Evil Season 3 Episode 8
Evil, season 3 episode 8 “The Demon of Parenthood” is a mother of an episode. It goes so far over the top in its conspiratorial suspense the entire proceedings veer dangerously close to spoof. The opening scene between Father David (Mike Colter) and Victor LeConte (Brian d’Arcy James) would have worked on Get Smart. The circuitous language is as audaciously audible in the private confessional as the Cone of Silence at the Chief’s office at Control. The week’s case comes off as a self-parody even before the monster-of-the-week gives Ben (Aasif Mandvi) the finger.
Say what you want about Evil, it never loses its entertainment value. We may stretch imaginations or roll eyes, but we don’t look away. Some of the gore effects may be tempting, but the payoffs are always worth the effort. It is because it plays so close to comedy the fears work,...

Tahereh Saeedi, the wife of imprisoned Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, has described her husband’s recent imprisonment as being tantamount to “a kidnapping”.
Panahi has been in custody since July 12 after going to the prosecutor’s office in Tehran to follow up on the whereabouts of filmmakers Mohammad Rasoulof and Mostafa Al-Ahmad after they were arrested a few days previously.
It emerged on Monday (July 18) that the Iranian authorities had decided to reactivate a suspended six-year sentence originally meted out to Panahi in 2010 alongside a 20-year filmmaking and travel ban.
His detention comes amid a clampdown on freedom of expression in Iran as the government reins in a wave of popular protests about a raft of issues, including the cost-of-living crisis, the government’s handling of a deadly building collapse, and stricter dress codes for women.
Speaking to the BBC’s Persian service Saeedi said: “Jafar has some rights as a citizen.

The recent arrests and incarcerations of Iranian directors Mohammad Rasoulof, Mostafa Al-Ahmad and Jafar Panahi — all of whom have been locked up in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison in the space of less than a week — have been prompted by escalating tensions between the hard-line government of Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi and the West, according to experts.
“The government in Iran is sending a message to all of us around the world saying, ‘Things are getting worse,’ and this appears to be part of the nuclear deal negotiations and the geopolitical repercussions of what’s happening after the Russian invasion of Ukraine,” says Syrian multi-hyphenate Orwa Nyrabia, chair of the Berlin-based International Coalition for Filmmakers at Risk (Icfr), who is in close contact with the detained directors.

The Cannes Film Festival has joined the chorus of calls for the release of Iranian filmmakers Mostafa Al-Ahmad, Mohammad Rasoulof and Jafar Panahi after they were arrested by Iranian authorities in recent days.
The latest crackdown on dissent in Iran saw Al-Ahmad and Rasoulof arrested on Friday over the posting of social media statements that urged Iranian security force members to lay down their weapons used against protesters. And on Monday, Iranian filmmaker Panahi was also arrested in Tehran.
Panahi has screened many of his films at Cannes and other international festivals, including Three Faces and Crimson Gold. Panahi also won the Golden Bear in Berlin in 2015 for his film Taxi.

Pathé, France’s most successful independent distribution outfit, is in discussions to acquire a stake in Luc Besson’s financially ailing EuropaCorp, which revealed the negotiations Wednesday. The two companies have already been collaborating on domestic distribution of EuropaCorp movies in France.
“The group Pathé has expressed interest in a potential stake acquisition in the capital of the company,” EuropaCorp said in a statement. “This expression of interest, non-binding, is subject to the realization of several conditions precedent, in particular an agreement on the restructuring of the existing debts of the group.”
EuropaCorp, whose library includes successful franchises such as “Taken,” “Taxi” and “Transporter,” has a debt load of about €230 million ($270 million) and has been looking for a white knight for some time. It previously had unfruitful discussions with several companies such as Netflix, according to several sources. Earlier this month, it was granted a six-month debt waiver from a...

