While it can occasionally be fun to dive into the origin story of your favorite superhero or see the Muppets as little babies or whatever, a prequel is by definition an unnecessary story. Unlike sequels, which can just keep depicting gripping adventures forever, a prequel takes place before anything interesting happens, otherwise they’d have started the original earlier. That’s especially true for…

Better Call Saul and The Mandalorian star Giancarlo Esposito is known for playing villainous roles to perfection, but he still has yet to reach the "deepest, darkest" part of himself to play a character. One role that would allow him to go to that level is Hannibal Lecter, the fictional cannibal portrayed by Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs.
In a new interview with Empire, Esposito was asked about previous comments he'd made in 2019 about how he'd "fight to the death to play Hannibal Lecter." It's a feeling that still holds true for Esposito, who has since gotten to meet Hopkins personally. While the two didn't speak about the Hannibal character, Esposito feels that Hopkins would approve of him taking on that role. It may not be a project that's actually in the works, though Esposito clarified he's up for it it he were to get the opportunity.

Manhunter, the serial killer thriller by Michael Mann, is streaming for free on both Pluto TV here and on Prime Video here, and it will be moving to Tubi on March 31. Fans of the thriller genre know that this is not only one of the best thrillers of the '80s, but of all time, and introduced many people to the iconic character, Hannibal 'The Cannibal' Lecter. Other titles arriving on Tubi at the end of the month include the Michael Shannon masterpiece Take Shelter, Sarah Polley's recent acclaimed drama Women Talking, and the Best Picture winner The Hurt Locker, among others.
Manhunter follows Will Graham, a retired FBI agent who used to work as a criminal profiler before having a mental breakdown during his pursuit and arrest of Dr. Hannibal Lecktor. Graham's former boss, Jack Crawford, seeks the profiler's help when the Tooth Fairy, a new serial killer on the rise,...

Dr. Hannibal Lecter has been part of our pop-culture consciousness since 1981 when author Thomas Harris invented him in the pages of his psychological horror novel, Red Dragon. Since then, Dr. Lecter's appearances have crisscrossed different mediums, including film and television, turning this serial killer with a taste for human flesh into one of the most memorable villains of the modern-day era.
Most general audiences will know Hannibal Lecter best, thanks to the Academy Award-winning The Silence of the Lambs. Anthony Hopkins took home the Oscar for his incredible performance in that film as the deranged sociopath toying with the young FBI trainee Clarice Starling under the pretense of helping her catch the equally menacing Buffalo Bill. As good as that film unquestionably is, the unique nature of Hannibal Lecter's depravity has led to other successful adaptations.

Everyone loves a good villain. Without scenery-chewing, dastardly antagonists for our heroes to fight, things just aren't much fun. Sometimes villains become cultural icons in their own right, like Michael Meyers from the "Halloween" movies or even Jeremy Irons as Scar in "The Lion King." Of course, one of the greatest villains of them all is Hannibal Lecter. Created by author Thomas Harris, "Hannibal the Cannibal" was the baddie in the novels "Red Dragon" in 1981, "The Silence of the Lambs" in 1988, "Hannibal" in 1999, and "Hannibal Rising" in 2006, and his well-mannered eccentricity and fierce bloodlust makes him as alluring as he is terrifying. These books have since been adapted into several Hannibal Lecter movies and an NBC television series, with four different actors having portrayed the aristocratic Lithuanian serial killer, each with their own unique spin.

Few fictional characters have grabbed the public's attention more than Hannibal Lecter. From the cold and calculating first appearance as portrayed by Brian Cox in Michael Mann's Manhunter to the Academy Award-winning performance of Sir Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal Lecter's impact is virtually unmatched. As with any fictional character with a larger-than-life persona, the public sometimes demands more. As such, author Thomas Harris has kept the character alive in multiple novels, though these have diminished levels of quality, with some not being as captivating as their predecessors. The same can be said regarding the number of films that have emerged since Silence of the Lambs.
From Hannibal, Red Dragon, and Hannibal Rising to the Hannibal television series, something of a double-edged sword has attached itself to the various adaptations. In some regards, Hannibal Lecter's various appearances satisfy the public's love for the anti-hero. However, the...

