Two decades ago, one jilted heart found its way to Italy as part of the iconic, genre-redefining film “Under the Tuscan Sun.” Starring Diane Lane as Frances, a San Francisco writer who jets to Europe after realizing her soon-to-be ex-husband is cheating on her, the 2003 film cemented the early aughts’ obsession with starting over again. “Under the Tuscan Sun” was based on a real-life Frances, author Frances Mayes to be exact, whose memoir was adapted by late writer-director Audrey Wells for the big screen.
Frances, newly jilted and with the emotional support of her best friend Patti (Sandra Oh), escapes both midlife crises and bad American men by traveling across the globe for a luxury vacation. She falls in love with a Tuscan villa and opts to renovate it while bonding with locals, including the seductive Marcello (Raoul Bova).

This year marks 30 years since Bob Byington’s first feature, though it’s only during the last 15 of those — since SXSW midnight-movie breakout “Rso: Registered Sex Offender” — that the Austin-based director has enjoyed “indie darling” status. During that same stretch, the cultural discourse has changed a great deal, while Byington’s voice remains remarkably (if somewhat frustratingly) consistent, churning out self-deprecating feature-length sitcoms about flaccid man-babies. Those aren’t the kind of movies American festivals are looking for so much anymore, which could explain why his latest, “Lousy Carter,” wound up premiering abroad, at the Locarno Film Festival.
Locarno’s programmers typically gravitate toward austere, experimental and/or formally audacious works of cinema. “Lousy Carter” is none of these things, but neither is it lousy. That unfortunate moniker belongs to the film’s lead character, a lumpy failed animator turned tenured literature professor, who’s rendered all the more pathetic...

With its list of new releases for October 2022, Amazon Prime Video isn’t fully aboard the spooky season train but it is at least spooky adjacent.
The biggest release this month is Prime Video original series The Peripheral on Oct. 21. While not outright horror, it does sound more than a little unnerving. Based on a 2014 sci-fi novel by William Gibson, The Peripheral stars Chloë Grace Moretz as a woman in a near-future society who may have just discovered an alternate reality. Fittingly, Westworld‘s Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy serve as executive producers.
The other TV series of note in October is The Devil’s Hour on Oct. 28. This British thriller comes form Steven Moffat and tells the story of a woman who wakes up at 3:33 a.m. (the devil’s hour) each night to receive a disturbing vision.
October is home to a couple of Amazon movies of note as well.

After dropping the epic “Lord of the Rings” television series on Prime Video last month, it’s no surprise the streaming giant is taking it easy this October. They still have plenty of new shows and movies coming out, though none quite on the scale of their journey to Middle Earth.
That being said, they’re transitioning from the world of fantasy to science fiction with their new series “The Peripheral.” Touted as being from the creators of HBO’s “Westworld,” Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, the time-traveling series is based on author William Gibson’s bestselling sci-fi novel.
Per an official synopsis: “The Peripheral” centers on Flynne Fisher (Moretz), a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America. Flynne is smart, ambitious, and doomed. She has no future; until the future comes calling for her. “The Peripheral” is...

Set in a remote Sudanese village where religion and prophecy are valuable currencies, You Will Die at Twenty beautifully examines misguided notions of faith. After giving birth to her first baby, Sakina (Islam Mubarak) visits the local Sheikh for a formal blessing. Instead of hearing promising words about the child’s bright future, she receives a dire omen: the boy will die on his 20th birthday.
Shockwaves of gossip spread as the entire village mints this premonition as tragic inevitability. Sensing the coming stress of their cursed family situation, her weak husband decides to leave and work abroad, promising to send money back as if that were appropriate compensation to excuse his betrayal. Almost immediately, Sakina’s sense of loss doubles, pushing her into a state of prolonged mourning for someone who has not yet died. She realizes rather quickly that raising her son alone will mean enduring years of isolation and alienation.

