Joel Edgerton can be seen in the upcoming Train Dreams, which screened at Sundance a few months ago, and Netflix shelled out a massive $16 million for the rights to this elegant slice of early twentieth-century Americana, which could be an awards contender if given the proper build-up. Our Chris Bumbray raved about the film, saying in his review, “It’s the kind of movie that stays with you long after you see it and hopefully will get the kind of build-up it deserves, as it will likely rank among the best films of the year when all is said and done.”
Next, Edgerton has signed on to star in a black comedy with Toni Collette titled Fangs. According to Variety, the film is described as a “thrilling black comedy about privilege, power, and dangerous fantasies.” The film will be helmed by first-time Australian director Lucy McKendrick. Gustavo Santaolalla arrived at making music for The Last Of Us for two reasons: one, that his son really resonated with the video game, and two, he wanted to do something different after winning back-to-back Oscars for his scores to Brokeback Mountain (2005) and Babel (2006).
“I’m a terrible gamer, horrendous. But we have a son that at the time that I started working on the game, he was in his mid-teen years, and he was an avid player, and a really good player, and I really enjoyed watching him play,” Santaolalla said during a conversation at Deadline’s Sound & Screen Television. “I always thought, ‘Well, if someday someone connects in an emotional level with a player, is going to really make a revolution.’ ”
At Sound & Screen, Santaolalla and his production partner David Fleming played a rousing rendition of the main theme and other music from the hit HBO | Max series.

Andrew Karpen always seemed to be in motion. At festivals like Cannes or Toronto, I’d see him racing down the street, greeting filmmakers or fellow executives with a booming, “Hey, buddy!”
At parties, he’d come up behind me, grab my shoulders and give them a shake like a Little League coach trying to loosen up a player before a game. It was his way of getting me to cast off my congenital stiffness.
And he’d enter the restaurant for one of our lunches like he’d been shot out of a cannon, peppering me with questions about my life before we even sat down and ribbing me for failing to see the latest film he was releasing. “I know you hate to leave your apartment, but would it kill you to see one of my movies?” he would joke.
Andrew was so full of irrepressible energy that...

Before Euphoria had teens crying in glitter and Stranger Things brought back scrunchies, Freaks and Geeks was the ultimate throwback teen drama. Created by Paul Feig and backed by Judd Apatow, this one-season wonder gave us everything—awkward crushes, garage band dreams, and hallway drama set in the glorious chaos of the ’80s.
However, despite its popularity and Emmy win, Freaks and Geeks was canceled after 18 episodes. Struggling with ratings, the show was unfairly booted off TV. Yet, the geeks and freaks from the series managed to climb up the ladder of fame, following this 1999 dramedy. So today, let’s check out what the gang’s up to in 2025!

Paul Haggis’s interconnected drama about racism in Los Angeles remains one of the most embarrassing Oscar decisions ever made
It doesn’t take long for Paul Haggis’s Crash to end up on the shortest of shortlists for the worst film ever to win best picture at the Oscars, maybe the single worst in the color era since 1954’s Around the World in 80 Days. At the time, it was a dark-horse favorite to upset the widely acclaimed Brokeback Mountain, premiering a full year earlier at the Toronto film festival before riding an unexpected cultural wave to awards-season glory. Now 20 years later, it feels like a “you had to be there” moment that’s hard to explain, because the movie itself is so obviously rancid that it suggests few answers on its own. The job is probably better suited to cultural anthropologists than film critics.
Nonetheless, Haggis’s ensemble piece...

David Spade was a cast member on Saturday Night Live when I was in high school, which as we all know means he imprinted on me in a fundamental way. But he was also a standup comic, and I’m sure I saw his set everywhere he did it, including in his first appearance on The Tonight Show in 1991.
More than 30 years later, Spade is still making jokes about air travel, waving drivers in ahead of him in traffic and the socially conscious celebrities of the day. Spade, in fact, still seems like he’s basically the same guy he was in that set from 1991, and you’re either going to like that or you’re not. Mostly, I did!
As someone who is both a comic and 60, Spade should be right on schedule to start complaining that he can’t say anything anymore. Instead, in his new special David...

