While these are more space fantasy than true sci-fi, the genre's core purpose is to offer commentary on our present and possible future. Films like Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, and Ridley Scott's The Martian are exemplary in their scientific fidelity. However, one film stands out for its unparalleled accuracy: Ron Howard's Apollo 13.
The Story of the Failed, Yet Heroic Flight to the Moon
"Apollo 13" is not your typical sci-fi movie but rather a science space drama with fictional elements, dramatizing the perilous events of the April 1970 space mission. Directed by Ron Howard, known for films like Willow, A Beautiful Mind, and The Da Vinci Code, and written by William Broyles Jr. and Al Reinert, the movie meticulously recreates the dangerous mission.

Even before Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace made its way to the theatre, Newsweek published an article bashing the film, whose criticisms were based on the trailer’s upbeat tone and rumors. Moreover, the piece also took shots at Jake Lloyd, who was 9 at the time, following the rumors surrounding his portrayal of young Anakin Skywalker.
Furious by the article, which targeted Lloyd without even seeing the film, The Da Vinci Code director Ron Howard wrote a letter in support of the child actor to the outlet.

Russell Crowe will save souls and ride Lambrettas again: "The Pope's Exorcist" is officially getting a sequel! Producer Jeff Katz took to Twitter on Wednesday evening to announce the news, posting, "Amorth Nation -- I just got the call...It's Officially Happening!!!" Katz followed up with an Italian phrase, "È un seguito, amici miei," which translates to "It's a sequel, my friends."
Never one to miss a chance to reference Crowe's character's motorized scooter (aren't we all?), Katz also wrote, "Thank you to the amazing #ThePopesExorcist fans. You made this happen. Gas up your Lambretta - and get ready to ride."
"The Pope's Exorcist" was both a slightly campy novelty and a surprise box office success when it dropped in April 2023, earning nearly $77 million worldwide against a comparatively slim budget of just $18 million (per Variety). The film blew past initial expectations -- the Variety article cited above guessed it would earn $10 million in U.

Spider-Man 2 villain Doctor Octopus was played by Alfred Molina, who made his debut as Satipo in Harrison Ford’s Raiders of the Lost Ark. Since then, Molina has built a solid portfolio in Hollywood with projects like Boogie Nights, Frida, and The Da Vinci Code. However, his father was not happy that he turned down the high-paying manager position to pursue his dream of acting. Molina was moved to tears as he shared that he hoped his father had lived longer to see his success in the industry.

Chris Hemsworth is one of the most respected and well-known faces in Hollywood. Through his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as the Extraction films, he has gained a lot of attention in the film industry. Despite this, there is one fact that is undeniable; he has not been seen in many challenging roles for him as an actor.
Chris Hemsworth in Thor: The Dark World
While the characters that he played certainly require a huge level of physical dedication, his emotional range has rarely been taken out for a spin by directors. This is a fact that seems to bother the actor, as he spoke about it during a recent interview.
It would seem that there was one movie that Hemsworth thought would change his image in Hollywood. Unfortunately, this was not the case.

As the social and political turmoil of 1960s America spilled into the 1970s, network television executives and producers knew they could no longer ignore the thorny issues being argued over kitchen tables and at work/school. The Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Equal Rights Amendment, etc. were driving a wedge between families and neighbors. So when Norman Lear trotted out the unrepentant bigot Archie Bunker on "All in the Family" in 1971, many people in the country felt seen. And while they might not agree on the hot-button topics explored on this show, they could at least laugh through their many disagreements.
There came a point, however (somewhere between President Richard M. Nixon's resignation and the end of the Vietnam War), where television viewers grew weary of all these socially conscious sitcoms. Yes, they were still watching them in huge numbers, but they needed a break from the nonstop tumult of their lives.

