Plot: Two backpacking Canadians (Julia Garner & Jessica Henwick) find themselves low on cash and work as bartenders in a small pup in a remote mining town in Australia.
Review: Kitty Green’s The Royal Hotel is exceptional for about ninety percent of its running time. Beautifully shot at an abandoned bar in Yatina, South Australia, a town that consists of only twenty-nine people, the movie is a thoroughly compelling look at the culture of booze, brawling, and misogyny in remote Australia and what happens when two regular, North American girls are dropped right in the middle of it. But, the finale gets a little too close to straight-ahead thriller territory, ending what had up to then been a compelling drama about menace and the constant threat of violence on a somewhat false note. It starts like Wake in Fright but ends like Straw Dogs, and the switch-up doesn’t work.

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival. Neon releases the film in theaters on Friday, October 6.
Following 2019’s deeply unnerving “The Assistant” with another razor-sharp Julia Garner collaboration, Australian filmmaker Kitty Green has decided to strand her favorite actress in one of the few places on Earth more dangerous for a young woman than Harvey Weinstein’s production office: A shithole bar on the border of an ultra-remote mining town so deep within the Australian outback that no one there has even heard of the #MeToo movement. Welcome to “The Royal Hotel.”
The good news is that Garner’s character isn’t alone; Hanna’s on an open-ended vacation with her friend Liv (Jessica Henwick) when the two run out of money on a party boat in Sydney and decide to sign up for the last Work & Travel job available. The bad news is...

Annihilation (Alex Garland)
More terrifying than any creature Hollywood could dream up is the unraveling of one’s mind—the steady loss of a consciousness as defined by the memories, motivations, and knowledge built up from decades of experience and reflection. With Annihilation, Alex Garland’s beautiful, frightening follow-up to Ex Machina, he portrays this paralyzing sensation with a sense of vivid imagination, and also delivers a cadre of horrifying creatures to boot. – Jordan R. (full review)
Where to Stream: Netflix
Barbarian (Zach Cregger)

With apologies to Guns N’ Roses: Don’t take me down to the Asteroid City / Where the tropes are tired and the gags ain’t witty / Make it stop (Oh, won’t you please make it stop).
To clarify an important point upfront, I’m no Wes Anderson hater. I get that he’s the most parody-able of contemporary American directors, with his taste for painstakingly designed retro-theatrical artifice, for boxes within narrative boxes, for framing and camera movement choices identifiable from a mile away, characters that drip drolleries and plots that plunge fearlessly into manneristic preciousness. But when all the elements click into place, Anderson’s manicured worlds can be enchanting places to visit. Or they can be suffocating constructs that wring all the charm out of his signature storytelling style. Which brings us to Asteroid City.

A lot of Academy Award winners get weepy, sentimental and downright ugly in their speeches. One such Oscar winner is Gwyneth Paltrow, who gave an over-the-top speech that began humbly enough before it quickly turned into a sobfest that is often cited as one of the cringiest acceptance speeches ever.
On the Call Her Daddy podcast, Gwyneth Paltrow discussed both the origins of her emotions and the backlash she faced after winning Best Actress for Shakespeare in Love. “I cried and people were so mean about it and I just thought, ‘Wow there’s this big energy shift that’s happening. I think I’m going to have to learn to be less openhearted and much more protective of myself and filter people out better.’…I remember I was working in England…and I remember the British press being so horrible to me because I cried. The 5 Seconds of Summer Show, the tenth anniversary celebration that the pop-rock band hosted at the close of 2021, was part career-spanning concert film and part Saturday Night Live skit poking fun at their decade-long evolution. It featured a recreation of the video for one of their earliest releases — 2012’s “Gotta Get Out” — alongside their biggest hits, like “Youngblood” and “She Looks So Perfect,” and a funeral for their faded black skinny jeans. But the one thing that has never changed about 5Sos is their commitment to delivering an unrelenting live show.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry underestimated how far down the “pecking order” they would be in Hollywood, according to one of Meghan’s former friends. The Sussexes believed they would be more prominent in LA after leaving the royal family, but it hasn’t played out that way.

