15 Actors Who Almost Starred In Game Of Thrones
Image
If you were a struggling actor in the U.K. in the early 2010s, odds are you probably auditioned for "Game of Thrones." Set in the epic world created by George R.R. Martin and considered one of the best fantasy shows of all time, the series showcased an expansive roster of widely beloved (and horribly loathsome) characters. That cast included all-time greats of British film and theater, like Sean Bean and Charles Dance, as well as future stars like Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington.

However, as with any popular show, many actors auditioned or were offered parts that never materialized, or perhaps not in the way they had anticipated. From future A-listers who HBO unbelievably rejected to big names the show wasn't able to convince to be a part of the pop culture phenomenon, these are 15 actors who were almost cast on "Game of Thrones," but thankfully, for the actors...

What’s Leaving Netflix in June 2025
Image
Picture Credits: Netflix, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Illumination

Welcome along to another look through all the big departures scheduled from Netflix in the United States. Below, you’ll find the most comprehensive guide to everything set to leave the streamer in the US, whether that’s the handful of Netflix Originals leaving, one of the Sony Pictures or Illumination first window movies, or the other licensed titles set to depart.

As always, if you’re wondering why any of the movies and series below are set to leave, the reason is pretty simple. Netflix essentially rents most of its library from other providers. Whether it’s major studios like Sony Pictures, Universal, or Warner Bros, Netflix will only hang onto some of their movies from anywhere from a month up to a few years. This even extends to Netflix Originals, where we’ve seen dozens depart in recent years, and...

One Of The Most Beloved Romance Movies Of The 21st Century Just Had An Incredible Box Office Run 20 Years After It Released
Image
A beloved 20-year-old romance movie just had a theatrical re-release, and it managed to become a box office hit for a second time. Theatrical re-releases are nothing new, and older films have historically been a way for studios to make money as audiences flock to the cinema to see some of their favorite movies a second, third, or even fourth time. However, the trend has been somewhat less consistent in recent decades with the rise of home video and eventually the advent of streaming.

Theatrical movies have been struggling across the board in the 2020s, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to score a hit. Though there are always major exceptions, the decline of movie theaters has been a topic of discussion within the industry, and a comprehensive solution doesn't seem to be coming any time soon. However, recent theatrical re-releases have been scoring big, and it could be that...

“I’m Afraid, Tom, You Just Aren’t It”: Tom Hardy Why He Wasn't Cast as Mr. Darcy in ‘Pride & Prejudice’
Image
Four years before Tom Hardy was boasting his lavish, long locks as Heathcliff in ITV's 2009 adaptation of Wuthering Heights, the period drama was showcasing one of its best global theatrical exports as Joe Wright's Pride & Prejudice dominated the box office and became one of the 2005's 25 highest-grossing movies internationally. Starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen as the iconic Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, Pride & Prejudice 2005 is perhaps the most famous of the modern adaptations, although, according to a rumor that has swirled for years, it almost looked entirely different.

According to the whispers among Jane Austen and period drama fans, Macfadyen's role as Mr Darcy was almost instead given to Tom Hardy, with the actor's career, although just getting started, already showing the signs of the major leading man that would soon arrive. However, in a recent interview with the Thin Blue Paw Foundation, the man...

‘Pride & Prejudice’s Return to Theaters Helps It Hit a New Milestone 20 Years Later
Image
Jane Austen adaptations are nothing new, and with 2025 being the 250th Anniversary of her birth, they have never been more relevant. Thankfully, the year also marks two decades since the theatrical debut of Joe Wright's Pride & Prejudice, sending the movie back into theaters and putting eyes back on Austen's timeless romance tale. Now, thanks to this re-release, Pride & Prejudice's box office haul has hit a brand-new milestone, 20 years on from its first. Officially, Pride & Prejudice has now surpassed the $130 million mark, split between a $42 million domestic total and $88 million in overseas markets.

Pride & Prejudice has surpassed this milestone thanks to a consistent performance in domestic theaters following its initial re-release opening weekend, in which it earned over $2.8 million and finished eighth in the top ten earners. On Monday, April 21, and Tuesday, April 22, Pride & Prejudice earned just shy of $1 million in total, taking...

Sinners not only sank its fangs into the weekend box office, but it surprisingly drew enough blood to even dethrone A Minecraft Movie. The Jason Momoa and Jack Black-led video game adaptation just missed out on repeating at No. 1 for the third weekend in a row, having made an estimated $41.3 million domestically. However, Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s vampire flick won the No. 1 spot with an even more impressive opening-weekend take of $45.6 million. Sinners went on to make an additional $15.4 million internationally en route to a worldwide total of $61 million against a $90 million production budget.

