Remember Tom Brady? That guy who starred in all those commercials for the Hertz car rental company that show up every time you try to watch something on YouTube? It appears people haven't taken too kindly to Brady mocking Tom Cruise's infamous talk show couch-jumping in those ads, which is valid. I mean, really, there are so many fun ways to mock our Boomer Short King in 2024, and the best you can come up with is a joke that was already tired when the "Scary Movie" franchise did it with "Scary Movie 4" back in 2006?
Brady's antics, along with some previous escapades that apparently involve him playing one of those sportsball games for a living, have since landed him in hot water with none other than "Lift" actor Kevin Hart. Gen X's own Short King is now set to host "The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady," a...

Over ten years since the forgettable Scary Movie 5, we’re now getting Scary Movie 6, which is arriving in 2025. More here.
Infamously taking the original title intended for the first Scream film, the spoof Scary Movie arrived in cinemas all the way back in the summer of 2000, and promptly outgrossed the film that it was basically taking the piss out of. Along with its first sequel, that arrived a year later, it was directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans, and the modestly-costed films returned sizeable profits.
Not that they were much cop after the first film. David Zucker took over for Scary Movie 3 and Scary Movie 4, in 2003 and 2006 respectively, and both in truth veer on the ‘best forgotten’ side. It took seven more years before we got Scary Movie 5, with Malcolm D Lee this time directing, and the quality of that film seemed to have driven the franchise into the ground for good.

Eleven years have gone by since the release of a new entry in the Scary Movie horror parody series – but the franchise isn’t going to remain dormant for much longer. Deadline reports that the Miramax label at Paramount, which is now operating under new boss Jonathan Glickman, has given the greenlight to a new Scary Movie sequel, with the plan being to get the film into theatres sometime in 2025. If any writers or a director are attached to the project, they weren’t named in this announcement.
Directed by In Living Color creator Keenen Ivory Wayans from a screenplay written by a bunch of people, the first Scary Movie was released by Dimension Films back in 2000. Scary Movie 2 was released in 2001, and the Wayans remained at the head of the creative team for that one. Fun trivia: one of the working titles for Wes Craven's 1996 slasher satire "Scream" was "Scary Movie." Filmmaker Keenan Ivory Wayans got wind of this trivia, and decided in 2000 to make a film called "Scary Movie" intended to satirize the popularity of "Scream." The late 1990s were a curious time in popular culture, as there weren't too many dominant horror trends. Popular music was beginning to comment on its own self-awareness (see: "Flagpole Sitta") and irony became ironic. Self-reflection went from a healthy Socratic exercise into a loop of eternal recurrence. By 2000, we became so busy commenting on our own commentaries, that it was hard to see where we started. This is where "Scary Movie" dropped in.
Make no mistake, "Scary Movie" is unfunny, as are its many sequels. They're cheap, homophobic, and vulgar. Wayans took his model from spoof filmmakers like Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker, but aimed to make something...

Hallmark Channel has gone country. The network’s new rodeo-focused drama Ride is airing on Sunday nights. The show follows the McMurrays, a Colorado ranching family. They are fighting to hold on to their land while also moving forward after the shocking death of one of their own.
The Ride cast includes Nancy Travis as family matriarch Isabel McMurray, Tiera Skovbye as Isabel’s widowed daughter-in-law Missy, and Beau Mirchoff as her second son, Cash.

February is the shortest month of the year but Prime Video is paying that no mind with its jam-packed list of new releases for February 2023.
This really is an uncommonly stuffed month on the Amazon streamer and it all starts with a handful of Amazon Originals. Amazon’s original offerings kick off with the release of Dave Franco-directed romcom Somebody I Used to Know on Feb. 10. That is followed by Carnival Row season 2 – a gritty fantasy crime drama is set in a world of steampunky fairies. The show stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne and this batch of episodes will be its swan song. Meanwhile The Consultant on Feb. 24 is a dark comedy workplace thriller starring Christoph Waltz.
The biggest hits this month, however, might just be some recent cinema faves. If February is for lovers, Amazon didn’t get the memo as there are quite a few horror movies of note here.