A new 4K restoration of The Rocky Horror Picture Show will return to U.S. theaters this year in recognition of the film’s 50th anniversary. The restoration, led by the Walt Disney Studios Restoration team, includes a frame-by-frame digital scan and a newly mixed Dolby Atmos audio track. It also features a restored version of the original mono audio.
The work took place over a ten-month period, with the team focusing on maintaining the film’s original look while enhancing its image and sound. Kevin Schaeffer, Director of Restoration and Library Management at Disney, said the process was intended to give audiences “stunning picture and sound” while staying faithful to the film’s spirit.

The world was left mourning when the news of Heath Ledger’s untimely demise came to light. The news struck many as a thunderbolt. After all, the 10 Things I Hate About You star left us at the young age of 28.
On top of that, his career seemed to hold a lot of promise. The Dark Knight might have established his reputation as one of the greatest of the generation. Alas. If only he had lived to see how the world reacted to his role. Fans around the world lamented the loss of a talent of Ledger’s pedigree. But it seems like that they’ll have another chance to appreciate his work.

In honor of the film's 20th Anniversary, Focus Features is re-releasing Ang Lee's 2005 film Brokeback Mountain. The movie features an impressive cast, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger, Anne Hathaway, and Michelle Williams, in a film that chronicles the intimate and heartbreaking relationship between two cowboys sent to work on the titular Brokeback Mountain. Taking place during the summer of 1963, Ang Lee's film was considered a bold film at the time of its release, and helped push the boundaries for queer narratives in film and television.
Brokeback Mountain's premise centers on Ennis Del Mar (Ledger) and Jack Twist (Gyllenhaal), with the two actors delivering awe-inspiring performances that set the tone for the film. Premiering at the Venice Film Festival in 2005, Brokeback Mountain was one of the few films that year to dominate awards buzz and conversations. Sandfall Interactive just can’t stop winning, huh? Within a week of releasing their reactive RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has gained a lot of attention. It’s possible Sandfall Interactive was sure about being a hit, as a live adaptation of the game was greenlit before release.
As of 2025, stories from games are getting highlighted in mainstream media. Recent ones being Devil May Cry and The Last of Us Part 2. While both these stories are well known and have gained a massive audience over the years, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 only took a week.
While it has been confirmed that a live adaptation is in the works, fans are going crazy over who should be cast to showcase the masterpiece. It’s for sure nobody wants a Last of Us situation repeated.

Karpen launched New York-based Bleecker Street in 2014 with the backing of Manoj Bhargava, founder of the 5-hour Energy drink. He named his company with a nod to the old Focus headquarters at 65 Bleecker St.

“I had to text Lily-Rose Depp and say I’m sorry,” casting director Kharmel Cochrane explained this afternoon during a Q&a session at Scotland’s Sands Film Festival.
The apology was on account of Cochrane dismissing Lily-Rose Depp as a serious contender for a leading role in Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu. The vampire remake is one of the many buzzy titles Cochrane has cast in recent years. Her other credits include Saltburn, Rye Lane, and Bob Marley: One Love.
“I had said absolutely no way to Lily-Rose Depp,” Cochrane continued, breaking down the Nosferatu casting process.
“I didn’t think she could act. I hadn’t seen anything that I thought showed she could act. And I’m not even bothered by the nepotism thing. I think that’s a whole other conversation. And then she auditioned. I was wrong. And I’ve got no shame in saying if I’m not right.

