In its eight decades of existence as a medium, scripted television has been mediated by certain bedrock genres. There's the family-centric soap opera, the crime drama, the workplace sitcom ... and there is, of course, the medical show, which has proven in those decades to have virtually inexhaustible appeal for both comedy and drama.
With a good team of storytellers and a strong cast of actors in tow, the sky's the limit to what depths of feeling and engagement can be drawn from the experiences of medical professionals and their daily efforts to care and do no harm — and TV, with its structural affinity for individual "cases," may just be the ideal medium to mine those depths.
To prove it, we've compiled a ranking of the 15 greatest medical shows of all time. Because this is a universal genre pretty much wherever there are TV studios and networks, the list's only rule...

If you ever felt Hugh Laurie’s ingenious show, House M.D., was a medical term-heavy show, you might not be incorrect. Yet, the Fox show revolutionized the scope of medical drama with its lucid description of some of the most critical medical terms. One among them is ‘male pseudo hermaphroditism.’
House M.D., after premiering in 2004, revolved around the daily challenges of Dr. Gregory House (Laurie) along with his subordinates in an episodic manner. While the show followed a fairly simple pattern of a patient coming with a mysterious syndrome before being misdiagnosed by House and his “lackeys.” Later, at the end of the episodes, however, Dr. House, like a true genius, wrapped up the cases after finding the disease.
In one such instance in the second season, S2 Episode 13, titled ‘Skin Deep’, House and his associates traversed the bewildering territory of a medical anomaly. As their supermodel patient grappled with the struggle of gender identity,...

Friends—could you be any more iconic? From Central Perk coffee runs to “we were on a break” debates, this Manhattan gang made the world laugh for 10 seasons straight. With cameos like Brad Pitt, Susan Sarandon, and Julia Roberts, the show wasn’t just about laughs. It was a mirror to love, chaos, and questionable fashion.
Now, thanks to streaming, a new gen is bingeing it like it’s 1999. But with fresh eyes come fresh takes. Sure, the legacy is golden, but it’s hard to unsee those awkward storylines and blink-and-you-miss-it gems hidden between the jokes.
Friends still rules, but it’s fun to spot the flaws between the How you doin’s and Pivot!’s.

Let it never be said "House, M.D." let something as insignificant as facts get in the way of a brain-tickling mystery. For eight seasons, David Shore's Fox TV drama centered around the weekly cases of the titular, misanthropic, prodigious diagnostician and the team of doctors who spent almost as much time begging him to seek therapy for his assorted traumas as they did helping him diagnose his aggrieved patients. The show's actual medical accuracy ranged all over the place on a scale of remarkably correct to flaming garbage, but you know what? It had a damn effective formula, which provided a framework upon which the series' writers could hang all manner of soapy dramatics.
Although they would eventually escalate things to the level of having House drive his car into the home of his colleague turned ex-girlfriend Lisa Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein), the "House" writing staff started out simpler with a good old-fashioned will-they-or-won't-they.

We have a cause of death for former Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gossip Girl star Michelle Trachtenberg.
Following a review of laboratory test results, it was determined that Trachtenberg died naturally as a result of complications from diabetes mellitus, the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner told Deadline in a statement.
Trachtenberg was found unresponsive in her midtown Manhattan apartment February 26. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. No foul was suspected. She was 39.
The coroner’s office initially said her cause of death would remain undetermined because the family had requested that no autopsy be conducted because of religious reasons. The medical examiner’s office would automatically do an autopsy if foul play or criminality was suspected, but there was none, so the office did not overrule the family’s decision. Following the lab test results, the medical examiner’s office amended the cause of death.

Trying to be successful in any creative industry can be incredibly rewarding, but if the opportunities aren't coming in, it can also be deeply frustrating. At what point are you still holding on because you've put so much time and energy into a career that isn't providing results? It appears this dilemma has weighed on the mind of "Cobra Kai" actor Courtney Henggeler for some time now.
In a Substack post from the end of March, Henggeler officially announced that, after 20 years of being an actor, she's stepping away from the industry. "I called my agents and told them I was tapping out. I no longer wanted to be a cog in the wheel of the machine," Henggeler wrote. She went on to describe the longing that came with being patient in the hopes that one day she would reap the benefits hoisted over every actor's head:
"We survived off the crumbs.

