A new image from Dangerous Animals showcases Jai Courtney's terrifying character in the 2025 shark thriller. The upcoming Australian movie features the Suicide Squad star as Tucker, a serial killer who kidnaps young surfer Zephyr (Yellowstone's Hassie Harrison) with designs on feeding her to sharks. It was directed by Sean Byrne from a screenplay by Nick Lepard (Keeper) and also stars Josh Heuston and Ella Newton.
ScreenRant can now share an exclusive first-look image from Dangerous Animals ahead of its United States theatrical release date on June 6. The image shows Tucker wearing nothing but red underwear and an open robe that exposes his torso, which bears a scar from what appears to be a shark bite. In 2010, I was probably really sad. I’m okay now (promise), but as a closeted kid firmly in the throes of high school, life wasn’t easy. Luckily, I’d started working and had enough month-to-month to support not only my physical Netflix subscription, but the new, fancy streaming option, too. It’s easy to forget, but 2010 Netflix streaming wasn’t anything like it is now. Options were scarce, though in terms of finding myself in horror, there was enough between the two subscriptions to introduce me to an entirely new world of genre voices I’d never encountered before.
I certainly hope your 2010 was better, but whether it was good, bad, or a bonafide nightmare, here are some of the best of what 2010 horror had to offer you’ve likely forgotten about. Even better? They’re all currently streaming online.
Trollhunter (dir. Andre Øvredal)
Where to stream: Max
Horror fans undoubtedly know André Øvredal.

Some people love to say that physical media is dying, but those people are toxic and should be cut out of your life. Physical media is more awesome than ever, and we're here to celebrate the new 4K UHDs, Blu-rays, and DVDs making their way into the world. Now join us as we explore... Arow Video's new 4K Uhd release of Renny Harlin's Deep Blue Sea! Shark movies are a breed of their own. Ever since Steven Spielberg turned many people off beach holidays, filmmakers have constantly attempted to keep the fear of sharks alive, with varying results. From the simple premise of Open Water, to the bonkers insanity of Sharknado and its many sequels, spinoffs and ripoffs, there is no denying that shark movies have their own place in the world. Now Frozen (not that one) and Hatchet director Adam Green is about to make everyone afraid to go to a wedding.
As reported by Deadline, The Ascent is described as following “a group of friends who arrive in Europe for a glamorous but daring destination wedding. The fun and games turn into a nightmare when they find themselves precariously suspended above shark-infested waters and in a battle for survival.” All sounds plausible and standard stuff, right?

So many of us love shark movies, but as fun as the subgenre can be, there is one problem they can't get past: they're all chasing the shadow of Steven Spielberg's Jaws, which is not only the best shark-centered movie ever made, but one of the most popular and best movies, no matter the genre. There have been a plethora of shark related films over the decades, but a lot don't even try to be like Jaws, and instead go the schlocky route. There are a few who sometimes get it right. Open Water was absolutely terrifying, and The Shallows was a great thrill ride. In 2017, 47 Meters Down, starring Mandy Moore and Claire Holt, was a fun surprise, with the scary premise of two divers stuck in a cage on the ocean floor while surrounded by great whites.

