Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Top Gun: Maverick embroiled in another lawsuit
Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
The 2022 mega hit Top Gun: Maverick has been hit with another lawsuit – this one involving its screenwriter’s cousin.

A year after one case was dismissed, Paramount Pictures again finds itself in court in a lawsuit related to its 2022 blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick. This time, the cousin of one of its credited screenwriters is suing the studio, alleging that he carried out uncredited – and unpaid – work on its script.

The lawsuit’s plaintiff is Shaun Gray, the cousin of screenwriter Eric Singer. Gray’s better known for his digital effects work on such films as Get Smart and Piranha 3D, but according to his complaint, Gray spent “five months” working on the Maverick script at the invitation of his cousin.

Maverick’s script was ultimately credited to Singer, Christopher McQuarrie and Ehren Kruger, but Gray alleges that he “wrote key scenes for the screenplay that became the film’s central edge-of-your-seat dramatic action sequences.

5 Sitcom Reboots That Time Forgot
Image
As Fuller House, The Conners and Frasier — by that, we mean the crappier Frasier — have illustrated, no sitcom is ever truly finished, so long as it’s still profitable and the majority of its cast members haven’t been canceled.

There’s certainly been a glut of sitcom reboots in recent years. I mean, does anyone even remember that they brought back Murphy Brown for an 11th season?

A lot of people might assume that this is a new trend, and a symptom of our current nostalgia-obsessed culture, but these throwback cash-grabs go way, way back. Some sitcom reboots have been completely forgotten about at this point, such as…

Anne Hathaway: Net Worth, Age, Height & Everything You Need To Know About The Oscar-Winning Actress
Image
Anne Hathaway is an actress famous for her bubbly personality, and her high net worth certainly doesn't hurt her sunniness. Hathaway was a breakout star from her first film, Disney's The Princess Diaries (2001). While she continued to make family-friendly fare, like Ella Enchanted (2004) and Hoodwinked (2006), Hathaway also transitioned into both mainstream Hollywood comedies — The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Get Smart (2008) — and arthouse Oscar films — Brokeback Mountain (2005), Rachel Getting Married (2008). Hathaway won an Oscar for her role as Fantine in 2012's Les Misérables, and she remains at the top of the A-list.

Hathaway was born in Brooklyn, New York City to parents Gerald and Kate, and is the second of three siblings. Named after Shakespeare's wife and the daughter of an actress, Hathaway knew from an early age that she wanted to perform. Outside of acting, Hathaway dated Italian real estate developer Raffaello Follieri from 2004-2008. Their relationship ended after Follieri pled...

The 15 Best TV Shows Of The 1960s
Image
Although most of today's viewing audiences weren't watching 1960s television live, it speaks to the quality and relatability of shows from that decade that many of its shows are cemented in popular culture. If they're not being rerun on cable or made available on several different streaming apps, they're being transformed for modern viewers with feature-length homages, for better or worse.

From spy dramas and family sitcoms to science fiction adventures and dark gothic soap operas, the 1960s had a little something for everyone. When we look back on the decade's television, we see a rapidly changing landscape, one where shows nostalgic for a simper time screen opposite imaginative, forward-thinking programs. Although many 1960s shows feel very much of their time, there's a stylish charm that makes them still enjoyable to watch today.

Here are some of the best TV shows that the 1960s has to offer -- take a...

Best Action-Comedy TV Shows of All Time, Ranked
Image
From film to television, the action genre has long been one of the best sources of escapist entertainment. Known for playing into a variety of popular tropes and clichs, it houses some brilliant heroes, eccentric villains and over-the-top premises. Since the rise of the genre, it has also been associated with comedy, with the likes of buddy cop detective movies and parodies showing how funny action can be.

The blend of comedy and action continues to be a fan favorite, both on film and TV, with such classics as Austin Powers and Get Smart being a testament to this. While some shows are a blend of multiple genres, even leaning more on horror or fantasy, others embrace parody and satire, using action as a vehicle to entertain while poking fun at a genre's tropes.

There Were Multiple Botched Attempts to Make A ‘Gilligan’s Island’ Movie
Image
Considering that so many sitcom contemporaries of Gilligan’s Island — The Brady Bunch, Bewitched, Beverly Hillbillies, Get Smart, The Addams Family — were made into feature films, it’s kinda weird that the show’s exotic locales and inherent live-or-die stakes didn’t get the same treatment. As it turns out, it wasn’t for lack of trying.

