Jason T. Reed, a veteran producer who spent 18 years as an exec at Disney overseeing a number of top franchises, has been named Head of Skydance Sports.
The division of David Ellison’s Skydance Media last year formally teamed with the NFL and NFL Films. Fresh off his appearance on IndieWire’s Best Performances of the 80s list, David Byrne will be bringing down the house — hopefully packed movie theater houses.
A24 is gearing up for its re-release of Jonathan Demme’s adored Talking Heads concert documentary “Stop Making Sense” at TIFF and in a Global IMAX Live event on September 11, with the film rolling out to the general public in the weeks after. Watch the trailer below.
The distributor had previously released a 40-second teaser that showed Byrne picking up his laundry and getting back… the big suit! The comically oversized, boxy suit the buttoned-down singer/songwriter wears during the latter part of the concert during songs like “Girlfriend Is Better.” In that teaser, he put it on again and did his trademark wiggle, the awkward-chic moves that, along with many other things, have endeared him to audiences the past four decades.

Exclusive: Schitt’s Creek alum Eugene Levy is heading to Summer Camp. The four-time Emmy winner will play Diane Keaton’s love interest in the comedy also set to star Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard.
Castille Landon (After franchise) is directing the film, which is heading into production next month in North Carolina, from her own script. It tells the story of Nora, Ginny and Mary, who have been best friends since childhood, spending their summers together inseparably at sleepaway camp. As the years have passed, they’ve seen each other less and less, so when the chance for a summer camp reunion arises, they all take it, some begrudgingly and others excitedly. Each of their lives might not be where they’d imagined, but one thing is for sure — Nora, Ginny, and Mary need each other, and summer camp reminds them why.

Pulling together an episode of "Saturday Night Live" is a rigorous, high-pressure exercise. Though creator-producer Lorne Michaels has the process down to a science of sorts after supervising the series for most of its 48 years on the air, the tight Monday-to-Saturday window leaves little room for refinement. Watch the fascinating 2010 documentary "Saturday Night," which examines a week in the life of the show, and you'll see some of the funniest people on the planet bomb repeatedly as they scramble to fill 67 minutes of airtime with reasonably funny material.
"SNL" has had its ups and downs over its remarkably long run, but if you ask long-time fans to name some of the series' most consistently funny performers, their list must include the Lonely Island trio of Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer. Their "Digital Shorts" were the most anticipated segments of the show, and they almost always delivered. Almost. No...

Queen Latifah has thrived in the entertainment business — from music to movies and television into the beauty industry and beyond — for more than 30 years. But the Grammy and Emmy winner and Oscar nominee doesn’t take time to reflect on her successes.

On this afternoon, though, it’s not about accolades; instead, she’s driving around town running errands. She’s just wrapped Season 2 of “The Equalizer,” the CBS reboot in which she stars as vigilante Robyn McCall. Good news for all you Brolin-heads! Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by one very intriguing TV project starring Thanos himself.

The synopsis is terse and reads “A rancher fighting for his land and family stumbles upon an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness, forcing a confrontation with the Unknown in ways both intimate and cosmic in the untamable American West.” That, combined with an enigmatic first trailer, has our interest piqued.
Also on the TV side of things this month is season 2 of the beautifully rotoscoped series Undone on April 29. Rosa Salazar returns as Alma, a woman who may have become unstuck in time to help save her scientist father’s life. Before that, the British TV series The Outlaws makes its debut...

Betty White, the Emmy-winning TV star who had a remarkable later-career resurgence in films, TV commercials and the hit series “The Golden Girls” and “Hot in Cleveland,” has died. She was 99.
The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a death investigation on the 500 block of N. Carmelina Ave. in Los Angeles at 9:30 a.m. Friday morning. White would have celebrated her 100th birthday on Jan. 17. White is believed to have died Thursday night at her Brentwood home.
White’s agent and close friend Jeff Witjas confirmed her death to Variety. “Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever,” Witjas said in a statement. “I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world that she loved so much. I don’t think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again.

“Schitt’s Creek” star and Canadian screen icon Eugene Levy has signed with UTA.
The multi-Emmy-winning actor, producer and writer is best known for co-creating, starring in and executive producing the critically acclaimed CBC and Pop series “Schitt’s Creek” alongside his son and co-star, Daniel Levy.

An army of Hollywood production companies are already getting to work on an array of projects centered around the recent GameStop stock chaos.
At least three feature films could come out of the story, in which retail traders mostly operating on the WallStreetBets subreddit bought and held massive amounts of GameStop stock in an attempted “short squeeze” — a play that would’ve forced financial institutions that had bet against GameStop to buy back shares at outrageously inflated prices. While the stock price of the video games retailer rose over $400 last week,...

Those who have seen the movie The Social Network will be familiar with the Winklevoss twins. Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss had plans to create an exclusive social network for Harvard students, but alleged that Mark Zuckerberg stole the idea from them, which eventually led to the creation of Facebook. The twins went on to file a lawsuit against Zuckerberg for this, and eventually settled with him, netting a decent amount in the process, but of course, that would have been peanuts compared to actually having a stake in Facebook. Nevertheless, the release of the movie brought the spotlight onto the twins, and they made further waves in recent times when they became the first ‘bitcoin billionaires’. Their initial investment into Bitcoin back when the cryptocurrency was first launched has now grown to the extent of being worth over a billion dollars. This story of a comeback through the cryptocurrency, as...

