Greg Cannom, the masterful prosthetics and makeup specialist who received Oscars for his work on Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Mrs. Doubtfire, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Vice, has died. He was 73.

Cannom worked often with makeup maestro Rick Baker early in his career, and Baker on Friday reported his death in an Instagram post. “His work will be remembered long after his passing,” he wrote. No details were immediately available.

In March 2023, a GoFundMe page was set up to help Cannom with expenses as he battled diabetes and a staph infection that led to one of his legs being amputated below his knee.

Hans Zimmer picks favorite scores of his own; do you agree?
Inception. The Thin Red Line. Driving Miss Daisy. Gladiator. Dune. Any one of these films – and dozens upon dozens more – could be argued as Hans Zimmer’s best score. But what does Zimmer consider the peak of his oeuvre?

Guy with a Movie Camera aka Reece Feldman recently challenged Hans Zimmer to find out what the composer thought of his own scores. To start off the single-elimination tournament, it was Pirates of the Caribbean against The Lion King, for which Zimmer earned his first Oscar. Zimmer easily picked the 1994 Disney classic for personal reasons, also noting it was his first score for an animated film. “Lion King is written for my daughter. I didn’t really wanna do the movie. I didn’t really want to do animation. And then the movie really surprised me because it’s about the father dying and my father died when I was six years old.

Pirates of the Carribean Tavern To Be Called The Beak and Barrel
Image
Disney has announced the name of the new Pirates of the Caribbean tavern opening in the Magic Kingdom later this year. The new location will be called The Beak and Barrel.

This new dining location will be located where the Pirate League used to be, next to the gift shop.

This Substack is reader-supported. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

Backstory

My money is that this new tavern will tie into Disney’s next “Pirates of the Caribbean” film because we have a female pirate once again. This time, the pirate is Captain Meridain “Merry” Goldwyn. She established the tavern with her “first mate,” Rummy the Parrot.

I don’t know that this will tie into the all-female “Pirates of the Caribbean” film, but Disney tends to do anything that ties into their current IP, so I think there is a better than average chance.

Get ready because Disney is dropping anchor on one of its most exciting new additions in years. Built on lore, legend, and a heavy pour of pirate mischief, The Beak and Barrel is said to be established by Captain Meridian “Merry” Goldwyn, a legendary rumrunner with a heart of gold and a taste for adventure. And she’s not flying solo.

What's coming to The Beak and Barrel?

Disney Parks Blog announced that the feathered first mate Rummy will be watching over the bar, ready to crack wise, lead toasts, and share “tales of piracy” with anyone who’ll listen.

Disney fans may be thinking, "Why does Rummy look awfully familiar?...

Johnny Depp Sports a Grey Beard and Shabby Jeans in 'Day Drinker' Set Images
Image
Johnny Depp is slowly making his way back into Hollywood, but images from the set of his latest film, the action crime movie Day Drinker, has given a first look at the unrecognizable former heartthrob sporting a scruffy beard and long greying hair. However, it is all for the character he is playing, and the beard is not a permanent fixture that those who still follow Depp’s every move need to worry about.

Day Drinker will be the first major studio movie to star Depp since his legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard. While Heard has settled herself into a life away from the glare of Hollywood, Depp has been very slowly building a new portfolio of niche projects on his way to bigger things. While there are still several rumors circling the waters around a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie featuring Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, that...

Every Hollywood Movie to Earn $1 Billion at the Box Office in the Last Decade
Image
The box office collection of a movie is one of the most significant parameters of its success. In the modern age of technological advancements that have enhanced filmmaking, movies earning a fortune at the box office have become a common occurrence, so much so that over fifty movies have grossed over a billion dollars.

It was almost a century from the first film being made in 1888 to the first film to earn a billion in 1997 (Titanic). But with time, movies became an integral part of people’s lives. Hardly a hundred and thirty years old, cinema has become one of the most consumed art forms. This, combined with the boom of technology, gave astounding results. In the last decade alone, thirty-seven films grossed over a billion dollars. Here is a list of Hollywood movies that were released from 2010 to 2019 and crossed this monumental milestone.

1. Alice in Wonderland (2010) A still from...

Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom Try to Stop Crime With Improv in Amazon’s ‘Deep Cover’ Trailer
Image
Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed try to save the world with improv in the trailer for the action-comedy movie Deep Cover.

Director Tom Kingsley’s feature is set to begin streaming via Amazon Prime Video on June 12. Paddy Considine, Sonoya Mizuno, Ian McShane and Sean Bean round out the cast.

Deep Cover centers on Kat (Howard), an improv teacher recruited by an undercover cop (Bean) to enlist two of her students (Bloom and Mohammed) to impersonate criminals as they try to stop crime in London.