This article contains spoilers for Supernatural season 15 episode 14 “Last Holiday.”
If you’re a fan of fantasy, you’ve probably heard of a wood nymph, or Dryad, before. Many of us will have first met them in C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia, where they appear as the female spirits of the trees, but their history goes back much further than that, to Greek mythology.
There are lots of nymphs in Greek mythology; they’re minor deities associated with different parts of nature. They look after everything from wells, lakes, and springs, to beaches, pastures, and cooling breezes. Water nymphs of various kinds were called Naiads, and nymphs associated with woods and trees were called Dryads, though any of them could be called simply Nymphs. Pretty much any type of tree could have a Dryad associated with it, but they were especially connected with oak trees. Oak trees were often...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details from tonight’s episode of The CW’s Supernatural.
Following a six-month hiatus brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, Supernatural returned to The CW tonight to begin wrapping up its 15th and final season.
Kicking off an upcoming run of seven episodes is “Last Holiday,” which sees hunters of the supernatural Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) plotting to kill a vengeful God (Rob Benedict), as their de facto brother Jack (Alexander Calvert) wrestles with the loss—and redemption—of his soul.
When the pipes in their bunker hideout start to malfunction, Sam and Dean head to its control center, hoping to reset the system with the push of a button. Unexpectedly, it reactivates Mrs. Butters (Meagan Fay), a wood nymph helper of the Men of Letters, who had been trapped in standby mode since 1958.
At first, the brothers enjoy the magical being’s presence.

Supernatural Season 15 Episode 14
The Final Countdown Begins. Supernatural is back, baby, and there are only seven episodes left until the end.
The previous episode of Supernatural aired all the way back on March 23, 2020. A little over six months later, the highly anticipated fifteenth season continues with “Last Holiday,” a mostly light hearted affair—and very nearly a bottle episode—that brings the boys out of quarantine and back into our lives.
We discussed the meaning of a “bottle episode” as evidenced so brilliantly in the episode “Baby,” a Season 11 highlight that cleverly told a story centered around the titular ‘67 Impala. A bottle episode restricts the number of actors, sets, and other production essentials in order to make a cheaper standalone piece. “Baby” was a bottle episode because it was set only in the Impala. “Last Holiday” primarily restricts our characters to the bunker, save...

After half a year of forced on-screen hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, “Supernatural” is wrapping up its 15-season run, beginning with a standalone episode entitled “Last Holiday” on Oct. 8.
“It’s like the last breath you take before you’re about to take your final sprint or something,” series star Jared Padalecki tells Variety. “Strangely, it’s a serendipitous welcome back to the final seven episodes because it’s sort of a chance to go, ‘All right, everybody take a deep breath, let’s laugh a little bit, let’s see the boys allow someone to give them some breaks.'”
The title of the episode may seem a bit ominous — as if it is implying that the holiday celebrations that the Winchester brothers, Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Padalecki), celebrate within are their last ones (not just the last ones the audience will celebrate with them). “I think...

Admittedly, there is very little about the 2020 fall schedule that feels "normal."
But, there are still a lot of things that should pique your interest.
Supernatural returns this week, and new shows arrive across the dial including Soulmates on AMC, nExt on Fox, and Devils on The CW. Find out what we know, below.
Saturday, October 3
9/8c Country at Heart (Hallmark)
Not all Hallmark movies hit the right note, but with this cast, we have hope for Country at Heart.
Jessy Schram and Niall Matter top this film about a struggling country singer who meets a Nashville songrwiter in need of inspiration.
The two of them combine their musical talent to write a song for the fall festival, and they're going to find they have a lot more in their future than singing a duet together!
Haven's Lucas Bryant also stars as a country star in need of a song.

The run of the final episodes of Supernatural is only a few weeks away from commencing, and the decade and an half saga of the Winchesters will be brought to a close. The first of these installments has now had a batch of images released to give us some idea of what we’re in for, and you can check them out below.
Titled “Last Holiday,” the episode sees Sam and Dean discover that the bunker has become home to a wood nymph and as usual, they must ascertain what’s going on and who’s behind it.
Halloween episodes are a staple for many TV shows, embracing the annual celebration of all things spooky. However, with Supernatural being a series where monsters, magic and darkness are everyday occurrences, it often skips acknowledging the holiday, with one of the few mentions being the powerful demon Samhain who lent his name to the pagan harvest festival,...

