‘Wicked’ Cast and Character Guide
Image
The highly anticipated “Wicked” movie is here, and is finally streaming on Peacock. After a tear-filled press tour and glitzy awards season, Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba and Ariana Grande’s Glinda took audiences by storm last fall and is destined to do the same on streaming.

The two leading ladies have become true sisters in the rollout of the film, even revealing several matching tattoos together. While the duo seem picture perfect for the musical adaptation, a list of stars admitted to being in the running for the powerhouses, including Dove Cameron, Renee Rapp and Amanda Seyfried for Glinda.

Jon M. Chu’s adaptation is chalked full of musical theatre trained actors, here’s your guide to the “Wicked” cast.

Do Directors Get a Best Picture Bump at the Box Office for Their Next Movie? Yes and No
Image
Turns out, when you’ve won Best Picture, most of the time, the only place you can go after that high is down.

Opening this weekend at the box office is “Mickey 17,” the first film from director Bong Joon Ho since his film won Best Picture for “Parasite” back in 2019. “Parasite” was something of a unicorn, an international film that crossed all borders and became a $259 million global commercial hit and an awards circuit sensation. Even with Robert Pattinson helping his cause, that’s going to be a tough benchmark to surpass. Warner Bros. is projecting a $40-50 million global opening weekend.

The difference this time is director Bong is working with a major studio, Warner Bros., rather than indie distributor Neon, and “Mickey 17” will open wide on 3,400 screens domestically, whereas “Parasite” at its peak only hit 2,000.

But when a director’s movie wins Best Picture, does their next one perform better?...

Batman at the Oscars | Its wins, nominations and ‘snubs’
Image
Academy voters had no love for Joker: Folie à Deux, but Batman leads the pack when it comes to comic book movies at the Oscars.

Many months ago, Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux seemed a likely Oscar contender at this weekend’s Academy Awards ceremony. Breaking the Batman mould, the 2018 original remains the most-nominated comic book movie to date with 11 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director, and a Best Actor win for Joaquin Phoenix.

With the addition of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, the meta-fictional musical sequel came with more awards hype. This evaporated on contact with the movie’s lacklustre opening weekend, not to mention the disappointed reception from critics and fans.

(Full disclosure – I am blissfully ignorant of Phillips’ Joker movies, so won’t comment on either of them. Wherever you stand on them, it should suit everyone just fine if the worst movie that gets made...

‘The Substance,’ ‘Wicked,’ and ‘The Last Showgirl’ Win at the 2025 Muahs Awards
Image
“The Substance,” “Wicked.” and “The Last Showgirl” were the big winners at the 12th annual Muahs Guild Awards, held at The Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel. The Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists ceremony was also livestreamed on YouTube and Vimeo.

The Oscar-nominated “Wicked” and “The Substance” won two awards apiece: Jon M. Chu’s Oz musical took home period makeup and period hairstyling, while Coralie Fargeat’s body horror satire grabbed contemporary makeup and special makeup effects. Gia Coppola’s Vegas showgirl drama earned contemporary hairstyling.

It’s an Oscar race between “The Substance” and “Wicked, with the former as the favorite for its amazing prosthetics for Oscar-nominated Demi Moore as the mutated Gollum and Moore and Margaret Qualley as the hideous Monstro. Transformations usually win Oscars and this is the standout. The other three Oscar nominees are “A Different Man,” “Nosferatu,” and “Emilia Pérez.”

TV winners included “The Penguin,” “Palm Royale,...

Emmy-Winning Makeup Artist Todd McIntosh Held ‘the Beauty and the Monster’ Side by Side Throughout His Career
Image
Do not underestimate the power “Dark Shadows” holds over an entire generation.

In addition to paving the way for everything from Tim Burton’s career to NBC’s “Passions,” the long-running supernatural soap opera led to Todd McIntosh’s entire career in makeup — and even delayed his retirement.

”At the time I decided to retire, another version of ‘Dark Shadows’ was being floated around,” McIntosh told IndieWire. “They were shopping it around, and as far as I know, they still are. So I actually held off retiring a little bit because I wanted to do that.”

McIntosh eventually did retire, with just the ill-fated 2004 reboot pilot under his belt when it came to the ghostly doings of Barnabas, Angelique, and the Collins clan. But that doesn’t mean the two-time Emmy Award winner missed out on vampires entirely.

In addition to “Dracula: Dead and Loving It” and “Mockingbird Lane,” McIntosh...

Colin Farrell's Golden Globe win should silence the comic book genre haters
Image
It began with the spark of a candle in 1941 related to the Max Fleischer Superman cartoons. Wait, a comic book genre?! No one was certain what to think about pages coming to life. The comic book genre has been under siege during "Awards Season" since 1978 when Christopher Reeve made the world believe a man could fly.

