Trailer: Samuel L. Jackson and Pierce Brosnan head to Montana for revenge western The Unholy Trinity
Image
If there’s one guy I want to see in more westerns, it’s Samuel L. Jackson. Fortunately, he’s got a pretty solid-looking one lined up; even better, we have the first trailer for Unholy Trinity.

In the trailer, we’re immediately introduced to Jackson’s St. Christopher, who sits with Brandon Lessard’s Henry Broadway, who tells him he’s is headed to the town of Trinity to get revenge on those responsible for his father’s death. Once Broadway enters town limits, he meets Pierce Brosnan’s Sheriff Dove, who immediately recognizes the name and warns the boy to not tell anyone else about his ancestry. As it turns out, St. Christopher also knew Mr. Broadway quite well, having had a history of stealing gold with him.

As for a more detailed plot, it’s been reported that the movie takes place in 1870s Montana and “picks...

The Life of Chuck trailer: Mike Flanagan’s new Stephen King movie reaches theatres in June
Tom Hiddleston in The Life of Chuck (2024)
The upcoming film The Life of Chuck (which Neon will be giving a theatrical release on June 6th) is the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing series adaptations of The Dark Tower and Carrie for Amazon Studios) – but it is not a horror movie. JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray got to see the movie a while back (you can read his 7/10 review Here) and described it as a “bittersweet tearjerker.” A teaser trailer dropped online a month ago, now a full trailer has arrived and you can watch it in the embed above!

Based on the short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds, The Life of Chuck consists of three separate stories linked to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death...

Tom Hiddleston grooves in his universe in the new poster for The Life of Chuck
Image
The upcoming film The Life of Chuck (which Neon will be giving a theatrical release on June 6) is the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – but it is not a horror movie. Neon has released a new poster of The Life of Chuck, which evokes a mysterious, but beautiful journey into an introspection of life.

Based on the short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds, The Life of Chuck consists of three separate stories linked to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death from a brain tumor and ending with his childhood in a supposedly haunted house.

Tom Hiddleston (Loki) is playing Chuck, with Mark Hamill (Star Wars) playing a character named Albie.

Extended Cut of Terrence Malick’s To the Wonder Confirmed; Longer Song to Song Rumored
Image
Terrence Malick’s status as a moving target––more accurately, a target who rushes towards us while seen through a wide-angled lens––makes it easy to lose track of odds and ends. Thus I sometimes forget our report from August 2023, based on a pair of rather reliable sources, about a longer cut of To the Wonder, à la The Tree of Life or The New World, which would possibly integrate footage from Eugene Edwards’ adjacent docufiction Thy Kingdom Come. (A great film in its own right and essential companion you can rent here.) When we’d first heard of this in 2019 it was deemed a major time-consumer, and with workflow later derailed by Covid it became uncertain when (or if) this project saw the light of day.

But now a major update comes courtesy Keith Fraase, one of that film’s five credited editors, who told podcast Writers on Film,...

10 Amazing Fairy Tale Adaptations That Are Way Better Than the Disney Versions
Image
While certain Disney live-action remakes have been decent, or at least tolerable, others have been borderline disastrous. Thankfully, Disney is not the only company that has delved into fairy tale adaptations, as some other interpretations have been far more successful.

Whether these non-Disney efforts further empower classic characters, provide a new spin on familiar stories, or offer visual feasts, they are all absolutely worth a watch. Perhaps these ten films will serve as reminders that fairy tales can still be fresh and exciting.

Wendy Takes a Different Approach to Peter Pan 2020, Streaming on Hulu and Disney+ Image via Searchlight Pictures

Director Benh Zeitlin’s Wendy takes the tenth spot on this list because it is far from perfect but still delightfully unique and ambitious. The film focuses on the heroine, Wendy, and her friends, the “Lost Boys. ". Instead of fully transporting the children to Neverland, though, Zeitlin’s story keeps them painfully close to reality.

‘Train Dreams’ Review: A Landmark Homage to the Unsung Workers of the American West Plays Out Across Forests and Joel Edgerton’s Face
Image
With a handsome actor like Joel Edgerton, audiences typically find themselves looking at his face, or those ice-blue movie-star eyes. But in “Train Dreams,” I found myself looking at his hands, great big mitts, with thick fingers and knuckles like gnarled roots that don’t get that way on their own. Over the years, I’ve seen more movies than I can count in which pampered actors who’ve never lifted an ax or changed a tire in their lives try to convince us they’ve spent decades in the coal mines. Edgerton feels like the real deal.