Fans and critics alike were bewitched by Coogler and Jordan’s must-see vampire film. Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen in Pride & Prejudice (2005)
Joe Wright Looks Back on Pride & Prejudice at 20, From Improvised Dialogue to Internet Fame
Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen in Pride & Prejudice (2005)
Twenty years after its release, Pride & Prejudice director Joe Wright is reflecting on the continued presence of his first feature film—a period romance that has found a renewed audience through social media and a theatrical rerelease. As Focus Features brings the 2005 adaptation back to theaters, Wright and the original creative team are revisiting the choices, performances, and artistic methods that gave the film its enduring character.

The film’s unexpected online popularity surprised Wright. “Strange,” “extraordinary,” and “very gratifying” were the words he used to describe seeing his work turned into memes, TikToks, and even iced onto cakes. One of the most widely quoted lines comes from Claudie Blakley’s Charlotte Lucas: “I’m 27 years old. I’ve no money and no prospects. I’m already a burden to my parents. And I’m frightened.” The scene was never in the script. Wright credits Emma Thompson, who...

On the heels of the 20th anniversary of Oscar-nominated Pride & Prejudice, helmer Joe Wright reflected on his Austenian adaptation’s second life in the internet era, calling it “strange” and “kind of extraordinary,” as well as ultimately “very nice, very gratifying.” Particularly, the filmmaker revealed that among the most-discussed and much-memed speeches in the period drama — delivered by Claudie Blakley’s Charlotte Lucas — was improvised by writer Emma Thompson.

Speaking with Mashable, he said, “Deborah Moggach wrote the screenplay and did an amazing, amazing job. And then we asked Emma Thompson to help with a little bit of the dialogue. And I went round to her house, very nervous, with my little briefcase and we walked up onto Hampstead Heath onto a hill. And she said, ‘Sit down, take out your notebook and take notes.’ So as she improvised scenes, I wrote them down. And that was one of...

‘Pride & Prejudice’ Director Joe Wright: Emma Thompson’s Brilliant Improvisation Birthed the Heartfelt ‘I’m 27 Years Old’ Speech
Image
Joe Wright’s 2005 Pride & Prejudice adaptation is a cinematic gem, weaving Jane Austen’s wit with visceral emotion. Among its standout moments is Charlotte Lucas’ raw, unforgettable speech to Elizabeth Bennet, where she defends her pragmatic engagement to the cringeworthy Mr. Collins with the searing line, cutting deep into a common woman’s heart.

The heartfelt line emphasizes that not everyone has the luxury of chasing romance or sticking to a list of criteria when choosing a life partner. It beautifully contrasts the characters of Charlotte and Elizabeth, showcasing their differing perspectives. Emma Thompson, the talented Oscar-winning writer and actress who enhanced the script, brought a unique flair to the dialogue, largely improvising those iconic moments that resonate so deeply..

‘Fire Island’ Director Andrew Ahn Teases Potential Sequel Is “In The Ether”
Image
With another summer just around the corner, another ferry to Fire Island could be on the horizon.

Director Andrew Ahn recently revealed there’s “always been conversation about doing a sequel” to his 2022 gay romantic-comedy, which is set at the titular LGBTQ getaway and is loosely inspired by Jane Austen‘s Pride & Prejudice.

“I don’t know if a real concrete idea has been formed yet, but there are things in the ether,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

Ahn noted that writer and star Joel Kim Booster “always jokes that it’s going to be like the Sex and the City reboot And Just Like That, where it’s 30 years later and they’re older and gayer. … We’ll see what happens.”

The movie stars Booster as Noah, who enjoys one final trip with his friends to Fire Island while trying to help his best friend Howie (Bowen Yang) hook...

“It wasn’t in the script”: Pride & Prejudice’s Swoon-Worthy Hand Flex Was a Total Fluke, Reveals Director Joe Wright
Image

This timeless tale explores themes of love, wit, and society’s restrictions, enchanting readers with iconic moments. ‘Pride & Prejudice’ Director Joe Wright Breaks Down That Viral Darcy Hand Flex: ‘Our Bodies Know Best’
Image
“Pride & Prejudice” director Joe Wright is finally revealing how that now-iconic hand flex came to be. The beloved 2005 Jane Austen adaptation stars Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen as Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. The yearning between the duo is captured most exquisitely by Darcy (Macfadyen) twitching his hand as though reaching toward Elizabeth during the second half of the film.

Wright told THR in honor of the film’s 20-year re-release that the scene was included to show how Darcy and Elizabeth’s “bodies” already realized their inevitable romance before either of them consciously did.