Craig Mazin has a fascinating career trajectory. It's doubtful that someone would consider the writer of "Scary Movie 3," "Scary Movie 4," "Superhero Movie," or the Harland Williams sci-fi film "RocketMan" as one of the greatest voices working in genre entertainment, but that's exactly who he is. Years after his run with spoof and parody films, folks were puzzled when it was announced that HBO was releasing a serious, historical tragedy television miniseries about the Chernobyl disaster of 1986, created and written by Craig Mazin.
"Wait, the 'Scary Movie 3' guy?!" plenty exclaimed. Yes, the very same person who wrote a script that blended elements of "The Ring," "Signs," and "8 Mile" into a single horror parody film was entrusted with telling the story of one of the world's most devastating catastrophes.
The result was "Chernobyl," and the five-part series received 19 nominations at the Primetime Emmy Awards, winning for Outstanding Limited Series,...

Airplane! director David Zucker recently reiterated a joke he’s told frequently through the years.
“When we do screenings of Airplane! we get the question if we could do Airplane! today,” said Zucker. “The first thing I could think of was, ‘Sure, just without the jokes.’ “
In a video posted this week by Dennis Prager’s Prager U, the director of comedy classics such as The Kentucky Fried Movie, Top Secret! and the Naked Gun films got more specific about the current state of Hollywood.
“My current writing partner Pat Proft and I wrote a parody of James Bond and Mission: Impossible,” related Zucker. “One female executive said, ‘This joke is getting pretty risqué here.’ It was a mild joke about the lead female character. Because she had come up through the police department and through the FBI…she needed a breast reduction to fit into the kevlar vest.”

Filmmaker David Zucker was one of the biggest names in comedy in the 1980s thanks to the success of classic comedies like “Airplane!” and “The Naked Gun” franchise, but he no longer believes either film could be made by Hollywood in 2022. Well they could, “just without the jokes.” In a new interview (via Mediaite), Zucker said Hollywood is “destroying comedy” by being overly sensitive.
“We could be as offensive as we liked,” Zucker said about his directing career, which also included helming “Scary Movie 3” and “Scary Movie 4.” “We went where the laughs were. We never thought that we were offending anyone, but if we were offending people we knew we were on the right track. As time went on, it got to be the ’90s and the 2000s and it did change… We never worried about any of this stuff with the ‘Naked Gun’ or ‘Scary Movie’ films.

From the moment it was announced, 2005's "Brokeback Mountain" was the subject of ridicule — "the gay cowboy film," people called it. If anything, the movie's box office success and three Oscar wins (including Ang Lee for Best Achievement in Directing) only egged comedians on. Indeed, long before his infamous homophobic tweets and stand-up jokes, Kevin Hart appeared in a sequence directly mocking Lee's romantic drama in 2006's "Scary Movie 4." Two years after that, Ben Siller's 2008 satirical action/comedy "Tropic Thunder" gave "Brokeback Mountain" yet another ribbing with the in-movie trailer for "Satan's Alley," a fake period drama in which two queer 12th-century Irish monks fall in love.
None of this is to suggest "Brokeback Mountain" or any film, no matter how "important" it's deemed to be, is off the table for comedy ... assuming that comedy is punching up at a deserving target. One could argue "Satan's Alley," much like the rest of "Tropic Thunder,...