Medical dramas like "M*A*S*H" and "The Pitt" make for incredibly compelling television. Whether cases are seemingly straightforward, and the doctors are just doing their best to treat their patients, or things are a bit more complicated, there's always an element of life-or-death danger and at least a bit of medical mystery. The hit Fox series "House, M.D." took the medical mystery idea a step further, following brilliant-but-troubled diagnostician Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) as he tries to figure out the cause of a different patient's medical maladies each week. Built like a police procedural but with doctors instead of cops, House was Sherlock Holmes with a stethoscope, and that led to some truly incredible plot twists over the show's eight seasons. There was one truly absurd reveal near the end of season 4, however, that absolutely took the cake.

Spoilers for "Yellowjackets" to follow.
Previously on "Yellowjackets," the girls went hunting once more — this time for Coach Ben Scott (Steven Krueger). Ben rescued Mari (Alexa Barajas) from a nasty fall into a pit and ultimately let her fly back to the hive. No good deed goes unpunished, though; the Yellowjackets still think that Ben burned their cabin down, trying and failing to kill them, back in Season 2 finale "Storytelling." Ben maintains he didn't burn the cabin, and his past action suggests he's being honest, but the Yellowjackets are not feeling trusting.
Most of the girls want some simple Frontier Justice. However, team captain Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) insists they need to have a trial. A two-thirds majority will decide Ben's fate, life or death.
Taissa (Jasmin Savoy Brown) is, of course, the prosecutor, since her adult self (Tawny Cypress) will go on to become a lawyer. Meanwhile, Misty (Samatha Hanratty) is the defense,...

Nowadays, Fox's "House M.D." almost feels like a relic of a different time in television history, in which a network show with over 20 episodes a year could still be essentially a prestige concoction, carried by smart, profound writing, heady themes, and ambitious character work, while still conforming enough to a cozy weekly formula to become a ratings hit -- one massive enough to cost Hugh Laurie his role in "Superman Returns," no less.
While some of the show's 177 episodes are so similar as to start blurring into each other in retrospect, many "House" episodes have stood the test of time as first-rate hours of television by any reasonable criteria -- installments in which Dr. Gregory House was not just one of the greatest detectives in TV history, but a catalyst for searching and creative storytelling that used medicine to reflect on the mysteries of the human soul.

We’re following her story, and as the protagonist — even a deeply flawed and somewhat tragic one — we’re inclined to sympathize with and root for her. She feels like an underdog, and we want her to persevere.
However, just because Amy feels like the hero in our story, does that mean the other characters are villains?
(Fox) Doc Calls For Us to Sympathize with Amy, and We Do
The series makes us sympathize with Amy. When we met her, she was cold and blunt and didn’t care about a filter. It was apparent that most people around her had grown tired of her brusque delivery and prickly personality.
But we’re used to a character like this.
Many of Amy’s traits as a medical professional aren’t new.

House MD remains one of the most captivating and compelling medical dramas of all time. The series that introduced the cynical Doctor Gregory House kept audiences engaged with intriguing medical mysteries and "puzzles" that House and his team had to solve before it was too late for the patient. But no matter their intelligence and medical knowledge, House and his team weren't always on time. Sometimes, patients die before the team reaches their diagnosis, and most of these deaths happen in the most heartbreaking scenes of the show.
While many of the patients' deaths in House MD were upsetting, there were a few other deaths from recurring and main characters that made more than one fan shed a tear. House MD knew how to create intricate interpersonal drama that didn't take away from the medical mysteries but still kept audiences engaged with the characters' lives.