Gisele Bundchen's baller ride from her co-starring role in the 2004 movie, "Taxi," has a shot at history after saving its owner's life ... at least that's what the owner wants to see happen. Gisele made her acting debut as a bank robber -- opposite Jimmy Fallon and Queen Latifah -- and drove a bad ass 2003 BMW 760 Li for the role. 10 years later, Zach Schwatz from NY bought the whip for $14,500 from a production staffer. "Kids, throw another battery on the virtual fire and gather around. We want to tell you the story of the 2005 MTV Movie Awards. Jimmy Fallon was hosting, fresh off his Taxi remake with Queen Latifah. Don't laugh, that movie actually happened. Anyway. People were obsessed with these movies called Napoleon Dynamite and Mean Girls. Yes, we're talking about the same Mean Girls that is now required viewing in schools. But that's not what we want to talk about. We want to talk about one of Hollywood's most iconic couples: Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling. Now even though they both moved on to be really happy with other people, back in 2005, they were the only celeb couple that mattered. And they had a moment...

"That Justin Theroux guy - where do I know him from?" Depending on whom you ask, you could get a great many answers. Of course, he's the husband of Jennifer Aniston, but he's had a string of notable acting roles too. He could be that guy from The Leftovers, the actor who played the hapless director character in Mulholland Drive, Leslie Knope's short-lived boyfriend on Parks and Recreation, or even the bad guy from Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. However, Theroux is also a screenwriter, and he's credited with a handful of major films that casual movie-goers might not associate with him.

PlayStation Experience 2015 is kicking off in San Francisco today with the keynote speech. Sony set the bar pretty high last year with their inaugural conference, and their conference game generally has been strong in the last couple of years. Is this going to continue the trend, or is this where it all goes downhill? Let’s find out.
The keynote kicks off with an Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End trailer. The graphics are phenomenal. We see Nate meet up with his brother, Sam, voiced by Troy Baker, after a long time apart. It appears there’s dialogue options in the new game. The PlayStation friendly crowd cheered for that. No new gameplay was shown, but at this point, we don’t need it. And nor should we want it. Given the track record of Naughty Dog, Uncharted 4 should be a stellar action game, and the less we know about it the better.

Today’s Depression Lesson concerns chorus girl hunger.Mabel wants to throw Minnie down a flight of stairs during the extended tap number. But put Mabel in a fedora in some greasy alley and call it hardboiled—art is born! Or at least “cinema history.” How else to describe that slyly overdetermined look in his eye? He’s the honeysuckle knuckle. Yes, James Cagney as chorus girl! The out-of-breath little bulldog, gnawing at the curtains. (He eats curtains for breakfast and shits thumbtacks.) Imploding/exploding rotating choreography, a screen presence momentarily in the shape of a tough guy—is he looking for trouble? Or the right shade of nail varnish? We can’t say for certain why in his personal life he did things like call his wife “Bill.” And yet, presence is legible… Sort of… Angry mincing ballerina steps as he circles his opponent. When Jimmy glims a beautiful dame,...

Has it actually been ten years already since we have been engaged in the realm of films dating back to 2004? A decade is certainly a long period of time to build our appreciation for cinema up until this critical point in 2014. In looking back at 2004, one can recall fondly some of the more desirable releases to come out at that time. For instance, the superb Million Dollar Baby was the Academy Award-winning film for 2004. Even the comedies that were released that year gave movie audiences cause to rejoice with such ditties as the sleeper indie hit Napoleon Dynamite and well as mainstream laughers in Mean Girls and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy.
Unfortunately for every gem there is a dud and then some. And 2004 had its share to say the least. So how about getting nostalgic and recalling some of the notable misses that were heaped on misled moviegoers...

Jeff Gordon was alleged to be gay and in a relationship with out former Nascar driver Stephen Rhodes in a satire piece that was mistaken for legitimate news.

Mark Kermode: cop-couple cliches abound as Kevin Hart joins Ice Cube for a dreary ride
An action-comedy short on both action and comedy, this turgid dirge recycles all the usual mismatched cop-couple cliches (from 48 Hours to Cop Out) with dreary results. Ice Cube is the rock-hard detective willing to bend rules and break heads in pursuit of justice; Kevin Hart is the wannabe new recruit who's hot to become both a cop and Cube's new brother-in-law. Hilarious! Together, they run around swapping wisecracks and bickering until finally a massive warehouse blows up and Laurence Fishburne shows everyone how to shoot people in the chest properly. Displaying little of the flair that made Taxi an unexpected hit, director Tim Story plods through on autopilot, keeping the noisy bangs turned up loud enough to cover the sound of no one laughing at the jokes.