Plot: Muriel and her husband Lee are about to begin a bright new life, which is upended by the arrival of Lee’s brother. Muriel embarks on a secret life, gambling on racehorses and discovering a love she never thought possible.
Review: In 2005, it was considered radical that Brokeback Mountain would get a wide theatrical release, considering it was a homosexual love story. How times have changed. Two decades later, On Swift Horses is the latest in a long line of queer films that boast substantial star power and nuanced narratives about same-sex relationships. The stigma is no longer as prominent as it once was, but there is still something to be said about heterosexual actors playing gay characters. Still, it bodes well for box office performance when you have up-and-coming talents like Jacob Elordi and Daisy Edgar-Jones in those roles. Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" Trilogy benefits from some seriously stellar casting, and among the clearest bullseyes it hit was the decision to cast Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth. The British veteran has the exact right screen presence to match -- and, when necessary, one-up -- the specific energy Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne has, and more than enough gravitas to tell off the billionaire vigilante in a way that's utterly believable.
As a winner of two Academy Awards, Caine has been around the block as an actor and seen some seriously great performances. Still, even he had to do a double take when the trilogy's true Mvp entered the game. "The Dark Knight" remains Heath Ledger's best movie, thanks to his magnificent portrayal of the Joker. Caine's Alfred famously delivers the iconic description of the Joker and others like him in "The Dark Knight" (2008), and in his memoir "Don't Look Back,...

Given the vast accolades that have been heaped upon Ang Lee over the course of his decades-long career, it would be difficult to classify the Taiwanese filmmaker as “underrated.” Two Academy Awards for directing; two Golden Lions from the Venice Film Festival; two Golden Bears from Berlin (the only director to do so); and historical status as an ambassador of the late-century crossover of the Taiwanese New Wave into American film culture.
And yet, in the periodic conversations arguing the best filmmakers in the business today, Lee’s name is one rarely, if ever, mentioned. Now maybe that’s because the man hasn’t made anything in a good while (capping off the previous decade with easily his worst film), but Lee’s status as a bold craftsman with a penchant for tender nuance shouldn’t be disregarded; with nearly every film, Lee is a director who pushes himself in...

Jacob Benjamin Gyllenhaal—bet you didn’t know that—is one of the most celebrated actors in Hollywood. Most popular actors we see on screen today are tied down to particular types of roles that they play repeatedly. Say, Tom Cruise with his crazy adventures of flying a plane or jumping off a cliff, Keanu Reeves with heroic high-action roles, and Dwayne Johnson with charismatic, larger-than-life characters.
But this is not the case with Gyllenhaal; the actor and his versatility go hand in hand. Take, for example, the role of a former professional fighter, a war hero, a psychopath, and even a romantic—this man has done it all. He also has an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Brokeback Mountain. It’s safe to say that he is someone who thrives on taking big risks and pushing creative boundaries.

“Queer theory takes the joy out of being gay!” blurts Bowen Yang’s character Chris in one of several laugh-out-loud yet emotional moments in “The Wedding Banquet,” Korean American filmmaker Andrew Ahn’s fourth feature in just nine years. It’s a “reimagining” rather than a remake of Ang Lee’s beloved 1993 Asian American rom-com classic of the same name.
Chris, who has put his PhD on hold, passes his days as a birder. When his amiable, handsome Korean Mfa art student boyfriend Min (Han Gi-Chan) — in dire need of a green card to avoid being shuttled back to Korea and take rein of a chaebol managed by his astute grandmother played by Yuh-Jung Youn — proposes, Chris, though quite in love with Min, is petrified of committing. How can he, if he can’t commit to even a PhD? As his cousin (Bobo Le) sharply observes, Chris is merely interested...

This article contains spoilers for the premiere of "The Last of Us" season 2.
"The Last of Us" has an interesting approach when it comes to video game adaptations. For the most part, the show plays like a shot-for-shot remake of the video game of the same name directed by Cruce Straley and Neil Druckmann and developed by studio Naughty Dog. Except the series does something unexpected every so often, from dedicating an episode to telling the backstory of a minor character whose nuance most gamers miss, or wholly original prologues that show how the Cordyceps fungal infection started abroad.
When it comes to meta references to the games, "The Last of Us" finds a good balance between winks at the audience and just loving tributes to the people who helped make the game. Take the casting of Ashley Johnson as Ellie's mom, a beautiful cameo that works on many levels...

