Eminem
Film Review: Yukiko A.K.A (2024) by Naoya Kusaba
Eminem
The impact Eminem’s “8 Mile” had seem to still sent ripples in the movie industry, with this time, a similar story being transferred in Japan through the titular school teacher. In the end, however, and despite some similarities, “Yukiko A.K.A” is actually quite different.

Yukiko A.K.A is screening at Asian Pop Up Cinema

Yukiko, a 29-year-old elementary school teacher in Tokyo, lives a rather normal life, dealing with her students and retaining a relationship with a fellow teacher. However, she is also disgruntled with her life, particularly when she realizes that she is not one among the favorite teachers in the school, while her relationship is not as fulfilling as she expects. As such, she channels her frustration in hip-hop, rapping at nights in a park along with some similar-minded friends. When she loses miserably in a rap fight, however, she realizes that she needs to make a change.

A Cancelled Sequel To The Crow Could Have Starred Dmx And Eminem
Image
/Film has been dutifully reporting on all the failed "Crow" remakes as news of their formation as dissipation came across our desks. Back in 2008, Stephen Norrington was attached. Then, in 2014, it was Corin Hardy. Andrea Riseborough was supposed to be a part of that one. In 2016, it was said that Jason Momoa was going to star in a new "Crow" remake. Then that project fell apart. Rupert Sander's remake of "The Crow" was released in late August of 2024, and it came and went without much positive fanfare. It bombed at the box office, making only $26 million on a $50 million budget, and it was panned by critics, including by /Film. This was an inauspicious reaction to a film that had been trapped in development hell for literally decades.

Speaking of development, Rob Zombie famously wrote a script for a sequel called "The Crow 2037," which would have taken the series in a sci-fi direction,...

Image
Warner Bros. has shared thirteen new character posters from Ryan Coogler's Sinners, offering a fresh new look at the devlish heroes and villains set to feature in the upcoming horror thriller.

While not much is yet known about the plot, save for the fact that Michael B. Jordan will be forced to square off with vampires, including his recently turned twin brother, which should only up the ante as he and a small group of survivors attempt to make it to daybreak.

When asked about his latest film, Coogler teased, “Sinners is a unique one. It’s genre fluid. There are vampires in the film, but it’s really about a lot more than just that. It’s one of many elements, I’ll say. I think we’re going to surprise people with it.”

Michael B. Jordan's Sinners Gets Official Rating, Sets New Mark for Director Ryan Coogler
Image
Director Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan are ready to enter the supernatural realm with their latest feature-length collaboration, Sinners. The upcoming Warner Bros. blockbuster gets its official rating, one not associated with a Coogler movie since his first joint venture with his Black Panther franchise teammate.

According to FilmRatings.com,Sinners landed an R-rating heading into its spring release for strong bloody violence and sexual content. This marks new ground for Coogler as Sinners is his first R-rated film since 2013's Fruitvale Station, his critically acclaimed first project alongside Jordan.

Warner Bros. is banking on Coogler and Jordan's partnership to bear fruit again, considering the success of their previous work. 'You're Talking About Me:' Anthony Mackie Reveals How Eminem Made 8 Mile Rap Battle Personal
Image
Anthony Mackie has made a name for himself outside the superhero world, but 2025 came with his first leading solo film, Captain America: Brave New World, where he took the shield as the titular character. However, his first role featured a different face-off.

Mackie made his debut in 2002's 8 Mile, which starred Eminem in the leading role. The musical drama is a semi-autobiographical story, following Eminem's Jimmy "B-Rabbit" Smith, an aspiring rapper who attempts to win a rap contest to find a better life. Mackie played his opponent, Clarence aka Papa Doc, the leader of the Free World group, and revealed during an appearance on the Pivot Podcast that Eminem used his personal details during their rap battle at the end of the film.

8 Mile drew inspiration from Eminem's real life, but the rapper also used information from Anthony Mackie's real life. Around the 12:00 mark, Mackie addressed the film,...

Anthony Mackie Remembers Eminem Using Personal Details in '8 Mile's Rap Battle
Image
There are many Marvel fans who have forgotten that, before becoming Captain America, Anthony Mackie once took on a very different kind of battle on screen – against Eminem in the Oscar-winning drama 8 Mile. Taking part in a rap battle with one of the greatest rap-stars of all-time can be a daunting task, but what made the scene ever more notable was that Eminem ensured that it included a very calculated and personal “attack” on Mackie himself.

In the 2002 drama, Mackie played Clarence, aka Papa Doc, the leader of the Free World rap group who takes on Eminem’s B-Rabbit in the movie’s climactic rap battle. What many people did not realize is that among the shots taken at Mackie’s character were not actually about the character, but some were personal shots taken at Mackie himself. However, it was not quite as malicious as it sounds. As Mackie...

Kim Basinger Reflects on Hollywood's Steamiest 80s Movie and Intimacy Coordinators
Image
Hollywood legend Kim Basinger has played every kind of character during her decade-long career. She's been the love interest of Batman, an unofficial Bond girl, and a Bdsm enthusiast, among many others. And while the actress has appeared as some sensual and provocative roles over her long career, she has a controversial view on the need for intimacy coordinators on movie sets.