There have been multiple attempts to bring Gilligan and pals to the big screen, but like the S.S. Minnow, every one of them crashed into the rocks. For example, when the show’s creator, Sherwood Schwartz, was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Hall of Fame in 2008, he announced that he and his son Lloyd had just inked a deal for a Gilligan’s Island feature film. The agreement “just happened in the last 48 hours,” Schwartz told TV Guide. “I can’t take this much excitement at my age.”

Maybe because the elder...

Why Did Klinger Stop Wearing Dresses on M*A*S*H?
Image
Jamie Farr's role as Corporal Klinger in M*A*S*H evolved from a bit character to a fan favorite over 11 seasons. Klinger's transition from cross-dressing to more traditional army attire happened slowly following Colonel Potter's introduction and Klinger's own eventual promotion to sergeant. The decision for Klinger to stop wearing dresses was a mix of character development and societal pressure, with actor Jamie Farr pushing for the change.

A landmark television series that set the tone for decades to come, M*A*S*H has maintained a rabid fanbase even decades after its release. This is thanks to a colorful cast that included the wisecracking surgeon Hawkeye Pierce, the strict head nurse Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan, and the eccentric corpsman Corporal Maxwell Klinger. Fans of the series grew up with many of these characters, seeing them evolve and face all sorts of challenges and triumphs.

Tony Lo Bianco, the Brooklyn actor who oozed criminal charm in the gritty 1970s New York City dramas The French Connection and The Seven-Ups, has died. He was 87.

Lo Bianco died Tuesday night of prostate cancer at his horse farm in Poolesville, Maryland, his wife, Alyse, told The Hollywood Reporter.

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From The Love Boat
Image
"The Love Boat" holds a fascinating place in pop culture history. While most of the shows with reruns playing in heavy rotation today were in some way groundbreaking upon their initial release, "The Love Boat" is a novelty the likes of which modern TV rarely – if ever – tries to emulate. An anthology-like rom-com set aboard a cruise ship, "The Love Boat" featured a revolving door of guest stars and little connective tissue to speak of aside from the cast playing the crew aboard the ship.

The deeply '70s series earned high ratings for much of its run, yet was considered pretty silly even at the time of its release. John J. O'Connor called it a "dreadful porridge of a conception" in The New York Times, while the Orlando Sentinel's Noel Holston said it needed "sharper writing, better casting, more original situations, an end to the indefatigable laugh track or,...

What Happened to Andy Dick?

So what can be said about Andy Dick that the paparazzi and nearly every Judge from West Virginia to Los Angeles hasn’t already said? He was once a rising star in the comedy world with lovably nerdy characters on hit TV series before his demons grabbed a hold of him and took him down an over 25 year path of endless headlines with his name often times preceding the word “arrested.” In those years, he has compiled more Mug Shots than Head Shots and went from Star on the Rise to Registered Sex Offender. Yeah, I don’t know how else to say this other than: Wtf Happened to Andy Dick?!

But as always we must begin at the beginning and the beginning began on his birthday, December 21, 1965 in Charleston, South Carolina. After graduating high school in the suburbs of Illinois, Andy would study at the famed Second City and...

“I Had An Angel In Christopher Nolan”: How Interstellar Saved Anne Hathaway’s Career
Image
Christopher Nolan's film Interstellar rescued Anne Hathaway's career by offering her a significant role. Despite online negativity affecting her casting opportunities, Nolan backed Hathaway for the role. Hathaway's career was at a tipping point, but Interstellar maintained her momentum with a dramatic role.

Anne Hathaway explains how Interstellar saved her career. Hathaway played opposite Matthew McConaughey in Christopher Nolan’s 2014 science-fiction adventure film. In Interstellar, Hathaway played Amelia Brand, one of the researchers involved in the film’s space exploration mission.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Hathaway explains how Interstellar helped her career. The actress explained that “a lot of people wouldn’t [her] roles because they were so concerned about how toxic [her] identity had become online.” Nolan did not care about this fact, and still cast her in Interstellar. The Fall Guy SXSW Review: Ryan Gosling Charming in Otherwise Subpar Action Comedy
Image
Plenty of classic TV shows have gotten the big-screen reboot treatment — among them Get Smart, 21 Jump Street, Baywatch, and, of course, Mission: Impossible. Bullet Train filmmaker and John Wick co-director David Leitch hopes to bring a new vision to the ‘80s series The Fall Guy with Ryan Gosling as its lead, but despite the best efforts of everyone involved, it ends up being just another underwhelming studio action flick.