2003's Open Water shark movie is based on actual events surrounding the disappearance of an American couple scuba diving in the shark-infested waters around the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland, Australia. The movie was written and directed by Chris Kentis, and produced by Kentis' wife Laura Lau — both avid divers. The couple shot the film over the span of two years, and they funded the project with $130,000 of their own money. The movie became a sleeper hit, upended the Killer Shark genre, and went on to earn over $54 million worldwide.
The Open Water shark movie tells the terrifying story of a couple, Daniel Kintner (Daniel Travis) and Susan Watkins (Blanchard Ryan), who go on a diving expedition and find themselves stranded 20 miles offshore. The BBC has landed on what it hopes will be its next big adaptation, a TV series version of Caleb Azumah Nelson’s buzzy debut Open Water, while drama boss Lindsay Salt has outlined ambitions for a new crime show that “tests the boundaries.”
Open Water follows Marcus and Effie. From the moment they meet, they feel an immediate, undeniable connection. But, as Marcus soon learns, Effie is in a relationship with Marcus’ friend Samuel. It’s a boundary that Marcus is unwilling to cross, but a shared project, photographing and documenting Black creatives in London, draws them into each other’s orbit.
Banijay-backed Mam Tor, which is also producing Richard Gadd’s next project, is making the series alongside Newen Studios-backed B-Side Productions, with Nelson serving as the drama’s lead writer, director and executive producer. 2014's Backcountry is a survival horror movie that actually has its roots in a true story that happened a decade earlier. The woods have always been an ideal setting for horror movies and Backcountry makes the isolated wilderness terrifying without even a single witch, headless girlfriend, or kid killing themselves all over someone's property. Starring Missy Peregrym and Jeff Roop, and few other actors, Backcountry follows a couple, Alex (Roop) and Jen (Peregrym), who go backpacking in an isolated wilderness. There they attempt to repair what begins to feel like a waning relationship.
As they hike deeper, Alex soon reveals that he and Jen are lost in the woods, and he doesn't know how to get out. Worse, they see signs that a bear is stalking them, a bear they come face-to-face with when it finds their tent. Backcountry is a startling and atmospheric horror film that pulls no punches...

Open Water, which has a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, is getting a new streaming home starting in December. The shark horror film, which is loosely based on a true story, was released in 2004, but starting on Dec. 1, it can be streamed for free on Tubi.
Open Water stars Blanchard Ryan as Susan Watkins and Daniel Travis as Daniel Kinter, scuba divers who accidentally are stranded in shark-infested waters after their tour boat leaves them. The abandoned couple must contend with sharks and other marine creatures as they struggle to stay alive in the cold ocean.
Cbr named the film one of the 10 Must-Watch Horror Movies Set at Sea, and called it an example of minimalist filmmaking done correctly. In the movie, the majority of the time is centered around the couple, adrift in the ocean. However, it stands out from other shark films because of its use of real-life sharks in its production.

Something in the Water opens with an attack in a London subway station. Not by a shark on its way to visit relatives at the aquarium, but by a group of homophobes who take objection to Meg and Kayla daring to hold hands in public. It leaves Meg with mental and physical scars, as well as causing the pair to break up.
A year later, Lizzie and Dominic are getting married at a Caribbean resort, reuniting several old friends including Dominic’s sister Cam, Ruth and, much to each other’s dismay, Kayla and Meg. Now that everyone is here, they just need to do something stupid so they can become shark bait. Cam takes care of that by suggesting they all pile into a small motorboat...

The summer horror movie subgenre spoils us all with an embarrassment of riches, but this also means that whenever people come up with a list of recommendations, the same players make an appearance again and again. At this point, you shouldn't need an online list to tell you that "Jaws" is the ultimate July 4th viewing experience. And considering that "Midsommar," "Summer of '84," and "I Know What You Did Last Summer" have the season in the title of the movie, these are also no-brainer suggestions for summer horror movies. Summer is also the season for summer camp movies, so "Sleepaway Camp," the entire "Friday the 13th" franchise, parodies like "The Final Girls," homages like "Fear Street: 1978," and the entire roster of Cabin in the Woods horror movies are all easy picks.
Then there are the countless folk horror films in the vein of "The Wicker Man" that all scream "summer,...

Of the millions of choices available to watch, why do audiences turn to horror movies? The psychology behind the draw of fear is fascinating; however, there are just some installments in the genre that are too realistic for even the most seasoned horror fan, true-crime fanatic, or psychological seeker. What is it about films like The Conjuring, with its foundation in the real-life Warren Cases, or Open Water, loosely based on a true story, that have the power to draw audiences in while pushing them away?...