Later this year we're getting a comedy called The Interview focusing on an attempt by the CIA to have a TV producer (Seth Rogen) and his talk show host personality (James Franco) being trained to kill the leader of North Korea under the guise of a high profile interview (it's one of my most anticipated films of 2014). Now THR has word that Ride Along and Taxi director Tim Story (who also directed the two terrible Fantastic Four movies) will direct another comedy called Diplomats, inspired by former NBA player Dennis Rodman's relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, song of the late, diabolical Kim Jong-il. Rodman's two trips to North Korea have made headlines, and this video from one of them went viral: The trips have been dubbed "hoops diplomacy," though it just seems like Rodman is enjoying being idolized by this creepy, powerful man who is still...

Jimmy Fallon is only a few days away from taking over at The Tonight Show, but his road to success has not been always been an easy one. The 39-year-old, along with his wife Nancy Juvonen, opens up in the latest issue of Parade about overcoming professional and personal hardships and how they got to where they are today. "You're a little depressed that you're not wanted," Fallon revealed about a low point in his career, after the release of Taxi in 2004 and Fever Pitch in 2005. "We'd go out to bars, have drinks, and I'd sing with the band." He continued: "It wasn't like I was blacking out or getting into fights." Juvonen added that Fallon was "just...

Jimmy Fallon has big shoes to fill as he takes over The Tonight Show starting next week, but he's ready - thanks to his 6-month-old daughter, Winnie. As he explains in the Feb. 16 issue of Parade, the way she "squeals and chirps" makes him and his wife, Nancy Juvonen, feel like they're "in a Disney cartoon." All joking aside, Jimmy is more than ready - albeit nervous - for this "insane" opportunity starring on the historical late-night show, and he already has two dream guests in mind: Queen Elizabeth and Pope Francis. "I'd make it fun for them," he promised. Keep reading for more from Jimmy's Parade cover story, including the sweet story about him falling in love with his wife, some tough memories from a decade ago when he had two back-to-back box-office flops, and an emotional video about his career move. Oh, and if you're wondering what...

Let's get one thing out of the way first, Kevin Hart is hilarious. Even in a toned down, third-rate, PG-13 buddy comedy like Ride Along he's hilarious. However, when I see it took four people -- Greg Coolidge, Jason Mantzoukas, Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi -- to write a screenplay that could just as easily be outlined on a napkin before handed over to Hart while telling him to improvise the rest frustrates me. Of that lot only Mantazoukas has anything respectable to his credit while Hay and Manfredi have brought us the likes of R.I.P.D., Clash of the Titans and Aeon Flux. Suffice to say, without Hart, Ride Along would have been unwatchable. In the opening minutes we meet Ice Cube as hard-boiled detective James Payton, working undercover, attempting to learn the identity of some anonymous villain named Omar. Things go bad, the bad guys find out he's a...

When it comes to Ride Along, the new, unremarkable comedy starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube, it's a better use of everyone's time and focus to skip any detailed breakdown of the film's failings, and simply state that the laughs are minimal, and the actors have done better elsewhere. So, in direct contradiction with that statement, here's why: Ride Along is a police comedy from director Tim Story, the guy who gave us 2012's surprise hit Think Like a Man, Taxi with Queen Latifah and Jimmy Fallon, and both Fantastic Four movies. Here, Story's flair for comedy is merely moderate, and he only rarely utilizes the performance strengths of his stars. Consequently, it's a lot of by-the-numbers meandering through a pedestrian buddy cop adventure. The single...