In the film, Gosling plays a stuntman who gets pulled out of retirement to track down the missing star of his ex-girlfriend’s new film, only to be thrown into a complex web of conspiracies. With his background being in stunts, it’s understandable what Leitch likely saw in Drew Pearce and Glen A. Lawson’s script. Unfortunately, this potential is largely squandered on a middling entry to the genre.

The approach of the stunts is very different from the...

‘Love Lies Bleeding’ Breakout Katy O’Brian on Getting Intimate with Kristen Stewart, Joining the A24 Family, and What’s Next
Image
Katy O’Brian is about to be a big star — and for audiences who check out Rose Glass’ “Love Lies Bleeding,” in which the actress stars alongside Kristen Stewart in an audacious, sexy, unpredictable mash-up of body horror, crime thriller, and love story, that concept will prove to be literally true by the film’s wild end. But she’s not slipping into any Hollywood starlet habits just yet.

Case in point: O’Brian signed on to our Zoom interview a full five minutes early this week (practically unheard of!), and offered to spend our extra time “just chatting.” And O’Brian, whose pre-acting resumes includes everything from bodybuilding to a seven-year stint as a police officer in her native Indiana, is a very good conversationalist.

Before joining “Love Lies Bleeding,” which electrified its Sundance audience and seems destined to join the annals of A24’s boldest films, O’Brian spent time on the small screen,...

The Twilight Zone Used Some Brilliantly Cheap Special Effects To Set The World On Fire
Image
The "Twilight Zone" episode "The Midnight Sun" took place on an Earth that had fallen out of its orbit and was drifting very slowly closer and closer toward the sun. The episode was an exploration of humanity during its waning hours, as seen through the eyes of Norma (Lois Nettleton), a painter who tried desperately to hang on to water and stay cool as temperatures rose and rose. Norma's only recourse is to paint the fires she sees out the window and the burning, growing sun in the sky. Eventually, her neighbor breaks down and implores Norma to paint something cool and refreshing, like a waterfall. The episode ends with Norma being overwhelmed by the heat and her neighbor dying of heat stroke.

There is a twist, of course. Norma wakes up in bed, having dreamed the entire episode. It's revealed that the Earth is, in fact, drifting away from...

Image
Exclusive: Patrick Warburton will star in and produce The Unearthly, an indie blending elements of sci-fi, comedy and horror that will go into production in Connecticut early this year. Directing the pic for Centerboro Productions is Josh Sternfeld (Fortress: Sniper’s Eye).

Warburton plays Tank McCrary, an old school paranormal investigator in the style of Ed Warren and Peter James, who hosted over 20 live television specials in the ’90s before an incident ruined his career. Stubborn and egotistical, he likes to do things his way. He doesn’t trust technology, relying on his analog tape recorder, archaic Emf meter, and his own smarts in his ghost hunting. HBO and Max New Releases: November 2023
Image
It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.

Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The first is Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which chronicles the aging comedian’s life and career. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

According to The Times (U.K.), Hunnicutt passed away on Thursday, August 31, at a hospital in London. Born on February 6, 1943, in Fort Worth, Texas, Hunnicutt made her television debut in 1966 on the NBC sitcom Mister Roberts and went on to appear in several more TV series throughout the 1960s and 70s, including The Beverly Hillbillies, Get Smart, and Hey Landlord. She married British actor David Hemmings in 1968 and moved to the U.K, where she had roles in many British TV series, including The Golden Browl, Fall of Eagles, Thriller, and Return of the Saint. Gayle Hunnicutt, the Texas-born actor known for 1969’s “Marlowe” and her role as Vanessa Beaumont in “Dallas,” died on Aug. 31 in London, according to The Times of London. She was 80.

Born on Feb. 6, 1943, in Fort Worth, Texas, Hunnicutt made her television debut in 1966 on the NBC sitcom “Mister Roberts.” She guested on several series in the ’60s, including “The Beverly Hillbillies,” “Hey Landlord,” “Love on a Rooftop” and “Get Smart.”