“You were so good,” Bloom assures Mohammed during a tense moment. “You committed. It was inspiring.”

Later, Howard scolds Bloom by saying, “I told you not to escalate.” He replies, “It’s where the scene went.”

Kingsley (Doctor Who) helmed the film from a script credited to Derek Connolly, Colin Trevorrow, Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen. Trevorrow, Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald serve as producers.

Hydrate before you die-drate: Best places for water at Wdw
Image
Summer is fast approaching, so we are all drinking more water. A Disney trip can be draining, and skipping a water refill to get in line isn't worth the heat stroke. I lived at Disney World for 2 years and went to the parks several times a week, so I am sharing all the best and worst spots for ice water in the parks!

The Best in Magic Kingdom is Casey's Corner

Casey's, as of my last visit, is a self-serve water station with cups provided. It's right by the seating area facing the castle, and is a must for when you're entering or exiting the park. Use the cups provided to fill your bottle and go! This is also your last chance for ice water as you're leaving Magic Kingdom!

The Worst in Magic Kingdom is Harbor House

To be clear, I Love Harbor House! I love the seating, and the food is solid,...

Sam Smith and Normani’s Copyright Lawsuit Win Over “Dancing With a Stranger” Is Overturned
Image
A federal appeals court has revived a copyright infringement lawsuit against Sam Smith and Normani that claimed their multiplatinum hit “Dancing with a Stranger” ripped off a 2015 song of an identical name.

A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday reversed a lower court’s dismissal of the case, finding that a jury could find that the hooks of the two songs are substantially similar. A California federal judge will reconsider the issue.

The reversal reinforces the appeals courts’ position in recent years warning against the early dismissal of copyright infringement lawsuits over creative works that’s emboldened creators and holders of rights to sue for idea theft. Since 2020, orders in lawsuits implicating Servant, The Shape of Water and the first Pirates of the Caribbean have been overturned.

Sound and Color, which holds the copyright to “Dancing with Strangers” from Jordan Vincent and music duo Skx,...

‘The School Duel’ Teaser: Indie ‘Hunger Games’ Riff Finds a Dystopian Solution to School Shootings
Image
Todd Wiseman Jr.’s “The School Duel” is a near-future dystopian thriller that, at first, you may think you’ve seen before. The indie film, by its very concept, evokes “The Hunger Games” and “Battle Royale.” But it has a rawness to it, plugged deeply into America’s own current epidemic of school shootings and the gun culture that makes them possible, that also makes it absolutely unlike those movies.

IndieWire exclusively debuts the first teaser for “The School Duel” below. The thriller stars then 13-year-old Kue Lawrence as a troubled seventh grader, Samuel Miller, recruited into the Florida governor’s shocking solution for mass school shootings: The School Duel of the title, which pits teenage boys against one another in arena combat, wielding Ar-15s, shotguns, and other deadly weapons until only one is left standing. Some of the boys have been training for years for the duel. Others...

Top 10 Movie Franchises With the Most Loyal Fan Bases
Image
Movies are a one-and-done kind of deal. To be fair, they used to be like that. You watch, you enjoy, you absorb, and you move on, or so we thought. Somewhere down the line, however, we decided to go big on franchises, really big. In better days, this newfound freedom allowed for a larger canvas – an expanded universe – and a fresh take on how one could tell and structure stories.

Quite some time, and then some, has already been spent trying to crack a formula that keeps pulling audiences back, irrespective of how many sequels, spinoffs, and reboots are produced. While the casuals have long languished, others are just terribly fatigued, but fans of certain franchises remain as devoted as ever.

We’re ranking ten franchises with the most loyal fan bases, not just based on box office numbers but also their cultural footprint. No trilogies or Blue Blanc Rogue-type cinema is allowed.

Why Laurence Fishburne Didn't Return As Morpheus In The Matrix Resurrections
Image
When the first two sequels to the Wachowskis' "The Matrix," titled "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions," both released in theaters in 2003, it set a strange precedent for Hollywood blockbuster filmmaking. Certain 2000s-era hits, rather than getting a single expected sequel, were granted a gigantic, outsize, super-sequel finale that was released in two parts. In addition to "The Matrix," major studios also took a "mega-sequel finale" approach to "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Harry Potter," "Twilight," and "The Hunger Games." Indeed, "Mission: Impossible" has since done the same thing with "Dead Reckoning" and "The Final Reckoning." Heck, even Marvel Studios made an "Avengers" mega-sequel-finale with "Infinity War" and "Endgame."