Elvis Presley‘s “Burning Love” didn’t seem to offend people in the 1970s. It should have raised eyebrows in religious circles. Despite this, the popular perception of the “Hound Dog” singer probably made it seem more innocuous.
Elvis Presley’s ‘Burning Love’ is a little hellish
Mixing sexuality with religion is not new. The Romans worshipped lust deities, such as Venus and her son, Cupid. However, Christianity is traditionally averse to combining the erotic with the religious. Since the United States is a majority Christian nation, combining its iconography with sex can be inflammatory.
For example, The Da Vinci Code and its film adaptation were condemned by numerous Christians for portraying Jesus Christ as a married man. Madonna’s video for “Like a Prayer” shocked the world by depicting the Queen of Pop getting intimate with a saint. Lil Nas X raised eyebrows for playing a sexualized Christ figure...

“The Beekeeper” is the best kind of bad movie — which is to say, it’s the sort that puts entertainment ahead of pretentiousness, embracing the laughter sure to accompany such an unapologetically stupid, ultra-violent premise. Starring Jason Statham in what feels like a parody of Jason Statham movies, this conspiracy-fueled action showcase tortures its central metaphor until it can only be seen as a joke, featuring the “Transporter” star as ruthless, retired government assassin-turned-benevolent beekeeper Adam Clay, who’s pushed back into berserker mode after a phishing attack targets the kindly old woman from whom he rents a barn.
If you don’t get a hearty belly laugh out of watching Statham scowl his way through the opening montage, in which Clay is shown collecting honey and tending his hives on a bucolic country estate while landlady Eloise (Phylicia Rashad) falls for a blatantly fishy online scam, then “The Beekeeper” is probably not for you.

As is said with JFK, no American will ever forget where they were, or what they were doing, when Tony Soprano was shot in the series finale of The Sopranos. Recall is easier in the case of Tony, as every single witness was doing exactly the same thing at the time of his assassination: getting ready to kick their TVs into a million pieces.
The strange thing is that little of the raw emotion stirred up by the finale was connected with the actual assassination of Tony Soprano. Hardly anyone flinched, raged, gasped, or wept for the terminated mafioso. Do you know why? Because hardly anyone – myself included – even knew that it had happened. Over a million witnesses to a murder, and not one of them could give a credible statement or offer reliable testimony. Now that, my friends, is the definition of a perfect mafia hit.
It begs the question,...

Supernatural horror genre audiences can add Julius Avery‘s The Pope’s Exorcist to their 2023 list of films to see. It’s a darker religious film than Ron Howard‘s Tom Hanks-led The Da Vinci Code (2006) and Angels & Demons (2009). The Pope’s Exorcist was based on and adapted from the famous Exorcist of Rome, Father Gabriele Amorth‘s books, An Exorcist Tells His Story (1990) and An Exorcist: More Stories (1992). Most of the film’s 103 minutes is set in 1987, in Castile, Spain. Although it is a supernatural horror, its storyline and conversations add a bit of humor to the film.

There are many television shows and movies that question the clergy in a confrontational way. Hollywood gave us the brilliant movie Spotlight. There was the commercially popular The Da Vinci Code and an independent film named Philomena. The Derry Girls is a comedic take on the Irish conflict and its connection with Catholicism. 1923, the Paramount+ show, comes close to questioning the abuses the Catholic Church inflicted on the indigenous culture.

Found footage horror evolves in an unexpected way: the Paramount horror movie series Paranormal Activity has a stage play in the works.
THR reports that “Simon Friend, the veteran producer who brought Life of Pi to Broadway, has picked up the license to the Paramount horror movie series with the intent of bringing it to the West End via his Simon Friend Entertainment.”
The stage play adaptation of Paranormal Activity is in early development and set to be penned by Levi Holloway, who previously wrote Grey House.
The 2007 found footage film that started it all, Paranormal Activity, was written and directed by Oren Peli. With pop culture phenomenon Stranger Things already spreading its upside down-y tendrils to the stage this year, word arrives of another popular title making the jump to treading the boards. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paranormal Activity is in development as a play.
Oren Pelli's original micro-budget chiller starred Micah Sloat and Katie Featherston as a couple troubled by some demonic goings-on, all captured by security cameras, phones and camcorders.
The movie, made for a tight $15,000 (with extra for finishing touches and marketing when Paramount picked it up), has one of the most profitable ever made, earning $193.4 million and spawning a franchise that has so far earned close to a billion dollars.
Producer Simon Friend, who has movie-to-stage experience with The Da Vinci Code and Life Of Pi, will oversee the new potential play, while Levi Holloway, whose most recent work was horror-tinged Broadway show Grey House, is developing the script.

