For almost a decade, Platinum Dunes was one of the most successful independent production companies in Hollywood. Beginning with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 2003, which made over $100 million on a sub-$10m budget, the studio seemed to have hit on a magical formula: make genre movies to a price, attached to classic horror titles.

Texas Chainsaw was therefore followed by a string of other remakes, all based on films from the 70s and 80s: 2005’s The Amityville Horror was followed by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning in 2006; The Hitcher, Friday The 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street were all released between 2007 and 2009.

In the financial crisis era, audiences, it seemed, loved gory escapism. But in 2010, something strange happened: Platinum Dunes co-founder Brad Fuller noticed that his phone had stopped ringing.

On Feb. 7, the new slasher movie Heart Eyes will make its debut in movie theaters. How well received the film will be remains to be seen, but Devon Sawa thinks the movie's titular killer could become just as iconic as other slasher film icons like Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger.

Heart Eyes tells the story of two co-workers on Valentine's Day who are mistaken for a couple, making them a target of a mysterious murderer. Mostly donning all-black clothing, the killer becomes very recognizable by wearing a mask that has glowing red hearts for eyes. Sawa is one of the stars of the movie, marking his latest horror role after his appearances in Final Destination, Idle Hands, and Chucky. While speaking with Screen Rant about the film, Sawa said that the Heart Eyes killer is "unique" enough to stand out in the genre, potentially becoming a new horror icon.

To mark the spookiest day of the year, Screen Gems (via Bloody Disgusting) has released the first red band teaser trailer for a new horror movie titled Heart Eyes, and it promises to deliver a bloody Valentine's Day massacre.

Directed by Josh Ruben, the premise focuses on a masked killer known as Heart Eyes who only targets couples.

“My love of horror is rivaled only by my love of romantic comedies," said Ruben in a recent interview. "I’m excited as hell to mount my most challenging genre bender to date: a brutal slasher in a nostalgic rom-com universe.”

2024 marks the 50th anniversary of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, making this year's unofficial fan holiday extra special. The franchise now includes a comic book series, two documentaries, three video games, and nine films, one of which was almost lost: Leatherface, a truly strange telling of the title character's origin story with its own unique continuity. Slated for a 2016 release, then temporarily shelved for unknown reasons, this bizarre prequel almost didn't see the light of day.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre setup is simple: the cannibalistic Sawyer clan devours witless trespassers. However, like its famous villain, it has changed faces many times. Tobe Hooper's 1986 sequel was as satirical as his 1974 original was realistic; 1990's Leatherface was pure horror, while 1996's The Next Generation resembled The Rocky Horror Picture Show in its cartoony exuberance. The 2003 and 2006 Platinum Dunes films were pitch-dark, while 2013's Texas Chainsaw 3D reframed the Sawyers as folk heroes.

Best known for playing Leatherface in the 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and its prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, Andrew Bryniarski has a screen acting career that stretches back more than thirty years, and his forty-plus non-Chainsaw credits include playing Butterfinger in Hudson Hawk, Wyatt Beaudry in Necessary Roughness, Chip in Batman Returns, Steve Lattimer in The Program, Zangief in Street Fighter, Knocko in Higher Learning, Patrick ‘Madman’ Kelly in Any Given Sunday, Joe the Boxer in Pearl Harbor, Halloran in Rollerball, and Count Dracula in Dracula’s Guest. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bay is in talks to direct "an acerbic fantasy series" entitled "Barbaric" for Netflix, which is based on the Vault Comics series of the same name.

"Barbaric" is due to star Sam Claflin (from "The Hunger Games" and most recently "Daisy Jones and the Six") and Patrick Stewart (Professor X and Captain Picard himself), with Sheldon Turner of "X-Men: First Class" and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning" acting as writer and executive producer of the series.

The director, known for his muscular and high-revving big-screen action franchises such as Bad Boys and Transformers, is in talks to direct Barbaric, an acerbic fantasy series based on the best-selling Vault Comics title.

Netflix has picked up the bold-faced series package, which it will develop with A+E Studios.

Sam Claflin and Patrick Stewart are attached to star in the series, which will be written and exec produced by Sheldon Turner, known for his feature credits such as Up in the Air and X-Men: First Class.

Joining the exec producing team are Jennifer Klein, Turner’s partner at 100% Productions, which has a first-look deal with A+E, as well as F.J. DeSanto and Damian Wassel of Vault Comics. We first learned of this film earlier this month. On June 10, Heart Eyes was announced to be in the works for Spyglass. The 2000s was an interesting time for cinema. Let’s face it: it was an interesting time in general. In the realm of horror, the beginning of the aughts saw an influx of remakes of J-Horror – some bad, some pretty decent. However, with the post-9/11 cultural climate heightening anxieties and desensitization to violence due to real-world events, another genre emerged, tapping into the darker side of human nature. First coined by David Edelstein in a 2006 article in New York magazine, “torture porn” took the roots of exploitation and splatter films of the 70s and 80s and reintroduced the mainstream audiences to a new level of explicit brutality. Films like Saw, Hostel, The Devil’s Rejects, and the New Extremity of French Horror were raw and unapologetic looks at human depravity. It was everywhere. I mean, there was a time when you couldn’t go more than a year without having a Saw film.