"The Matrix," however, also proved that the mega-sequel approach doesn't always work well. While "Reloaded" and "Revolutions" were hugely ambitious and exciting hits, they were also overstuffed, clunky, and wrestled with too many ideas. The mythology also became far too complicated for its own good.

Showtime Defeats ‘Yellowjackets’ Copyright Lawsuit
Image
Showtime Networks and Lionsgate’s Entertainment One have beaten a lawsuit accusing them of ripping off 2015 survival thriller Eden in Yellowjackets.

Both follow a soccer team whose members start to exhibit cult-like behavior and contemplate cannibalism after crash landing in a remote location. U.S. District Judge Dean Pregerson on Friday dismissed the lawsuit, finding that the plots, characters, themes and settings of the two works aren’t similar enough to constitute copyright infringement.

Eden, written by Nate Parker and distributed by Voltage Pictures, was released in 2015. Showtime sensation Yellowjackets premiered in 2021 to critical acclaim. Its second season opener became the studio’s most streamed debut ever, drawing roughly 2 million viewers across all platforms. The third season as a whole was the most watched so far for the series, with its finale drawing in 3 million watchers in its first seven days.

The Mask of Zorro: The Definitive Zorro adaptation?
Image
The “swashbuckling adventure” is a subgenre that became more and more antiquated as the spectacle of action movies evolved. It probably has less of an edge over westerns since the latter can still rely on gunplay, but sword-fighting films have roots in Hollywood since the golden era with movies like Robin Hood, The Three Musketeers and countless Pirate films. It was the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise that brought swashbucklers into a whole new world with modern audiences.

However, 1998 would see the return of a legendary folk hero, both in the context of the story and in the world of cinema, when Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment produced the Martin Campbell film The Mask of Zorro.

The History

Zorro was created in 1919 by Johnston McCulley. And amazingly this property (that’s over a hundred years old) still has influence on a bevy of popular characters that still goes strong today.

'Pride & Prejudice's Theatrical Re-Release Passes a Modest Milestone
Image
The millennial urge to revisit one's youth is being satisfied in recent months, with a string of theatrical re-releases designed to facilitate just that. This weekend, Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith delivered a haul so massive that it could put new releases to shame. In fact, the film's 20th anniversary re-release outperformed Ben Affleck's The Accountant 2, which made $38 million worldwide as compared to Revenge of the Sith's $42 million haul. But a week before that, Focus Features re-released Pride & Prejudice in celebration of its 20th anniversary, generating about as much as the movie did in its original opening weekend back in 2005.

After 10 days in theaters, Pride & Prejudicehas grossed over $5 million at the domestic box office, taking its domestic haul past the $40 million mark, and its global haul past the $130 million milestone. Directed by Joe Wright, the movie made stars of Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen,...

Why George Lucas's VFX Company Refused To Work On James Cameron's Avatar
Image
James Cameron's 2009 ultra-hit "Avatar" seems to be praised and lambasted in equal measure. The film's script is often mocked for its simple dialogue, poor characterization, and embarrassing "going native" conceit. At the same time, though, one cannot fault the film for its dazzling special effects. Cameron utilized the most advanced computers available to visually realize Pandora and the Na'Vi, making them look as realistic as he could. And he succeeded. The effects are legitimately amazing. Say what you will about the story, "Avatar" is one of the slickest movies ever made.

The lead visual effects company on "Avatar" was the New Zealand-based Wētā FX, the studio responsible for the "Lord of the Rings" movies, and many others. The sheer volume of digital effects famously drove prices up on "Avatar," leaving its budget somewhere close to $237 million. As we all know, though, "Avatar" made all that money back and then some.

Tom Hardy’s Havoc Gets a Lukewarm Rotten Tomatoes Score — But Here’s Why It’s Still Worth Watching
Image
Tom Hardy’s Havoc(Photo Credit –YouTube)

A relatively low-profile Hollywood action thriller has quietly made its way on a streaming platform. We are talking about ‘Havoc’, which features the dashing Hollywood actor Tom Hardy in the lead role.

Havoc’s Lukewarm Rotten Tomatoes Score

Tom Hardy’s Havoc currently holds a rather underwhelming critics’ score of 67% on reviews aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes (based on 33 reviews so far). 67% is not a bad score, but it’s not very good either. Despite the lukewarm Rt score, we still think the latest Tom Hardy movie is worth checking out.

Why & Who Should Watch Tom Hardy’s Havoc?

We’ll come straight to the point. The movie Havoc was helmed by Welsh filmmaker Gareth Evans, who directed the widely acclaimed action movie The Raid, followed by its equally explosive sequel, The Raid 2. Both of these Indonesian action thriller films received critical acclaim...