Netflix is serving up a new trailer for their culinary comedy Nonnas. Vince Vaughn stars as an aspiring restauranteur who recruits the neighborhood nonnas (grandmothers) to staff his kitchen. The film, which is based on the real-life story of Joe Scaravella, will premiere on the streamer on May 9, 2025.
In the trailer, Vaughn plays Scaravella, an Mta employee grieving the loss of his mother. While looking through her recipes, he comes up with the idea of honoring her memory by opening his own Italian restaurant, and hiring elderly women with decades of home-cooking experience to staff it. Bruno (Joe Manganiello) thinks he's crazy, but is he? To the strains of Billy Joel's "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant," we see him struggling with kitchen fires, staff disputes, and some internecine conflict from the titular nonnas, including Susan Sarandon(Bull Durham), Lorraine Bracco(Goodfellas), Talia Shire (Rocky), and Brenda Vaccaro (Midnight Cowboy...

Brokeback Mountain, despite its Oscar snub way back in 2005, remains at the forefront of conversations when it comes to the subject of cinema. The film lost out to the Sandra Bullock starer Crash, a development that ignited a significant controversy at the time when the decision was made.
However, it seems that time has failed to heal that particular wound, given that Michelle Williams, the star of Brokeback Mountain, is still not above taking a dig at Crash‘s victory at the Academy Awards.

On Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, the host of the show talked about how much he loved Brokeback Mountain, and how Crash, which starred Sandra Bullock, was simply the wrong choice for the title of Best Picture. While Williams did not bring up the topic, it seemed that the actress agreed with Cohen’s assessment wholeheartedly.

Michelle Williams appeared on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen this week, revisiting her experience filming Brokeback Mountain and reflecting on the response the movie received during its 2005 release. While promoting her upcoming FX series Dying for Sex, Williams responded to Cohen’s comments about the film’s lasting effect.
Cohen opened the conversation by expressing how much the film meant to him personally. “May I gush to you about what an important movie Brokeback Mountain was to me, and it is still I think in my top two movies of all time,” he said. He asked Williams whether she sensed its cultural weight while working on it. Williams responded, “Yes, because people were so open about it.”
She spoke about her experience during the press tour, saying, “I just remember doing the junket and you don’t get an opportunity to see a lot of grown men cry.

Michelle Williams is looking back on her beloved film Brokeback Mountain.
The actress recently stopped by Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen to promote her new show, Dying for Sex, when host Andy Cohen spoke about what the film means to him.
“May I gush to you about what an important movie Brokeback Mountain was to me and it is still I think in my top two movies of all time. Did you realize at the time that you were making that, what a profound impact it was going to have on people?” he asked Williams, to which she responded, “Yes, because people were so open about it.”
Williams continued, “I just remember doing the junket and you don’t get an opportunity to see a lot of grown men cry. That was the moment that I think we all knew that it was going to be special to people.

After 20 years, Michelle Williams is just as confused as the rest of us by a major Academy Award injustice.
The 5x Oscar nominee recently questioned why the Academy snubbed her 2005 Ang Lee-helmed gay western Brokeback Mountain, which infamously lost the Best Picture trophy to Paul Haggis’ Crash.
“I mean, what was Crash?” Williams asked on Watch What Happens Live while discussing the film’s continued impact.
“People were so open about it,” she recalled. “I just remember doing the junket. You don’t really get an opportunity to see a lot of grown men cry. That was the moment that I think that we all knew that it was going to be special.
Brokeback Mountain starred Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as ranch hand Ennis Del Mar and rodeo cowboy Jack Twist, who begin a 20-year love affair while herding sheep together in 1963.