In “Train Dreams,” the Australian actor channels the spirit of the men who tamed the American Cascades, chopping down trees and laying track. Somewhere between an elegy and an anthem, this gorgeous, almost-century-spanning film was directed by Clint Bentley, one half of the creative team responsible for “Sing Sing” and “Jockey”. The inspiration hails from a slender,...

The Eerie Movie That Turned One of America’s Worst Murder Sprees Into a Neo-Western Classic and Launched a Director’s Career
Image
Terrence Malick is one of the most enigmatic filmmakers of his generation, as he has become renowned for taking massive gaps in between his projects. Although Malick was assumed to have been retired after making just two films in the 1970s, he delivered a modern World War II classic with The Thin Red Line in 1999, and later crafted a lyrical version of America’s early history with the romantic drama The New World. Malick’s films are known for their striking visual, surrealist sensibilities, and formless narratives. However, Malick’s debut film was the true crime thriller Badlands, which had a production process nearly as unpredictable as the real events that it was based on.

Colin Farrell Doesn't Like One Of His Most Popular Crime Thrillers
Image
Michael Mann's big-screen iteration of his hit 1980s television series "Miami Vice" was up against it from the moment it was greenlit. The problem was right there in the title, and what it represented. When people who were old enough to have watched "Miami Vice" during its run from 1984 to 1990 recalled the show, they remembered a series that was Reagan-era style over substance. It was cool during a profoundly uncool era, a byproduct of empty MTV gloss bolstered by ultra-unhip music from Glenn Frey and Phil Collins. Star Don Johnson -- unshaven in a white sportcoat, rocking white Cole Haan kicks without socks -- was the epitome of the series.

The shimmering South Florida surfaces was one reason to watch, but anyone who paid actual attention to the plotlines knew going into Mann's film that the show was always about a rough, thankless, inherently deceitful job and the...

‘Hellbound’ Season 1 Recap: Everything to Remember for Season 2 of Netflix’s Supernatural K-Drama
Image
Netflix’s first season of “Hellbound” debuted three years ago and spilled a nightmare world onto screens from its very first scene. The dark supernatural K-Drama excavated faith, organized religion and the instant evaporation of societal niceties when our fundamental, existential beliefs are called into question.

“Hellbound” Season 1 saw the world turned upside down when unearthly beings start condemning people to hell, allowing new fanatics and schemers to rise to power under the guise of spiritual purity.

It’s been a long time since Season 1, and it was a dense six episodes, so if you need a refresher, here’s the “Hellbound” Season 1 recap you need to get prepped for Season 2.

“Hellbound” (Netflix) Angels, Demons, Decrees and Demonstrations

The central premise of “Hellbound” is that the world is turned upside down when inexplicable, brutally violent and seemingly divine deaths emerge in the public eye and the social contract dissolves as cults and new faiths rise.

Chat Pile ‘Cool World’ Review: Sludge Metal Reportage from a Society Beyond Repair
Image
With their second studio album, Cool World, Chat Pile continue to channel despair and dejection through grimy guitar riffs and brutally honest lyrics, recounting the subjugation of the lower classes by the well-fixed. Throughout, the Oklahoma City fourpiece warns of a population that allows itself to be exploited. On opener “I Am Dog Now,” singer Raygun Busch reminds us that “everyone bleeds,” a sentiment that’s echoed later on “Masc,” on which he begs, “Don’t tell your friends I trust and bleed.”

Musically and lyrically, Chat Pile aggressively argues for a fairer distribution of power, to tear down the systems that perpetuate cycles of victimization. These messages can feel a bit broad, as the band eschews specificity in favor of brute force, with screeds that are driven home by Busch’s gravelly vocals and Luther Manhole’s prodding guitar.

Chat Pile’s narratives resonate most when they’re more fully developed.

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best Drama Guest Actor
Image
For the first time since 2006, every current Best Drama Guest Actor Emmy nominee is new to the category. The seemingly unflappable leader of the pack is general first-timer Néstor Carbonell of “Shōgun,” whose expected victory could be one of 22 for the freshman series, the 1980 limited version of which took three out of a possible 12 TV academy prizes.

Carbonell’s strongest competitor is John Turturro (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”), who has an advantage in this race in that he won the corresponding comedy award for “Monk” two decades ago. Also in the running are former limited series supporting nominees Paul Dano (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) and Jonathan Pryce (“Slow Horses”) as well as Emmys newcomer Tracy Letts, whose “Winning Time” bid came as a surprise to most predictors.