Netflix has added a new category of movies to its service, thanks to a bit from last weekend’s episode of “Saturday Night Live.” Inspired by a musical bit from the show, viewers can now browse through an entire section of “short-ass” movies.
In the pretaped sketch, Pete Davidson, Chris Redd, musical guest Gunna and actor Simon Rex rapped about how movies nowadays are just way too long. “Three hours, 47 minutes? Bro, you must be crazy. No thanks, I’mma watch a short-ass movie like ‘Driving Miss Daisy,'” Davidson sang.
The entire premise of the song, called “Short-Ass Movies” was the idea that none of the men wanted to watch a movie longer than maybe an hour and 40 minutes. So, on Monday, the official “Netflix Is A Joke” account quote-tweeted the sketch, and captioned it “good idea.”

While the first day of spring technically belongs to March, everyone knows that it kicks into high gear in April. To celebrate the changing of the seasons, Hulu is finally bringing back its signature original series for April 2021.
Season 4 of the multiple Emmy award-winning The Handmaid’s Tale premieres on April 28. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen June and her dystopian world. In fact, it’s been so long that our own world decided to endure its own dystopian pandemic in the meantime. Hopefully this series’ return will mean we can keep our political and social collapses on television where they belong.
Aside from The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu isn’t brining much else to the table in terms of originals this month. Thankfully, the one other original that Hulu has in store for April sounds completely righteous. Sasquatch, the latest docuseries from the Duplass brothers producing team, will cover exactly what the title promises.

Even horror maestro Eli Roth can’t escape the box office pull of a good, old-fashioned video game film adaptation. The filmmaker, best known for directing slashers like “Hostel” and “The Green Inferno,” is now turning his attention to another fan-friendly genre: extremely popular video games. Roth will next direct a big screen adaptation of “Borderlands,” the first-person shooter game that hinges on daring adventure scenarios that take place on the planet Pandora (no relation to “Avatar”). It’s Roth’s latest move beyond horror films, as the filmmaker last directed the unexpectedly family-friendly fantasy film “The House With a Clock in Its Walls” in 2018.
“Borderlands” is one of the world’s most successful video game franchises, with more than 57 million units sold worldwide, including over 22 million units of “Borderlands 2.” The most recent installment, “Borderlands 3,” was released in September 2019, and has already sold nearly 8 million units worldwide and was honored...

Writer-producer Saladin K. Patterson has signed a new multi-year, overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television. Under the pact, Patterson, who currently is an executive producer on FX comedy Untitled Lil Dickey, will develop, write and produce comedy series for network, cable and streaming platforms. Untitled Lil Dicky, based on the life of comedian and rapper Lil Dicky, received a series order at FX earlier this year.
“The studio’s history with Saladin began more than sixteen years ago, and we’re so happy to welcome him back,” said Carolyn Cassidy, 20th Century Fox TV President of Creative Affairs. “His writing is as smart as it is hilarious, two adjectives that pretty well sum up Saladin himself. After “Chernobyl,” Craig Mazin expanded his creative partnerships, which required him to move offices in Old Town Pasadena to accommodate a growing staff. In addition to only being “essentially 13 minutes from my house,” Mazin says he likes that pocket of town because of the older architecture that often includes exposed brick. “It’s funky, and I don’t know how to write in a normal space,” he says. The Weinstein Co. bankruptcy saga may finally be near a conclusion.
In a packed Delaware courtroom on Tuesday, Judge Mary Walrath said she’d happily approve the sale of The Weinstein Co. to stalking-horse bidder Lantern Capital Partners, according to the proceedings observed remotely by TheWrap.
The Dallas-based private equity firm was the initial bidder to come forward as a stalking-horse bidder for TWC and virtually all of its assets, and the company agreed to keep the studio’s employees on as a “going concern” in a $310 million bid.

Last week, TWC announced that it had accepted Lantern Capital as a winning bid, despite a late last-minute bid from Broadway producer Howard Kagan’s Inclusion Media. Kagan and representatives for TWC went back-and-forth for about a week, with Kagan arguing he wasn’t given enough context and information regarding certain contracts held by TWC to make a qualifying bid.
The TWC board remained steadfast that Lantern’s bid gave the company, in the midst of pressure from the creditors’ committee, to seriously consider Kagan and his company’s offer.
There’s no indication at this time whether there are any options for Kagan moving forward now that the court has approved the sale to Lantern.