Michelle Williams swung by “Watch What Happens Live” on Thursday and learning that “Brokeback Mountain” — the 2005 cowboy romance that earned her her first Oscar nomination — is one of host Andy Cohen’s favorite movies, took part in some light ribbing of the often-maligned race drama that beat it at the Oscars for Best Picture, “Crash.”
“I was very upset about the Best Picture loss,” Cohen said. “I mean, ‘Crash’? Is that what won?”
“I mean, what was ‘Crash’?” Williams questioned slyly.
Cohen, energized by the light shade, responded: “Right, thank you! By the way, who’s talking about ‘Crash’ right now? I hear a pin drop. Yes, very upset.”
The conversation began with Williams, visiting the Bravo talk show studio in promotion of her new FX sex dramedy “Dying for Sex,” reflecting on the significance “Brokeback Mountain” had at the time of its release for telling a gay love story...

Michelle Williams appeared on “Watch What Happens Live” to promote her new FX series “Dying for Sex.” During the interview, host Andy Cohen took a brief moment to call out one of her most acclaimed movies: Ang Lee’s “Brokeback Mountain.” Willians earned an Oscar nomination for playing Alma, the increasingly isolated wife of Heath Ledger’s damaged cowboy.
Cohen explained to Williams “what an important movie ‘Brokeback Mountain'” was to him and so many gay men at the time of its 2005 theatrical release, adding: “I think it’s still in my top two movies of all time. Michelle Williams is still puzzled 20 years later by “Crash” beating out “Brokeback Mountain” for Best Picture. Williams said during “Watch What Happens Live!” (in the below video) while promoting series “Dying for Sex” that she is baffled by even the plot of “Crash.”
Paul Haggis wrote and directed the ensemble race drama that starred Sandra Bullock, Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon, Jennifer Esposito, William Fichtner, and Brendan Fraser. (Haggis was later found liable on three counts of rape and sexual abuse in 2022.) “Crash” won Best Picture at the 2006 Oscars, despite Ang Lee’s queer Western romance “Brokeback Mountain” having already won Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Original Score.
“Brokeback Mountain” starred Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger as two closeted cowboys who leave their wives, played by Anne Hathaway and Williams, for a few days every few years. The film was adapted from Annie Proulx’s novella by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana.

Jake Gyllenhaal Ambulance Action Scene ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
“I’ve always had this sort of dream since I was younger to be in a Michael Bay [movie].” And Jake Gyllenhaal finally made it happen with Ambulance. If you ever wondered what it’s like to star in a Bay explosion-fest, Gyllenhaal had been wondering the same thing, since he was a kid.
Ambulance was classic Bay chaos. Two brothers (Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) planned a bank heist. It went south. They hijacked an ambulance. Cue the sirens, bullet storms, and high-speed mayhem through L.A., with an injured cop and an Emt (Eiza González) trapped inside. The movie did what Bay movies do – big action, big explosions, and enough plot holes to drive, well, an ambulance through. Critics weren’t exactly in love, but it pulled a decent 67% on Rotten Tomatoes.
For Gyllenhaal, this wasn’t just another role; it was a full-circle moment.

Netflix has just turned the Bat-signal on to attract all subscribers and it's not a hoax. In order to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Batman Begins, the streamer decided to bring the whole trilogy helmed by Cristopher Nolan (Oppenheimer) into the catalog. With entries still ranked among the best superhero movies ever made, the trilogy still serves as reference for tone and how to create the perfect villain. You can stream all movies as early as today.
It's baffling to realize, but it's been almost 20 years since Nolan decided to bring a different approach to the superhero genre. The British director decided to set Batman Begins in a more grounded version of Gotham City, and made the bold move of only showing the title character one hour into the movie. Before that, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) has a whole arc in which he loses his parents, flees Gotham, spends a...