“You brought us to shark-infested waters the day before my wedding!” shouts Manchester bride-to-be-Lizzie (Lauren Lyle), having seen one of her party chomped on by an ocean apex predator.
Closer to the intimate, lo-fi thrills of Open Water and 47 Metres Down than the high seas camp of Deep Blue Sea and The Meg, director Hayley Easton Street’s debut feature is essentially Bridezilla vs Jaws, as a gang of gal pals, partying in the Caribbean for a destination wedding, are left stranded by not enough life jackets, one float and a leaky boat as Mr. Shark comes a-calling. The result lacks surprises, feels very familiar, perhaps working best as a cautionary tale for the kind of self-absorbed people who force their friends to pony up for ridiculously expensive nuptials abroad.

I don't know about you, but I have a weird fascination and sheer fear of the ocean. The sight of open water, particularly at night when the horizon isn't visible you can't see where the ocean ends and the sky begins, it's utterly terrifying, yet there is an alluring sight of mystery and wonder. It is easy to see why so many horror movies feature underwater scenes, because as a setting it is dark and full of terrors.
One of the ocean-based films that made the biggest impact on me was not "Jaws," but rather the 2003 survival horror thriller "Open Water." Written and directed by Chris Kentis, the film follows an American couple scuba diving while on vacation, in a trip meant to improve their relationship. While diving, they briefly separate from the rest of their tour group, miss the head count, and are accidentally left stranded at sea.

Stephen King's unexpected endorsement of Netflix's "Under Paris" reveals its quality surpasses other recent shark horror films. King's review of the film highlights its balance of realism, making it more terrifying than typical killer shark flicks in recent years. With King's stamp of approval and a potential for a sequel, Netflix should seriously consider expanding the world of "Under Paris."
Stephen King's review for a new Netflix horror movie reveals why it is a streaming hit despite having a Rotten Tomatoes score of 64%. Since Stephen King has written over 60 novels in his writing career and is still consistently expanding his horror empire, he is obviously best known for his long line of work as an author and contributions to the horror genre. However, in recent years, the author has also gained some credibility as a movie critic, thanks to his viral social media reviews of popular movies and shows.

Arriving before House of the Dragon season 2 is another story of a fraught succession. Ren Faire, a documentary series about an ailing king retiring from the country’s largest renaissance festival, premieres on June 2. Other TV options this month include Julio Torres comedy Fantasmas on June 7 and docuseries One South: Portrait of a Psych Unit on June 25.
Max plays host to a couple of major movies in June as well. The...

Just as Max had a major addition in May with Dune: Part Two, it has a major attention-grabber in June with House of the Dragon's second season. And that's not to mention the docuseries Taylor Swift vs. Scooter Braun: Bad Blood hitting the streamer on the 21st, which is sure to attract a ton of viewers. But what about movies?
As usual, most new movies hitting Max do so on the first of the month. But, there are a few extra additions peppered throughout the remainder. From a classic vampire movie and a Chronicles of Narnia sequel to the Open Water and Paul Blart movies, there's a wide assortment hitting Max in June 2024. Let's start with a few big ones.

Queen Latifah expresses openness to making a sequel to the 2004 movie Taxi, which she starred in alongside Jimmy Fallon. Despite receiving poor reviews, Taxi was a commercial success, grossing $71.2 million against its $25 million budget. The possibility of Taxi 2 likely depends on Jimmy Fallon's schedule, as he has largely stepped away from scripted performances in recent years.
Queen Latifah has shared that she would consider making a Taxi sequel. The 2004 action-comedy movie starred Latifah as taxi driver Belle Williams, who gets mixed up in a high-octane adventure when she picks up Detective Andrew Washburn (Jimmy Fallon) and ends up helping him solve bank robberies. The movie was critically panned and currently stands at 9% on Rotten Tomatoes and 27 out of 100 on Metacritic.