To mark Supernatural Day on Sunday, the 15th anniversary of the series premiere, The CW unveiled a brand new poster for the upcoming final few episodes of Supernatural season 15. The record-breaking show’s last season was supposed to have wrapped up in the spring, but it was pulled from the schedules when the pandemic halted production. In some ways, then, it’s like we’ve got a new mini-season to enjoy this fall before the Winchester brothers’ journey comes to an end. And this poster teases that we can expect some gloomy times ahead.
Seen down below, it features Sam (Jared Padalecki), Dean (Jensen Ackles), Castiel (Misha Collins) and Jack (Alexander Calvert) all wearing grim expressions as they stand surrounded by fog. And no wonder they’re looking so down in the dumps, given what their mission in these final episodes is: in order to save the world once again,...

Happy all the holidays! Supernatural returns on Oct. 8 (The CW, 8/7c) with a festive installment in which Dean, Sam and Jack celebrate everything from Halloween to Thanksgiving, as seen in these newly released photos.
It all begins when “Sam and Dean discover a wood nymph (guest star Meagan Fey) living in the bunker who is determined to protect her family, at any cost,” per the official synopsis. While that may sound ominous, co-showrunner Andrew Dabb says the episode, titled “Last Holiday,” is a “really funny” hour. (When you’ve got Dean in a nightgown, how can it not be?)

All eight Harry Potter movies, which had a brief run on HBO Max when the WarnerMedia streaming service launched in May, are moving to Peacock this fall.
The availability on NBCUniversal’s streaming outlet, which went live in April before a national expansion in July, was specified as a six-month run starting in October and lasting into 2021. The shift aligns the films’ streaming presence with a broader licensing deal for the films, encompassing NBCUniversal TV networks. NBCU’s Universal Studios theme parks also have a popular Potter-themed attraction.
“The Harry Potter franchise is beloved by people of all ages and represents the caliber of quality entertainment customers can expect to find on Peacock,” said Frances Manfredi, President, Content Acquisition and Strategy, Peacock. “We’ve built a world-class collection of iconic movies and shows, and we will continue to expand the film library with treasured titles from NBCUniversal and beyond that...

Christmas has long been billed as a time where peace and generosity rule. But in the TV business, time around the holiday is fast becoming quite competitive.
In a season when cable networks like Crown Media’s Hallmark Channel and Walt Disney’s Freeform try to lure fans of holiday movies and family fare, AMC Networks is stepping up the rivalry. AMC this year is expanding its “Best Christmas Ever” from its eponymous flagship cable outlet, to its other holdings, which include BBC America, We tv and IFC. In all, the networks will offer more than 700 hours of holiday programming, including exclusives such as “Elf,” “The Polar Express” and “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” The company is upping the Yuletide programming output by 100 hours.
“There are 30 advertisers on board,” says Kim Granito, senior vice president of integrated marketing, who expects six more to come on board over the course of the next few weeks.

Queen Latifah is set to star in a potential reboot of the TV series “The Equalizer” at CBS.

Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, starring singer Halle Bailey as Ariel, will be directed by Rob Marshall.
The Little Mermaid is coming back to theaters, this time in live-action form, as part of Disney’s deluge of live-action movie remakes of its iconic animated classics. Of course, the move is hardly the biggest surprise in the world, with the year 2019 alone yielding "A-list" releases of Dumbo, The Lion King, and Aladdin, and with Mulan set arrive in March 2020, and 101 Dalmatians prequel Cruella arriving in May 2021, giving its prolific corporate tentpole neighbors at Marvel a run for their money.
Halle Bailey will embrace life under the sea, and later on the surface, to star as Ariel. This is a major break for the singer/actress, who is part of the cast of Freeform’s Grown-ish and is one-half of the R&b act, Chloe X Halle.

An intimate chamber piece that tightly interlaces remembrances of food and family, Wayne Wang’s quietly sensitive “Coming Home Again” adapts Chang-rae Lee’s award-winning 1995 New Yorker essay, a personal piece on Lee’s caring for his terminally ill mother and cooking her Korean dishes. A filmmaker with a diverse slate that includes the likes of “The Joy Luck Club” and female-centric populist films like “Maid in Manhattan” and “Last Holiday,” Wang operates loosely in the vein of his 1995 film “Smoke” here: incisively observant and attentive to items, mining in objects emotional traces of those who touched them.
But as with his other work, he is also precise in culturally detailing a contemporary San Francisco-based Asian American immigrant family facing a major life crisis. Wang is no stranger to exploring the immigrant experience in America — in films such as “Chan Is Missing,” “The Princess of Nebraska” and “A Thousand Years of Good Prayers,...

