Six of Cinema’s Super-Producers Offer Their Best Advice
Image
What is a producer’s job? On a fundamental level, it’s to put all the pieces together that allow for film and television to be made. Maybe it’s pairing the right material with the right director. Maybe it’s location scouting. Maybe it’s having 10 dinners with that one actor who won’t commit. The role of the producer is every-changing, but there are certain constants the best in the business have learned to adhere to.

Whether it’s Christine Vachon using Celine Song’s script for “Past Lives” as a selling point for the project or Ram Bergman advising Rian Johnson to make “Brick” on a smaller budget than he intended, the greatest producers in cinema today know that setting a project up for success means pinpointing its value. This isn’t just on a financial level, but in terms of popular culture as well. Keep reading...

‘Brick’ – Matthias Schweighöfer Stars in Netflix Original Thriller This Summer
Image
Netflix released their Summer 2025 movie lineup this morning, and while you won’t find any real horror on the list, there was one movie that at least caught our attention.

Matthias Schweighöfer (Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead) stars in the upcoming horror-thriller Brick, which will begin streaming exclusively on Netflix on July 10, 2025.

In the film, “Tim (Matthias Schweighöfer) and Olivia (Ruby O. Fee) awake trapped in their apartment behind an impenetrable, futuristic wall which has materialized overnight … and they are not alone. The entire building and its residents seem to be enclosed.

“What happened? Who built that wall and why? Without any chance of outside help, they must band together to find a way out. Can they solve the mystery of the wall in time — and survive?”

Philip Koch directed Netflix Original Brick, which also stars Frederick Lau, Salber Lee Williams, Murathan Muslu, Axel Werner, Sira-Anna Faal, and Alexander Beyer.

Adrien Brody
Two-Time Oscar Winner Adrien Brody Starred In The Most Underrated Rian Johnson Movie
Adrien Brody
Two-time Oscar winner Adrien Brody knows a thing (or two!) about serious dramatic acting. The actor became the youngest person to win the coveted Best Actor in a Leading Role award at the age of 29 for his part in "The Pianist" in 2003, and more recently he took the award home again for his role as László Tóth in Brady Corbet's impressive 2024 drama "The Brutalist." It might surprise fans to learn that Brody is actually quite good at lighter fare given his absolutely atrocious time hosting "Saturday Night Live," but in 2008 he starred in director Rian Johnson's most underrated film — "The Brothers Bloom."

"The Brothers Bloom" is a con-artist movie: a ridiculous caper with all kinds of meta-commentary on storytelling throughout, and Brody is the aching soul at the center of it that holds the wackiness together. Though many don't appreciate Johnson's second feature as much as his more serious debut,...

Ballistic May Not Dethrone Valorant or Counter-Strike 2 Yet, but Fortnite Already Has a Solid Start
Image
Fortnite‘s latest game mode, Ballistic, is Epic Games’ attempt to dethrone other popular PvP, round-based shooters like Counter-Strike 2 and Valorant. However, it’s still not good enough to take down industry giants. The first-person experience, combined with Call of Duty‘s Search and Destroy-like gameplay has attracted gamers all over the world.

Ballistic is a brand-new PvP experience made by Epic Games for Fortnite (Image via Epic Games)

Fortnite‘s Ballistic will take a long time to steal Valorant and CS2‘s fanbase but it still has a lot of potential. Fortnite is better known for its battle royale game mode and Ballistic is just part of Epic Games’ plan to make Fortnite a universal game that offers experiences of all video game genres.

Fortnite‘s latest game mode, Ballistic, is good but it is still far from taking down Valorant or Counter-Strike 2

Lego Fortnite Introduces Brick Life, A Standalone Social Life-Sim
Image
Lego Fortnite has announced a new standalone social sim mode called Brick Life, coming to the platform later this week. Lego Fortnite has already garnered a significant player base for its toyetic twist on the classic Fortnite formula, not to mention its major media tie-ins and custom Lego Fortnite modes. It's quickly become one of the more popular game modes available within the growing Fortnite platform; although it's still dwarfed by the now-ubiquitous Battle Royale, Lego survival mode has its hold on a different sector of the player base.