Recently, a different Bat signal had been emblazoned across Hollywood's sky, and it is solid gold. Can we stop hating on this genre now?

It probably won't happen as long as people like Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Roland Emmerich, and David Cronenberg are helming Hollywood. They're so influential and vociferous against the comic book genre that it tends to make the award bureaus reconsider a person acting in spandex really isn't "acting." As if cosplay doesn't involve imagination.

And so, hate continues against any visual entertainment from comic books and graphic novels.

The Best Films Playing in New York and Los Angeles Repertory Theaters in January 2025
Image
Welp, it’s January. That special time of year where everyone is simultaneously recovering from the holidays and trying to kick off the new year by putting their best foot forward. TV shows that have been on break will soon return and mid-season premieres quickly follow thereafter, but for film, January is often looked at as slow period for new releases, with offerings like “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” Leigh Whannell’s “Wolf Man,” and Steven Soderbergh’s “Presence” being unveiled. Films that have had awards-qualifying runs like Mike Leigh’s “Hard Truths” and Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl” will also expand wider, boosting their profiles in time for Oscar voting, but generally, there’s not much going on to excite the average movie-goer this month. So what better time to say, “Out with the new, in with the old!”

Repertory theaters in New York and Los Angeles have...

Gong Li's 15 Best Movies Ranked
Image
There have been some truly incredible movies with Gong Li over the years, as the Chinese-Singaporean actress is considered one of the best Chinese actors of all time. Starting her career while still in college, Gong Li was cast as the lead in the 1987 film, Red Sorghum, which was the directorial debut of legendary Chinese director, Zhang Yimou. After that, Gong Li frequently appeared in Yimou's films, working with the director eight different times.

Despite being one of the most popular actors in China, Gong Li was hesitant to act in any Hollywood productions, finally making her English-language debut with Memoirs of a Geisha in 2005. Just one year later, she was in the underrated Michael Mann film, Miami Vice, playing opposite Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. In 2020, she had a part in the live-action Disney remake of one of their best movies, Mulan. Even with her foray into Hollywood, Gong...

Coralie’s Fargeat’s “The Substance,” “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “The Deliverance” led the 12th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Award nominations.

The body horror of Fargeat’s “The Substance” resonated with the make-up and hair stylist guild with three nominations. Special effects artist Pierre Olivier Persin explained that Fargeat wanted to use practical effects, instead of digital CGI, where possible. 70-80% of what was seen in the film was practical, including the MonstroElisaSue creation which features at the end.

“Gladiator 2” and “Deadpool and Wolverine” each landed two nominations a piece. Other films that scored include “Shirley,” “Bob Marley: One Love” and “The Last Showgirl.”

Missing from the nominations were nods for “Maria,” “Nosferatu” and “Dune: Part II.”

In the television category, “Dancing With the Stars” landed five nominations across the hair and make-up categories.

‘Gladiator II’ Producers on Returning to Ancient Rome: “We Didn’t Want to Be a Pale Imitation”
Image
[This story contains spoilers from Gladiator II.]

In March 2001, Gladiator producer Douglas Wick accepted the Oscar for best picture from Michael Douglas, thus setting the highest possible bar for the, at that point, already discussed sequel to Ridley Scott’s historical epic. At the end of his speech, Wick paid tribute to his family by lovingly saying that “all roads lead to” them, and the metaphor proved to be true in more ways than one. His partner in life, Lucy Fisher, left her decorated career as a studio executive to become producing partners with Wick at Red Wagon Entertainment, and together they’d shepherd over a dozen more films, including Oscar winners Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) and The Great Gatsby (2013), as well as the under-appreciated gem known as Lawless (2012).

In between it all, they never lost sight of Gladiator II as various scripts were commissioned, such as Nick Cave’s wild take that resurrected Russell Crowe...

‘Music By John Williams’ Review: The Legendary Film Composer May Be The Goat And This Compelling Docu Confirms It – AFI Fest
Image
The AFI Fest opened Wednesday night back at its home, the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, and runs through Sunday, highlighted by world premieres of awaited new films from past American Film Institute Life Achievement Award honorees including Tom Hanks with his new film, Here, on Friday, and Clint Eastwood with his latest, Juror #2, on Sunday (among a host of prime Oscar contenders and international films). But the fest kicked off with yet another AFI honoree, legendary movie composer and musician John Williams, who is the subject of an exceptionally well-conceived and executed documentary on his remarkable career.

This is a legacy that includes more highlights and statistics and achievements than perhaps any other motion picture composer in history, although the shy and not self-laudatory musician would probably give you an argument on that, preferring to highlight those legends that preceded his glory decades that have run through the ‘50s all to way to now,...

