Patricia Clarkson Opens Up About Hollywood Harassment and Weinstein Dispute
Patricia Clarkson at an event for Shutter Island (2010)
Patricia Clarkson, known for her decades of work in independent and studio films, is promoting Lilly, a biographical drama based on the life of equal pay advocate Lilly Ledbetter. While doing so, the Oscar-nominated actress has opened up about past encounters in Hollywood that involved inappropriate behavior, power imbalances, and professional intimidation. Her remarks, shared during recent interviews, shed light on the longstanding dynamics that women in the film industry have worked to expose and change.

During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Clarkson recounted a meeting early in her career with what she described as a “very big, famous person.” She did not name the individual, but described the interaction in detail. According to Clarkson, she arrived for a professional meeting and was greeted by the man wearing only a towel. “He goes, ‘Oh, I was just working out, I’m going to put some clothes on,’” Clarkson said.

Patricia Clarkson Reveals She Once Had a Hollywood Meeting With a ‘Very Big, Famous’ Man Who Greeted Her in a Towel
Image
Patricia Clarkson shared Wednesday a series of Hollywood experiences she had early in her career with sexual harassment, including one instance where she had a meeting with a “very big, famous person, and he came out in a towel.”

“I was just like, ‘Ok!’ He goes, ‘Oh, I was just working out, I’m going to put some clothes on.’ I said, ‘Yes, please do!’” the Oscar-nominated actress said on “The Kelly Clarkson” show while promoting her new film, “Lilly.”

The other instance involved a producer who offered to hold her hand through an intimate scene after she declined to take an acting job due its required nudity.

“I was offered a part, and it had nudity, and I just was just out of school and I was like, ‘I don’t really want to be naked,’ and the producer literally said to me, ‘Well, when you’re doing the nudity,...

Patricia Clarkson Recalls Harvey Weinstein Telling Her She’d “Never Work Again”
Image
More than 20 years later, Patricia Clarkson is recounting her unfortunate experience with Harvey Weinstein.

The Oscar nominee explained that the disgraced producer tried to submit her at the 76th Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress, despite her lead role in Miramax‘s 2003 film The Station Agent.

“I hate when actors put themselves in false categories. I think that’s something that needs to be addressed by the Academy. Too often it happens,” she told Business Insider. “When you are supporting, you should be truly a supporting player, and when you’re the lead, you have to step up and go into a harder category. I was the lead in Station Agent, so I said, ‘No, Harvey, I’m not going into supporting.'”

That same year, she received a Supporting Actress nod for her performance in the United Artists film Pieces of April. “I’m definitely supporting in that. Katie Holmes...

When Peter Dinklage Nearly Turned Down Cyrano—Until This Key Script Fix Changed His Mind
Image
Which Major Script Change Made Peter Dinklage Play Cyrano?(Photo Credit –Facebook)

Peter Dinklage wasn’t exactly sold on Cyrano at first. The idea of playing a guy with a fake nose didn’t sit right with him. It felt a little too theatrical, a little too familiar. He told Variety’s Stagecraft podcast: “It didn’t really speak to me. It was very theatrical, and it was all about a guy and a nose. And inevitably the nose was a fake nose, and [the role] was played by a handsome actor… I always thought, ‘What’s the big deal? It’s just a handsome actor in a fake nose. He gets to take it off after each show.’”

So yeah, Cyrano nearly lost its Cyrano. The film, directed by Joe Wright of Atonement fame, was a reimagining of the 1897 French classic Cyrano de Bergerac. It had undergone many makeovers before: Steve Martin did it with Roxanne,...

Bobby Cannavale Recalls Studios Wanting To Recast Peter Dinklage in Their Award-Winning 2003 Film
Image
Two decades after its theatrical release, Bobby Cannavale revisits the path that led to creating the critically acclaimed film The Station Agent. During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Cannavale reveals that the creation of The Station Agent lingered for four years, primarily due to Peter Dinklage's casting.

Written and directed by Tom McCarthy (in his feature directorial debut), The Station Agent centers on Dinklage's Finbar McBride, a man with dwarfism who inherits an abandoned train station in a small New Jersey town. There, he meets Joe Oramas (Cannavale), a hot dog vendor, and Olivia Harris (Patricia Clarkson), an artist, and the three develop a close friendship. At the time, Dinklage wasn't an "A-list-type" actor, so studios were looking to recast him; according to Cannavale, studios also wanted to do away with one of the film's central points: Fin's dwarfism.

"I remember everything about that movie, because it took forever to get made,...

Although the series contained no shortage of memorable action sequences, the show’s strength was first and foremost its characters and cast. While many actors saw a significant boost in their careers as a result of appearing on Game of Thrones, few characters were as immensely popular as Peter Dinklage’s Tyrion Lannister. The fiercely intelligent, yet honorable son of Westeros’ most cruel family was brought to life in intimate detail thanks to Dinklage’s powerful performance. Tyrion is almost certainly the role that he will be most associated with for the rest of his career, but Dinklage earned his breakout performance in the heartfelt dramedy, The Station Agent.

SAG Awards mystery: How did Johnny Depp get the gold for ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’?
Image
I recently recapped the fascinating Best Actor race of 2003, in which saw Sean Penn in “Mystic River” win the first of his two Best Actor Oscars. (He would prevail again five years later for “Milk.”)