While the franchise's on-screen future remains unclear, an underrated Hannibal Lecter adaptation is getting a new streaming home. Based on Thomas Harris' four novels centering on the cannibalistic serial killer, the on-screen journey of the character began in 1986's Manhunter, written and directed by Michael Mann and starring Brian Cox as the iconic killer. Primarily based on the first novel, Red Dragon, the movie failed at the box office and initially garnered mixed reviews, but has gone on to be considered a cult classic.
Arguably, the adaptation that put the franchise on the map was the Anthony Hopkins-led The Silence of the Lambs, one of the few horror movies to get Oscars recognition, winning the big five awards while being nominated for an additional two. Hopkins would carry on the role of Lecter with the 2001 sequel Hannibal, which was a commercial hit in spite of its critical dismissal, and the 2002 prequel Red Dragon,...

Released ten years after The Silence of the Lambs, one fateful decision completely ruined any potential Hannibal might have had. The Silence of the Lambs is a cultural milestone in American film and deserves a place as one of the best movies of all time. The film was a critical darling, winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Anthony Hopkins), Best Actress (Jodie Foster), and Best Adapted Screenplay, at the 64th Academy Awards, one of only three films to win the coveted "Big Five" awards.
It's easy to look back fondly on The Silence of the Lambs and how important it was to the film industry as a whole. It's also easy to think of it as one of the best horror films of all time, despite not necessarily being a horror film in the purest sense, with some of the best tension and atmosphere in any movie. Peacock subscribers will soon be able to witness Anthony Hopkins' final turn as Hannibal Lecter. Red Dragon, based on the 1981 novel of the same name by Thomas Harris, is heading to the streaming service this January.
Directed by Brett Ratner, Red Dragon is a prequel to 1991's The Silence of the Lambs and features the final performance of Hopkins as cannibal serial killer Hannibal Lecter. The movie will become available to stream on Peacock beginning Jan. 1. Released in 2002, the psychological thriller sees FBI agent Will Graham (played by Edward Norton) enlisting the help of serial killer Hannibal Lecter to catch another killer, Francis Dolarhyde (Ralph Fiennes). Although not as critically acclaimed as The Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon — which was penned by Silence screenwriter Ted Tally — was seen as an improvement over 2001's Hannibal. The prequel was also a box office success, grossing $209 million worldwide against a $78 million budget.

Hannibal has one banned episode in the United States, and the reason behind it is most likely far from most viewers' first guess. With a blend of horror, drama and crime, the series is known for featuring some of the most jaw-dropping serial crimes in television history. By adopting a kind of storytelling that balances the real and the unreal, the series depicts some very artistic and completely terrifying crimes. With episodes consisting of ritualistic killings and different levels of body mutilations being aired on broadcast networks, it isn't clear at first why an episode would be pulled from the lineup in the U.S.
The ban of Episode 4, "Oeuf," has very little to do with gore. The decision not to have it released to the public in 2013 came from the show's creator, Bryan Fuller himself, who made a last-minute decision. He was uncomfortable with the content of the episode...

There are two kinds of people in the world: People who hate when I start a review by saying there are two kinds of people in the world, and people who don’t read my reviews. The point is there are always dichotomies, and a film like “Wicked” — Jon M. Chu’s two-part adaptation of the popular Broadway musical prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” — makes these dichotomies clear. Fans of the Broadway musical are likely to be enchanted by this epic production. People who are only vaguely aware of it, but have probably at least heard “Defying Gravity” unless they’ve been living in seclusion for two decades, may also find it familiar … and not necessarily in a good way.
Because hey, of course it’s familiar. It’s a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” one of the most culturally ubiquitous works of art to emerge from the 20th century.

When it comes to iconic horror names, the name Hannibal Lecter likely stands as one of the most iconic. Author Thomas Harris wrote four novels about the diabolical cannibal: 1981's Red Dragon, 1988's The Silence of the Lambs, 1999's Hannibal, and 2006's Hannibal Rising. These four novels have served as the basis for five movies based on Hannibal Lecter, along with a TV series many believe to be the best Lecter adaptation.