Grave Of The Fireflies: All About The World’s Most Depressing Animated Masterpiece Behind Studio Ghibli’s Brightest Year
Image
Exploring The Tragedy Behind Studio Ghibli’s Animated Masterpiece, Grave Of The Fireflies ( Photo Credit – Netflix )

1988 could be called Studio Ghibli‘s defining year. It is the time when they released not just one but two cinematic juggernauts as a double feature, so opposite in tone that they practically orbit different emotional planets. One was Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro, a soft breeze of joy wrapped in childhood wonder, and the other was Isao Takahata’s Grave of the Fireflies, which felt like getting your soul wrung out and left to dry in the aftermath of war.

Where Grief Becomes Story

While Totoro danced through sun-soaked fields and soot sprites, Grave of the Fireflies dropped like an emotional bomb. Don’t get me wrong, it is not the kind that explodes outward but the kind that detonates quietly in your chest, echoing long after the credits roll. It is...

Casablanca: The Secret Behind This Iconic Scene From Humphrey Bogart’s Classic Romantic Drama Will Blow Your Mind!
Image
Exploring The Secret Behind Casablanca’s Iconic Farewell Scene! ( Photo Credit – Prime Video )

One of cinema’s most iconic moments, the farewell between Rick and Ilsa in Casablanca, wasn’t quite what it seemed. That fog-laden scene, with Humphrey Bogart’s Rick and Ingrid Bergman’s Ilsa standing in front of a plane poised for takeoff, has etched itself into the DNA of film history as a powerful and timeless image. But behind the magic, a surprising truth about its production emerges, even to this day.

The Foggy Goodbye That Fooled Everyone

Casablanca, filmed during the Second World War, had to contend with the strict limitations imposed by wartime conditions. One of those restrictions was filming at an airport after dark, a challenge that would have doomed the desired final scene.

With a budget stretched thin and time constraints in full swing, the production turned to ingenuity. The “airport” was actually a carefully crafted set,...

When Pirates of the Caribbean Was Called ‘The Worst Idea Ever’ But Made $654 Million At The Box Office
Image
Pirates of the Caribbean: Jack Sparrow on the Black Pearl(Photo Credit –Facebook)

Back in 2003, the idea of making a big-budget pirate movie raised more eyebrows than enthusiasm in Hollywood. The genre had a rocky history, expensive flops and forgotten adventures made pirate films feel more like cinematic quicksand than treasure troves. So when Disney announced a film based on a theme park ride, industry whispers labeled it a high-stakes gamble. A supernatural sea tale with undead pirates, cursed gold, and a rum-loving anti-hero?

It sounded like a storm waiting to sink a ship. But what followed was a cinematic twist no one saw coming. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl didn’t just survive the tide, it surfed it to global glory. With charm, chaos, and a whole lot of eyeliner, the film carved out its legacy, proving that sometimes, the riskiest voyages bring back the biggest treasure.

Biggest Celebrity Scandals
Image
Biggest Celebrity Scandals, where fame turns into a circus, and reputations crumble faster than a house of cards in a hurricane. Hollywood isn’t just about talent, it’s also a stage for outrageous fiascos, jaw-dropping betrayals, and PR disasters so disastrous they deserve their own museum. One minute, a celebrity is adored; the next, they’re being roasted on every social media platform known to mankind.

Some scandals are so mind-boggling they make you question reality, like when someone gets caught red-handed but still insists, “It’s not what it looks like.” Others spiral out of control in real-time, with fans, haters, and long-lost acquaintances chiming in like it’s a neighborhood gossip session. Relationships implode, careers nosedive, and somewhere in the chaos, a publicist is probably chugging coffee, trying to fix the unfixable.

Jennifer Lawrence in Red Sparrow, Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars, and Sean Diddy Combs...

For years, fans have been clear about one thing: there's no Pirates of the Caribbean without Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow. Although things have been creaky when it comes to Pirates of the Caribbean 6, Disney is reportedly trying anything to bring Depp back.

Amid his legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard and her allegations, Johnny Depp lost several major roles in franchises like Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean and Warner Bros.' Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts. However, Disney wanted the Pirates to keep sailing, yet fans have been adamant that it wouldn't happen without Depp. Per a new update from The Daily Express, the House of Mouse is reportedly close to bringing Depp back.

The rumors that Johnny Depp would be a part of Pirates of the Caribbean 6 have been going on for years, as Disney has been working on a new film in the multi-billion-dollar franchise for years.