There are a lot of bad prequels. There are some good prequels, but a great prequel is a rare thing to come across. They’re like a rare animal, the unicorns of cinema. Some wonder if such a thing even exists, but when you do watch one, it’s really rather something.

George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga might just be one, a prequel which somehow manages to justify its existence and repeat the exhilarating sense of time and place as Mad Max: Fury Road. I’d be surprised if we saw another action film as handsomely made as Furiosa in 2024. Or 2025. Or 2026.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Platinum Dunes, the production company headed up by Michael Bay and Bradley Fuller, are teaming up with director Jonathan Liebesman – who they previously worked with on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and their 2014 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – to make a werewolf movie called Wolf Night. We had learned about an interesting horror project earlier this month titled Wolf Night, a werewolf movie set to be directed by Jonathan Liebesman. The film has been compared to both District 9 and The Purge… with werewolves… and Deadline brings us a big update this week.

The hot Platinum Dunes package has been picked up by Screen Gems, Deadline informs us, with Michael Bay and Brad Fuller producing Wolf Night for Platinum Dunes.

Will Honley and April Maguire wrote the screenplay for Wolf Night, but aside from the comparisons to the aforementioned movies, the plot is under wraps at this time.

Jonathan Liebesman’s directorial credits over the years also include Rings (2005), The Killing Room (2009), Wrath of the Titans (2012), and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014).

The folks at Platinum Dunes, the production company headed up by Michael Bay and Bradley Fuller, clearly love working with director Jonathan Liebesman. After working with Liebesman on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, they had him attached to direct their reboot of Friday the 13th for a while – and even though Liebesman wasn’t at the helm of that one by the time it went into production, they did work with him again, on their 2014 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Now, a decade later, Platinum Dunes and Jonathan Liebesman are re-teaming for a werewolf movie called Wolf Night.

Deadline wasn’t able to dig up much information on Wolf Night, but they did learn that the project is being described as “District 9 by way of The Purge“. Will Honley, whose writing credits include Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, wrote the screenplay with April Maguire.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Tobe Hooper’s horror classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and the Halloween masters over at Trick or Treat Studios are planning a massive celebration. In this Bloody Disgusting Exclusive, the company previews the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre masks and products they’ll be bringing to Halloween 2024!

For starters, previously revealed 1:6 scale action figures of Leatherface based on Tobe Hooper’s sequel, the 2003 remake, and Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III are coming this Halloween, and the figures are already up for pre-order on Trick or Treat’s website.

As of this writing, there are nine movies in the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" series, and sussing out their chronology is one of the more herculean tasks a horror fan may find themselves undertaking. Like the "Halloween" movies, the "Texas Chainsaw" flicks abide by a choose-your-own-adventure structure, with some movies following a definite timeline, and others merrily ignoring previous chapters. Confoundingly, several of them have almost identical titles. The only consistent element of "Texas Chainsaw" is that they are all horrifically violent and unbearably disturbing. But, y'know, in a good way.

The premise of the "Texas Chainsaw" movies is simple. Thanks to rampant American poverty, entire families have been forced to live off the grid in remote, rural parts of the country. One of these families, largely inbred and blissfully detached from conventional morality, has taken to kidnapping passersby, stripping them for meat, and using their skin and bones as construction materials.

Creating a storm of fear when it was first released in 1974, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has inspired endless sequels and prequels. While none ever quite lived up to the original, each film creates its own timeline and lore. This is while retaining the Ed Gein-inspired, chainsaw-wielding charcter of Leatherface. Two films in particular have attempted to construct his origin story. 2006's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning kicks off the 'Rebooted/Hewitt' timeline where Leatherface is Thomas Hewitt: a man whose mother died during childbirth and was cast into a dumpster where his foster mother found him, leading him to later be employed at a slaughterhouse. However, it's in the 'Revised Sawyer' timeline, specifically in 2017's Leatherface, where we get a more comprehensive backstory for the human-skin-clad killer.

When did the Texas Chainsaw movies get so muddled with so many timelines? It’s not a hard thing to do. People get lost in Texas and end up victims of Leatherface and his family. I’m not saying there shouldn’t be a story line or a variation on things from time to time, hell, that’s what made Freddy, Michael, and Jason so popular. You could have even done something like the legacy sequel for Halloween, at least the first one. Oh wait, you did, and it didn’t turn out well with characters that made terrible decisions and weren’t likeable in the first place? Oh yeah, I remember that one.

The new Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game from Gun Interactive and Sumo Nottingham was just released for play on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One on August 18th – and one month later, the developers have announced (via Bloody Disgusting and GameSpot) that new content will be available next month! For $16, players will be able to purchase the “Nicotero Leatherface” pack, which includes a new chainsaw with custom sounds, a new kill animation for all versions of Leatherface in the game, and a new skin for Leatherface that was designed by special effects legend Greg Nicotero.

It can seem like "superhero movie" is an automatic greenlight in Hollywood these days. Yet, the genre is still littered with unrealized projects.

One is "X-Men Origins: Magneto." True to its title, it would've chronicled the early years of the X-Men's arch-foe. If any Marvel villain could sustain an origin movie, it's Magneto, who has one of the boldest backstories in superhero comics. About nine months ago, we heard that Michael Bay and Brad Fuller are reviving their production company Platinum Dunes at Universal – and now Deadline reports that one of the movies we’ll be getting from the revived Platinum Dunes is the supernatural horror film Lure, with Corin Hardy (The Nun) directing.