The Hannibal movies, in order, helped turn the doctor into one of cinema's most charismatic villains, Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Through creepy yet captivating dialogue, viewers get acquainted with his grisly acts of violence, his chilling intellect, and his criminal history. The character was created by author Thomas Harris, and his Hannibal Lecter books have all been adapted into series and movies with confusing timelines. To make matters worse, some actors appeared in multiple Hannibal Lecter movies playing different parts.
The combined popularity of the novels along with Hopkins' Oscar-winning portrayal inspired further onscreen depictions of the cannibal's origins. As more movies and series followed, a breakdown was necessary to understand and separate the release date from the chronological unfolding of events in Hannibal Lecter's life. For fans interested in the series kicked off by The Silence of the Lambs, this is the way to watch the Hannibal Lecter movies in order.

Within the pantheon of legendary cinematic villains, few are as towering as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, who originated as a character in a series of novels written by Thomas Harris. The first film Lecter featured in was an adaptation of the first novel he appeared in: 1986s Manhunter, which was adapted from the 1981 novel Red Dragon. Brian Cox was the first actor to play Lecter (though he was named Lecktor in that film), but it was ultimately Anthony Hopkins who became most well-associated with the role, initially playing Lecter in 1991 and doing so two more times once for a prequel, and once for a sequel in the early 2000s. Since then, Mads Mikkelsen also put his spin on the character during the Hannibal TV series, and Gaspard Ulliel played a younger version of Lecter in 2007s Hannibal Rising.

Sir Anthony Hopkins earned his first Oscar for the role of serial killer Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. Based on the novel by Thomas Harris, it was the last movie to win the ‘Big Five’ awards at the Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Hopkins only had about 16 minutes of screen time.
Hopkins went on to reprise his role in two more films, the sequel Hannibal and the prequel Red Dragon. While the sequel was more commercially successful than the original, the film was not as well-received and the actor himself was reportedly not happy with the film. He also mentioned that one scene in particular on Hannibal was done differently from the book.

We all love a good old forbidden love story, right? Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has been re-conceptualised countless times over the years; from stylish adaptations by Aussie auteurs, traditional period dramas and with, of all things, gnomes. This is just a drop in the vast ocean of movies that have taken on the Bard’s classic tale, and for the third entry in the popular Underworld series, it was time for a flashback to some forbidden Lycan and vampire love. The first Underworld movie had a backstory that explained how vampires and werewolves came to be mortal enemies, thanks to a feud that began between Michael Sheen’s super sexy Lycan, Lucian, and Bill Nighy’s nosferatu vampire Viktor. You see, hairy Lucian had been secretly romancing the fanged bloodsucker’s daughter Sonja, played by Doomsday’s Rhona Mitra. And with that premise, you can probably guess where this threequel is going.

When it comes to psychological horror films, few have achieved the chilling impact and critical acclaim of Anthony Hopkins‘ The Silence of the Lambs. With its gripping narrative and spine-tingling atmosphere, the film has rightfully earned its place among the greatest in cinematic history, earning five Oscars and widespread acclaim.

Yet, amidst the crowd of horror classics, there exists a film that goes beyond mere scares, into the realm of controversy and legal turmoil that few filmmakers dare to tread. Released in 1980, Ruggero Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust seemed too realistic and authentic when it came to the gory scenes that the filmmaker would end up being arrested and charged with murder.

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Hannibal Rising was Written, Narrated, and Edited by Mike Holtz, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Remember that time Rob Zombie, The Weinstein Company, and Dimension Films got hopped up enough to make some bad decisions together and decided “Hey, you know Michael Myers? The character whose mystique is in large part because we don’t know where, how, or why his evil exists? We should make a film explaining that it’s all because his family sucked and his house smelled like old bologna!” I’m paraphrasing a little. Well, just a few months beforehand the same choice, to explain and demystify the background of one of horror’s most mysterious monsters was made for Hannibal Lecter as well. Audiences love a good villain, and one of the tastiest literary and cinematic characters is Hannibal Lecter. The book series, written by Thomas Harris, consists of four entries: Red Dragon (1981), The Silence of the Lambs (1988), Hannibal (1999), and Hannibal Rising (2006). Throughout the decades, various filmmakers and actors have taken a crack at bringing the charismatic and sadistic cannibal to life. Five movies and two TV series later, the characters from Harris's books have received a few adaptations, from Oscar-winning portrayals to films fans would rather forget .