TWC listed both assets and liabilities of between $500 million and $1 billion. Top creditors include Union Bank and Bank of America, both of which are owed a combined $156 million.
Unsecured creditors include China’s Wanda Pictures ($14.4 million), marketing company Palisades Media ($13.7 million) and David Boies’ law firm Boies, Schiller and Flexner ($5.7 million).
Robert del Genioof of Fti Consulting has served as chief restructuring officer, overseeing the company’s finances and operations during the bankruptcy process. The board also retained Moelis as its banker and two law firms in Cravath, Swaine & Moore and Richards, Layton & Finger.
The New York-based company, founded in 2005 by, has cut an outsize swath in the indie film world, producing back-to-back Oscar Best Picture winners (2010’s “The King’s Speech” and 2011’s “The Artist”) as well as mainstream hits like Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained,” “Scary Movie 4” and the family film “Paddington.”

The majority of the The Weinstein Company’s bankrupt assets will go to it’s original bidder, the Dallas-based Lantern Capital Partners, TheWrap has learned.
Lantern emerged as the first and only stalking horse bidder for virtually all of the company’s assets in March. The Dallas-based private equity firm agreed to keep the studio’s employees on as a “going concern,” should the bankruptcy court approve the sale — valued at $310 million — court filings said.
Read TWC’s statement on the sale:
The Weinstein Company is pleased to announce that Lantern Capital is the winning bidder in the sale for substantially all of the assets of the Company. No other bid offered as much value to the estate as the Lantern bid, which was also the Debtors’ stalking horse bid and was negotiated with input from the Office of the New York Attorney General. “Lantern’s bid clearly achieves the highest and best value for the estate and its creditors,” said Ms. Ivona Smith, a member of The Weinstein Company Board of Representatives. “We look forward to working with Lantern to close the transaction and consummate the going concern sale.”
Earlier today, news outlets reported that the Company received a letter of interest from Inclusion Media, a potential bidder backed by Howard Kagan. That letter, submitted after the bid deadline, was a conditional indication of interest that contemplated substantially less value to the estate, and did not include a purchase agreement, a financing commitment, a deposit, or a number of other requirements for a qualified bid. While the Inclusion letter did claim to offer certain attractive aspects for victims, the Debtors concluded after discussions with Mr. Kagan that the Inclusion letter was not a bona fide offer. Thus, in furtherance of its fiduciary duty, the Board selected the bid that offered, with certainty, the most overall value to the estate.

TWC’s profitable TV division boasts one megahit franchise: Lifetime’s long-running fashion reality series “Project Runway” and its many spinoffs. It has also produced episodic series such as MTV’s “Scream” and Netflix’s “Marco Polo,” which were both canceled after two seasons.
In conclusion, the TWC board said it “regrets that it cannot undo the damage Harvey Weinstein caused, but hopes that today’s events will mark a new beginning. Even as the Company heads into bankruptcy, the Company remains committed to doing whatever it can to maximize value for its creditors and, in cooperation with Attorney General, continue its pursuit of justice for any victims.”

2017-08-10T07:18:30-07:00What Caused Chris Pratt/Anna Faris Split?
Chris Pratt and Anna Faris shocked fans when they announced that they were legally separating after eight years of marriage — but insiders reveal in the new issue of Us Weekly that Pratt’s skyrocketing career caused a rift between the beloved couple.
When the duo first tied the knot in July 2009, Faris’ career was on the rise with recent roles in The House Bunny, Scary Movie 4 and Brokeback Mountain. Meanwhile, Pratt’s hit show Parks and Recreation had just premiered three months earlier. Soon, the situation reversed when the NBC sitcom took off and Pratt, 38, went on to nab starring roles in films such as Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World.