It was a found-footage-stylized microbudget horror pic that spawned a six film theatrical franchise that grossed over $890M, now Paranormal Activity is set to be a play.
Deadline has confirmed that Simon Friend, the producer of the Broadway version of Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, has taken the license on the Paramount/Blumhouse horror feature to set it up as a West End play.
Levi Holloway, the scribe of Broadway horror play Grey House, is currently writing Paranormal Activity for the stage.
Oren Peli wrote and directed the first pic, which centers around a family being haunted by a demon. The intrigue, much like the first Blair Witch Project, was the feeling that these horror movies could be real.
Friend’s stage adaptation productions include those of such pics The Da Vinci Code and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Life of Pi won five Olivier Awards and three Tonys.

Levi Holloway, who wrote the horror-tinged Broadway play Grey House, is on board to pen the stage adaptation, which is described as being in early development.
Created by Oren Peli, who wrote, directed, and shot the initial installment, Paranormal is a horror movie series focused, in most outings, on a family terrorized by a demon. The bulk of them were made between 2009 and 2015. The movies capitalized on the growing proliferation of video and cellphone cameras to tell spooky and jump-scare-filled tales to great effect.

Jamie Christopher, the valuable first assistant director whose work spanned such films as Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and all eight Harry Potter movies, has died. He was 52.
Christopher died Tuesday from heart complications in Los Angeles.
Hailing from a filmmaking family — his father was a production manager on Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon and his mother a production coordinator — Christopher rose to become an in-demand crewmember for studio franchises and filmmakers, running and scheduling shoots.
He worked for and developed strong relationships with Rian Johnson, James Gunn, David Yates and Sam Raimi, among others, and in the process became the second highest grossing assistant director in the film business.
“Jamie was a good friend, and he loved making movies,” Johnson, who worked with Christopher on Last Jedi and Knives Out, said in a statement. “He loved his crew, loved his job, the process of it and the history of it.

It’s a case of one score to rule them all, as Howard Shore’s stirring epic soundtrack for The Lord of the Rings trilogy was voted the U.K.’s favorite movie music.
Shore’s score for the Rings film, which has won three Academy Awards, three Golden Globes and four Grammys, came out ahead of some of the greatest and most recognizable soundtracks of all time, including John Williams’ music for Schindler’s List and Star Wars, which came second and third respectively.
The list of the top 100 film scores was compiled by popular U.K. radio station Classic FM, as part of their annual Movie Music Hall of Fame. More than 10,000 people voted for this year’s edition and the winner was revealed on Sunday by Jonathan Ross, the former presenter of the BBC’s Film program.

Turns out, all you need is Louvre. After Heartstopper sent Tao and Elle on the date from hell in Season 2’s third episode (recapped here), we were afraid that that was it; they were friend-zoned for life. But in Episode 5, “Heat,” a trip to the museum gives the would-be sweethearts an unexpected second chance at romance.
Inspired by her surroundings, Elle sits down to sketch. (Alas, no shoe potato this time.) Right by her side, Tao is suggesting that more movies should be shot in the Louvre and complaining that the only one he can think of is the “monstrosity...

Tom Hanks has engaged in a few love scenes in his long and historic career. But some of his love scenes were cut in one of his biggest films, which somewhat disappointed the star.
How Tom Hanks responded to his love scenes being cut Tom Hanks | Taylor Hill/FilmMagic
Some of Hanks’ biggest movies were the Da Vinci Code films. Hanks played the lead in the series’ three movies, including the second film in the trilogy Angels & Demons. But some noticed that the movie was missing a few love scenes that were supposed to be included. In a 2009 interview with Parade, Hanks explained why his love scenes with co-star Ayelet Zurer couldn’t make the film.
“We really don’t have time to make out or go to bed when Cardinals are being killed on the hour. We tried to work it into the screenplay over and over again,...