Medical dramas are all the rage these days, as is evident by the recent premiere of the Noah Wyle hit The Pitt over on Max, and the continued success of Grey's Anatomy on ABC. Now Fox is looking to get in on the action with its latest, Doc, and so far, it appears as if the network has a smash hit on its hands, as the debut episode of the Barbie Kligman creation was the network's best series debut in five years.
Per Deadline, Doc delivered the best debut for a series on Fox since 9-1-1: Lone Star in 2020, with the first episode watched by 2.2 million people. That’s not what’s most impressive, however, as in its first 11 days, Doc saw a 609% increase over its live plus same-day audience to rake in 15.6 million cross-platform viewers. Quick Links "Lockdown" Steers Away From the Show’s Typical Format Other Characters Get a Turn in the Spotlight Lockdown Highlights Hugh Laurie’s Immense Talent
House MD burst onto screens back in 2004, and more than 20 years later, it's still regarded as one of the best medical dramas in history. This show wasn't afraid to think outside the box, and Gregory House was more than happy to push the audience's button. As such, House MD may not have the same longevity as shows like Grey's Anatomy or General Hospital, but its impact is astounding.
Typically, the show relied on a patient-of-the-week format, allowing the doctors to focus on one individual while juggling their personal lives and House's antics. Yet, one episode managed to surpass this format and offer fans something completely unique. Directed by Hugh Laurie himself, "Lockdown" showcases the importance of mixing things up every once in a while.

At the surface level, House MD is one of the best medical dramas in history. The Diagnostics Team at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital explores some of the world's unusual cases and strives to find the most suitable treatment. But with the likes of Hugh Laurie and Robert Sean Leonard in the main cast, it wouldn't be wrong to also consider this show to be a comedy.
House MD isn't afraid to blend the lines between comedy and tragedy and often sprinkles in a touch of black humor to keep the audience on their toes. Although the jokes are often distasteful and sometimes crass, they help to emphasize Gregory's sardonic sense of humor. Thus, without its funnier moments, House MD just wouldn't be as popular.
House and Wilson Create an Interesting Bet Season 7, Episode 19, "Last Temptation"
House's relationship with Wilson is incredibly complex, but "Last Temptation" showcases a lighter moment between the two men.

The following contains major spoilers from Doc Season 1, Episode 1, "If at First You Don't Succeed...," which debuted Tuesday, Jan. 7 on Fox.
The Fox series Doc is an example of how there are too many TV medical dramas. The show is well-cast, led by Molly Parker and fan-favorite Scott Wolf, but it doesn't offer anything that audiences haven't seen before. Like NBC's Brilliant Minds just a few months before it, Doc plays safely within the tropes and expectations of the medical genre to deliver something that's entertaining, but nowhere near as compelling as it wants to be.
The clumsily titled show focuses on Dr. Amy Larsen, a high-flying department head at the fictional Westside Hospital in Minneapolis. The hook is that a car accident wipes out eight years of Amy's memory, so that she's essentially stuck in 2016. But what's supposed to be an emotional touchpoint feels like another gimmick, and the strong performances of Parker,...

For all the blood, sweat, and manpower that ABC poured into finding a successor to "Lost" (a show that shaped the course of television in the early 21st century), I'd bet dollars to donuts the network never wagered it would take the shape of "Once Upon a Time."
Conceived by "Lost" alumni and "Tron: Legacy" writers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, "Once Upon a Time" casts "House, M.D." veteran Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan, a seemingly unremarkable bail bond agent who, just like any hero's journey protagonist worth their salt, discovers there's far more to her world (and destiny) than she ever realized. The show itself combines jigsaw puzzle-style storytelling with well-known fairy tale characters -- especially the Disneyfied versions, which was possible thanks to ABC being owned by the Mouse House -- to create a dense lore and elaborate mythos that rivals anything J.J. Abrams or Damon Lindelof could ever hope to dream of.

House took a bold risk midway through its run by dramatically reshuffling its core cast, and it paid off in ways few shows could manage. After three seasons of following Dr. Gregory House and his original diagnostic team, which included Dr. Foreman, Dr. Cameron, and Dr. Chase, the medical drama broke the mold of what was to be expected from hospital procedurals. House surprisingly dismantled his team and was tasked to hire new fellows the next season. Instead of hiring anyone like a normal person, Dr. House hired his new team over the course of several episodes with around 40 options. This shakeup not only breathed new life into the series but also introduced a colorful array of characters, including fan favorites like Dr. Taub, Dr. Kutner, and Thirteen.

