An unusual and surprising episode.
What a surprise this episode of Maigret series where, at first, it is directed by the French cinema industry vet film maker Yves Allégret, and, second, Maigret begins this case with some action stuff for himself; and that's not foreseeable, if you already know the character. See for yourself, Maigret travels by a night train and suddenly he decides to follow a mysterious passenger in the corridor. Then the passenger jumps out of the train and, believe it or not, our lead superintendent follows him. Yes, folks, Maigret jumps out of the train. Of course, I guess Jean Richard was doubled by a stunt, but what a surprise. And after his fall he is fired at with a revolver. Magret is wounded and brought to the nearest hospital. That's where his investigation begins.
From this point, you'll find nothing really new here, the usual routine stuff. Some goof in this episode, and a big one. At one moment, one body is found, supposed to be killed by suicide. And at the end of the story, when we see the murder committed as a sort of flashback told by Maigret, the man supposed killed by suicide is actually murdered in the back from a distance !!! So, how can the police say this is a suicide, with a bullet hole in the back?
What a nonsense.
In the beginning And the music score is rather funny, totally out of the atmosphere, out of the good tempo where it should ordinary be for an accurate situation. For instance, at the beginning of the film, you see Maigret in the night train sleeping compartment, whilst he is lying, trying to get sleep, and the music score is very similar to the one you should have for an action scene.
Weird, but why not?