And the options for playing Lego Fortnite are about to grow again with its 32-player social sim roleplaying mode, Brick Life, announced today on Lego Fortnite's X (formerly Twitter) page for a December 12 release. Brick Life looks like a cross between GTA Online roleplaying and Lego City Undercover, with players exploring the sprawling metropolis of Brick Bay, built entirely out of the characteristic dimpled bricks.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Direct Anne Hathaway in AI Thriller
Image
Listen to this amazing list of names: Joseph Gordon-Levitt is set to direct Anne Hathaway in a new film for Rian Johnson's production company, based off an idea at least partially invented by Natasha Lyonne. Oh, and it's a thriller about Artificial Intelligence — because, truly, what's scarier (existentially speaking at least) than AI right now?

According to an exclusive report from Deadline, the as-yet-untitled film was co-written by Gordon-Levitt and Kieran Fitzgerald, who wrote the 2016 film Snowden. Gorden-Levitt, you may remember, played the titular whistleblower, Edward Snowden, in the Oliver Stone film. Fitzgerald also wrote and created the Peter Sarsgaard-starring miniseries Wormwood. Both share their 'story by' credit, however, with Poker Face star Natasha Lyonne, though there are no details in the reporting about how all of this came to be.

Anyone else wish they could have been a fly on the wall of the conversation that brought...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is set to direct a new AI thriller film that will see him reunite with one of his co-stars in The Dark Knight Rises.

Per Deadline, Gordon-Levitt will direct Anne Hathaway in a new AI thriller for Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman's T-Street Productions. Plot details and the official title are being kept under wraps. Gordon-Levitt wrote the script for the untitled thriller alongside Snowden screenwriter Kieran Fitzgerald. Gordon-Levitt also shares a "story by" credit with Poker Face star Natasha Lyonne. There is no official release window for the untitled feature at this time.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt to direct an untitled AI thriller for Rian Johnson’s production company with Anne Hathaway in the lead
Image
Artificial intelligence is one of the most controversial topics in the tech market today. Whether it leads to medical industry advancements, art generated from stolen assets, or accessibility for the differently-abled, AI continues to grow exponentially with no signs of stopping. John Connor warned us, but did we listen? No, we did not. Contrastly to the fear-mongering above, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is partnering with Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s T-Street Productions for an AI thriller starring Anne Hathaway. Gordon-Levitt directs the untitled project from a script he wrote with Kieran Fitzgerald, who co-wrote Oliver Stone’s 2016 biographical thriller Snowden.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Kieran Fitzgerald share a ‘story by’ credit with Natasha Lyonne, who stars as Charlie, the lie-detecting investigator, in Johnson’s Peacock series Poker Face. Gordon-Levitt and T-Street are well-acquainted after the studio produced Johnson’s 2005 crime thriller Brick, starring Gordon-Levitt as a teenager who pushes into a crime ring after his girlfriend disappears.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Directing AI Thriller For Rian Johnson’s T-Street; Anne Hathaway To Star
Image
Exclusive: Here’s a hot package coming together quickly: Joseph Gordon-Levitt is set to direct an untitled AI thriller for T-Street Productions, the production company of Rian Johnson & Ram Bergman, with Anne Hathaway to star, sources tell Deadline.

No word on plot details yet, but we hear Gordon-Levitt wrote the script with Kieran Fitzgerald, who previously co-wrote his 2016 Oliver Stone movie Snowden. Both share ‘story by’ credit with Natasha Lyonne, the star of Johnson’s hit human-lie-detector series Poker Face for Peacock.

The project is the latest in a long line of collaborations for Gordon-Levitt, Johnson, and T-Street. Gordon-Levitt’s friendship and creative partnership with Johnson dates back to the latter’s 2005 directorial debut Brick, a high school neo-noir starring Gordon-Levitt, which is now a cult classic. Subsequently, Gordon-Levitt went on to star as a younger version of Bruce Willis in Johnson’s sci-fi actioner Looper, later guest starring on Poker Face.

Rian Johnson
Every Rian Johnson Film Ranked Worst To Best
Rian Johnson
Rian Johnson has had a remarkable success story, as he went from being an “indie darling” to one of the most powerful studio filmmakers in the industry. Johnson first broke out when his independent directorial debut, “Brick,” made a splash at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005. By demonstrating his ability to craft an innovative story on a modest budget, Johnson earned opportunities to broaden his horizons and tackle even more ambitious projects. While he received even more praise for his extraordinary work directing two episodes of the critically acclaimed AMC drama show “Breaking Bad,” Johnson has turned his sights to more film projects for the foreseeable future.