All streaming services go through a down period after the excitement of Spooky Season, it’s only natural. Thankfully with its list of new releases for November 2020, Hulu is making the best out of a barren pop culture landscape.
For starters, Hulu is premiering one of its major 2020 reboots this month as Animaniacs arrives on Nov. 20. Yakko, Wakko, Dot, and the rest of the Warner gang are set to return for this long-awaited revival of the animated classic. That’s about it as far as original series go but Hulu is also premiering original movies Greta, about climate activist Greta Thunberg on Nov. 13; and Run, a horror film starring Sarah Paulson, on Nov. 20.
Still, despite all the Animaniacs, Gretas, and Sarah Paulsons, the biggest hits this month might just be on the library content side of things. November 1 sees the arrival of some major TV properties. For starters, racy British...

Disney’s live-action take on its 1998 Oscar-nominated animated classic Mulan was intended, in all its colors and elaborate battles, to be seen on the big screen.
But because of the pandemic, and the unpredictable nature at which the box office marketplace is unfolding, Disney needs to win big on this $200M epic. Right now, with the entertainment conglomerate’s parks hampered by Covid-19 in parts of the world, what’s clicking for them right now is their streaming service, Disney+, particularly in the wake of their Independence Day launch of Hamilton. It’s what makes Wall Street go wild. Hence, opening Mulan offshore in territories that don’t have Disney+, and where ticket sales can be nothing but vibrant (i.e. China), and then hoping that families shell out an extra $30 to watch it on Disney+ on Sept. 4; it’s a business recipe that Covid-19 can’t curb.

Here are the plot pieces: An enigmatic card shark looking for an easy score. An ex-con with an inside track on a priceless haul of stolen art. Stephen King, horror man extraordinaire, has the Midas touch when it comes to spook-filled romps. The It adaptations were monstrous successes, his partnership with Mike Flanagan has proven fruitful for the both of them and now, adding to the exemplary TV layout of King’s properties will soon be a ‘Salem’s Lot prequel in the form of Jerusalem’s Lot, which is coming to Epix and has Adrien Brody attached as the star.
The series, which is going to be the first in-house production for Epix, already has a 10-episode order, is set to shoot next year and will be released in Fall 2020 for a spooky Halloween treat. We’ve also learned that writers Jason and Peter Filardi, the brothers who brought us Flatliners (both versions) and the awfully racist Bringing Down The House, have been tapped to pen the script – for some reason. Donald De Line, meanwhile, producer of Ready,...

Epix has given a 10-episode straight-to-series order to Jerusalem's Lot, a drama based on the short story by Stephen King to star Oscar winner Adrien Brody. The series is the first from Epix Productions as the Epix becomes the latest cable/premium network to launch an in-house production arm.
Jerusalem’s Lot hails from writers Peter and Jason Filardi and producer Donald De Line. Production is slated to begin in May 2020 in Halifax, Nova Scotia with an eye towards a fall 2020 premiere.
The project reunites Peter Filardi, King and Epix President Michael Wright. Salem’s Lot, a two-part TNT miniseries written by Filardi and King based on King’s 1975 novel, was one of the highest profile projects Wright shepherded as VP Movies and Miniseries at the Turner network. He went on to become Svp Original Programming for TNT, President and Head of Programming for TNT,...

It’s hard to define exactly what actor/comedian/musician Tim Heidecker does — the deliberate result of a Dead Sea-dry sense of humor that can make even his most committed supporters feel like they’re not always in on the joke — but if anything binds his various projects together it might be a consistent effort to explore the value of absurdity in an increasingly absurd world. You can see it in “The Comedy,” a semi-improvised satire in which Heidecker gave one of the decade’s great performances as a trust fund man-child who gets unmoored between irony and entropy. You can hear it on albums like “Too Dumb for Suicide: Tim Heidecker’s Trump Songs,” in which he mocks our reality TV president in order to grapple with the futility of mocking our reality TV president.
And you can watch it darken and metastasize for hours and hours and...

Earlier this year, Netflix released the highly-anticipated political documentary, “Bringing Down the House,” which followed a group of women, as they attempt to win coveted seats in the House of Representatives. Later this fall, Magnolia Pictures is hoping to capture the same audience’s attention with another political film about an underdog attempting to take down the establishment in a government election, titled “Mister America.”
As you can see in the trailer for “Mister America,” it’s not easy to win the office of District Attorney in the city of San Bernardino.

Top-level talent including Paul Feig, Gurinder Chadha and Anurag Kashyap are on board as leading Hollywood independent Hyde Park Entertainment makes a major launch into the Indian production scene. The company is headed by Ashok Amritraj, the highest-profile Indian executive based in Los Angeles.
The diversification move is made possible by the growing success of Indian film and TV content which is being propelled to new audiences overseas by global video streamers Netflix and Amazon. Within India, local streaming giants Hotstar, SonyLiv, and others, are similarly using Ott technology and cheap cellular data to reach nationwide audiences, many of which were not previously TV households.
To capitalize on Indian stories — and the exploding Indian series genre — the group is launching a new division Hyde Park Entertainment Asia to be headquartered in Chennai. Parent company Hyde Park will continue to produce and finance U.S. studio and independent films and television from Los Angeles,...

The legalisation of gambling in Nevada in 1931 established Las Vegas as the world’s gambling mecca. But it did more than that – it glamorised the gambling industry. Rumours regarding the flourishing gambling business in Las Vegas and its exuberance reached Hollywood, and before long the public could enjoy gambling movies in theatres all over the country. More than 80 years later, Marvel’s Blade Movie will show that casinos have a special place in the hearts of Hollywood film directors.
Actually The Matrix Slot is based on one of the most popular movies, but not all gambling movies are the same, though. In fact, most of them focus not on casino gaming itself, but rather on its glamour and magnificence – which is great, but we believe there is something even greater.
