Dame Maggie Smith, known to Harry Potter fans as the stern yet beloved Professor Minerva McGonagall, passed away on September 27 at the age of 89. She had an extensive career on stage and screen spanning over seven decades, with two Oscars, five BAFTAs, four Emmys, and several other accolades to deck her mantelpiece. Be it the ever-snippy Violet Crawley in Downtown Abbey or the controversial Jean Brodie in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Smith has left an everlasting legacy in the world of cinema.
Professor McGonagall may not be the biggest role on her decorated resume, but it is the one that endeared her to kids, young adults, and even grown-ups who love fantasy. It also led to some iconic anecdotes, like the time a child asked her if she really could turn into a cat, and she heard herself say, "Just pull yourself together."

From an evil queen pondering “Mirror, mirror on the wall: Who is the fairest of them all?” to Three Weird Sisters chanting “Double, double toil and trouble! Fire burn, and cauldron bubble,” witchcraft has been something of a skeleton key across centuries of storytelling on screen and in print. As old as ghost stories themselves, witches are fabled beings — typically more human than creature, but sometimes vice versa — known for using magic to abuse and manipulate us mere mortals.
Some witches feed on children; see Roald Dahl‘s “The Witches” and its two film adaptations starring Anjelica Huston and Anne Hathaway respectively. Some witches just want to be loved; consider the appropriately-named “The Love Witch” or the middle chunk of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” Others crave beauty, youth, power, or something altogether more sinister; think the unending greed examined in Luca Guadagnino’s astounding re-imagining of Dario Argento’s “Suspiria.

J.K. Rowling might be the genius mastermind behind the ultra-famous Harry Potter books, but even one of the most brilliant minds in Hollywood missed a significant storyline that could have further enhanced the movie series.

One of the most notorious villains in the Wizarding World is making an unexpected return. Imelda Staunton is reprising her role as Dolores Umbridge in the "Harry Potter" universe. But it's not going to be in a new movie or even the upcoming TV series in the works for the Max streaming service. Instead, Staunton will be part of the new "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic" ride coming to Universal Orlando next year.
The news was announced via a new promotional video released by Universal, which includes choice bits of footage of Staunton filming her new scenes as the famed "Harry Potter" villain against a green screen. In the video, Assistant Director Anisha Vyas Burgos called Staunton "absolutely brilliant," with the actress returning to the universe for the first time since appearing in "The Deathly Hallows: Part 1" back in 2010. Burgos also added, "She got to take Umbridge to the extreme.

Spooky season is nearly here.
And Peacock, Universal’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform, has just unveiled its Halloween programming line-up, full of tricks and treats from the studio’s back catalog, as well as two new series (“Teacup” and “Hysteria!”) for some fresh scares.
In 2022 and ’23, there was at least one big Blumhouse movie that simultaneously debuted on Peacock — in ’22, it was David Gordon Green’s trilogy-capping “Halloween Ends” and last year, it was the video game adaptation “Five Nights at Freddy’s”. This year doesn’t have anything quite like that, but it’s still a powerful collection of titles for every viewer.
The Sept. 1 batch includes classics like “Bride of Frankenstein,” “It Came From Outer Space” and “Werewolf of London;” 1980s favorites like “Halloween III: Season of the Witch,” “The Funhouse” and “The Thing;” along with more modern hits like the original “Candyman,” Jordan Peele’s “Us” and several entries in the “Saw” franchise.

The Oscars’ history of some of the most famous franchises still makes no sense to many fans. Harry Potter never won a single Academy Award despite being a visual extravaganza spread over 8 films. Of the eight, six films were nominated for 12 categories, winning none. Meanwhile, even MCU managed to bag 4 Oscars out of its 27 nominations over the years.

Every time a popular franchise is revived, people tend to wonder if it was ever necessary. In the world of crime dramas, there's no source more popular than Agatha Christie's novels or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. No matter how many times these stories have been told, every producer and director wants to put their own spin on them.
Guy Ritchie tried his hand at Sherlock Holmes in 2009 and 2011, releasing two films, Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, starring Robert Downey Jr. Both movies got decent reviews and a lot of happy viewers, but that wasn't enough. Now Ritchie is back with another project and another Sherlock.
Who Will Be the New Sherlock Holmes?
While the world is still wondering who will be lucky enough to play James Bond, it's not the burning question we should be asking. After the success of Robert Downey Jr.