In order to determine whether Carbonell truly has this contest sewn up, let’s take a closer look at each nominee. Be sure...

The 100 Best Movies of the 2000s
Image
This article is part of IndieWire’s 2000s Week celebration. Click here for a whole lot more.

Much like the decade that produced them, the movies of the 2000s were shaped in response to such profound and irrevocable change that it’s difficult to assign them a cohesive identity of their own; it can be tempting to think of them as a long suspension bridge between then and now rather than as a well-defined era unto itself. When the sun rose on the start of the new millennium, the vast majority of films were shot and projected on film, superhero movies were still considered an outlandish gamble, middle-class malaise was American cinema’s preoccupying crisis, and James Cameron was the biggest director on the planet. By the time the smoke cleared 10 years later, digital had pushed celluloid to the brink of extinction, Marvel was beginning to exert an iron grip on the multiplex,...

A Tribute to Emmanuel Lubezki: The Superstar Cameraman of Our Age
Image
The Humble Beginnings of a Master Emmanuel Lubezki is one of the most decorated cinematographers currently working, having garnered three back-to-back Academy Awards for Best Cinematography — an unprecedented feat and something of a victory lap for a man who had become highly sought after by the time the 2010s rolled around. Cinematographers often take the back seat compared to the directors they work alongside, but Lubezki has the privilege of both being a gifted cameraman and having collaborated with some of the finest filmmakers in or out of Hollywood: Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Terrence Malick, Tim Burton, the Coen Brothers, just to name a few. Lubezki started out, perhaps most consistently, as Cuarón’s go-to cinematographer, with their careers basically starting out conjoined at the hip; with Cuarón’s debut feature, ‘Sólo con tu pareja,’ in 1991, Lubezki was unleashed upon the world — only not quite. He would work with...

Zoro is Never Going to Achieve His Dream- Eiichiro Oda Reveals Mihawk is Way Stronger Than Shanks and Luffy
Image
Although Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece tells the story of Monkey D. Luffy, the Shonen series tends to focus extremely on the other characters of the show as well. This statement can be justified as the mangaka tends to give his attention to Roronoa Zoro, the swordsman of the Straw Hat Pirate Crew, a lot.

Roronoa Zoro. Credits: Toei Animation

He has been showcased as a talented swordsman with a cold attitude, matched perfectly with his undying loyalty towards his crewmates, especially his captain, and a goal to be the best swordsman in the world. Though he was a man of immense talent, another name stands between him and his dreams.

It is none other than Dracule Mihawk, the World’s Strongest Swordsman. Despite losing his initial face-off, fans are eagerly waiting for their rematch. However, The Pirate Hunter appears to have no chance of defeating The Apostle of Annihilation,...

Mike Flanagan is done with bleak, hopeless endings
Image
Filmmaker Mike Flanagan has written some dark, disturbing endings in his career… but we shouldn’t expect to see much of that from him in the future. During a recent interview with actress Katee Sackhoff for the Sackhoff Show podcast, Flanagan explained why he’s done with bleak, hopeless endings.

Flanagan told Sackhoff (with thanks to Cbr for the transcription), “A lot of the stuff I was writing had really bleak endings and very hopeless endings. It pivots right after [Hill House] and everything I’ve done since then doesn’t have that.” Sackhoff asked if that’s the influence of his wife Kate Siegel coming through, and Flanagan said, “I think in a lot of ways it is. And it’s because of family. When Kate and I got together, my outlook changed a lot. We had kids of our own and the kids started growing up and it...

The Life of Chuck: Karen Gillan says Mike Flanagan’s new Stephen King movie is a beautiful masterpiece
Image
The upcoming film The Life of Chuck is the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – but it is not a horror movie. We’ve previously heard cast member David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil) describe the film as a beautiful, heartfelt drama – and now Dastmalchian’s co-star Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy) has told Movieweb that The Life of Chuck is a beautiful masterpiece.

Based on the short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds, The Life of Chuck consists of three separate stories linked to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death from a brain tumor and ending with his childhood in a supposedly haunted house.

Gillan told Movieweb,...

Colin Farrell is a versatile Irish actor who has excelled in a variety of genres, from action films to dramas and from wild comedies to very very dark comedies.