Steven Spielberg Almost Directed One Of Spike Lee's Biggest Flops
Image
Will Smith and Steven Spielberg were on a similar wavelength in the 2000s. After he finished licking his wounds from 1999's "Wild Wild West," Big Willie was hungry to prove his mettle as a dramatic actor. Adapting a bit of a one-for-them-one-for-me mentality, Smith earned his first two acting Oscar nods for "Ali" and "The Pursuit of Happyness" in-between nodding his head as Agent J and tearing up the streets of Miami again as Mike Lowrey. Even his tentpoles started to get a little darker and heavier along the way, with the actor anchoring a big screen rendition of Richard Matheson's end-times sci-fi horror tale "I Am Legend" and playing a hard-edged, heavy-drinking superhero in "Hancock."

Spielberg, meanwhile, spent the first decade of the 21st century redefining his work. Really, there was very little he didn't try his hand at during this period, from crafting disquieting, noirish visions of...

2025 Oscar Predictions: Best Production Design
Image
As is the case with most below-the-line Oscar categories, bigger equals better when it comes to Best Production Design. The more lavish the sets, the more accurate the period detail, the more extravagant the designs, the more likely your film will win an Academy Award. Formerly known as Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, this prize goes to the production designer and set decorator, leaving the poor art directors on the outside looking in; perhaps that accounts for the title change. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Production Design.)

Like Best Costume Design, this award rarely corresponds with Best Picture. Before “The Shape of Water” prevailed in both categories in 2018, the last to line-up was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004. Often, the winner of this race hasn’t even been nominated for the top prize, as was the case with “Memoirs of a Geisha...

2025 Oscar Predictions: Best Costume Design
Image
If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2024 winner “Poor Things.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Costume Design.)

Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 Best Picture champs also won this award; the last to do so was “The Artist” in 2012.

Among the other double dippers was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004). Fantasy films such as this often boast Oscar-winning costumes, including 2022 champ “Cruella,...

10 Movies With A Way Higher Audience Score Than Critic Score On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
By now, it's rarely surprising to see critics and audiences respond vastly differently to films, as seen in the inconsistent scores on sites like Rotten Tomatoes. Though audiences are left scratching their heads most of the time at the considerably large amount of praise given to films thought to be mediocre, there are a few times when the roles have been reversed. Audiences have been quick to give a positive response to films that left critics feeling unsatisfied. None of the selected films have been flat-out panned by critics, but the few redeeming qualities still weren't enough to earn a fresh score.

There are numerous explanations as to why critics and audiences review and score films differently, but the most logical explanation comes down to the role of the viewer. When watching a film as a critic, factors within the film are expected to be graded, such as the strength...

‘The Room Next Door’ Wins Golden Lion at the 2024 Venice Film Festival — See All the Winners Here
Image
While last year’s strikes created a somewhat subdued energy on the Lido with very few talent able to be present, this year’s 2024 Venice Film Festival proved to hot and steamy. And we’re not just talking about the excessive heat movie stars and fan alike were subjected to. Films like Halina Reijn’s erotic thriller “Babygirl” and Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of William S. Burrough’s short novel “Queer” aroused audience interest with career-best performances from Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig and highly revealing sexual interplay. However it was Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Room Next Door” that took home the coveted Golden Lion, marking the first time the filmmaker has won a top prize at any major festival throughout his career.

Brady Corbet returned to the Palazzo del Cinema with his four-hour post-wwii epic “The Brutalist,” which screened to rave reception and earned the director the Silver Lion,...

‘Wicked’ looking good to pull off Oscar hat trick in design categories
Image
Universal’s movie adaptation of the hit musical “Wicked” is flying into theatres this year and brings with it a flurry of stars including Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jeff Goldblum, and Michelle Yeoh. But those stars aren’t the only ones who may shine bright in the film as the movie’s trailer displayed a dazzling array of designs that could mean it’s set for Oscar attention. In particular, it could be a key player for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Paul Tazewell is on costuming duty here. He was nominated for Best Costume Design in 2022 for another musical, “West Side Story.” Although he lost to Jenny Beavan for “Cruella,” musicals are often nominated in this category. Along with “West Side Story,” movie musicals such as “Cyrano,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “La La Land,” “Cinderella,” and “Into the Woods” have...

‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ and CarMax Reimagine Iconic “Day-o” Song for BeetleMax Short
Tim Burton
Ahead of the premiere of one of the year’s most anticipated films,Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, CarMax , and Warner Bros. Pictures are collaborating on a new campaign featuring the characters and imagery from the film. That includes a 90-second short film from CarMax that gives the classic “Day-o” song a BeetleMax twist, featuring the memorable Shrinkers.

Watch the short film below, but be prepared to have “Day-o” stuck in your head.