Inexcusably self-indulgent. Tarantino gratifies his enormous self-love and his amusement at his own genius at the expense of all else. I’m “biast” (pro): loved Tarantino’s last two films…
I’m “biast” (con): …but really hate some of his films, too
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Damn. So after the marvels of Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino has swung back to the Kill Bill style of filmmaking, which I described in my review of Basterds as a cinematic “circle jerk in which he and his fans get off on one another and how clever they all are to be such rapacious film geeks.” With the inexcusably self-indulgent The Hateful Eight, Tarantino has returned to the gratification of his enormous self-love and his amusement at his own genius at the expense of all else.
There are no characters to like in Eight.

It takes a certain set of balls to let Chumbawamba lyrics introduce your film (“Tubthumping,” of course), but Balls Out isn’t just Any movie. Andrew Disney’s underdog sports comedy is far from conventional, and while it begins like every other “road to athletic redemption” story, a constant mockery of the sports genre rulebook turns this pee-wee effort into a Jv superstar. It’s not exactly a Tom-Brady-caliber showstopper, but more a Ryan-Howard-like slugger that belts a home run whenever jokes connect. Just expect some mighty whiffs to accompany those gut-busting dingers. Honestly, though, who cares – chicks dig the long ball, and in that respect, Disney earns plenty of fans.
The story of Balls Out follows a rag-tag intramural football team, the Panthers, and their path to redemption after disbanding during their freshman year. Even though they were crowned league champions, a crippling injury puts Grant (Nick Kocher) in a wheelchair,...

Furious 7 fended off solid newcomers Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 and Unfriended to top the domestic box office for the third weekend in a row.More importantly, the movie had another stunning weekend overseas. Specifically, it continued to do massive business in China, where its earned nearly $250 million through its first eight days.Furious 7 has now grossed $1.15 billion worldwide, which ranks seventh all-time. Even if it falls off quickly from here, it still has a real chance of making it past $1.4 billion by the end of its run.Domestically, Furious 7 fell 51 percent to $29.2 million. In comparison, the last two Fast movies dropped 44 percent and 37 percent at the same point. To date, Furious 7 has earned $294.5 million; it could still reach $350 million, but would need to hold up well against Avengers: Age of Ultron in two weeks.Playing at 3,633 locations, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 opened to $23.8 million this weekend.

With $59.6 million, Furious 7 easily held on to first place at the domestic box office. It also got off to an incredible start in China, where it set the opening day record with $68.8 million. At the domestic box office, Furious 7's 60 percent drop was a slight improvement over Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6, both of which fell over 62 percent in their second frames. Without any serious competition for the next two weeks, the movie is guaranteed to earn at least $350 million total.Worldwide, Furious 7 is already the highest-grossing Fast movie with $801 million. It's now on track to become one of the biggest movies ever with at least $1.2 billion.DreamWorks Animation's Home (2015) held on to the second spot with $18.5 million, which is down 31 percent from last weekend. It might not have been a particularly surprising occurrence, but it happened all the same. Over the weekend Furious 7 set the record for an opening weekend in April, earning an estimated $143.6 million at the box office (this also makes it the ninth best opening weekend of all time, just so you know). It takes the April record by a wide margin, as it’s the first April release to open to over $100 million, so that should give you some idea of just how unique this opening is. Previously, last year’s $95 million opening for Captain America: The Winter Solider had the record (and before it, two of the other titles in the Fast and Furious franchise had held the honor), but it now belongs to the latest installment in said Fast and Furious franchise. Now, let me try to break down just why it shattered the record like it did.

Spoof films are rarely done well. There is so little subtlety in them, and they often result in terribly written and ridiculous slapstick comedy films that mock other films in a very obvious and unrelentingly silly manner (see Scary Movie 4, Date Movie, Disaster Movie, A Haunted House) but this, a satire more than a spoof, finally shows the pretenders how it’s done, bringing a softer hand to a genre that is flooded with terribly over-bearing abominations.
Directed by David Wain (Role Models, Wanderlust) who co-writes it alongside Michael Showalter (Wet Hot American Summer), They Came Together is something of a throwback, reminiscent of older spoof-comedy films like Airplane.

