After getting off to a shaky start, David Duchovny’s second directorial feature Bucky F*cking Dent delivers some hard truths and profound wisdom against the backdrop of a 1978 Red Sox-Yankees American League East pennant game. Adapted from Duchovny’s book of the same name, his follow-up to 2004’s House of D finds Teddy (Logan Marshall-Green), an aspiring novelist and Yankees peanut vendor, returning home to visit his estranged, dying father Marty (Duchovny). His work is rejected by a literacy agent who encourages him to commit a crime, go to prison, and write about it––otherwise he’s just another uninteresting voice in changing times. Fresh from a divorce, the shaggy-haired Teddy is going through an awkward phase, stuck in a profound rut. His dad comments that despite being 33 his son looks both younger and older than he is.

“Reverse the Curse,” the second movie written and directed by David Duchovny, is based on Duchovny’s 2016 novel “Bucky F*cking Dent,” and whether or not the story is autobiographical, it feels autobiographical, and I mean that as a compliment. Set in the summer of 1978, it’s framed around one man’s obsession with the Boston Red Sox — meaning, of course, the curse of the Bambino, going back to 1918, the last time (until 2004) the Sox won the championship.
The man is Ted Fulilove, which is a terrible last name for a movie character, though he’s played by Duchovny as a cussed crab apple with an amusing misanthropic put-down for every occasion (like: “Closure’s for morons”). “Reverse the Curse” has a handful of characters, but it’s essentially a father-son two-hander — one of those dramadies in which the dad is a heartless-on-the-surface coot who was no good when it came...

For his sophomore feature, the follow-up to 2004’s little-seen indie House of D, David Duchovny serves up a similarly niche confection, a sometimes-zany black comedy based on his 2016 novel of the same name. The elevator pitch is a tough one; though it’s funny in places, the tone is all over the place, one minute aspiring for the arch, stoner laughs of PTA’s Inherent Vice, the next veering into straightforward sentiment with a rambling final section that hits a similar highway to the 2006 Sundance hit Little Miss Sunshine. There’s also the f-word: the looming curse of American baseball movies that don’t have the word Field in the title, which could hamper its commercial prospects in the wider world.
The setting is 1978, and Yankee Stadium peanut vendor Ted Fullilove (Logan Marshall-Green) has finally finished his novel, the weighty Magnum Opie. He thinks it’s a masterpiece, but his...

For a movie with an expletive in its title, Bucky F*cking Dent sure displays a sentimental streak.
In David Duchovny’s film based on his well-received 2016 novel, a dying, and diehard, Red Sox fan is comforted by his son and friends who make up stories about imaginary victories — and even periodically use a garden hose and sound effects replicating a thunderstorm to make him think that certain games have been rained out. It’s like a modern-day version of the classic O. Henry story “The Last Leaf.”
Fortunately, the film, receiving its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, also features enough caustic, irreverent humor to make its soppier aspects more palatable. Representing Duchovny’s first feature directorial effort since 2004’s House of D, it provides an excellent showcase for the actor’s particular brand of deadpan comedy as the sort of cranky, wisecracking guy who pretends to be taking his last breath,...

It’s been awhile since the world has seen a new comedy from Greg Daniels, co-creator of The Office (U.S.) and Parks and Recreation. That all changes this month with Amazon Prime’s new releases for May 2020. That’s right, leading the pack of Amazon originals on May 1 is Daniels’ Upload, a comedy about digital afterlives. That should inject a healthy dose of sci-fi “middletopia” into our lives.
Also premiering in May is the second season of Amazon Prime’s twisty drama Homecoming. This season starts Janelle Monáe and premieres on May 22. After that, the rest of Amazon’s originals this month are fairly film-centric. The Goldfinch, Seberg, and The Vast of Night are the notable original films arriving in May.

There are few surefire successes in television. It just so happens that with its new releases for May 2020, Hulu almost certainly found itself one. May 8 sees the debut of all eight episodes of Solar Opposites, the latest sci-fi animated effort from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland. This is a brand new story featuring a family of aliens crashing to Earth and learning to live amongst the rest of us weirdos. But the animation style and sci-fi themes hew so closely to Rick and Morty that there’s no way this won’t be a hit.
On the off chance Solar Opposites doesn’t set the world ablaze, Hulu has some other intriguing content lottery tickets for May. The Great premieres on May 15 and is a comedic period piece about Catherine the Great starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. You can’t accuse Hulu of not taking big swings this month!