The partnership and short film drew inspiration from the fake commercial within the original film where Beetlejuice imitates a devious salesman offering free demon possession with every exorcism.

CarMax and Warner Bros. Pictures created their own quirky Model Town, enlisted the iconic Shrinkers, worked with Choreographer Litze Bixter, and received wardrobe consultation from Academy Award-winning Costume Designer Colleen Atwood.

The new campaign is described as “a playful approach to what car buying should not be – a sharp...

Axed James Bond Return Would Have Achieved What Only 2 Actors Have Managed Since 1962
Image
Michelle Yeoh was set to return to the James Bond franchise in Die Another Day - a rare feat for Bond girls. Yeoh turned down the cameo, maintaining the tradition of Bond girls rarely appearing in multiple movies. Her decision was likely the right choice, as a small role in the criticized Die Another Day may have hindered her career.

Michelle Yeoh very nearly returned to the James Bond franchise, and her comeback would have achieved a feat only two actors have managed across all James Bond movies. Michelle Yeoh joined the James Bond franchise as Wai Lin in 1997's Tomorrow Never Dies, and entering the pantheon of so-called "Bond girls" immediately propelled her to the international stage. Yeoh would later appear in classics like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Memoirs of a Geisha on her road to Oscars success for Everything Everywhere All At Once in 2023, but she almost...

How Columbia Pictures Kept Its Cool for a Century
Image
On a recent July afternoon, the ever-mercurial Tom Rothman arrives in good spirits for a tour of Columbia Pictures’ archives in honor of the studio’s 100th anniversary. “Ask a lot of questions, because after this, I must go back to work,” says Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman. “This is way more fun than getting yelled at by agents.”

Naturally, Rothman — one of Hollywood’s longest-running studio chiefs, who’s been in his current gig since 2015 and has overseen the most profitable period in Columbia’s recent history — starts off by noting the costumes from marquee franchise Spider-Man. By his calculation, the collection houses more than 30 superhero suits at the archive from various Spider-Man movies.

“I recognize this very well — it was worth $2 billion at the box office to us,” says Rothman, pointing to a suit worn by Tom Holland in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. Both that...

Peter Sherman, Avison Young principal and U.S. Capital Markets leader, said the site could be developed in a variety of ways, likely at a low density — with possible uses including a museum, a foundation, a private family compound or a resort. “Everybody’s familiar with the Japanese villa. But this site is not just the villa but the seven-plus acres,...

Zhang Ziyi Is Completely "Unrecognizable" in Her New True Crime Thriller
Image
Eight years ago, director Peter Chan (Warlords) began developing the story for She's Got No Name, a true crime thriller that recently celebrated its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival. He was trying to find his way into the real-life story of housewife Zhan-Zhou, the "husband killer," portrayed in the film by Zhang Ziyi (Memoirs of a Geisha), but over the years, Chan saw the period piece as a multilayered tale of self-discovery and resiliency, themes that mirrored the political state of Shanghai under Japanese occupation.

USC Film School’s Vice Dean Akira Mizuta Lippit On Reaction To ‘Oppenheimer’ In Japan & How Release Uncertainty Became Inseparable From Film’s Content; Then Box Office Surged – Guest Column
Image
Editor’s note: When Christopher Nolan’s eventual Best Picture Oscar winner Oppenheimer began its global rollout last summer, a question mark hung over whether it would ever see the inside of a cinema in Japan, given the sensitive subject matter. Ultimately, the film released there eight months later, swiftly becoming the top-grossing Hollywood title of the year and continuing to hold that position (now at $11.6M). Nine weeks in, it is still playing on more than half of the market’s Imax screens, and in local currency (¥1.774B) is Nolan’s fourth-highest-grossing picture ever there.

USC School of Cinematic Arts Vice Dean of Faculty Akira Mizuta Lippit has shared with Deadline his thoughts on the pre- and post-release reactions to the film in the market. Lippit — who is Japanese on his mother’s side and Jewish on his father’s — says the stakes of Oppenheimer and its reception couldn...

Image
In case you did not know, a Blade Runner series is in the works and has been shooting since April. Titled Blade Runner 2099, the series was revealed to be in the works in 2021, when Ridley Scott himself confirmed that a pilot and the series’ bible (a reference book for a series with relevant plot and character data) had been written. The series was officially announced in 2022 when the title was also revealed. Filming was set to begin in 2023 but was postponed to April 2024 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, which paralyzed the entertainment industry for a longer period of time. Now, knowing that the series is currently being filmed, we can also confirm that we have some exciting casting updates.

The Blade Runner franchise wasn’t a franchise initially. It started off as a standalone movie directed by Scott, which starred Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer in the main roles.