Richard Armitage as Father Quart, in The Man From Rome. Courtesy of Screen Media
If you’re craving a Da Vinci Code sort of movie but don’t want to concentrate quite that hard, The Man From Rome may be your answer. The plot, penned by Adrian Bol, Beth Bollinger and Gretchen Cowan, is very Dan Brownian but shorter and with fewer moving pieces and locations. Hunky Richard Armitage stars as a Vatican troubleshooting priest who we quickly understand to be the Church’s go-to guy for dangerous missions. Not so much for gruesome cleanups like Harvey Keitel’s memorable Mr. Wolf, in Pulp Fiction but where there’s a problem, Armitage’s Father Quart is reliable for a solution. The film opens with his being bummed about someone he was unable to protect on a recent job. Not his fault but guilt lingers, regardless.

Tom Hanks delivered a commencement address to Harvard’s 2023 graduating class in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Thursday.
The university granted the celebrated actor an honorary degree of arts. He joked that other than playing a Harvard professor in The Da Vinci Code movies, they gave him the degree without him having to do “a lick of work, without having spent any time in class [and] without once walking into that library.” He later quipped, “public global policy is something I scan in the newspaper just before I do the Wordle.”
But then, Hanks became more serious, calling on the graduating students to stand up against the “indifference of a people who have been made weary by struggle.” He continued, saying that indifference “makes citizens into indentured servants.”
In one section, Hanks lashed out at those who would “ban books” in an apparent swipe at Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who just announced his...

Tom Hanks offered nothing but wisdom and the truth while delivering a keynote address to Harvard University’s graduating class of 2023 on Thursday.
The actor, who famously starred as a Harvard professor named Robert Langdon in 2006’s “The Da Vinci Code” and its two sequels — “Angels & Demons” (2009) and “Inferno” (2016) — kicked things off by poking fun at his lack of credentials in comparison to the graduating class.
“It’s not fair, but please don’t be embittered by this fact,” Hanks, 66, began. “Now, without having done a lick of work, without having spent any time in class, without once walking into that library — in order to have anything to do with the graduating class of Harvard, its faculty, or its distinguished alumni — I make a damn good living playing someone who did.
“It’s the way of the world, kids,” he added as the audience erupted with laughter.

America's mom and dad crossed the pond to enjoy a stylish night out at the Cannes Film Festival. On May 23, Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks stopped by the Palais des Festivals for the premiere of "Asteroid City," the upcoming Wes Anderson film they appear in together. The longtime couple had the time of their lives on the red carpet, joining hands to dance along to the music and posing with their youngest son, 27-year-old Truman, who tagged along for the special occasion. The stars matched in custom Versace outfits - a black caped dress with hand-embroidered beading for Wilson and a black suit and bowtie for Hanks.
While making their way into the event, the parents of four were photographed having what appeared to be a heated conversation with a festival staffer. News stories quickly popped up claiming that Hanks yelled at the employee, but Wilson swiftly put the rumor mill to rest,...

Peacock's new series "Mrs. Davis" opens with a dramatic sequence of events, to say the least. As a group of knights called the Knights Templar are executed, a young girl steals away with an object that viewers soon discover is the Holy Grail. It's a series of events that may not appear connected to a show about a nun (Betty Gilpin) trying to defeat an all-powerful artificial intelligence, which is the essence of the plot of the sci-fi show, but it does all eventually tie together in mind-blowing ways.
The real-life Knights Templar were a Christian military order that were founded around 1119, per World History. Their original headquarters was set on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, and they existed for around two centuries. During that time, they fought formidably in the Crusades. Their order grew weaker as the Crusades came to a close, though, but everything ended with King Philip IV of France.