Actor Heath Ledger died tragically young in 2008 at the age of 28. The loss of the actor at such a young age not only was a huge blow to his family, friends and fans, but also left a huge hole in film history since we will never know what the actor would have accomplished in his later years.
It makes his death even more tragic in a strange way in that Ledger just seemed to be hitting his stride as an actor. His performance as The Joker in "The Dark Knight," released shortly after his death, brought him critical raves and a posthumous Oscar as Best Supporting Actor.
Ledger began acting as a teenager on television in his native Australia. A series of successful roles there and in a few Australian films led to him being cast in the American teenage comedy “10 Things I Hate About You.” With his teen idol good looks,...

Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight was so revered that it earned the late actor a posthumous Academy Award. It was a well-deserved win from the point of view of co-star Michael Caine, who was genuinely terrified of Ledger on the set.
Caine reflected on working with Ledger in his book, Don't Look Back, You'll Trip Over: My Guide to Life (per NME). Caine remembered how it felt when Ledger first came onto the set in character as the Joker, which was perhaps even more frightening than seeing the performance play out on-screen. Though Caine had spent several decades as a working actor at this point in his career, he also felt that Ledger's work in the role was so good that it influenced everyone else on the set to "raise our game" as well.

Filmmakers and studio executives, be warned: a long-suspected Oscars curse may in fact be real.
Over the past 13 years, the vast majority of best director winners have followed up their wins with disastrous films that tanked at the box office or alienated viewers. These films ultimately brought the highs of a career-defining moment crashing down to the reality of the fickle and unpredictable tastes of modern audiences.
Take a look and a pattern becomes clear: Ang Lee’s Life of Pi (2012) follow-up Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk (2016) was a box office disaster. Damien Chazelle’s La La Land (2016) follow-up First Man (2018) failed to connect. Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley (2021) didn’t come close to making back its budget after The Shape of Water (2018) dazzled the Academy. Chloé Zhao followed up the gorgeous Nomadland (2020) with the would-be superhero franchise starter, Eternals (2021). That one landed with a thud.

In Sebastian, a writer sells his body to provide material for his debut novel, then doesn’t give the night job up. Mikko Mäkelä explains what inspired his film – and remembers his cinematic sexual awakening
Growing up in a small Finnish town close to the Russian border, Mikko Mäkelä knew he was gay from the age of 11. “I think I was happy until then,” says the shy 36-year-old, whose slippery second film Sebastian is about to be released. Isolated he may have been, but at least the young Mäkelä had movies. Alone in his room, he watched queer gems such as Mysterious Skin, Presque Rien and Beautiful Thing, keeping the volume low in case his parents heard. Then a trip to the cinema to see Brokeback Mountain changed everything.

Peacock’s upcoming Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake has taken a major step forward, with Emmy-nominated actor Linda Cardellini confirmed to play one of horror’s most iconic maternal figures: Pamela Voorhees. The series, developed by A24 and helmed by Brad Caleb Kane, is shrouded in secrecy, though casting Cardellini suggests a significant exploration of Jason Voorhees’ twisted origin story through the eyes of the woman who started it all.
First appearing in Sean S. Cunningham’s 1980 Friday the 13th, Pamela Voorhees carved her place into horror history by committing a bloody string of murders in retaliation for her son Jason’s apparent drowning at Camp Crystal Lake. In a bold twist that challenged expectations at the time, the original film revealed her—not Jason—as the killer. The image of a grief-stricken mother driven to homicidal madness has since become a defining element of the franchise’s enduring mythos.

Big news for horror lovers—we’ve got a familiar face joining the ‘Friday the 13th’ world. According to Variety, Linda Cardellini, known for her standout roles across TV and film, is taking on the part of Pamela Voorhees in Peacock’s upcoming series ‘Crystal Lake.’ This prequel dives into the story before Jason Voorhees became the machete-swinging killer we all recognize, and I’m already excited to see how it unfolds.
Pamela Voorhees isn’t just a side character here. If you’ve seen the original 1980 ‘Friday the 13th’ movie, you know she’s the one behind the bloody rampage at Camp Crystal Lake. Driven by grief over her son Jason’s drowning, she takes out her anger on the counselors she blames.
That film, made on a tiny budget of $550,000, raked in close to $60 million at the box office, kicking off a franchise that’s given us eleven more movies,...