Two decades after the debut of House M.D., creator David Shore is keeping the door open for a potential revival. Making that happen, however, would require certain conditions to be met.
Shore opened up about House in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. In the series finale, House (Hugh Laurie) faked his death and was last seen going on a motorcycle road trip with Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard), whose cancer diagnosis left him with a handful of months to live. Over 12 years after the final House episode aired, Shore was asked about what House is up to in 2024. However, he doesn't want to be specific, as he's still thinking about actually checking back in with House by pursuing a new story. Even if that never happens, Shore also appreciates how the ambiguity keeps the fans guessing.

Pipe-smoking, funny-hat-wearing detective Sherlock Holmes is the standard by which many beloved sleuths are compared to and understandably so. Created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Baker Street's most beloved resident has been in 56 short stories and 70 films that have adapted his adventures, with some of the best iterations being played by the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Benedict Cumberbatch and Wishbone the dog. But was there ever a real Sherlock Holmes to begin with?
Well, however improbable it may be that there was a detective that battled with hellish Baskerville hounds or mentally dueled an evil mastermind over a waterfall, Doyle's beloved detective was very much inspired by a real person. Born in 1837, Joseph Bell was a Scottish surgeon and lecturer at the University of Edinburgh who taught Doyle for a year during his medical studies and chose him as his outpatient clerk. Olivia Wilde has opened up about her time on House, reflecting on the impact of her character and the shocking backlash it received. Wilde, now a celebrated actor and director, got her breakout role as Alex Kelly on The O.C. but rose to stardom when she joined the hit medical drama during season 4, playing Dr. Remy "Thirteen" Hadley, a doctor with Huntington's disease. Although the show was a massive success, becoming the most-watched television show in the world in 2008, it seems that some storylines were not well-received by audiences.
In a recent interview with Variety, Wilde discussed how Thirteen's storyline stirred controversy because the character's bisexuality and interracial relationship storylines broke new ground for television at the time, which resulted in "insane death threats constantly coming into the studios" and extra security measures on set. The star also emphasized how far television has progressed in normalizing such stories.

Scrubs saw a lot of success, mainly because of its unusual format and witty punchlines. So even when Jd was dealing with the latest medical phenomenon to walk through the doors of Sacred Heart, his fantasies and bizarre inner monologues kept the jokes light and flowing. Ironically, even though it handles a lot more dramatic themes, fans also see House MD as a comedy, mainly because of its leading man.
Yet, Scrubs was not going to let this competition get in the way of its growth and decided to parody the hit medical drama in a very memorable way. Complete with a brand new Dr. Cox and a range of whacky medical cases, "My House" highlights just how smart and calculated Scrubs can be. As a result, the series beat House MD at its own game and became even more memorable for it.

It’s not like the show was actually on top of the list, with millions of people watching a sarcastic genius diagnose rare diseases with the emotional range of a pebble.

While revivals appear to be at the height of their popularity, there are some shows that already ended on a high, and would only be hurt by bringing the show back. One of the biggest struggles for any TV show comes with the question of when to end it. Dragging a great series too far can lead to a drop in quality, and ending too soon can leave the audience longing for more.
However, even if a show ends at the right time, there is a significant challenge that comes with how to end it. Audiences grow attached to the characters on the screen, so their favorite characters need to get a proper send-off. Whether the show ends on a happily ever after, or a satisfying big reveal, it needs to find the right balance. But when a show manages to deliver a near perfect ending, it's important to preserve the integrity,...

Shore's medical procedural following a genius, but unconventional doctor has remained in the zeitgeist despite the fact that it has been more than a decade since its finale. As a result, many have hoped for the return of Hugh Laurie's Dr. House, especially as the recent trend of revivals continues to extend several stories beyond their initial endings.

As medical dramas continue to become more and more popular across the US, there's one show that stands out from the rest. House uses many of the same tropes seen in other medical dramas. However, the off-beat nature of the Diagnostic Medicine team allows audiences to revel in an additional layer of tension. Alongside these gripping cases, House offers a wealth of romantic sub-plots, effectively blending the boundaries of business and pleasure.
Dr. Allison Cameron is one of the most integral characters in House, leading a wealth of dynamic arcs and storylines. Cameron is also well-recognized for her ever-frantic love life, ensuring that no matter how hard she tries, she can never catch a break. Yet, despite her success on the show, the actress Jennifer Morrison decided to hang up her lab coat in 2009, leaving fans wondering why she left at the peak of her career.