Signature Entertainment has acquired U.K. and Ireland rights to writer-director Warwick Thornton’s Australian drama “The New Boy” from The Veterans.
The film follows a nine-year-old Aboriginal orphan boy who arrives in the dead of night at a remote monastery run by a renegade nun, disturbing the delicately balanced world.
Debutant Aswan Reid leads the film in the titular role, alongside Cate Blanchett, Deborah Mailman (“Sapphires”) and Wayne Blair (“Rams”).
“Inspired by Thornton’s own experience of growing up as an Aboriginal boy in a Christian boarding school, this is ambitious, tonally tricky filmmaking, bringing an unexpected dose of whimsy to social interests more austerely explored in Thornton’s excellent previous features “Samson and Delilah” and “Sweet Country,” Variety critic Guy Lodge said in his review of the film.

Tarak Ben Ammar has big plans for Italy. The Franco-Tunisian film and TV mogul is already a major player in the Italian industry thanks to Eagle Pictures, the production and distribution group he acquired in 2007 that is now Italy’s largest independent distributor due to exclusive distribution deals with Paramount and Sony Pictures for the territory. Ben Ammar joined Tom Cruise on the Rome red carpet for the June 19 world premiere of Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and later introduced Cruise to new Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni. “The meeting [between Cruise and Meloni] was very interesting. The prime minister knows a lot about cinema,” says Ben Ammar about the far-right leader.
Alongside Eagle’s distribution deals, the company has also partnered with Sony to co-produce six films together, including The Equalizer 3, the latest in Antoine Fuqua’s action franchise starring Denzel Washington that was shot entirely in Italy.

Hannibal TV series made a peculiar choice was made not to dig into the backstory of the notorious murderer, Hannibal Lecter.
Mads Mikkelsen recently offered his thoughts on this narrative decision during an interview with GQ. Mikkelsen played the eponymous character on NBC's television adaptation.
The Hannibal TV show, while informed by Thomas Harris's novels, struck out on a distinct trajectory. It gave center stage to the rapport between Hannibal and Will Graham, an FBI profiler, which was the precursor to the events in the books.
Rather than wade into the depths of Hannibal's past or Will's history, the series spotlighted their unique dynamic and the ripple effect of their relationship on their surroundings.
Mikkelsen, during a discussion about his most prominent roles, elaborated on how the showrunners tried to separate his iteration of Hannibal from previous incarnations, chiefly through a deliberate omission of the character's backstory. The...

With it having already largely forged its own branching path from the novels, Mads Mikkelsen has explained why the Hannibal TV show didn't explore the iconic killer's backstory. Mikkelsen co-led the cast of the NBC show as Hannibal Lecter, with the story largely acting as a prequel to Thomas Harris' source novels and exploring Lecter's relationship with FBI profiler Will Graham. Though borrowing elements from the 2006 novel Hannibal Rising, the show generally didn't explore Will or Hannibal's backstories, instead focusing on the origins of their relationship and how it affected those around them.
In honor of his turn in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Mads Mikkelsen sat down with GQ to break down his most iconic characters. While looking at the Hannibal TV show, the actor explained how the creative team sought to set his Lecter depiction apart from previous ones, namely by refusing to explore his backstory,...

Character actor Richard Brake has a lot of success in his career, racking up almost 90 screen credits over the last thirty years. Those credits include roles in Cold Mountain, Batman Begins, Doom, Munich, and Hannibal Rising, so he started getting cast in major productions with some frequency rather early on. But it’s interesting to see how much more prolific he has gotten since playing The Night King in Game of Thrones and Doom-Head in Rob Zombie’s 31. About half of his credits have come just in the seven years since 31 was released. Next up for him is The Gates, where he co-stars with John Rhys-Davies of the Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings franchises (in addition to over 250 other projects). The film is scheduled to receive a digital and VOD release in the US and Canada on June 27th, and a trailer for it can be seen in the embed above.

