an inexplicable love for James Gunn, but honestly, he's done Slither and the PG Porn parodies and that's about it. Sure, he was mostly responsible for Tromeo and Juliet and yes, he did earn screenwriting credit on Scooby-Doo 2, but his resume is kind of bare. So I was rooting hard for Super, and not just because Gunn hired one of our Pajibans to work on his film. I love the concept of the vigilante superhero or the homegrown maniac fighting back against the people who have wronged him. Gunn had a very original idea six years ago when he wrote the script, which is when he should have made the film. Instead, he's now going to get moderately unfair comparisons to Kick-Ass,...

Tim Robbins Will Father Evil In Green Lantern
We haven.t seen enough of Tim Robbins. He hasn.t had a significant role in a successful movie since Mystic River in 2003. It.s not that he hasn.t put out quality work, he was fantastic in City of Ember, and he had a lot of fun with a little indie called Noise, but no one showed up for either of them. You.re unlikely to miss his next project. THR says he.s joined the cast of Green Lantern. Unfortunately, it doesn.t sound like it.s the significant role he deserves. Instead he.s been cast as Senator Hammond, father of the movie.s villain, Dr. Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard). So while he.s at least partially to blame for raising a psychic powered person of pure evil, it.s unlikely he.ll get a lot of screen time. That.ll go to his son, as he...

Celebrity Birthdays - 03/20/09
We have some pretty famous birthdays to report to you today! Can you guess who they are based on the following facts? You can catch him playing in Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve, and Ocean's Thirteen playing the role of Saul Bloom. He's quite the Harry Potter star, first appearing in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Perhaps he was the prisoner? He may not be with us any longer, but he certainly left his mark on generations of children in Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood! She was a witch of a woman in Little Black Book who partially redeemed herself through Saving Grace. He's nothing if not a hottie! He started out on The O.C. before playing a recurring role on Smallville, but his most recent role is Charlie Hogan in Privileged. From Boston Public to The War at Home to Prison Break, he's a familiar face on television. Sued a...

Trio book roles in 'Ramona'
Sarah Polley and Lori Chodos in Ramona (1988)

Sundance 2009: Top 10 New Faces
  • Every film festival allows for the opportunity to admire new acting talent and Sundance this year was no different. Here are some names that casting agents should look out for. 10.) Chloe Moretz (500 Days of Summer) Chloe Moretz might be a child actress, but her resume would take up many pages in the phone book. She did some voice work for Bolt and she was hired on several horror movies as the obligatory “little girl” in a horror film, but I imagine it is a small role in 500 Days of Summer that might break the ice. She plays the most stable character of the film in the form of a smart talking, 5th or 6th grader, younger sister role with the qualities of a 24 hour on call shrink. In her handful of scenes she is beautifully juxtaposed to Joseph Gordon-Levitt's central character. 9.) Margarita Levieva (Spread) & (Adventureland) Levieva has been

Opening This Week
By Neil Pedley

This week sees the return of the Wachowski brothers, Tarsem Singh ("The Cell") and Henry Bean ("The Believer") to the big screen, not to mention new films from documentarians Nick Broomfield ("Tupac and Biggie") and Doug Pray ("Scratch"). On the other hand, after running around Tribeca, we still need to catch up on last week's releases.

"The Babysitters"

The idea of the spunky teenage boy succumbing to the allure of an experienced older woman is the kind of Hollywood golden goose that launches major careers (think Dustin Hoffman). But when the roles are reversed, the result is the directorial debut of David Ross that sees an entrepreneurial high schooler (Katherine Waterston, daughter of Sam) and her friends turn their babysitting ring into a call girl service, realizing there are alternative ways to pay for college besides waiting tables. It stars when one local dad (John Leguizamo) goes...

Richard Gere at an event for I'm Not There (2007)
Noise
Richard Gere at an event for I'm Not There (2007)
AFI Fest

Henry Bean wrote the excellent Richard Gere thriller Internal Affairs, and made his directorial debut with a 2001 Sundance Film Festival prize-winner The Believer that put Ryan Gosling on the map in the role of a self-hating Jew who becomes a neo-Nazi.

But Bean has been inactive in recent years, except for a writing stint on Basic Instinct 2 that he might prefer to forget. So expectations were high for his sophomore helming effort, Noise, which had its premiere at the AFI Fest and which will be released next year by ThinkFilm. But despite its intriguing premise, the movie is a disappointing misfire.

David (Tim Robbins) is a New York lawyer obsessed with urban noise in general and obstreperous car alarms in particular. Instead of allowing his sleep, his sex life, and his general tranquility to be interrupted, he decides to take action against the offending vehicles with hammers, golf clubs and other available weapons. His behavior lands him in repeated trouble with the law and also wreaks havoc with his marriage to a musician (the lovely Bridget Moynahan).

While it's easy to identify with David's frustration and rage, the film keeps an ironic distance from its protagonist, allowing us to see him alternately as a put-upon hero and as a loon who is as much of an irritant as the thoughtless drivers he attacks. Vigilante movies are becoming more prevalent as the perils of urban living mount, but Noise is one of the few to take a comic view of the subject. While this approach yields a few droll moments, Bean's script ultimately is too mild to have much impact. The performances don't maximize the comic potential, either. Robbins fails to bring the requisite intensity to the role; he's too aware that the movie is a daffy satire, and he keeps winking at the audience. The same phenomenon of an actor standing outside his role undermines William Hurt's exaggerated performance as David's nemesis, New York's self-satisfied Mayor Schneer. Even granting that a lot of contemporary politicians are a long way from being Mensa members, Hurt comes off as such a buffoon that it would be hard to imagine him being elected dog catcher.

The women fare better. Moynahan is thoroughly convincing as David's beleaguered wife, and Margarita Levieva is warmly appealing as the Russian woman who takes David in when Moynahan kicks him out. However, a sex scene in which David and his new love invite another woman for a threesome seems utterly pointless.

Bean pulls off a couple of clever split-screen episodes imagining alternate ways in which David might react to a tense confrontation. But the look of the film is drab, and the music by Phillip Johnston punctuates the action a little too obviously. Bean doesn't demonstrate the same flair for comedy that he's shown in more dramatic work, so Noise seems like a strained novelty item without much boxoffice potential.

Bean doubles 'Down by the River'
  • For those who haven’t had the chance to see indie film The Believer (Ryan Gosling’s career-launching stint) back in 01’, there will be plenty of upcoming ops to see writer-director Henry Bean at work. Via Variety comes news that the seasoned writer and now director will tap into his two talents to adapt the big screen the novel of Down by the River for Universal Pictures. Scott Stuber and Mary Parent are producing along with Peter Landesman and Naomi Despres.Sounding like Coen Bros. territory with No Country for Old Men, Charles Bowden's novel revolves around a 1995 murder in El Paso, Texas, that was originally believed to be the result of a botched carjacking but was later tied to the victim's brother's work busting drug runners for the Drug Enforcement Administration. Story eventually implicates the uppermost reaches of the Mexican government. Pegged for some sort of release