Over the weekend, something unexpected happened. At least at the box office.
Sony’s “The Pope’s Exorcist,” a slimly budgeted supernatural thriller based, in part, on the real-life story of Father Gabriele Amorth (played by Russell Crowe), a Roman Catholic priest and former Resistance fighter in World War II who by the year 2000 had boasted that he had performed over 50,000 exorcisms, went up against more fearsome opponent than the devil himself – “Renfield,” a big-budget horror comedy from Universal starring Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult. Incredibly, “The Pope’s Exorcist” came out on top.
And much of that success had to do with the nimble direction of Julius Avery, the Australian director of Bad Robot’s criminally underrated “Overlord” and last year’s Sylvester Stallone vehicle “Samaritan.”
TheWrap talked to Avery about getting past the tired tropes of the exorcism genre, working with Crowe and what his “Flash Gordon” movie was going...

The past several years have seen several buzzworthy horror films released — but none has been more controversial than the 2023 flick, Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey.
The slasher retelling of the beloved children’s stories made the rounds on social media well before it was released, drumming up significant fan interest. When the movie was released, it became a surprise hit. It prompted a sequel order and many positive responses from horror fans.
While many are already making plans to see the sequel, citizens of China shouldn’t expect to catch it in theaters. The country banned Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey for a rather interesting reason.

The Rev. Edward Siebert’s journey with “The Pope’s Exorcist,” a film about arguably the most famous exorcist in the Catholic Church, began with an adventuresome visit to Milan about six years ago.
The Jesuit priest recalls sitting at a restaurant sipping wine and mulling the costly airline ticket he had purchased a day earlier. He also worried about the deal he had just closed with the Society of St. Paul to purchase the rights to the life story of the Rev. Gabriele Amorth — the late Pauline priest known as “the James Bond of exorcists.”
Siebert, who teaches film at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and runs the college’s film production company, had no motion picture credits to his name and wondered at the time: “What have I gone and done?”

Julius Avery’s bucket list is now a little bit shorter.
The Australian director behind The Pope’s Exorcist has wanted to work with the New Zealand-born, Australian-raised Russell Crowe since he first saw the actor’s breakout performance in Romper Stomper (1992). The Australian drama earned Crowe the attention of Hollywood, and he’s since gone on to have a storied career that includes an Oscar win for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator (2001).
Crowe’s latest role as Father Gabriele Amorth in Avery’s The Pope’s Exorcist is based on the real Father Amorth’s memoirs that chronicle his time as the Chief Exorcist to the Vatican. But similar to James Wan’s The Conjuring franchise, Avery merely used real life as a jumping-off point for his heightened genre picture about a young boy’s possession.

As a landmark of Paris and the world's most visited art museum — with over 10 million annual visitors before the pandemic, according to the BBC — the Louvre has been featured in a number of Hollywood films. In 2005, for instance, museum officials reluctantly allowed the makers of "The Da Vinci Code" to shoot inside the Louvre, with the movie adapting a scene from Dan Brown's bestselling book where symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) walks into a grisly murder scene with a body posed like Leonardo Da Vinci's "The Vitruvian Man." More recently, in 2017, the opening scene of "Wonder Woman" showed Gal Gadot's heroine strolling past the glass pyramid in the Louvre's main courtyard and into the museum.

Ron Howard's "The Da Vinci Code" has not aged very well; even franchise star and all-around nice guy Tom Hanks hasn't had many nice things to say about it over the years. However, every movie series has its fandom, and "The Da Vinci Code" is no different. The follows Robert Langdon, a professor of religious symbology, who is a suspect in the murder of a Louvre curator and ends up searching for the Holy Grail alongside police cryptographer Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou). Based on Dan Brown's best-selling book, "The Da Vinci Code" grossed 760 million worldwide on a 125 million dollar budget, which apparently justified the existence of two less successful sequels, "Angels & Demons" and "Inferno." We may not have the fondest memory of those films, but at least it seems like Hanks had fun on set filming the religious mystery thriller.

Gervais was once approached to star in the 2006 commercial hit film The Da Vinci Code directed by Ron Howard. It starred veteran actor Tom Hanks, and was based on the 2003 novel of the same name.
Gervais was supposed to play a butler in the feature, which was a role that eventually went to actor Jean-Yves Berteloot. But Gervais thought it wise to avoid the film for Howard’s sake.