One thing that makes every TV show unique is the title. It should be catchy enough for viewers to remember and easy enough to roll off the tongue of fans in any conversation. The Big Bang Theory spinoff, Young Sheldon, hit the perfect spot, while also explaining to viewers what the show was about.
One of the newer TV shows in development on Amazon Prime Video, however, didn't weigh in the way that the show's title will be reminiscent of a completely different show. Young Sherlock, which could easily be called Young Sheldon's successor, is very likely to have some viewers confused.
What Will Young Sherlock Be About?

Amazon Prime Video has ordered a series based on Andy Lane’s “Young Sherlock Holmes” novels with Hero Fiennes Tiffin set for the lead role, Variety has learned.
Guy Ritchie is attached to direct and executive produce the eight-episode series. It will be a reunion for Ritchie and Tiffin, who recently worked together on the feature “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” It is also the latest Sherlock Holmes project for Ritchie, as he previously directed two films about the famous detective starring Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes, Jude Law as Dr. Watson, and Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler.
“In ‘Young Sherlock’ we’re going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they’ve never imagined before,” said Ritchie. “We’re going to crack open this enigmatic character, find out what makes him tick, and learn how he becomes the genius we all love.

Harry Potter is nothing short of a magical escape when we need a break from the tiring realities of the muggle world. Whether it is going on a trip to Hogsmeade with the Golden Trio or studying Transfiguration with Professor McGonagall, the books and films are made in such a way that makes it so easy for fans to teleport into them and live out their best lives at Hogwarts.
Harry Potter (2001 – 2011)
While Harry Potter has everything from floating candles to dementors, it does lack a very common thing – illness and disability. Throughout the franchise, we don’t get to see wizards suffering from disabilities or illnesses. Author J.K. Rowling once opened up about how she believes that while wizards can catch the common cold and break their bones, they can simply use magic to heal these muggle problems.

The Harry Potter franchise introduced an array of interesting characters, which continue to be fan favorites even now. However, the show was majorly carried by three main protagonists who went through thick and thick to tackle several obstacles before eventually defeating Lord Voldemort. With different adventures encapsulated in the franchise, Potterheads made sure to ship the characters with one another in the entire saga.

Guy Ritchie is back with The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Based on what is allegedly the first “Black Ops” mission it’s a variation on The Dirty Dozen and all the knock-offs that followed, right up to and including Inglourious Basterds.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare opens with a boat having just been boarded by several members of the German Navy. As they pour gasoline over the deck, they tell its occupants they have the choice of staying on board and burning to death, or jumping overboard and drowning. For some reason, however, they don’t seem very worried.
From there we jump back 25 days, to Churchill watching newsreel footage about Hitler’s U-boats keeping American troops from entering the war.

Outside of perhaps Steven Spielberg and Janusz Kamiński, there may be no director-cinematographer collaboration that’s more extensive in modern-day cinema than that of Wes Anderson and Robert Yeoman. Having shot all of his live-action features, along with his recent Oscar-winning The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, Yeoman is now taking a break for Anderson’s next feature The Phoenician Scheme.

Jessie Cave has shared her thoughts after Harry Potter co-star Miriam Margolyes divided opinions after saying adult fans of the Jk Rowling book saga-based films worried her.
Cave appeared at Dream it Con and was asked about Margolyes’ comments about fans, who are now adults, needing to outgrow the franchise.
“It’s such a shame that that happened,” she said. “You know how she is — she’s just a bit funny. And I think she didn’t mean for it to be taken like that, I hope.
She then added, “I really don’t like that she said that.”
Cave played the role of Lavender Brown in three films, starting with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in 2009 and followed by the last two films, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Margolyes caused uproar among Harry Potter fans when she appeared on a New Zealand show dissing adult fans of the fantasy saga.

While it may have been almost a decade and a half since the last film in the iconic Harry Potter franchise was released for the big screen, the legacy of the cinematic experiences as well as the literary excellence achieved by author J.K. Rowling will always be dearly remembered by the fans.
Even though many who grew up watching the movies or reading books may now be full-fledged adults, they still haven’t forgotten their experiences with these pieces of popular culture.