According to /Film readers, the "Alien" film series is the greatest horror franchise ever. Yes, the xenomorph-starring series certainly has some strong films. However, it's not the most consistent (more on that later), so I disagree. Throughout horror history, sequels, remakes, and reboots have spawned franchises in sub-genres ranging from slashers to the paranormal. No IP is immune to a barrage of iterations. Sometimes, they work. Other times, well ... They leave much to be desired.
Whether we're talking heavy hitters like "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Halloween" or offbeat series such as "The Living Dead," there's always a franchise to gnash your teeth on as a horror fan. Ghoulish monsters, vengeful witches, cannibal serial killers, and disturbed sleep demons decorate our favorite storytelling medium with nightmare fuel. But they're not all created equal.

The legal rights issues surrounding Thomas Harris' Hannibal Lecter series hurt both of its television adaptations: Hannibal and Clarice. Hannibal, created by Bryan Fuller, ran between 2013-15 on NBC. The show, starring Hugh Dancy (Law & Order) as troubled criminal profiler Will Graham and Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) as the titular forensic psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer, adapted three of Thomas Harris' novels: Red Dragon, Hannibal, and the prequel Hannibal Rising. Although the show struggled to find mass appeal, Hannibal gained a passionate cult following over the course of its three seasons for its incredible acting and a strong sense of style.
By contrast, Clarice, created by Jenny Lumet and Alex Kurtzman, ran for a single season on the CBS network in 2021. Although it adapted one of Thomas Harris' most-acclaimed Hannibal Lecter novels, The Silence of the Lambs, Clarice was canceled after a mere 13 episodes. Picking up after trainee FBI Special...

Hugh Dancy is not surprised the oft-rumored Hannibal season 4 has not been greenlit, and his explanation highlights an important point. Hannibal, created by Bryan Fuller, originally ran for three seasons on NBC from 2013 to 2015. Over the course of its run, Hannibal covered three of Thomas Harris' novels: Red Dragon, Hannibal, and prequel Hannibal Rising. Despite critical acclaim and a cult following, NBC canceled the cannibal before Hannibal season 4 could happen due to a large decline in viewership.
Shortly after, Fuller began talks with Netflix and Amazon Prime, the latter of which oversaw the international release of his adaptation of Neil Gaiman's American Gods. Ultimately, nothing came of those discussions. Hannibal's rabid audience and hopeful cast have kept hopes for a continuation of the show alive, but Hugh Dancy doubts Hannibal season 4 can happen in a landscape dominated by streaming platforms. 2022 has seen its fair share of prequels, from the newest Predator film, Prey, to the incredibly popular Minions: Rise Of Gru. Prequels can be an excellent way to help expand upon a story, giving the previous film's events some more context.
On the other hand, some films do not need prequels, which can hinder the previous film's story. Whether through lack of continuity or just lack of reason, some prequels can make audiences feel like they watched something unnecessary. There have been some films that led Redditors to feel this exact way.

This year's Top Gun: Maverick has gone from one success to another, as it has found millions of younger fans as well as recaptured older fans' love of the franchise, and both groups are crossing their fingers for a Top Gun 3. The sequel has achieved what so few others have, which is that it isn't just considered better than its predecessor, but the gap in quality is on a whole other level.
Maverick has a huge 96 on Rotten Tomatoes as opposed to the original movie's rotten 58. Redditors have debated which other sequels have the biggest gaps in quality, whether it's for better or worse. Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller has spoken out against claims that the series was queerbaiting. The story of the sophisticated cannibal killer Hannibal Lecter, which originated in a series of novels by Thomas Harris, has been adapted to the large and small screens multiple times over the years, beginning with the 1986 film Manhunter, where the character was played by Succession's Brian Cox. Hannibal was later portrayed by Anthony Hopkins in the Oscar-winning Silence of the Lambs and its follow-ups Hannibal and Red Dragon, whereupon the role was taken over by Moon Knight's Gaspard Ulliel for 2006's prequel Hannibal Rising.