Among new releases, faith-based drama Heaven is for Real destroyed Johnny Depp's Transcendence this weekend. Still, it couldn't match Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which held on to first place for the third weekend in a row.The Marvel sequel added $26.6 million this weekend, which represents a light 36 percent decline. It reached $200 million on Sunday, and should pass Thor: The Dark World in the next few days.Rio 2 repeated in second place with $22.5 million. Its 43 percent drop was much steeper than the first Rio's 33 percent dip on the exact same weekend in 2011. Through 10 days, the animated sequel has grossed $75.4 million.Playing at 2,417 locations, Heaven is for Real earned an excellent $21.5 million this weekend. Add in its Wednesday and Thursday grosses, and the faith-based true story has already grossed $28.5 million.Along with Son of God and God's Not Dead, this is the third faith-based hit in 2014 so far (you could include Noah as well,...

In a strange turn of events, Rio 2 took first place at the box office on Friday, but fell back to second place for the three-day weekend. Chalk this up to nice weather throughout most of the country, which kept family audiences away from the multiplexes on Saturday. As a result, Captain America: The Winter Soldier was able to narrowly hold on to the top spot for the second-straight weekend. The superhero sequel added $41.3 million, which was off 57 percent from its debut. That's about on par with Iron Man 3 (58 percent) and Thor: The Dark World (57 percent), but it's also a bit worse than the movie's strong reviews and word-of-mouth would suggest. So far, Captain America: The Winter Soldier has earned $158.9 million at the domestic box office. If it remains on pace with the Thor and Iron Man sequels, it will finish with at least $225 million.Playing at 3,948 locations, Rio 2...

Ice Cube and Kevin Hart star in the big Us comedy hit Ride Along. So: is it any good?
Three things you should know about Ride Along: it’s got someone who calls himself ‘Lil P-Nut’ listed amongst its cast; Ice Cube’s funniest moment involves his straight-faced reading of the line ‘Thanks Assface’; and Laurence Fishburne turns up at one point, doing a pretty good impersonation of Laurence Fishburne slumming it.
If you’re happy with all that, then Ride Along is for you. If you’re wavering, let me try a pitch to sum up the film’s deft play with narrative and genre convention. Here goes: ‘Kevin Hart and Ice Cube go on a ride along’. No? Come on …
To be fair, Ride Along doesn’t pretend to have any ambition beyond what its trailer has already shown us. Ice Cube is a serious cop.

The overlooked greats of the year 1998 come under the spotlight in our list of its 25 underappreciated movies...
Dominated as it was by the financial success of two giant killer asteroid movies, gross-out comedy hit There's Something About Mary and Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, 1998 proved to be an extraordinary year for cinema.
Okay, so history doesn't look back too fondly on Roland Emmerich's mishandled Godzilla remake, and Lethal Weapon 4 was hardly the best buddy-cop flick ever made, despite its handsome profit. But search outside the top-10 grossing films of that year, and you'll find all kinds of spectacular modern classics: Peter Weir's wonderful The Truman Show, John Frankenheimer's rock-solid thriller Ronin, and Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line.
Then there was The Big Lebowski, the Coen brothers' sublime comedy that has since become a deserved and oft-quoted cult favourite.