Everything Beyoncé touches turns to gold. Or, at least, into Grammy Awards when it comes to her musical work. The Destiny’s Child frontwoman turned powerhouse solo act has been racking up the statuettes since 2001, when Say My Name won for Best R&b song. Since then, she’s continued to earn an avalanche of nominations and trophies for her lyrics and performances.
It’s hard to understate the star power that comes with someone like Beyoncé. She has become ubiquitous with success and fame over the course of her illustrious career. However, some accolades remain elusive for the performer. One of those is the coveted Egot status: the so-called “grand slam” of the entertainment industry that happens when a person wins an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. Only 18 people have achieved this in history — most recently Viola Davis with her win at the Grammys in February. And while Beyoncé...

In 1980, the auspiciously named first baseman Willie Mays Aikens made baseball history when he hit two home runs in two World Series games, a feat that wasn’t repeated until 2009. That year, the Kansas City Royals player was second in home runs and RBIs only to teammate, friend and future Hall of Famer, George Brett.
Directed by Marcel Sarmiento, “The Royal” isn’t obsessed with Aikens’ on-the-field triumphs. Instead — with a script by Gregory W. Jordan, based on the 2012 book he co-wrote with Aiken, “Willie Mays Aikens: Safe at Home” — the movie recounts what happened to the major league slugger after he served 14 years for crack cocaine possession and distribution.
In 1994, under the inequitable federal sentencing guidelines, Aikens was sentenced to more than 20 years for possession with intent to sell 50 grams of crack cocaine. (He’d have had to be in possession of five kilos of powdered coke to receive a similar sentence.

Henwick and Weaving join “Inventing Anna” star Julia Garner in the See-Saw Films production, which is based on a true story. Green and Garner previously collaborated on Green’s breakout hit “The Assistant,” which was inspired by the dramatic fall of Harvey Weinstein.
In “The Royal Hotel,” Garner plays Hannah who, alongside her best friend Liv (Henwick) goes backpacking in Australia. After running out of money the women take a live-in job in The Royal Hotel, a bar located in a remote mining town in the Australian outback.
Billy, the bar’s owner (played by Weaving) doesn’t hesitate to introduce the women to Australia’s hard-core drinking culture...

The precise dysfunctional family film set a template for the writer-director’s oeuvre and gave Gene Hackman and his on-screen offspring some of their greatest roles
“I had a rough year, dad.”
The whole of Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums builds to those six words, one syllable each. The line carries the weight of a family entombed by two decades of failure, depression and personal rancor, but finding some small path forward, a moment of reconciliation that might keep their disappointments from defining their future. Anderson has a gift for packing big emotions into small gestures – think about the look of recognition on Bill Murray’s face when he finally meets Max Fischer’s father in Rushmore – and this father-son moment pays off the countless other details that make it possible. This is why Anderson’s best work holds up so beautifully on repeat viewings: they’re dense with feeling,...

Actor whose best known role in a seven-decade career came in a Harry Potter film in her 80s
The actor Hazel Douglas, who has died aged 92, landed her most prominent role in her 80s, when she joined the starry cast of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010), as Bathilda Bagshot, the author of A History of Magic, a textbook used at Hogwarts school, and great-aunt of the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. And there were more performances to come in a stage and screen career that altogether spanned seven decades.
In the ITV series Vicious, Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi played Freddie and Stuart, a longstanding and quarrelsome couple. Hazel joined them in 2013 as Mildred, Stuart’s no-nonsense mother, failing to understand the relationship between the two men. In Elephants Can Remember, an episode of Agatha Christie’s Poirot from the same year with David Suchet, Zoë Wanamaker and Greta Scacchi,...

That’s really the only acceptable response to this week’s Outlander, unless your vocabulary and/or heritage means you’ve got a long stream of Gaelic curses handy for the yelling. Because good God, guys: Black Jack Randall is alive.
I don’t say that with surprise; like many of you, I’m familiar with the books and knew this moment was coming even before the first time Randall leered at Claire in the woods. Still, though, the mere idea that Randall lives — and that Jamie may eventually learn of his existence, too — is a juicy...

There is something very likable about Matt Berry, and it’s not just his awesome voice. The fact that we see him in many British comedies shows just how talented he is, and with Toast of London: Series Three we see him at his best.
It would be easy to believe that Steven Toast is Matt Berry, the character feels like the ones we’ve seen him play before. In Toast of London though we see him sending up the stereotypical “Luvvies” acting community that we usually see haunting the streets of London looking for their next job.
Each episode of the show typically sees Toast being given a job by his “old school” agent Jane Plough (Doon Mackichan) and given some bad advice by his housemate Ed Howzer-Black (Robert Bathurst). What makes Toast of London interesting though is not only the outlandish characters that we meet, but also...