Regarding Penn’s first victory, he faced stiff competition not only from Bill Murray in “Lost in Translation” but also Johnny Depp in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” Depp hadn’t initially been considered much of a threat — until he pulled off a huge upset at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

A dedicated Gold Derby reader has since asked me how Depp managed to surprise at SAG. Figuring that others might be wondering the same thing, I thought that I would offer everyone in awards land my Top 5 reasons why. And here they are.

1. He had the most theatrical performance of the bunch.

And that’s an understatement. In addition to Depp,...

Devin Druid and Founders Day Director Erik Bloomquist Unpack Their Gavel-Killing Horror Comedy
Image
It was only a matter of time before somebody came out with a trippy, blood-soaked Tricentennial slasher movie with a masked killer in a white wig, toting a gavel for a weapon. And during an election year no less. There will be disorder in this court, and you will love it. Welcome to Founders Day, the offbeat horror comedy from Bloomquist Brothers Erik and Carson, the filmmakers who brought us She Came from the Woods and Night at the Eagle Inn through their Mainframe Pictures.

The daring political slasher revolves around the small town of Fairwood, which is shaken by a series of gruesome killings during a Founders Day weekend celebration prior to a pivotal mayoral election. Accusations abound, and the threat of a masked killer has everybody on edge as the residents rush to uncover the truth.

Erik Bloomquist directed the project, which he co-wrote with brother Carson. The...

Peter Dinklage Nearly Starred In Another Iconic Christmas Movie Before Elf's Success
Image
Peter Dinklage was originally considered for a role in Bad Santa before starring in Elf. Terry Zwigoff, the director, felt that Dinklage's delivery of the lines in his audition for Bad Santa were "truthful", but not funny. Tony Cox was ultimately cast as Marcus in Bad Santa, one of the roles that opened doors for little person actors to play more well-rounded characters.

Though already one of his earliest breakout American roles, Peter Dinklage was originally eyed for Bad Santa before going on to star in Elf. Both released in 2003, the former centered on an alcoholic thief and his criminal partner posing as a mall Santa and elf in order to conduct a heist at the end of the holiday season, while the latter starred Will Smith as a human who learns he's not actually an elf after being raised in the North Pole by Santa and goes to find his birth father.

A limited series about the Sandy Hook shooting and the ensuing eight-year legal battle between victims’ families and gun manufacturer Remington Arms has landed at Echo Lake Entertainment. Oscar nominee Robin Swicord (“When They See Us”) and Sarah Koskoff will create the show in consultation with several families directly affected by the tragedy and their attorneys.

Swicord, Koskoff and producer Mary Jane Skalski of Echo Lake Entertainment are teaming as executive producers to tell the story of the Sandy Hook case, which uncovered how a New York private equity firm purchased legacy American gun companies in the mid-2000s, effectively creating the equivalent of Big Pharma in the consumer arms industry. Swicord and Koskoff have followed the case closely and are consulting with several families who brought the lawsuit, as well as their attorney, Josh Koskoff (Sarah Koskoff’s brother).

Javier Bardem has earned his fourth career SAG Award nomination for portraying TV icon Desi Arnaz in “Being the Ricardos.” Aaron Sorkin’s latest effort examines a hellish week for Bardem’s Arnaz and Nicole Kidman’s Lucille Ball, as they navigate a scandal that threatens to upend their careers.

Bardem is already a two-time SAG Award winner thanks to “No Country for Old Men.” He claimed Best Supporting Actor for his chilling performance of Anton Chigurh, and the entire cast won SAG’s coveted Best Ensemble prize. ‘Cyrano’ Reminds You That Peter Dinklage Is a Bona Fide Sex Symbol
Image
Peter Dinklage is nothing if not soulful. The 52-year-old actor can do comedic, and charming, and a color palette’s worth of rage; in movies like The Station Agent (2003) or on any given Game of Thrones episode, you’ll likely get a lovely combo of all three. But give him the chance to communicate melancholia — let this veteran thespian unleash a sad-eyed look under a heavy brow — and you see an entirely different side of Dinklage come out. It makes perfect sense that he’d take on the title character...

SAG Awards predictions for Film Actor: Will Smith (‘King Richard’) leads close race with Benedict Cumberbatch (‘The Power of the Dog’)
Image
Since the Screen Actors Guild Awards began handing out trophies for Best Film Actor in 1994, every single winner has gone on to receive an Oscar nomination. In just one instance, Benicio Del Toro in “Traffic” (2000), the SAG Awards winner went on to compete in the supporting category at the Academy Awards instead (he won that as well). According to Gold Derby’s 2022 SAG Awards predictions for Film Actor, the five nominees will be Will Smith (“King Richard”), Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”), Denzel Washington (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”), Andrew Garfield and Peter Dinklage (“Cyrano”).

Smith’s performance as Richard Williams in “King Richard” comes in first place with 69/20 odds. Smith has one prior SAG Awards nomination for 2006’s “The Pursuit of Happyness,” where he lost Film Actor to eventual Oscar winner Forest Whitaker (“The Last King of Scotland”). In “King Richard,” Smith plays the the father of tennis...