The poster for No Way Up says that it’s from the executive producers of the 47 Meters Down series. That’s not a good sign because it means it’s from the money men behind those films, not the writers, directors or any of the creative types. This time around, they’ve decided to offer their finny cash cows an all-you-can-eat buffet and, taking a cue from Airport 77, they’ve crashed an airliner into the Pacific. That leaves the survivors trapped on the ocean floor in a rapidly shrinking air pocket and surrounded by sharks.
As No Way Up starts things are already looking bad for Jed and Kyle. Kyle’s date for their trip to Cabo backed out at the last minute.

Elizabeth Olsen had nightmares while filming the 2011 independent horror film Silent House. "We incorporate one [of my dreams] into the film," she told IndieWire. "It was really, really disturbing." For multiple reasons, it's easy to see why. Silent House, based on the 2010 Uruguayan film La Casa Muda by director Gustavo Hernández, executes its stylistic premise too well to be dubbed "just a gimmick movie." Filmmakers Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, the married couple behind 2003's terrifying survival horror Open Water, filmed their low-budget sophomore movie in the vein of Alfred Hitchcock's Rope: a narrative stylized as one continuous shot. Spoiler: the experiment works. Kentis and Lau understand the language of film, the horror genre, and how both elements intersect, and use that acumen to their maximum — if wisely restrained when necessary — advantage. Silent House's real-time style compliments and enhances its story, especially in an era that was already reaching peak found footage oversaturation.

The action-thriller Megalodon: The Frenzy is a film directed by Brendan Petrizzo. The cast includes Caroline Williams, Eric Roberts, Jessica Chancellor, and others who have helped in the proper execution of the film. The attack of the supposedly extinct sharks, the Megalodons, take the lives of many across California and wreck severe damage on some ships and submarines. After sustaining damage, the naval ships U.S.S. King and U.S.S. Fragasso manage to protect Cratus, a research submarine and help it escape. The movie seems to have drawn inspiration from films like The Meg, Jaws, Open Water. Shark Night, and others. Replete with thrills and action, the movie is bound to keep the audience glued to their seats till the end. Will the Cratus be able to manage its way past the lurking dangers under the depths of the ocean? Let us find out!

While true stories are generally the realm of prestigious drama movies, some have also served as the inspiration for a surprising number of iconic horror movies. Cinema has been obsessed with dramatizations of real events since the earliest days of the medium. But in the cases of most, their real-life connections are made plain in the movies themselves.
With some, though, their inspiration is much less obvious, particularly when it comes to horror. Due to the subject material, which often involves ghost and demons, their historical connections are easy to miss, especially when they don't seem to be based in reality. It’s worth examining how a relationship to a real-life event colors a horror film and how it compares with the true story that inspired it.

No study of film is complete without the inclusion of the shark. Cinema has long told stories of man’s eternal battle with monsters, real or otherwise. Yet over the decades, no animal has endured so thoroughly as that on-screen nemesis like the humble shark. There’s always time for a shark movie, including this summer with the release of Ben Wheatley’s Meg 2. Indeed, our very (mis)understanding of the creature is rooted in its movie history. Film has an incredible ability to reimagine the world around us, but its eternal insistence on turning the shark into a merciless killing machine for midnight movie scares has left a permanent, major scar. And it’s almost entirely thanks to one movie that not only changed Hollywood forever but left sharks with a serious case of bad PR.

Around this time every year, I tend to enjoy putting on Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. In this household it’s as annual a hallmark of summer as warm breezes, smoking meat on the barbecue, and blasts of chlorine water. However, it is too easy to fall into the trap of thinking Spielberg had the first and last word in the sounds of shrieking at the beach.
In truth, there are many great summertime chillers that make your blood run cold, and the sand turn to ice between your toes, no matter how hot the temperature is. Hence why we here at Den of Geek have put our heads together to figure what are the absolute best beachside horror movies (other than the obvious one) that will make you a “lake person” for the rest of your life. Enjoy!