Johnson was able to venture into the galaxy far, far away when he signed on to direct the second installment in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy, but recently, he’s been continuing a franchise that is entirely his own. “Knives Out” proved to be a smash hit,...

Killer Heat review – overcooked Jo Nesbø adaptation is deathly dull
Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley star in a very boring murder mystery streaming on Amazon

What might seem like a relatively easy ask on paper – the director of a buzzy festival hit adapting a Jo Nesbø short story with three likable and attractive actors set on the camera-ready island of Crete – has become a bizarrely effortful slog in the misshape of Killer Heat, a dull and predictable sunshine noir that wastes the time of those involved as well as ours.

Originally known as the far more appealing The Jealousy Man in print, the anonymously retitled mystery plays less like a real movie and more like a case-of-the-week episode of an ITV crime drama (without credits it’s not even 90 minutes long). Joseph Gordon-Levitt, revisiting similar yet considerably lesser territory to his role in Rian Johnson’s stylish 2005 thriller Brick, plays a run-of-the-mill private detective named Nick who is called to...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley are reuniting for the murder mystery thriller Killer Heat. Gordon-Levitt has proven to be one of the most versatile actors since breaking out as a childhood star with Angels in the Outfield and 3rd Rock from the Sun, having frequently collaborated with Rian Johnson going back to his directorial debut with Brick, while also finding acclaim in the dramedy world with the likes of 50/50 and his own directorial effort, Don Jon. Woodley similarly found acclaim in her teenage years before finding success in the YA genre with The Spectacular Now, The Fault in Our Stars and the Divergent franchise.

Gordon-Levitt leads Killer Heat as Nick Bali, a former New York City Police detective-turned-private eye who is hired by Woodley's Penelope Vardakis to investigate the mysterious death of her brother-in-law on a small Greek island. Partnering with a local detective,...

Knives Out Used a Genius Trick to Revitalize the Murder Mystery Genre
Image
The following contains brief reference to suicide.

At first glance, Knives Out seems like an average, classic murder mystery, perfectly fitting alongside the likes of Agatha Christie films like Murder on the Orient Express or the hilariously enigmatic Clue. But nothing could be further from the truth. Knives Out has revealed itself to be one of the most complex, exciting murder mysteries of the last decade. How could that be, seeing as this film comes from a fairly formulaic genre? Well, Knives Out managed to trick audiences into thinking that there was no mystery at all. The whole case was spelled out right in the first act. A murder mystery where audiences already knew whodunit, an extremely bold idea which elevates this film and the murder mystery genre today.

This expert storytelling can be attributed to the brilliant, creative minds behind the scenes, especially writer and director Rian Johnson. He...

10 Great Teen Movies That Are Surprisingly Dark
Image
When audiences think of teen movies, they usually picture either comedies, family-friendly Disney movies, or romcoms. However, there's also a surprisingly dark underbelly to teen movies as well; for example, hard-hitting dramas like the 2005 movie Brick, or the adaptation of Laurie Halse Anderson's novel Speak. As a genre, teen movies run the gamut of which topics they explore and the tone they use to tell the story.

For those who want comedy and darkness, there are plenty of great teen movies that are surprisingly grim, yet still light and entertaining. Dark teen movies, like Heathers or Drop Dead Gorgeous, are laced with macabre humor, cynical characters, and sinister crimes. These films are meant to be fun, and they fuse the best of what comedic teen movies and dramatic teen movies have to offer. Viewers can add these films to their fall watch lists when it's back-to-school and spooky season.

Warning: Spoilers for Absoluter Power: Task Force VII #1, Batman #150, and Absolute Power #1

Amanda Waller's plan to control superpowers is rooted in the desire for dominion, not elimination. Waller's naming of Amazo-bots indicates a desire for control over powerful individuals like the Justice League. Waller's shortsighted crusade to eliminate superpowers risks turning her "evil" super-team against her.

With the Justice League scattered, Superman and his allies have had their powers stolen by their evil Amazo counterparts. Amanda Wallers crusade against heroes is no new thing. With free will, variable morals, and abilities often beyond what governments are able to counter, superheroes are a rogue element but the way she has named her new Amazo robots reveals a dark truth about her role in the Dcu.

Zur-En-Arrh's Amazo-bots, made in the Justice League's image, are in Amanda Waller's hands. At her direction, one Amazo started with the Super-Family, absorbing their...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Continues to Play Coy About Possible Cameo in Knives Out 3
Image
Joseph Gordon-Levitt continues to skirt around questions about whether he will cameo in the third Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man. The actor previously appeared in Knives Out and Glass Onion, albeit in small voice-only roles.