Star Trek: Discovery delivers a full-scale battle scene with incredible moments in episode 2. Spoilers and geeky spots in our review...
This review contains spoilers.
See related Designated Survivor: a show well worth checking out
1.2 Battle At The Binary Star
For obvious reasons, episode 1 was all about setup and introductions - introducing the characters, the threat, the world they inhabit - and episode 2 was all about knocking that down. Because it turns out, we weren't watching the start of a new Star Trek series so much as the traumatic backstory that precedes it. Normally, someone would say "this officer was the best! But they screwed up and got thrown in jail. Now we're pulling them out of retirement to go on one more mission!" and possibly describe some effects-heavy sequences. But this time, we actually get to see it! And feel it!
And man, do we feel it.

Update: The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee actor Anton Yelchin was driving at the time of his fatal accident was under recall, The Associated Press reports. The SUV's gear shifters reportedly confused drivers and caused vehicles to roll unexpectedly.
On Monday, Jeep auto-maker Fiat Chrysler said in a statement that the company is investigating and that it's premature to speculate on the crash cause. The 2015 Grand Cherokees were included in Fiat Chrysler's global recall of 1.1 million vehicles announced in April. A Los Angeles coroner's official has stated that Yelchin's death has been ruled an accident.

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in October 2018.
You may or may have not noticed it but HBO's horror options have gotten pretty grim. Not grim as in scary but grim as in incredibly sparse.
Thankfully the cavalry is arriving in HBO New Releases for October 2018. This is a company that wisely realizes the importance of scary movies around Halloween time. 18 scary movies are coming to HBO Now and HBO Go streams this October. Cool! The catch is that they'll all be gone by month's end. Not cool! Oh well, it's better than nothing. The Descent will also be arriving at the beginning of the month for a much longer stay.
In terms of non-horror programming, HBO has plenty to offer in October. Recent favorites The Post and Game Night make their debut while slightly older classics Dances with Wolves,...

Robin is believed to have committed suicide via asphyxiation, according to the Marin County Coroner's office, following a battle with depression.
The actor, who has struggled with alcohol and drugs in the past, checked into a rehab centre earlier this summer to make sure he would not relapse.
Zelda recently celebrated her 25th birthday, which Robin marked with an Instagram post two weeks ago. The photo of the pair in their earlier years was the last Robin posted.
At the age of 15, Zelda appeared alongside her father in the 2004 drama House of D.

Petrified, nervous, insecure, scared … None of these are words fans of Erykah Badu would associate with the neo-soul songstress, whose captivating musical stylings seem unflappable and effortless.
But they're all various ways Badu describes her experience making "Re:Generation," a fascinating new Grammys-produced music doc that pits five producers (Mark Ronson, DJ Premier, Skrillex, Pretty Lights and The Crystal Method) with the task of dabbling in five extrinsic genres (jazz, classical, rock, country and soul, respectively).
Badu, along with Yasiin Bey (a.k.a. Mos Def), Trombone Shorty, Zigaboo and more, were recruited for Ronson's jazz squad, where they had just hours to conceive a track for a performance that night. The celebrated crooner gives us a candid take on her "Re:Generation" encounter, delayed acting career and more.
So how did you get involved in "Re:Generation"?
They asked me to do it. And I said "Hell yeah," because it's an honor to be amongst Mark Ronson,...

Actor David Duchovny has finally made peace with a movie critic who slated his directorial debut five years ago.
The actor has held a grudge against TV personality and film critic Richard Roeper ever since he gave 2004 film House of D - which Duchovny wrote, directed and starred in - a thumbs down.
So when the actor heard his appearance on Monday's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno would be followed by the critic, he took the opportunity to settle their score.
Before Roeper took his seat, Duchovny pulled a note out of his pocket, and read the write-up: "Duchovny has a masters of literature from Yale, but House of D feels like a freshman writing exercise," telling Leno, "If you don't mind I'll stay for this interview... I've been holding onto that for five years."
But when Roeper came out and praised the star's hit TV show Californication, Duchovny agreed to end the feud, telling the critic, "Richard, all is forgiven."...

NEW YORK -- Organizers of the Tribeca Film Festival that opened this week welcomed film buyers Thursday at an opening news conference, where festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal said that the growing event is "looking to create a marketplace" while simultaneously creating a scene that is both "a retail and wholesale festival." This year, TFF will display 158 feature-length films and 59 world premieres -- including the debut of Sound Barrier by Iranian director Amir Naderi. Executive director Peter Scarlet cited Barrier as an example of the festival's growing importance. "I'm proud he decided to premiere it here rather than one of those other festivals, whose names I won't mention," he said. Two films in current release -- Paramount Classics' Winter Solstice and Lions Gate's House of D -- were acquired at last year's festival, but Tribeca has yet to discover a film that has gone on to mainstream commercial success, which would earn the fest marketplace clout.