The producers of The Bodhi Tree have optioned two novels by Paul Conroy as the basis for the film based on the true-life story of Max Green, a Melbourne tax lawyer who embezzled millions of dollars and laundered some of the money by buying gems.
Green was found murdered in his hotel room during a one-night stopover in Cambodia in 1998.
Robert Lewis Galinsky is writing the screenplay and serving as executive producer, collaborating with actors-turned- producers Mirko and Amanda Grillini.
An A-list Australian director has read the treatment and is awaiting the script which is due to be delivered early in 2015, Galinsky tells If.
The primary source material is Conroy.s novels Lawyers, Gems and Money and 10 Months in Laos. The latter deals with Australian couple Kerry and Kay Danes, who in 2000 were arrested and accused of stealing gems and cash from a gem mining company in the Laos capital of Vientiane,...

Bill Hader has come a long way since his stint on Saturday Night Live, creating many popular characters and impersonations such as Stefon, Vincent Price and CNN’s Jack Cafferty. He is one of the highlights in such films as Adventureland, Knocked Up, Superbad and Pineapple Express, and so it is easy to see why author Mike Sacks interviewed him for his new book Poking A Dead Frog. In it, Hader talks about his career and he also lists 200 essential movies every comedy writer should see. Xo Jane recently published the list for those of us who haven’t had a chance to read the book yet. There are a ton of great recommendations and plenty I haven’t yet seen, but sadly my favourite comedy of all time isn’t mentioned. That would be Some Like It Hot. Still, it really is a great list with a mix of old and new.

Oldham College is leading the way on national digital developments with involvement at two prestigious events in London recently - one at the House of Commons with the Skills Minister - and the TeenTech Awards with celebrities including Stephen Fry and James May.
Both unique opportunities reflect Oldham College’s expertise in digital and creative industries, which will be showcased later this year with the opening of the UK’s first ever Digital Career College.
On Tuesday 24 June, Oldham College Principal Alun Francis was invited to the House of Commons for a meeting hosted by Lord Baker in association with the Career Colleges Trust. Career Colleges were launched by Lord Baker last year as a new innovation in employer-led education, combining academic and vocational studies within a specific industry specialism. Educational and industry leaders discussed the future of vocational education with Luke Johnson, Chair of the Career Colleges Trust and Guest of Honour, Matthew Hancock MP, Minister of State for Skills and Enterprise. Employers were called upon to make pledges, setting out how they could potentially help a Career College and what they could add.
Alun was joined by members of the Employers Advisory Board created to work on the development of the Digital Career College - Lawrence Jones, the CEO of UK Fast, one of the city’s fastest growing technology companies and Gail Jones, their Commercial Director and Liane Grimshaw, a consultant with 20 years’ experience in the creative and digital industries who is currently setting up SupaReal, a new digital marketing agency.
Oldham College Principal Alun Francis said: “This important initiative is a new relationship between education advisors and employers so that we bring the best education expertise and they bring their knowledge of the working environment and the skills they need. We are very pleased at the quality of employer partners on board and feel that we are the platform to provide a different kind of career choice for young people in Oldham.”
On Wednesday 25 June, Oldham College I.T. student Holly King, who is part of a new Young Digital TaskForce* was Master of Ceremonies for the TeenTech Awards at The Royal Society. Initiated by Ed Miliband, the Young Digital TaskForce was recently set up to help shape the UK’s digital future. Maggie Philbin, broadcaster and TaskForce lead, who is keen for students to be involved in influencing national digital policy, said: “The views of young people are crucial to finding a solution to the technology and digital skills gap.” Maggie was so impressed by Holly’s input at the inaugural TaskForce meeting, that she personally invited her to Mc the award ceremony.
The TeenTech Awards, which included a visit from their patron Hrh Duke of York, involved students from across the UK showcasing their ideas for how to make life better simpler or easier. Their projects were judged by a range of well-known people within the science and technology communities. Holly enjoyed the privilege of introducing and sharing stage space with celebrities including Stephen Fry, James May, Maggie Philbin as well as various BBC presenters.
Oldham College’s pioneering facility, the new Digital Career College, will ensure students are both academically and practically prepared for work within technically and creatively driven industries. Alun Francis said: “We want to ensure that students learn what they need to progress whether that’s on to work, an Apprenticeship, or to university. Our curriculum is organised around different growth sectors of the economy and the pathways which students need to follow to work in these sectors.”
In his recent speech on Apprenticeships at the annual conference of the Association of Employment and Learning Providers, Matthew Hancock talked about how young people should all go on either to university or into an Apprenticeship after leaving school or college. He said: “It’s a huge opportunity, for Britain to become that high skilled economy we all crave and Apprenticeships that are the envy of the world; and for millions of future Apprentices, to know that Apprenticeships will deliver, higher quality across the board, skills relevant to the future, and give everyone in our country the opportunity to reach their potential.”
Oldham College is passionate about providing employment, training and educational opportunities for its communities and aims to help every student reach their full potential. The College offers a learning environment with industry standard facilities and has close links with many local, regional and national employers. These relationships enrich and broaden the courses the College offers as well as preparing students for progression into employment and higher education. For more information please visit Here

