Merriam-Webster's "Words We're Watching" feature published an article stating that this show and in particular its original cast member Carson Kressley are largely responsible for the introduction into English of the word "zhoosh" (also sometimes spelled "zhush," "joozh," "zhoozh," "zhuzh," or "tzhuj"), meaning "to improve in appearance by way of a slight adjustment to wardrobe, hairstyle, etc." The Oxford English Dictionary and several other sources trace the term to Polari, a secret language used by the gay community in Britain from at least the nineteenth century (and possibly farther back) through the mid-twentieth century to disguise their homosexuality at a time when it was illegal. Other Polari words that eventually made their way into mainstream British slag include camp, mince, scarper, ogle, butch, and naff.