People who choose local news broadcasts over the loftier network additions do so not for the quality of news, but the flavor with which it is delivered.
Like Danny, they would rather hear about foreign affairs from a local hot dog vendor than some on-location correspondent wearing too much makeup. Personally, I hardly ever watch the news at night, local or national. At the end of a long day, the last thing I want to listen to are a bunch of stories that sound like they were plucked from the headlines by the writers of Tosh.O and the Faces of Death film producers.
Instead of hearing about someone getting pushed onto the subway tracks or run over by a parade float, I prefer to laugh and let the day's stress fade away.
"Mindy's Minute" succeeded in helping me do just that, despite a rather ambitious slate of story lines.

Bridesmaids director Paul Feig is back with another comedy, The Heat starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. One is an uptight FBI agent and the other a foul-mouthed Boston police officer, I smell a sitcom!
They team up to take down a drug lord in this buddy cop movie, and going by the trailer isn’t as bad as Taxi with Jimmy Fallon and Queen Latifah. Why did I reference that movie? Saw it was listed on Netflix, wondered why.
Also, Thomas F. Wilson (ie. Biff Tannen from Back to the Future) is in it, so it’s pretty much a done deal.

"Reno 911!" co-creator and star Robert Ben Garant is set to direct the comedy film adaptation of 90's lifesaver series "Baywatch" at Paramount Pictures reports Vulture.
"Rescue Me" creator Peter Tolan penned the script which avoids the hammy drama of the original series in favour of something more akin to classic 80's comedy "Stripes". Or, more accurately, sends up the material the same way 'Reno' spoofed "Cops".
With Garant on board, it's likely the script will get further work as he has co-written such films as "Night at the Museum," "Balls of Fury," "The Pacifier," "Taxi" and "Herbie: Fully Loaded". Ivan Reitman is producing.

His days of SNL corpsing long behind him, Jimmy Fallon since became one of the more successful, affable late night talk show hosts we have today. (Even though this is a world with Jay Leno, where the competition can only be much less severe.) It’s only been about three years since he started holding that job — his previous career proceeded by, again, years of being the person who ruins skits — but all his work in that field might soon pay off in a big way.
The La Times have learned that Fallon and his old SNL boss, Lorne Michaels, are in talks with The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to host and produce, respectively, next year’s Academy Awards ceremony. (One of the academy’s spokespeople claim no such thing is happening; three sources report to the contrary.) Given his age, level of celebrity, and participation in Taxi,...

When Jimmy Fallon was announced as the replacement for Conan O’Brien’s old Late Night job, the decision was met with disdain. Fallon was mainly known as “that guy from Saturday Night Live who always laughed during sketches”, and his film career, made up of Taxi and Fever Pitch, wasn’t very promising either. Even though Fallon was surrounded with talent, from SNL legends Steve Higgins and Michael Shoemaker to the beloved hip-hop group The Roots as his house band, the public’s attitude for the upcoming show ranged from disinterest to negativity.
The show premiered on March 2, 2009, and it wasn’t pretty. Fallon was visibly nervous and sweaty, and his first guest, Robert De Niro, was a horrible interviewee. Fallon’s show was largely written off after a few weeks and deemed a dud. But the show kept going, even though no one seemed to show much of a interest in it.

Since starting his studio career off strong with the solid hit “Barbershop,” director Tim Story then slowly turned in a string of mediocre releases (“Taxi,” “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer”) that finally had folks questioning how he made off so well the first time. However, things changed crucially at the start of 2012, as his adaptation of Steve Harvey's book, “Think Like a Man,” garnered both critical and box office acclaim (clocking in at $91 million domestic), as well as a brewing sequel. And now Story has taken his newfound clout to a promising comedy project alongside a former collaborator who was there from the beginning. After years languishing in the shadows over at New Line while the studio argued over casting, Universal has announced they've acquired the comedy “Ride Along” in turnaround and nabbed Story to direct the film too. Unlike New Line though, Universal has a pretty clear idea about.

Manchester, Tennessee — The 11th annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival kicked off Thursday with a characteristically diverse mix of artists representing funk, blues, hip-hop, reggae, electronic, indie rock and even mariachi.
The rootsy Alabama Shakes, who broke earlier this year, nabbed a closing spot on opening night, grooving through "Hang Loose" and their first single, "Hold On." Frontwoman Brittany Howard had the crowd feeling her pain as she wailed "Rise to the Sun."
For photos from Bonnaroo, click here.
Kendrick Lamar brought his West Coast gangsta rap to the dirty South. And while he clearly had many fans in the crowd — spitting along to "P & P" and "A.D.H.D." — he took time to address a vocal hater in the front row. "He's telling us that...