Disney has found its Ariel for the Little Mermaid remake with Halle Bailey, a newcomer praised for her amazing singing voice.
Disney has found its Ariel, the beloved princess from under the sea, and it is most definitely an unexpected choice. Despite social media stans pushing hard for the casting of Zendaya, Disney and director Rob Marshall have selected relative newcomer Halle Bailey to play the mermaid who introduced Broadway style to Walt Disney Studios Animation.
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses the rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance—plus a glorious singing voice—all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” Marshall said in a statement. Indeed, it is Ariel’s otherworldly voice that becomes the very center of the film after Ursula, the octopi-sea witch, convinces her to sell her voice in exchange for a pair of legs.

From lady “Ghostbusters” to talk of a female James Bond, Hollywood has taken a shine to remaking classic movies or TV shows with gender-swapped leads as a way of mixing up a tried and true formula. But the trend dates back farther than to just the last few years. The latest example of this is “What Men Want” opening Friday, which swaps out Mel Gibson for Taraji P. Henson. But here are some other movies that looked to remake something old with not just a fresh face but from an entirely different point of view.

Actress Rebel Wilson is at the center of even more backlash over a comment she made claiming her new movie, “Isn’t It Romantic?,” is the first romantic-comedy film to star a plus-size woman in the lead role. The “Pitch Perfect” star made the remark on “Ellen” during a visit to the talk show on October 31, but Wilson was quickly called out on social media for forgetting about romantic-comedies starring actresses like Queen Latifah, Mo’nique, and Ricki Lake. Now Wilson is being accused of blocking on Twitter the black critics who spoke out against her.
Wilson originally reacted to the backlash by replying on Twitter, “Yeah, I of course know of these movies. But it was questionable as to whether: 1. Technically those actresses were plus size when filming those movies or 2. Technically those films are categorized/billed as a studio rom-com with a sole lead. So there’s a slight grey area.

Warner Bros. dropped the first trailer for its upcoming meta romantic-comedy “Isn’t It Romantic?” earlier this week. The movie stars “Pitch Perfect” breakout Rebel Wilson as a woman who hits her head and wakes up to find her life resembles a clichéd movie rom-com. Wilson appeared on “Ellen” to promote the trailer release, but she indirectly started an online controversy by claiming her movie is a Hollywood groundbreaker.
“I’m proud to be the first-ever plus-sized girl to be the star of a romantic comedy,” Wilson told Ellen DeGeneres.
Wilson was quickly met with backlash online for her comment, with many on social media reminding the Australian comedian of romantic-comedies starring Queen Latifah. Latifah starred opposite Common in the 2010 sports-driven rom-com “Just Wright,” and she played a woman who travels to Europe after being given a terminal medical diagnosis in the rom-rom “Last Holiday.” Wilson attempted to defend herself,...

Rebel Wilson, the first plus-sized female star of a rom-com? Fake news. The actress appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show recently to promote her new movie, Isn't It Romantic. She told Ellen DeGeneres, "I'm kind of proud to be the first-ever plus-sized girl to be the star of a romantic comedy." Twitter was quick to cite several examples proving otherwise. "Queen Latifah begs to differ," wrote user @kohkohbxtchzz. The star had appeared in the rom-coms Just Wright and Last Holiday. Last Holiday
Most folks are probably queueing up the shenanigans of a young Macauley Culkin or Peter Billingsley to watch with family over the break, but my preferred flick for the festivities is one that’s holiday-lite. Wayne Wang’s Last Holiday stars Queen Latifah as Georgia Byrd, a meek single woman who doesn’t really start living until she only has weeks to live. She promptly sells all she has, including stocks and bonds, and heads to the Czech Republic for the titular final voyage. Georgia goes all out, securing lodging at the ritziest hotel in Karlovy Vary so she can meet her idol, a chef played by Gérard Depardieu (forget about him for a sec). She takes every chance she can, whether it’s Base jumping or playing roulette. LL Cool J plays her crush who chases her to Europe to—guess what?—tell her she’s not...