“The hand scene was really a kind of articulation for me of this idea that sometimes our bodies know best,” Wright said, “that our minds might be a little slow to catch up, and that both Darcy and Elizabeth’s bodies, their hands, their whole nervous system, is aware of the importance of that...

‘Pride & Prejudice’ 20th Anniversary: Director Looks Back on the Film’s “Intentional” Fashion Moments
Image
Pride & Prejudice, the 2005 classic starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfayden, followed Elizabeth Bennet (Knightley) and Mr. Darcy (Macfayden) as they worked through their pride and prejudice towards each other while simultaneously developing a true love connection.

Leaving the audience with angst, humor-filled moments and period piece fashion that has now become mainstream in the Bridgerton era, director Joe Wright shares with The Hollywood Reporter how he interwove the story’s themes into the movie adaptation.

“We were trying to give an authenticity to the costumes, a sense of how lived-in they were,” he says.

Ahead of its 20th anniversary and theatrical re-release, Wright looks back on bringing the historical looks to life by working with Barbie costume designer Jacqueline Durran, what that famous Darcy hand-flex scene actually meant and how Elizabeth’s feelings and fashion were interconnected in Pride & Prejudice.

Elizabeth’s style and attitude seem less colorful...

15 Best Actors Never Nominated For An Oscar
Image
The 2025 Academy Awards will live on as an exciting night for first-time nominees. The ceremony saw a handful of veteran actors getting nominated for the first time in their careers, including Demi Moore ("The Substance"), Guy Pearce ("The Brutalist"), and Isabella Rossellini ("Conclave"), and one actor got a big, shocking boost when first-time nominee Mikey Madison won Best Actress for "Anora." But for every new Oscar nominee that comes along each year, there's still a surprising number of talented performers who have yet to be honored by the Academy with even a single nomination.

Despite being recognized by the Golden Globes, BAFTAs (basically the British Oscars), Screen Actors Guild (SAG), and other distinguished institutions, certain artists just can't seem to get on the Academy's radar. A few famous names received honorary Oscars, despite never getting nominated, while the Academy has completely iced out others with some pretty controversial Oscar snubs.

Festival Favorites ‘The Python Hunt’ and ‘Omaha’ Pick Up More Wins at 2025 Miami Film Festival
Image
It’s always interesting to see which films are able to keep up their film festival momentum after buzzy premieres at early-in-the-year fests like Sundance and SXSW. Two to keep an eye on? Cole Webley’s Sundance premiere “Omaha” and Xander Robin’s SXSW crowdpleaser “The Python Hunt,” both of which just notched new wins over the weekend at the 2025 Miami Film Festival.

“The Python Hunt” picked up the Made in Mia Feature Film Award, sponsored by Panavision, which is designed to honor films “of any genre that prominently feature South Florida in their story, setting, and filming location, and best utilize South Florida’s story and theme for universal resonance.” Robin’s film, a documentary about snake-hunters in the Everglades, sure sounds like it fits the bill.

And Webley’s deep-feeling John Magaro-starring family drama, “Omaha,” earned the Jordan Ressler First Feature Award, created by the South Florida...

Box Office Round-Up: 'A Minecraft Movie' Beats 'King of Kings' to the Crown
Image
A Minecraft Movie continued to "Notch" out its utter dominance at the box office en route to repeating as the No. 1 film for the second weekend in a row. Jason Momoa and Jack Black's team-up in the adaptation of the immensely popular video game franchise faced off against several newcomers over the second weekend of April, but none of those movie titles put up any real threat of dethroning director Jared Hess' family-friendly fantasy adventure.

No. 1 A Minecraft Movie brought in an estimated $80.6 million to not only reign supreme over the weekend, but the Momoa and Black-led flick also continued its worldwide dominance by increasing its global total to $550.6 million. The film’s overwhelming financial success has helped Minecraft not only recoup its $150 million production budget and turn a profit for Warner Bros. Pictures, but it also aided the adventure in climbing the worldwide box office chart for video game adaptations.

Even the fiercest dragons can’t dodge a little criticism, especially when it’s coming from the man who created them! House of the Dragon season 2 was a hit with fans and critics, but George R.R. Martin wasn’t completely thrilled. In a now-deleted blog post, the Fire & Blood author shared his disappointment over certain creative choices, particularly the decision to exclude Maelor Targaryen, a character from the book.

While Martin’s words sparked debate among fans, showrunner Ryan Condal has now responded, explaining why Maelor didn’t make the cut. With the Dance of the Dragons already packed with political intrigue, betrayals, and fire-breathing chaos, was there simply no room for the young Targaryen prince? Or was there another reason behind the decision? As the world of Westeros expands, it...