Gayle Hunnicutt Dies: ‘Dallas’ Actress Who Made A Name For Herself In British Film And TV Was 80
Image
Gayle Hunnicutt, whose best-known work came as Vanessa Beaumont, the mother of J.R. Ewing’s illegitimate son, in the final three seasons of Dallas, has died per multiple U.K. reports. Hunnicutt died last Thursday at a hospital in London, according to her ex-husband Simon Jenkins. She was 80 years old.

That Hunnicutt would find fame playing Vanessa Beaumont, a Brit, on a TV show called Dallas was a bit ironic for a woman born in Fort Worth. But it was entirely sensible given that the actress spent much of her career in British TV and movies, even marrying the be-knighted Jenkins before returning to work in the U.S.

Her TV career began with a role on the shortlived small-screen adaptation of Mister Roberts and included roles on The Beverly Hillbillies, Get Smart and in Marlowe opposite James Garner.

In 1970, Hunnicutt met and later married David Hemmings, who himself...

From ‘Only Murders in the Building’ to ‘Ted Lasso,’ Emmy Voters Love Their Chosen Families
Image
To understand just how long the TV Academy has struggled to define “comedy series,” look no further than the first decade or so of the category’s life: Between 1952, when Red Skelton’s titular variety show claimed Emmy’s first-ever comedy prize, and 1964, when The Dick Van Dyke Show scored its second win, the category had no fewer than six name changes, ranging from the terse “best comedy show” to the rather unwieldy “outstanding program achievement in the field of comedy.”

And it only grew more complicated from there. Unlike in the drama series category, whose contenders have been consistently hourlong and usually serialized, comedy competitors also started to assume widely different formats: multicam sitcom (All in the Family, Friends); single-camera, half-hour dramedy (The Wonder Years, Sex and the City); single-camera mockumentary (The Office, Modern Family); and hourlong ensemble dramedy (Orange Is the New Black, Shameless), to name a few.

From Mission: Impossible To 24, This Spy Cliche Is Overused
Image
The spy genre has a series of tropes and cliches that enrich their stories and keep things interesting, sometimes deploying subversions of the classic formula. However, like with any genre of film, these tropes intended for a twist can become repetitive and predictable - especially when used too often within the same franchise.

Spy movies have carved out their own unique genre, through franchises like James Bond, Mission: Impossible, 24 and many more. The genre is centuries old, but reached its peak at the height of the Cold War, through shows and movies like The Man From Uncle, Get Smart, 007 and I Spy. These stories would follow a predictable formula - the heroes would prepare for a mission, get a series of gadgets and a nice car and go about their operation to bring down the bad guy. Understandably, spy projects that moved into the 21st century started to buck many of these tropes,...

Ray Richmond: Why are ‘The Bear,’ ‘Barry’ and ‘Atlanta’ entered and nominated at the Emmys as comedies? Well, it’s complicated
Image
Whenever people find out what I do for a living lately, it’s the first thing out of their mouth. And I never have a good answer for them.

“Why are shows like ‘The Bear,” “Barry” and “Atlanta” contending at the Emmys in comedy series?

It’s a perfectly good question that has no single accurate response. But it isn’t for lack of trying. It’s the same conundrum that I had when “The Bear” in particular was nominated for a bunch of Golden Globes last January. I’ve watched both seasons of the show closely over the past several weeks, checking to see if maybe there was just something I’d been missing. I found a couple of moments that were worth a modest chuckle – such as the time Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) had only a vague notion of what Ups was until reminded by Sydney (Ayo Edebiri). But in the main,...

What Happened to Mel Brooks?
Image
Imagine a time before 90 inch TV screens were sold at Walmart for $200 on Black Friday, a time when the family would gather around one rabbit eared black and white television to watch a show on one of the four channels they had available to them. Now imagine a world in the immediate aftermath of World War 2, when everyone needed a good laugh. In that time you may turned on your TV’s after enjoying your mother’s pot roast and carrot dinner to see young men such as Carl Reiner, Sid Caesar and Mel Brooks performing comedic routines that gave you truly guttural laughs. The premises seemed so simple, yet the genius that went into crafting these bits would soon shape the entire direction of comedy. These men would go on to become some of the most iconic figures in the history of entertainment. Sadly, as time does to us all,...

Sudeikis would follow Don Adams (“Get Smart”), Carroll O’Connor (“All in the Family”), and Michael J. Fox (“Family Ties”) as the fourth man to take this prize three times in a row.