The first book in the Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" ("Sorcerer's Stone" here in the States) was first published in June of 1997. It was written by author J.K. Rowling, long before she had been driven mad by an infuriating streak of unabashed transphobia that she insists on adhering to. Thanks to years of bigoted screaming, Rowling's legacy has been wholly tainted, and it's hard to read her lighthearted children's fantasy books without thinking of her poisonous worldview. If one checks out the Harry Potter books from the library, however, one can still enjoy the adventures and complex Wizarding World of Harry Potter without giving Rowling another dime.
Before her mind snapped open in public, however, the Harry Potter books — and their subsequent movie adaptations — were widely beloved. The title character was an impoverished 11-year-old who was forced to live in a closet with his abusive aunt and uncle.

Fantastic Beasts filmmaker David Yates told Total Film that the Harry Potter spinoff feature franchise “is parked.”
That’s a very similar message to what he told us back at TIFF, however, that was in regards to his involvement with the overall Harry Potter franchise..
We’ve reached out to Warner Bros to get an update on whether the J.K. Rowling spinoff features are truly on ice; the author originally announcing on a pre-fan day for the film back in 2016 with producer David Heyman that the plan was for five Fantastic Beasts movies, set in five different cities.
Fantastic Beasts followed the adventures of writer Newt Scamander (who penned one of Harry Potter’s textbooks) in New York’s secret community of witches and wizards.

Following the news that acclaimed actor Michael Gambon died today at the age of 82, fans in Orlando gave him a tribute worthy of the man who played Professor Dumbledore in six of the eight “Harry Potter” films.
The fans gathered outside the Hogwarts Castle replica found in “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter–Hogsmeade” at Universal’s Islands of Adventure in Orlando, where they raised their wands during a moment of silence, which you can see in the video at the top of the page.
The tribute was a recreation of a scene from the end of the movie version of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” where the students and faculty of Hogwarts lift their magic wands and light them up after Dumbledore is killed.
This isn’t the first such tribute marking the death of a “Harry Potter” actor. Similar tributes...

At the news of “Harry Potter” alum Michael Gambon’s death, his castmates have taken to social media to memorialize his performance as Albus Dumbledore in six of the eight films adapted from J.K. Rowling’s book series.
The author wrote about her first memory of Gambon, which involved his performance in “King Lear” in 1982.
“If you’d told me then that brilliant actor would appear in anything I’d written, I’d have thought you were insane. Michael was a wonderful man in additional to being an outstanding actor,” Rowling wrote. “I absolutely loved working with him, not only on Potter but also The Casual Vacancy. My deepest condolences go to Michael’s family and everyone who loved him.”
I've just heard the awful news about Michael Gambon. The first time I ever laid eyes on him was in King Lear, in 1982, and if you'd told me then that...

When it comes to Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts franchise filmmaker David Yates returning to the Max TV series, he tells Deadline, “Never say never.”
Yates was at our TIFF studio talking up his new Netflix movie, Pain Hustlers, starring Chris Evans and Emily Blunt, which made its world premiere at the fest.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed that Max was making a Harry Potter TV series back in April at the streamer’s press day, one which would revisit the iconic books over the course of a decade-long series. When the series was made official earlier this spring, a search for a showrunner was underway in addition to a fresh-face cast. J.K. Rowling and longtime confederates Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts are exec producing. David Heyman, who developed the films, was in talks to do the same. Rowling’s Brontë Film and TV is producing with Warner Bros. Television.

The South Korean box office got a new chart topper with mystery drama “Sleep,” but the weekend was a sleepy affair.
“Sleep” earned $2.97 million over the weekend, according to Friday to Sunday data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). Over its full opening five days, it grossed $3.97 million.
The film, which had its world premiere in Cannes in May, is the tale of a newly-married couple whose relationship is challenged by the man’s nightly disturbances, in which he claims that someone else is inside him. “Sleep” is directed by Jason Yu and produced by Lewis Kim at Lewis Pictures.
The top-ranked new release meant that “Oppenheimer” slipped to second place after three weeks on top. “Oppenheimer” earned $1.09 million to expand its cumulative total in Korea to $24.0 million. That is now the tenth highest score of 2023.