Linda Cardellini is set for the lead role in the “Friday the 13th” prequel series at Peacock, Variety has learned.
Cardellini will star as Pamela Voorhees in the expanded prequel series, which is titled “Crystal Lake.” The show was originally picked up straight to series at Peacock in 2022.
Fans of the “Friday the 13th” franchise will recall that Pamela Voorhees was the mother of Jason Voorhees, the hockey mask-wearing slasher featured throughout most of the films in the horror franchise. But in the original film, Jason is a child who drowns at Camp Crystal Lake. His death leads his mother, Pamela, to seek revenge against the counselors she blamed for her son’s death.
Cardellini was recently cast in a lead role in the upcoming HBO series “Dtf St. Louis” alongside David Harbour and Jason Bateman. She is a three-time Emmy nominee — one for “Mad Men” and two for “Dead to Me.

Heath Ledger's passing in 2008, when he was only 28 years old, stands as one of the most tragic cultural losses in living memory. Ledger was on the rise as a leading man, and he wanted to supplement his acting career with directing, a la Clint Eastwood or Robert Redford. Saddest of all, he passed mere months before "The Dark Knight" premiered and never got to bask in the praise of his titanic performance as the Joker.
The idea that Ledger "lost himself" in the Joker is an urban myth, but his performance was a committed and transformative one. His voice is unrecognizable, and he added his own details to the Joker — like licking his scarred lips, or leaving traces of make-up on his fingers — to make the larger-than-life villain feel like a real person.
Ledger has and will continue to be remembered for the Joker. It's not a bad legacy!

The gender pay disparity has long been an issue in Hollywood, and Melanie Lynskey experienced it first-hand during her tenure in Chuck Lorre’s Two and a Half Men. Notable for leaning towards artistic and creatively fulfilling gigs, Lynskey rose to prominence in the early 2000s following her tenure in the Charlie Sheen-led show.

Despite serving as a regular in the initial seasons of the show, who was then relegated to guest appearances in the latter seasons, the actress revealed that she was apparently making the bare minimum from the job.

Andrew Ahn and James Schamus stepped into the spotlight to discuss their reimagining of Ang Lee’s Oscar-nominated 1993 classic The Wedding Banquet and their careers at a “The Makers” event held on Wednesday as part of BFI Flare, the London Lgbtqia+ Film Festival.
Director/co-writer Ahn was also asked about the backlash against queer rights in various parts of the world. “I wish it weren’t so fraught, and it makes me incredibly anxious. I can only hope that this film coming out … is is an opportunity for people to build community, watch this film together, gain some strength, and then be able to go out there and fight for what is portrayed on screen,” he said.
“It just shows you it’s never a guarantee. It’s always this pendulum swing.”
Added co-writer/co-producer Schamus: “It was that moment which we all experienced just recently at Sundance [where the movie premiered] and I...

When “On Swift Horses” played as a secret screening at the Palm Springs Film Festival in January, at least half a dozen people walked out, not because it’s bad but because a certain contingent of the normally open-minded art-house audience hadn’t signed up for a gay love story. For that reason, it feels like the opposite of a spoiler — something between a consumer service and a selling point — to address what the festival capsules only coyly imply, using phrases like “self-discovery” (Toronto) and “exploring a love she never dreamed possible” (SXSW).
Adapted from the well-regarded novel by Shannon Pufahl, director Daniel Minahan’s queer period drama explores the challenges of coming out in the 1950s, as two characters attracted not to one another — as those deliberately deceptive plot synopses would have you think — but to members of their own genders. Knowing that allows you to focus not on...