And most recently, he has received acclaim for “The Banshees of Inisherin” with his first Oscar nomination and become a DC villain in “The Batman.”

Let’s raise a pint of Guinness for a toast and celebrate by counting down the 19 best screen performances of Farrell. Tour our photo gallery ranking his...

‘The Damned’ Review: An Immersive Civil War Drama That Whisks Us Into America’s Troubled Past
Image
Italian filmmaker Roberto Minervini’s artfully crafted movies, which include such works as Stop the Pounding Heart, The Other Side and What You Gonna Do When the World’s on Fire?, have always sat in a murky gray zone separating fiction from documentary.

Nonprofessional actors play themselves, or versions of themselves, in narratives that seem to have been crafted out of their own lives. And while the locations are always real places, with an emphasis on swaths of the American South — as his name suggests, Minervini is Italian, but he’s lived in the U.S. since 2000 — the director transforms them into sublime backdrops for his gritty tales of poverty and abandon.

His latest film, The Damned, is not technically a documentary: It’s set in 1862 at the height of the Civil War and follows a pack of Union soldiers treacherously exploring unmapped territories in the West. And yet, if...

Bella Ramsey to Play ‘The White Widow,’ Wife of British Terrorist, in ‘Girl Next Door,’ Celsius Launching in Cannes
Image
“The Last of Us” star Bella Ramsey will take on the role of one of the U.K.’s most mysterious and infamous modern day figures in “Girl Next Door” from writer/director Bruce Goodison (“Leave to Remain”).

The film — which Celsius Entertainment has acquired world sales rights to and will launch in Cannes — is set to tell the story of Samantha Lewthwaite, who became known as ‘The White Widow’ and one of the world’s most wanted women.

As per the plot details, “Girl Next Door” centres on Lewthwaite (Ramsey), who fell in love with Islam long before being Muslim was politicised and militarised and became known as ‘The White Widow’. What began as teenage curiosity about an “exotic” and welcoming faith as embodied by her neighbours and best friend, ended with Samantha being consumed by its more radical fringes. We follow Sam in the days following the 7/7 attacks...

Flanagan has let it be known that this isn’t horror, and cast member David Dastmalchian has said the same in a new interview with Gizmodo, describing the film and elements in it as beautiful and heartbreaking.

Dastmalchian, who was also in the recent King adaptation The Boogeyman, said (with thanks to Coming Soon for the transcription), “It’s beautiful. You think, ‘Oh, Mike Flanagan, Stephen King, this thing’s going to just be the most horrifying, terrifying, thing you’ve ever seen.’ [But] it is so beautifully rendered, heartfelt, the drama, the performances. The cast in this is deep.

New to Streaming: Dune: Part Two, Hundreds of Beavers, Problemista, Immaculate & More

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.

Asphalt City (Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire)

I entered Asphalt City at last year’s EnergaCAMERIMAGE festival with nothing but morbid curiosity. Having engendered some rank responses from its Cannes premiere and not secured any known U.S. distributor, Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s film had the right kind of bad-object energy one needs at the jetlagged start to their week in a small Polish city. (Or just the comfort I personally get from a Brooklyn-shot feature featuring two Club Random guests.) I walked away boasting complicated, fascinated enthusiasm: nearly every second is ridiculous and never boring, and it doesn’t not deserve to play at a cinematography festival––having the most cinematography counts for something. Starting and ending with a blatant homage to The New World...

Terrence Malik's 'The New World' Was Accurate, Except When It Wasn't
Image
While his filmography is rather limited considering the scope of his career, Terrence Malick is certainly one of the most influential directors of the past several decades. Often prioritizing dreamlike visuals over narrative cohesion, Malick is drawn to surrealist love stories that celebrate the natural world, and is generally able to convey extreme emotion through his visual sensibilities alone. Although Malick earned a major comeback in the late 1990s when his World War II epic The Thin Red Line marked his return to filmmaking, he solidified his status as one of the industry’s living legends with his gorgeous 2005 historical drama The New World. While it may be one of the most beautiful films ever made, The New World is almost entirely inaccurate in its depiction of Pocahontas and the origin of Jamestown.

However, the results of poll, particularly those titles that made the top 25 list, is now under fire for its inclusion of Berserk and Chainsaw Man.

On the r/anime forum on Reddit, a poll of the best horror anime series was created based on the input of 833 users. "A lot of people say that anime 'can't do horror,'" the infographic said. "It certainly doesn't very often, but there's still some great options out there. So, 833 r/anime users put forth up to 10 anime. Their #1 choice received 3 points, #2 and #3 each received 2 points, and the rest received 1 point."