Frank Langella has stepped into the role of Perry White in Bryan Singer's Superman Returns for Warner Bros. Pictures. Hugh Laurie originally was cast in the role but bowed out because of a scheduling conflict with his TV series, House, MD. The series, on which Singer is executive producer, has proved a surprise hit and was just picked up for a second season. Laurie had not yet shot any scenes on the movie, which began production March 21 in Australia. In the Superman canon, White is the editor of the Daily Planet, the newspaper where Superman's alter ego, Clark Kent, works as a journalist. In Singer's version, White has a son named Richard, played by James Marsden, who is Lois Lane's love interest. Langella played Count Dracula in Universal Pictures' 1979 Dracula. His other credits include TV's Unscripted and the features Sweet November and the upcoming House of D. Langella is repped by Peter Strain and Associates.
Richard Lewis' Southpaw Entertainment -- which is prepping for the release of Michael Clancy's Eulogy and David Duchovny's House of D, both from Lions Gate Films -- has signed deals with Kirsten Sheridan to direct August Rush and David Nutter to helm Windsor Road for the company. Oscar-nominated writer-director Sheridan, daughter of Jim Sheridan, will helm Rush, which is based on an idea conceived by Lewis and described as a modern-day fairy tale about an orphaned musical prodigy who tries to find his parents through their shared musical gifts. Lewis hatched the idea at the hospital when his wife gave birth to their son, who immediately showed an affinity for music. "It will be a musical without people breaking into song," he said. "Music is definitely the lead character in the film. Music is a part of my lifeblood."...

Tea Leoni is going to be having some Fun With Dick and Jane. The actress is in negotiations to take the place of Cameron Diaz, who had originally been cast in the Columbia Pictures project but is now stepping aside because of a scheduling conflict arising from a change of dates. Leoni will play the role of Jane in the remake of the 1977 comedy, which has been updated to revolve around a spokesman for a big company who finds himself jobless and an outcast following some dodgy extracurricular activities. In the original film, Jane Fonda and George Segal played an upper-middle-class couple that turned to pulling heists to pay their bills. Brian Grazer is producing for Imagine Entertainment. Leoni recently completed Spanglish for Columbia and director James L. Brooks. Her credits include House of D, in which she co-starred with husband David Duchovny. Leoni is repped by UTA, Mosaic Media and attorney Barry Hirsch.

David Duchovny's directorial debut has landed at Lions Gate Films, sources said. The indie outfit is working on a deal to acquire all North American distribution rights to the coming-of-age tale House of D, which recently had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. Produced by Richard Lewis, Jane Rosenthal and Bob Yari, the film stars Duchovny alongside wife Tea Leoni, Robin Williams, Zelda Williams, Anton Yelchin and Erykah Badu. House of D is described as an emotional fable about New York and the power of friendship. It tells the multilayered story of Tommy (Duchovny), a man who is coming to terms with his past and his present and resolving his relationships with the people who helped make him who he is. Much of the story is told through flashbacks with Robin Williams playing a janitor and best friend of the younger Tommy (Yelchin) and Leoni starring as Tommy's mother. Lions Gate will likely release the film this fall, sources said. Lewis' Ovation Entertainment financed and produced the film along with Yari's Bob Yari Prods. Duchovny is onscreen in the Universal Pictures romantic musical comedy Connie and Carla opposite Nia Vardalos and Toni Collette.
Zanne Devine has been named president of production at Beacon Pictures, the company said Thursday. Devine, a 15-year veteran of the film production business, will report to CEO Charlie Lyons and chairman Armyan Bernstein. Devine, who executive produced the upcoming film House of D, directed by David Duchovny, has served stints as president of the Kennedy/Marshall Co. and president of production at Ovation Entertainment. She also has held positions as senior vp at Polygram Filmed Entertainment and vp worldwide acquisitions and production at Universal Pictures. Beacon is in the second year of a five-year co-financing and distribution deal with Walt Disney Studios, with plans for a slate of 25 films over the next five years.
Ovation Entertainment and Bob Yari Prods. have teamed to finance and produce David Duchovny's writing and directorial debut, House of D. The X-Files star also will appear in the film alongside stars Tyler Hoechlin (Road to Perdition), Robin Williams and Tea Leoni. House of D is described as an emotional fable about New York and the sweeping power of friendship. It tells the multilayered story of a man coming to terms with his past and his present and resolving his relationships with the people who helped make him who he is. Williams will play the lead character, with much of the story being told through flashbacks to his childhood, where he will be portrayed by Hoechlin.