Johnny Depp Reportedly in "Advanced Talks" to Play Jack Sparrow in a New Pirates of the Caribbean Movie in 2026
Image
Johnny Depp could be closer than ever to making a shocking comeback to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, according to a new report. Despite having been booted out of the Disney saga following his legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard, Depp’s slow but sure comeback could apparently be complete by returning to the role of Jack Sparrow for a sixth Pirates movie.

According to The Express, a deal to bring Depp back to Disney’s juggernaut adventure franchise is “very close” and the actor is in “advanced” talks to reprise his Jack Sparrow role. For many, this could be a hard thing to believe considering the fallout of Depp’s fall from grace, and his adamant stance that he would never work with Disney again after the way they treated him during the time of his alleged “wife-beating” and the numerous trials that followed.

The report claims a...

It’s a Small World Dolls Hair Grows and Requires Cutting and Other Creepy Facts
Image
It’s a Small World is an incredibly popular attraction at Disney Parks. Based on the original ride for he 1964 World’s Fair, all but the California Disneyland versions are copies. However, both the Disneyland and Walt Disney World rides have some creepy things in common. One of the creepiest fact to many is that the dolls need haircuts because their hair “grows.”

Just when you thought you couldn’t be more creeped out by the dolls, now you know their hair grows too? How?

Yes, the doll animatronics on the “It’s a Small World” ride have to have yearly haircuts because their yarn hair “grows.”

The yarn stretches out over time due to humidity from the water in the attraction, making it “grow.” Because of this issue, the animatronics do receive haircuts at least once a year to combat an unkept look.

This fact does not make them alive,...

From Dungeons to Dragons: The Hidden Influence of Dungeons & Dragons on Today’s TV and Film Worlds
Image
Innovative storytelling techniques and immersive worldbuilding in today's popular series and films reflect the enduring legacy of a game that has captivated imaginations for decades. Created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson and first published by Tactical Studies Rules (Tsr) in January 1974, Dungeons & Dragons quickly gained popularity, selling about a thousand copies just in its first year and tripling that amount by the following year, instantly establishing itself as the pioneer of modern role-playing games. Yet, its first burst of massive popularity happened in the early 1980s, when it quickly became entangled with pop culture. Unfortunately, the catalytic Satanic Panic saw its paranoical rise during that same decade. The game's fantasy elements, like spells and monsters, gave rise to religious groups that falsely linked the game to real-life Satanism practices. This led Tsr to change the game, removing demons and other supernatural creatures and classes like The Assassin and Monk.

Orlando Bloom wants to return to ‘The Lord of the Rings’.The 48-year-old actor portrayed the elf Legolas from 2001’s ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ until ‘The Return of the King’ in 2003 - and then again in ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy - and has now teased he would want to reprise the role if series director Peter Jackson ever asked him to.Speaking on a panel at AwesomeCon, Bloom said: "I always think that if Pete says, ‘Jump’, I say, ‘How high?’"It's funny because I think the elves go through so much of this world so many times because they're ageless. I was in ‘The Hobbit’, and it was really interesting revisiting the world. It was so different from ‘Rings’ as an experience. "It was a beautiful time, but this idea of kind of going back is like ... ‘Absolutely, who wouldn't want to go back to that place?’"Even so,...

How Disney can compete with Epic Universe (with one addition)
Image
If you're anything like this writer, you've no doubt seen all the clips and exciting developments from Universal's newest addition, Epic Universe. While this is certainly big news for fans of Universal Studios, it might mean some serious crowd competition for the House of Mouse.

With all the latest controversy surrounding some of the recent live-action remakes, it might be time for Disney to start funneling that money back toward the theme parks, especially since Walt Disney World has been living off Disneyland's scraps for years. While Disney has a lot of growing to do, there is one alteration they can certainly keep in mind.

The more the merrier, fixing Disney's rides

Previews for Epic Universe have been loaded with ride footage, primarily from Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment in Dark Universe, and the Ministry of Magic attraction. While these rides all look incredible, they have one thing in...

When Jim Carrey Kept Losing Major Roles To Johnny Depp
Image
Did Jim Carrey lose a lot of roles to Johnny Depp?(Photo Credit –Facebook/Instagram)

It started way back in 1990. Jim Carrey was still carving out a name in comedy clubs and sketch shows. But even then, he was already circling big-screen dreams. According to Vulture, he was in the running to play Edward in Edward Scissorhands. So were Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. But Tim Burton had other plans. He handed the blades to Johnny Depp, and launched a cinematic bromance that would span decades.

Over the next two decades, Depp starred in Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Sweeney Todd, Corpse Bride, and more Burton fever dreams. Meanwhile, Carrey watched from the sidelines… until 1994 hit like a supercharged comedy cannon.

That year, Carrey went from “that guy on In Living Color...