Next month over on streaming giant Netflix offers up a giant selection of films of all stripes — modern to classic, animated to live action, Oscar contender to…not so much — and we’ve picked seven (well, really 11) that you should watch as soon as humanly possible, either for the first time or as part of a nostalgic little binge. Enjoy.
1. “Footloose” (available September 1)
If you’ve never experienced the original “Footloose” — no, not the one starring Miles Teller, though he is quite serviceable in a charming role — do yourself a favor and check out Herbert Ross’ 1984 classic. Yes, the concept of a town outlawing dancing is bizarre and outdated, but Ross and his cast (including Kevin Bacon in the kind of star-making role that’s so rare these days) really sell the concept, thanks to some serious drama and hard-earned emotion. But there is also dancing! It’s joyous and gymnastic and pure,...

How would you program this year's newest, most interesting films into double features with movies of the past you saw in 2015?Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2015—in theatres or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2015 to create a unique double feature. All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2015 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch...

Pop culture comes to life in St. Louis next month! It’s the Wizard World Comic Con May 22nd through the 24th at America’s Center downtown (701 Convention Plaza – St. Louis, Mo 63101), and boy oh boy, do they have an amazing line-up of guests!
Sure, you got the comic artists and cosplayers, wrestlers, a St. Louis Ram, a Power Ranger, and of course the ubiquitous Walking Dead stars, but what We Are Movie Geeks is most excited about are the celebrities from movies that will be on hand: Horror legend George Romero, Sharknado legend Tara Reid, horror hostess with the mostest (if you know what I mean) Elvira, Guardians Of The Galaxy tough guy Dave Bautista, Henry the serial killer himself Michael Rooker, Do The Right Thing’s ‘Buggin Out’ Giancarlo Esposito. Lord of the Rings Trilogy’s Pippin Billy Boyd, Captain America squeeze Hayley Atwell, and Silent Bob’s buddy Jay aka Jason Mewes.

HBO has released a new trailer for its Bessie Smith biopic, helmed by Pariah director Dee Rees. The film, which looks and sounds gorgeous, digs into Smith's beginnings in vaudeville and chronicles her ascension during jazz's golden age, as well as the increasing turmoil of her personal life. In an impeccable bit of casting, Queen Latifah takes on the role of the jazz icon. The Grammy-winning, Oscar-nominated singer-actress hasn’t had a role worthy of her prodigious allure in a while — too many people of a certain age remember her as the lady who taught Steve Martin how to talk nasty to women (who are represented by a statue). But don’t forget that this is the woman who made Last Holiday not only bearable, but borderline joyous. Smith recorded more than 160 songs for Columbia and worked with some of the most renowned jazz artists of the '20s and '30s,...

Sixty-four years ago today, one of Alec Guinness’ best films hit U.S. screens – Henry Cass’ darkly comedic Last Holiday. Guinness plays George Bird, a boring bachelor in a boring job who goes for a routine check-up and finds out he has a deadly and incurable disease. Upon his doctor’s advice he decides to clear out his savings and make the most of his final days, checking into a luxurious hotel. It is a choice that paints his remaining time with the most wicked irony. Having a moment to stop and live rather than work and worry, George earns all the fortune his life had been missing – friendship, love and professional success that he can’t act upon. Except, this is a wildly dark comedy with enough cruel life twists that make George’s experience anything but simple. Though its wickedness is irresistible, the film has been tragically forgotten, its...

In the past decade or so, Hollywood has chucked out a few so-called holiday films, like Last Holiday and This Christmas. And while those films may satisfy the holiday film appetite of some, I'm still a sucker for that old-school; those holiday films from a more simple time-- you know . . . the 70's, 80's, and 90's. You're probably saying, "That wasn't that long ago." But trust me when I tell you that they don't make them like they used to. Take the 1969 TV movie J.T. for example . . . The Robert M. Young-directed J.T. originally aired on CBS, and starred Ja’net Dubois, Helen Martin, and a young Kevin Hooks in the lead role as J.T. Gamble, "a shy, withdrawn...