April begins with the premiere of The Synanon Fix, a docuseries that follows the rise and fall of the cult-like drug rehabilitation program Synanon. An American Bombing: The Road to April 19th looks at the surge of political violence and anti-government sentiment that led to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, and the effects still felt nearly 30 years later. HBO is also returning with a second part to their popular docuseries The Jinx, with filmmakers continuing their investigation of Robert Durst.

‘American Fiction’ Takes Home USC Scripter Award
Image
The USC Libraries announced the winners for the 36th annual USC Libraries Scripter Award, which honors the year’s best film and television adaptations, as well as the works on which they are based. This group of academics, industry professionals, and critics (for which I vote) is often predictive of the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race.

For the second year in a row, “Slow Horses” took home the prize for episodic series; Cord Jefferson won the 2024 award for film adaptation; both he and the author of the novel he adapted, Percival Everett, were in attendance. Jefferson thanked Everett for trusting him with his 2001 novel, which he felt was written just for him. “He has managed to mine my novel for the material he needed to make this film,” said Everett, who teaches at USC. “And then I sat back and did nothing. So good job. Thank you.”

“I wouldn’t be here without without him,...

USC Scripter Awards: ‘American Fiction’ and ‘Slow Horses’ Take Top Honors
Gary Oldman and Jack Lowden in Slow Horses (2022)
The writers behind the feature American Fiction and the TV adaptation Slow Horses took home the top honors at the USC Scripter Awards, which honors the best adapted projects of the year. Both the original authors as well as the screenwriters share the award.

In the film category, American Fiction (Cord Jefferson’s adaptation of Percival Everett’s novel Erasure) topped fellow nominees Killers of the Flower Moon (Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of David Grann’s book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI); Oppenheimer (Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer); Origin (Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of Isabel Wilkerson’s book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents); and Poor Things (Tony McNamara’s adaptation of Aliasdair Gray’s novel of the same name).

On the TV side,...

“I hate them all”: Christian Bale Confessed He Hated Actors, Every Fan Would Agree Why
Image
No one does it quite like Christian Bale. There is no denying that he is one of the finest talents in the film industry right now and his name will surely be penned down in History books. Whether it is saving Gotham City as Batman or helping his brother reignite his boxing career in The Fighter, Christian Bale plays every role to utter perfection.

Christian Bale as Batman

However, despite being a movie star of his caliber, Christian Bale has moments when he absolutely despises the film industry. Sure, this is the career path he has chosen for himself, but that does not mean he can’t have his ups and downs! Even though he is killing it in the industry, Christian Bale once opened up about the love-hate relationship he has with his career.

USC Scripter Awards 2024 Nominations: ‘Origin’ Surprises Alongside ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Poor Things’
Image
The finalists for the 36th USC Libraries Script Awards, honoring the most accomplished films and episodic series adaptations, have been announced. Among the selected are “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things,” all top-tier contenders for Oscar attention. Ava DuVernay’s drama “Origin” was a surprise entry in the lineup, making her the second Black woman recognized by the awards body (the first was Dee Rees for 2017’s “Mudbound”).

A strong bellwether for the Oscars’ best adapted screenplay category, previous Scripter winners that have matched the Academy in the last decade include “12 Years a Slave” (2013), “The Imitation Game” (2014), “The Big Short” (2015), “Moonlight” (2016), “Call Me by Your Name” (2017), “Nomadland” (2020) and “Women Talking” (2022). Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” (2019) is the only Scripter-eligible film to win the Academy Award without being nominated by the organization.

One of the notable omissions from the group is Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” but according to the awards team,...

USC Scripter Finalists Often Tip Adapted Screenplay Oscar Contenders — Full List

This group of academics, industry professionals, and critics (for which I vote) is often predictive of the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race.

Last year, screenwriter Sarah Polley and novelist Miriam Toews won the film award for “Women Talking,” which was nominated for Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay Oscars; Polley won for Adapted at the Academy Awards. Meanwhile, the television prize last year went to English stand-up comedian and screenwriter Will Smith for the episode “Failure’s Contagious,” from “Slow Horses,” based on the novel by Mick Herron. Past winners include “Call Me By Your Name,” “Moonlight,” “The Big Short,” and “The Imitation Game,” which all won Oscars. In fact, before 2019, eight Scripter Award winners went on to win Oscars.