Procedural dramas have been filling our screens for what feels like millennia, and while the formula has remained quite the same, the shows have shifted tonally. While some find themselves with elements of comedy and lighthearted stories, others fall into pits of bleakness and despair. The latter is where a certain Fox program found itself.
Critically acclaimed House premiered almost 20 years ago during a time when most dramas around it had more levity. Dr. House (Hugh Laurie) was a cynic. He may have even coined the phrase "everybody lies." It was this cynicism and bleak outlook on life that had me quitting my recent attempt at a rewatch. I simply could not stand this perspective on life and, unfortunately for me, this has been the general tone of most shows currently on the air. Then, hope was rekindled with the premiere of the recent NBC medical drama, Brilliant Minds.

House was a medical procedural drama that followed Doctor Gregory House as he dealt with some of the most intriguing and complex medical mysteries. Gregory House was the Head of Diagnostic Medicine at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. House had many different doctors on his team throughout the eight seasons of House MD, with some doctors staying only for a short period, while others left and came back multiple times. Many fans strongly feel attached to House's original team, consisting of doctors Foreman, Cameron, and Chase. Others believe that the new doctors, Thirteen, Kutner, and Taub, were the best.
The medical mysteries in House MD required the doctors on House's team to go far and beyond what any regular doctor would do. Some of the doctors on House's team had a harder time dealing with the stress and pressure, as well as House's unique approach to medicine. Others thrived under House's guidance,...

As a result of a spectacular 8-season run that lasted from 2005 to 2012, House M.D. became one of the most iconic medical drama series ever produced. Led by the utterly talented Hugh Laurie, the series gripped its audiences with colorful characters, complex mysteries, and unconventional medical solutions.

While she is mostly known for her award-winning tenure in Once Upon A Time, the best Lana Parrilla movies and TV shows reveal an incredibly wide range that suits a whole host of genres. Born in New York in 1977, Lana Parrilla studied acting at LA's Beverly Hills Playhouse, following in the footsteps of her aunt, character actress Candice Azzara (who appeared in the likes of Caroline in the City and Who's the Boss?). Parrilla's career began in 1999 with movies like Very Mean Men and Spiders and the Upn sitcom Grown Ups.
However, while her earlier roles on the big screen didn't kick-start a prominent career in movies, she had a big break when it came to TV shows when she signed on to ABC's celebrated sitcom Spin City in 2000. From there she went on to appear in several short-lived shows, though despite having a run of less-than-stellar luck when it...

Few recent Oscar juggernauts have been quite as perplexing in their forward momentum as Edward Berger’s 2022 adaptation of “All Quiet on the Western Front.” A handsomely assembled but ultimately overproduced and hollow contribution to the increasingly thinning “War Is Bad” sect of cinema, it was more than a shock to see the film steamroll its way as the annual international film to break through in Hollywood that year, especially due to Berger’s undoubtedly competent but anonymously workmanlike approach at the helm. It makes complete sense, then, that Berger’s next gig—amid swirling rumors that he’ll be the next studio whipping boy for franchises like James Bond and the Bourne series—would be one more squarely positioned in the awards race, without that pesky obstacle of subtitles that Americans hate so fervently.
“Conclave” positions Berger rather comfortably at the Hollywood table, for while the film is, qualitatively speaking,...

House MD is a medical drama with a unique, sarcastic, and cynical main character: Doctor Gregory House. Most of the cases House worked on with his team featured complex and one-of-a-kind medical mysteries that only he could solve. Audiences knew that House could be cruel, insensitive, and sometimes even spiteful. This was part of the appeal that the character had as the anti-hero, and the show leaned into House's harsh personality to make some of the best episodes. Yet, while House's misanthropy was the reason many enjoyed the character, a few episodes of House MD went a little too far.
Some of the most controversial episodes of House MD follow storylines that feel dated or filled with misinformation in hindsight. Episodes like "Better Half" and "Skin Deep" would never work today. Other episodes of House are controversial simply because of the poor writing or their polarizing reception. Even a show...