From the Nutcracker to American Psycho, from Mary Poppins to Kurt Vile, our critics pick their must-sees of the festive season
If you wish it could be Christmas every day
Nutcrackers, various
You know it's Christmas in the ballet world by the number of Nutcrackers touring the world's stages. In the UK alone, there are close to a dozen doing the rounds, but the top three remain the Royal Ballet's exquisitely traditional version, the sparky family friendly production by Birmingham Royal Ballet, and English National Ballet's – with the best snow scene of them all. Royal Opera House, London (020-7304 4000), 4 December to 16 January; Birmingham Hippodrome (0844 338 5000), to 12 December; London Coliseum (020-7845 9300), 11 December to 5 January.
Father Christmas
Does Father Christmas use the loo? Does he secretly long for summer? Does he have strong views on the size of chimneys? You bet he does. Raymond Briggs's gorgeous picture book gets a heartwarming makeover for under-sixes.

Henry Rollins takes to L.A. Weekly to wonder how the anti-gay forces of today are going to be able to face tomorrow. ”You realize that all those obnoxious 16-year-olds you see everywhere, texting their friends who are standing next to them, will be able to vote in the 2016 elections. Do you think you will be able to sell them on your anti-gay/anti-woman/anti-brown/black platform? Do you think they want to end up like you? I bet they don’t. Gov. Bobby Jindal said that you all have to stop being the stupid party. I don’t think you can do it. How did equality become political? Because you can’t handle science, change or the truth. America is on the move, you are not.”

Downton Abbey star Allen Leech has ruled out a romance between Branson and Lady Mary.
Series three of the hit period drama saw Branson (Leech) lose his wife Lady Sybil, while Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) found herself widowed in the show's 2012 Christmas special.
"While it would be great for drama, I don't think it would be right for those two [to get together]," the actor told TV Guide.
"As much as they respect each other, they come from very different worlds."
Welsh actor Tom Cullen was recently cast on Downton Abbey - he will appear in the show's fourth series as Lord Gillingham, a potential new love interest for Mary.
Also joining the cast are former EastEnders star Nigel Harman and The Royal actor Julian Ovenden.
Downton Abbey will return to ITV1 in autumn 2013.

The drama follows the lives of doctors and nurses working in a London hospital, a workplace that hides "a cauldron of lies, deceptions and guilty secrets, driven by love, ambition and sex".
Opening in 1961, Breathless will be written by Unwin, co-creator Peter Grimsdale and Simon Tyrell (Lightfields).

Emmerdale bosses have announced that four new characters will be joining the village this autumn. Bernice Blackstock's lover, a new father-daughter duo and an old acquaintance of Rhona Goskirk have all been cast as fresh faces for the ITV1 soap. First to arrive will be Rhona's wild friend from college Vanessa Woodfield, who has been tipped to shake up life at the vets' surgery. Played by The Royal actress Michelle Hardwick, Vanessa is billed as a "self-assured party girl" who will be "like a breath of fresh air" when she arrives at the vets' practice.
Michelle Hardwick as Vanessa Woodfield. While Vanessa is always up for a laugh, she is also plain-speaking and instantly clashes with Rhona's husband Paddy. Hardwick commented: "As a local girl and a fan of the show, Emmerdale is my dream job. (more)...