‘The Butler’: ‘True story’ drama passes $100 million milestone at North American box office (photo: Alan Rickman as Ronald Reagan, Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan in ‘The Butler’) Hailed as a sleeper hit upon its North American release in mid-August, Lee Daniels’ The Butler, featuring an all-star cast that includes Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, Vanessa Redgrave, Jane Fonda, James Marsden, and Robin Williams, passed the $100 million milestone at the domestic box office last Sunday, September 15, 2013. As of Monday, the $30 million-budgeted The Butler‘s domestic box-office total stood at $100.5 million, as per Box Office Mojo. The "based on a true story" account of a black butler (Forest Whitaker) who served eight U.S. presidents, both Republicans and Democrats, during the course of three decades, The Butler was distributed by the Oscar-savvy The Weinstein Company. Considering the film’s domestic box-office success and the generally positive reviews — 80% approval rating and 7.1/10 average among...

Choosing to see a horror movie spoof is almost as risky as seeing a regular horror movie. The sheer number of films representing each genre is daunting enough, but the success rate is almost sickeningly low. For every "Young Frankenstein" and "Cannibal: The Musical" we get a "Scary Movie 4" and "Scary Movie 5." That being said, if anyone can skewer the easy target that is the current state of horror, it's the crew from "Reno 911!" Written and directed by and starring Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, "Hell Baby" is a send-up of everything from haunted houses to exorcisms (good luck topping The Exorcism of Jonah Hill, boys). The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and is gearing up for a VOD run this July. The latest trailer provides a few chuckles, but its subtle winks at genre tropes are what really make it stand out (that...

As the only brand-new movie in nationwide release, sci-fi adventure Oblivion easily took first place with an estimated $38.2 million. Unfortunately, overall box office was down around 19 percent from the same frame last year, and it now appears that April 2013 will wind up about even with April 2012.Oblivion's $38.2 million start ($5.5 million in IMAX) is the highest non-sequel debut for star Tom Cruise since 2005's War of the Worlds, and it's his fifth-best ever behind that movie and the first three Mission: Impossible outings. It was a bit higher than 2002's Minority Report ($35.7 million), though with ticket price inflation it likely had noticeably lower attendance. Oblivion's solid (but not spectacular) opening can be attributed at least in part to smart scheduling. Bracing for the Summer box office season, studios typically avoid releasing big-budget fare during the month of April; Universal Pictures, however, successfully stretched the calendar in April 2009 and 2011 with Fast and Furious...

If this weekend’s box office is any indication, the couch jumping stigma that has plagued Tom Cruise’s career for the better part of the last decade may finally be thing of the past.
Cruise’s latest, the $120 million sci-fi adventure Oblivion, opened to a solid $38.2 million this weekend. That’s a terrific start for the chiseled star, who has struggled recently at the box office with under-performers like Jack Reacher, Rock of Ages, Valkyrie, and Knight and Day. In fact, only four Cruise vehicles have ever opened higher — and three of them are Mission Impossible movies. (The other...

Jackie Robinson biopic 42 got off to a very strong start this weekend, while Scary Movie 5 wound up opening even lower than already-low expectations. The Top 12 earned $108.8 million, which was slightly up from the same weekend last year.42 took first place with $27.5 million from 3,003 locations. That's easily the best opening ever for a baseball movie ahead of The Benchwarmers ($19.7 million) and Moneyball ($19.5 million). It's also the second-highest opening for a sports drama behind 2009's The Blind Side ($34.1 million). Warner Bros. is reporting that the audience was 52 percent female and 59 percent over the age of 35, and all demographic groups awarded the movie a rare "A+" CinemaScore. Combine the older crowds with the great word-of-mouth and it's entirely possible that 42 winds up earning close to $100 million by the end of its run, which will make this a huge success for Warner Bros. and producer Legendary Pictures. At 3,402 locations, Scary Movie 5 opened in second place with $14.2 million.