A cursed megalodon shark is no laughing matter, as seen in an exclusive The Black Demon clip. Helmed by Rambo: Last Blood's Adrian Grunberg, the horror-thriller centers on an oilman who takes his family on a vacation to visit a rig in Baja, only to discover it's currently under constant attack from a ferocious megalodon shark. Yellowstone's Josh Lucas leads the cast of The Black Demon alongside Fernanda Urrejola, Julio Cesar Cedillo, Venus Ariel, and Héctor Jiménez.
Oilman Paul Sturges' (Lucas) idyllic family vacation turns into a nightmare when they encounter a ferocious megalodon shark that will stop at nothing to protect its territory. Stranded and under constant attack, Paul and his family must somehow find a way to get his family back to shore alive before it strikes again in this epic battle between humans and nature.

The horrors of our reality have produced a number of films based on those events. The Amityville Horror, Open Water, Zodiac, and Fire in the Sky are just a few that aim to be close to accurate representations of true and supposedly true stories. While those are some good examples, the number of great horror movies that are more grounded in their source material are limited. It's a struggle for a filmmaker to make a film that's entirely based on a true story, because it requires them to be stuck in those constraints. They have to keep the plot focused on what really happened, without going off in their own dramatic direction.

Survival horror Fall (which is now on Netflix UK) sees two extreme sports enthusiasts climb up a 2000 foot tower in the middle of the desert and get stuck at the top. It’s high-concept in every sense as the two women teeter on a tiny ledge impossibly high up while the audience feel (pleasantly?) sick and anxious the whole time.
Fall is effective and efficient. The girls are likeable, capable and make good choices (other than climbing up a 2000 foot tower in the first place…). There’s real peril, enough back story to round the characters out, but ultimately it’s girls vs tower, with some pesky buzzards thrown in for good measure. This kind of survival horror – and by that in this instance we mean a film where characters are pitted against nature or a circumstance, rather than a person, or a supernatural entity – works viscerally when it’s done well.

Prime Video has no shortage of shows or movies arriving in September. The biggest new show on the block for Amazon Studios is “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” which is a prequel based on the work of J.R.R. Tolkien that’s set thousands of years before the events of “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings.” Several new 2022 films will be available on the streamer as well: including Channing Tatum’s “Dog,” Michael Bay’s “Ambulance,” Zac Efron’s “Firestarter,” Dylan O’Brien’s “The Outfit,” and more.
Noteworthy library titles arriving this month include “Fight Club” (1999), “Legally Blonde” (2001) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991).

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).
Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

“Fall” is a very good “don’t look down” movie. It’s a fun, occasionally cheesy, but mostly ingeniously made thriller about two daredevil climbers, Becky (Grace Caroline Currey) and Hunter (Virginia Gardner), who decide to scale the B67 TV tower — an abandoned 2,049-foot communication tower that juts up in the middle of the California desert, 23 miles from Sacramento. It’s an actual structure, like the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the skyscraper that became the pedestal for Tom Cruise’s you-are-there stunt sequences in “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.” And if, like me, you loved that movie in part because of how deviously it toyed with your fear of heights, “Fall” is likely to hit you as an irresistible piece of vertigo porn. It’s for anyone who ate up “Ghost Protocol,” as well as the awesome rock-climbing documentaries “Free Solo” and “The Dawn Wall,” and wants to continue that shivery vicarious high.

The most beautiful thing about horror movies is that there's always something for everyone, no matter what keeps you up at night. Scared of clowns? Pennywise is here to give you nightmares. Creeped out by the supernatural? Good news, there's like, a million ghost movies. Just about every phobia that exists has been reflected in some way in a horror movie, but the apparent sadists at Lionsgate are taking acrophobia, or the phobia of heights, to an entirely new level with "Fall." The survival horror film follows a similar scenario as seen in films like "Open Water," Adam Green's "Frozen," or "47...

Seriously?] as Jaelyn who, along with her husband Kyle (James Tupper) are on holiday in Vietnam following Jaelyn’s miscarriage. Of course, being a shark movie we know things aren’t going to go according to plan for the couple. Kyle gets injured whilst swimming, his blood pouring into the ocean waters like some sort of obvious foreshadowing, whilst Jaelyn has flashbacks to her miscarriage.