While speaking with Collider to promote his latest movie Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Levitt was asked whether Knives Out filmmaker Rian Johnson had reached out to him yet about a possible cameo in Wake Up Dead Man, which began production last month. "This is Tbd. I don't know the answer, but if we continue our streak, I'll appear in some way, shape or form," Gordon-Levitt coyly offered. The actor's comment comes a few weeks after he previously addressed the topic, revealing at that time that he didn't know if he would appear in the Knives Out threequel. "I dont know. But he makes only good movies. Rian Johnson is one of the best alive,...

Rian Johnson's Looper Was Largely Influenced By An '80s Harrison Ford Thriller
Image
Rian Johnson's "Looper" is not your standard issue time travel flick. It's also a neo-noir crime yarn that veers into a man-on-the-lam thriller before unexpectedly integrating elements of telekinetic horror. It's a full 118-minute meal that more than satisfies on every subsequent viewing. And while you can easily rattle off its numerous movie influences, the film that most inspired Johnson's crafting of the narrative, particularly as it settles into its second act, is a quieter kind of genre tale.

Most moviegoers probably didn't anticipate what was sold as a Bruce Willis sci-fi action movie to head off in so many surprising directions, but Johnson has been infusing his films with all kinds of unexpected flavors since his critically acclaimed debut "Brick" –- and, frankly, even most cinephiles familiar with Johnson's oeuvre up to that point were caught off-guard by the younger version of the movie's protagonist (Joseph Gordon-Levitt...

Batman Declares Himself the "Gunmaker," a Brutal Self-Own Contradicting 85 Years of DC History
Image
Warning! Contains spoilers for Batman #150!

Batman admits to being a "gunmaker" due to creating destructive weapons like Failsafe. Batman's creation, Failsafe, has caused damage to the Bat-Family and the Justice League. Batman's history of creating dangerous weapons raises questions about his role as a hero.

Batman was born when a gun was fired in a dark alley decades ago. Now, despite his continued war on crime and his refusal to use guns, Batman has admitted that his true title has always been "the Gunmaker." Despite Batman's best attempts to make the world a better place, he has a long history of creating truly destructive weapons.

Batman's heartbreaking admission takes place in the Batman #150 backup story "Brick by Brick" by Chip Zdarsky and Mike Hawthorne. In this story, Batman admits that one of the first things he did when he became a billionaire was buy the company that created the gun that killed his parents.

Nora Zehetner on Her Mel Gibson Movies in 2024, Boneyard & Monster Summer
Image
The brilliant Nora Zehetner stars in two very different 2024 films, Boneyard and Monster Summer, both with Mel Gibson. In Boneyard, Zehetner plays a female detective in a hyper-masculine world, drawing on real-life experiences for authenticity. The fantasy drama Monster Summer, set for release in October, features Zehetner as a bed-and-breakfast owner and Mason Thames' mother in a coming-of-age tale.

Nora Zehetner could be the best actor whose name you don't recognize. Hopefully you do, though. Long before Star Wars, Rian Johnson directed her in the 2006 indie classic, Brick. She was a burning bright spot in The Brothers Bloom, and had an incredible arc in Marc Maron's underrated series, Maron. She recently starred opposite Scoot McNairy and Kit Harington in the excellent Blood for Dust, and is now in two back-to-back Mel Gibson movies Boneyard and Monster Summer (formerly known as Boys of Summer). The best thing is, she plays completely different roles.

Netflix Shelves Urban Fantasy Drama ‘The Grimm Reality’
Image
Exclusive: Netflix’s urban fantasy drama The Grimm Reality will not see the light of day. We’ve learned that the series from Dark producer Wiedemann & Berg and The Gryphon co-producer Dog Haus Films has been quietly shelved.

The Grimm Reality first went into development at Netflix’s German base and then into production in late 2022. We understand filming had completed, but it will not move further forwards at Netflix.

Plot details on the show were not revealed, but it was assumed to be based on the Brothers Grimm folklore tales of the 18th and 19th centuries. The series was billed a “fairy tale urban fantasy thriller,” according to What’s on Netflix, which initially broke the news of the show.