Amendment One in North Carolina has passed. In what may be one of the more tasteless ways to celebrate passage by the right, backers planned to serve wedding cake at their party.
Meanwhile, in the House of Representatives, two anti-gay amendments for the National Defense Authorization Act have been prepared with a who's-who of anti gay groups, including the Alliance Defense Fund, the National Organization for Marriage and the Family Research Council. One would give huge latitude to military chaplains to preach hate from the pulpit on government bases, and the other would assert Doma more strongly as it relates to military affairs.
Kansas Republican Rep. Huelskamp is planning an amendment to the Justice Department authorization bill that would bar the Justice Department from using any funds to oppose the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, as it has been doing in cases around the country.

Clara Bow, Mantrap What do Andrei Tarkovsky, Edward G. Robinson, Clara Bow, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Audrey Hepburn have in common? Easy. They'll all be featured in some form or other at the Library of Congress' Packard Campus in Culpeper, Virginia, in May. [Packard Campus screening schedule.] Andrei Tarkovsky will be represented by the classic sci-fier Solaris (1971), billed as the Soviet Union's answer to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, and by the classic period drama Andrei Rublev (1969), a meditation on art, religion, spirituality, and human brutality and stupidity. A technicality: Solaris will actually be screened on April 27. Edward G. Robinson stars in The Little Giant (1933), a pre-Code crime comedy featuring Mary Astor. The (at the time) energetic Roy Del Ruth (The Maltese Falcon, Taxi!, Employees' Entrance) directed. Clara Bow is the star of Mantrap (1926), a fluffy romantic comedy of interest chiefly because of Bow and because neither of her two leading...

Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant are funny guys (just look at Reno 911!), but when it comes to feature films I’ve always been left disappointed. With studio comedies such as Taxi, Let’s Go to Prison, Balls of Fury and Night at the Museum films, they’ve never lived up to their long-running parody show. Deadline now reports that 20th Century Fox has hired to the duo write the feature remake of the popular ’70s/’80s British kids comedy show Rentaghost.
With the announcement, we also get the news that their Museum star Ben Stiller will come on as lead, stepping in for the previously attached Russell Brand. 20. Elvis Presley
The King of Rock and Roll's movie career is both the archetype and warning for every single performer on this list. "Love Me Tender," Presley's first of 33 films, made him a even bigger star than he was when it was released in 1956. But through the 1960s, the singer -- more specifically his manager Colonel Tom Parker -- favored quantity over quality, releasing a slew of critically panned films that watered down his once unshakeable sound. The worldwide celebrity continued yet the results were now unpredictable.
19. Janet Jackson
A perennial television star in the 1970s and '80s -- remember Willis' girlfriend Charlene from "Diff'rent Strokes?" -- Jackson made the transition to film in 1993 in John Singleton's "Poetic Justice," a romantic road trip film featuring Tupac Shakur. Singleton's follow-up to "Boyz n the Hood" was a surprise hit, though Jackson chose to focus primarily on her music through the next decade.

A familiar face will be back on "Saturday Night Live" December 17 as Jimmy Fallon makes his return to the weekend comedy show.
Fallon had a six-year run with the NBC program from 1998-2004, with three years as a co-anchor of the show's famed Weekend Update. His tenure with "SNL" also included his spot-on impersonations of Barry Gibb and Carson Daly.
Fallon's post-"SNL" years had a slow start with lead roles in forgettable films like "Taxi" and "Fever Pitch." But in March 2009, he took over for Conan O'Brien during NBC's late-night musical chairs period. Since then Fallon, 36, has thrived in the 12:30 a.m. Et time slot, capturing the ratings crown from CBS's "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" and ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live."
Fallon will be joined by musical guest and Grammy-winner Michael Buble who is making his second trip to 30 Rock for the show.