While Evil Dead struggled not to plummet like so many 3D Texas Chainsaws, Scary Movie 5 proved to be a franchise that probably wasn’t worth reviving. Funny; A Haunted House was a modest hit and Scary Movie 5 bombs.
Seems the Wayans Bros. finally got their revenge against Dimension.
Back in 2006, Scary Movie 4 opened to over $40 million. Seven years later, Scary Movie 5 could only lure in $15 million. Good enough for second place on a slow weekend dominated by a baseball biopic but lousy for a once highly profitable franchise.
Why is Scary Movie 5 such a dud? Did they wait too long between sequels? Was it the lack of franchise star Anna Faris? Did audiences already get their fill of horror movie spoofing with A Haunted House? Were viewers put off by a marketing campaign built around Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan? Whatever the reason may be,...

The Jackie Robinson biopic, "42," starring Harrison Ford, took first place at the domestic box office with an estimated $27 million. The film cost $40 million to make, which means that it will easily become profitable. It has a 75% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes. "Scary Movie 5" took second place with $15.2 million, falling short of the $40 million that "Scary Movie 4" earned during its opening weekend seven years ago. The fifth installment cost $20 million and will likely become profitable by next weekend. Not surprisingly it has a terrible 5% fresh rating. Meanwhile, Tom Cruise's "Oblivion" sci-fi film opened in international theaters. It took first place by grossing $61.1 million. The movie cost about $120 million to make and has a 66% fresh rating. "Oblivion" is set to hit Us theaters on April 19th. Click here to read our "42" review.

No one really wanted Scary Movie 5. Seven years ago audiences turned out to give Scary Movie 4, what easily should have been the last one, a decent send off with a very respectable $40 million opening and a domestic total of $90 million. But some folks don't know when to let it go and audiences showed just how last decade the franshise is. The movie launched to the tune of $15 million, taking a distant second place at this weekends box office and setting a record low for the series, far below what most of the other Scary Movies entries enjoyed. We haven't seen Brian Helgeland behind the lens since his thriller The Order tanked almost ten years ago. But the director of A Knights Tale discovered his directorial second wind with the historical drama 42, the number one movie this weekend. The movie recounts the tumultuous events surrounding the signing of Jackie Robinson,...

42 easily won this weekend at the box office, earning an estimated $27 million. The baseball movie had the benefit of a modest budget and Harrison Ford has no problem drawing a crowd, so Warner Bros. should be happy with its performance.
On the other hand, Scary Movie 5‘s performance may leave the Weinsteins shaking their heads. Scary Movie 4 was released in 2006 and earned $40 million in its opening weekend. The fifth installment of the comedy franchise couldn’t even break the $20 million mark this time around, earning only $15.1 million and taking second place. This may signal the end of the franchise, or at least another long break.
It’s no surprise to see that Evil Dead is down at fifth place. Horror movies tend to be front-loaded, so they get most of the people interested in seeing the movie in the first week. Evil Dead has earned a total of...

Tomorrow, Major League Baseball will celebrate its annual Jackie Robinson Day, and all players and umpires will wear jerseys with the number 42, which Robinson, the first African-American player in the Mlb, made famous. Don’t be surprised if the execs at Warner Bros. join in on the fun. The studio did have a grand slam weekend, after all.
Warner Bros.’ new baseball drama 42 topped the box office with $27.3 million — far ahead of recent baseball titles like Moneyball ($19.5 million debut) and Trouble with the Curve ($12.2 million). In fact, 42 scored the best ever debut for a baseball film, surpassing The Benchwarmers’ $19.7 million bow.

The new Jackie Robinson biopic "42" hit a home run at the box office this weekend, earning an estimated $27.3 million according to Film.com to easily take the top spot.
Easily because this weekend's other new release, "Scary Movie 5," hit a weak popup to short, bringing in just $15.2 million for a second place debut. That doesn't sound too bad until you consider the fact that "Scary Movie 4," which came out way back in 2006, earned $40.2 million in its opening weekend. How the mighty have fallen.
It will be interesting to see whether or not "42" can maintain its momentum once it goes up against stiffer competition: Tom Cruise's sci-fi epic "Oblivion" is set to hit theaters this Friday. Until then, though, head over to Film.com for a look at this weekend's box office top ten.