Show creators were Till Kleinert (Der Samurai) and Dog Haus’ Erol Yesilkaya, who is a producer and scriptwriter. Actors including Hyuan Wanner, Patrick Isermeyer, Eidin Jalali and Dennis Schuermann were cast.

This New-To-Prime Video Thriller Took Neo-Noir To High School
Image
Its safe to say that Rian Johnson is one of the most accomplished writer/directors working today, and someone who has always been able to turn familiar genres on their head. Johnson managed to use time travel as a great dramatic device in his science fiction thriller Looper, gave an aging sage the boost of originality that it needed in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and helmed one of the best episodes of dramatic television ever with Breaking Bads Ozymandias. While he is set to continue the highly popular Knives Out franchise with the much-anticipated threequel Wake Up, Dead Man, Johnson established the foundation of his career with his 2005 directorial debut Brick, a neo-noir thriller set in a suburban California high school.

Review: American Hustle
Image
David O. Russell was having a moment about a decade back, with a series of releases that Made him a director well worth paying attention to. The highlight was American Hustle, a black comedy focused on crime and corruption. It boasts a strong cast, led by Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Bradley Cooper, but nearly stealing the show was Jennifer Lawrence, still in the early stages of her career.

The film, out now in a new 4K Steelbook format from Sony Home Entertainment, is well worth a look if you missed it in 2013. A year earlier, Cooper and Lawrence danced their way into our hearts with the charming Silver Linings Playbook, and Russell brought them back for this caper, pitting them against one another.

Cooper is an FBI agent who forces con artists Bale and Adams into creating a sting operation intending to take down the May of Camden, New Jersey.

The 25-year-old Spaeny is coming off of Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” which earned her a Golden Globe award and the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at last year’s Venice Film Festival, and a terrific turn in one of this spring’s most talked-about films, Alex Garland’s “Civil War.” She’ll also be seen in this August’s “Alien: Romulus.” The British 34-year-old O’Connor was seen in two well-regarded movies this spring, Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” and Alice Rohrwacher’s “La Chimera.”

The two will, of course, join Daniel Craig, returning as the “gentleman sleuth” Benoit Blanc. Writer-director Rian Johnson announced on social media that the movie is about to go into production, so...

‘Knives Out’ Team Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman Sign Two-Picture Deal With Warner Bros.
Image
Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s company T-Street has signed a two-picture producing deal with Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group.

Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, who took over as the studio’s co-chairs and CEOs in 2022, orchestrated the deal. It marks the producers’ first collaboration with Warner Bros., having previously worked with Lionsgate on the box office hit “Knives Out,” Netflix on its sequel “Glass Onion,” Disney on “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and Focus Features on the neo-noir thriller “Brick.” It’s unclear if Johnson will direct either of the two films that he’ll be overseeing at Warner Bros.

“Mike and Pam’s renewed commitment to original storytelling and the theatrical experience make Warner Bros. Discovery an ideal place to help us bring the filmmakers we love to audiences around the world on a grand scale,” said Johnson and Bergman. “We’re thrilled to have them as partners.

Image
Rian Johnson is headed to the Warner Bros. lot.

The filmmaker’s T-Street banner, which he runs with producing partner Ram Bergman, has inked a two-picture producing pact with Warners, the studio announced Monday. In recent months, Tom Cruise, Margot Robbie and Ryan Coogler have all inked deals with the studio.

As a director, Johnson is known for mind-bending features like Looper, big budget genre entry Star Wars: The Last Jedi and original who dunnit film series Knives Out, which has included sequel Glass Onion and an upcoming third installment, which is aiming to film later this year for Netflix. The Correct Order To Watch The Thin Man Movies
Image
Dashiell Hammett didn't invent detective fiction, he just perfected it — partially because he knew good and goddamn well of what he wrote. The high school dropout landed a gig with the Pinkerton National Detective Agency and evidently saw the worst side of the profession when his employer got fat off industrial cash by assigning their operatives to muscle, if not kill labor organizers. Years later, he laced his first published novel, "Red Harvest," with the bitter conscience of a man who witnessed evil but out of self-preservation did nothing.

Much of Hammett's work stings like a day drunk's swallow of rotgut whiskey, a belt they absorb over and over again to escape the awfulness of a world they cannot change in any meaningful way. The Continental Op eradicating a cluster of cold-blooded thugs with the 20-steps-ahead cool of a chess grandmaster in "Red Harvest" is so satisfying it's provided the foundation for several brilliant films.