The actor of films like Batman, 8 Mile, 9½ Weeks and L.A. Confidential, which earned her an Academy Award in 1998, opened up to Variety during a rare interview in which she spoke about her various roles. Basinger spoke about the experience of shooting 9½ Weeks, the steamy 1986 romantic drama co-starring Mickey Rourke where she plays a New York City girl who commits to a Bdsm-style relationship with another New Yorker. Think of an 80s version of Fifty Shades of Grey that didn't evolve from Twilight fan fiction.

Every Superhero in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Ranked

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is Marvel's newest animated series and has reintroduced the character to audiences all over the world. Originally planned to be an animated origin show starring an early version of McU's Peter Parker, the show quickly grew into its own idea, including characters like Norman Osborn and Doc Oc. With all these brand-new, exciting ideas came a lot of opportunities for different versions of characters, particularly heroes.

As the show does take place in a somewhat similar reality to the MCU, many of the heroes in this show bear a striking resemblance to characters whom audiences have already come to know and love. Including the Spider-Menace himself, the show is packed full of comic book heroes big and small.

“That was a f—king waste of time”: Sandra Bullock’s ‘Bird Box’ Conquered Netflix, but Trent Reznor Absolutely Hated ‘Phony’ Experience

Bird Box is easily one of the most significant films in Netflix’s history. With its excellent cast full of actors like Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes, Sarah Paulson, and even Machine Gun Kelly, the record-breaking film became a cultural phenomenon upon its release.

A still from Bird Box | Credit: Netflix

One would assume, considering its success, that everyone on the project had the time of their lives when they were making the film. However, it would seem that one part of the production was tirelessly unrewarding.

Even though the movie’s soundtrack was made by two members of the legendary band Nine Inch Nails, the experience was very frustrating for the two musicians.

Bird Box, Nine Inch Nails, and a very big roadblock

A movie is a lot more than the actors that star in it. Several important aspects of production can be the difference between a memorable and a forgettable project.

23 Years Ago, This Captain America: Brave New World Star Made Their Cinematic Debut Alongside One of Hip Hop’s Biggest Stars
Image
Anthony Mackie became one of Hollywood’s hottest stars with his lead role as Captain America in Captain America: Brave New World, which premiered on Feb 14. But Mackie has been part of the Marvel Universe since 2014, when he took on the role of Falcon (Sam Wilson) in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Although Steve Rogers gave him the shield already in Avengers: Endgame (2019), Mackie’s character, Sam Wilson, was unsure about taking on the role. After John Walker briefly became Captain America, Sam ultimately decided to embrace the title by the end of the Disney+ series.

In his 23-year screen career, Mackie has played diverse characters. He portrayed Harry Mitchell, a junior adjustment agent in The Adjustment Bureau (which earned him two award nominations), and Sergeant J.T. Sanborn in The Hurt Locker, for which he won in the “Best Ensemble Cast” category and was nominated as “Best Supporting Actor” at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Anthony Mackie Is Right — He Should Have Gotten an Oscar Nomination For This Explosive War Movie
Image
Campaigning for an Academy Award can often be a laborious process, as studio politics and preordained narratives often play a greater role in securing a nomination than the actual quality of a film or performance. Even though most film fans recognize that the Oscars are entirely subjective and often overlook some of the best work done in a given year, it can be disappointing for actors who would like to be awarded by a community of their peers. Anthony Mackiehas expressed his frustration with this and mentioned that he has had several performances that were unfairly snubbed. Although he has given great performances in films such as 8 Mile and Half Nelson, Mackie deserved a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his work in The Hurt Locker.

Anthony Mackie Explains Why Dating Is “Really Hard” as an Actor: “How Do You Trust Someone?”
Image
Who would have guessed playing an on-screen superhero actually doesn’t make finding love easier?

Anthony Mackie, who stars in the titular role in Captain America: Brave New World, recently told People magazine that being a famous actor makes dating “obsolete,” adding that “the idea of dating is really hard.”

“How do you trust someone? How do you put yourself in a position to be vulnerable? How do you know what someone really [wants] from you when all you want is to just be loved and appreciated? What does that look like?” he questioned.

However, Mackie isn’t in any rush to get into another romantic relationship, noting, “I’m older and I don’t do the apps.” He enjoys focusing on being a father to his four children, whom he shares with his ex-wife, Sheletta Chapital.

When he’s not working, the Twisted Metal actor also appreciates his time out of the spotlight,...

Anthony Mackie Reacts to Awards Snubs
Image
Anthony Mackie is one of the most prolific actors working today, appearing in several critically acclaimed, Oscar-winning films but never earning an Oscar nomination himself. Over 11 years, he has gone from a supporting hero (The Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) to being Captain America himself, now leading the franchise. He is about to headline Captain America: Brave New World, a movie opening in theaters right in the heart of awards season, which Mackie has a few words about.

While speaking with Esquire, Mackie spoke about his own feelings regarding awards season, weighing in with quite a bit of confidence about being overlooked. “It’s always apropos for me when awards season comes up. Because I know I’ve done at least four performances that could have been nominated — if not for a Golden Globe, then an Oscar or an Emmy,” Mackie said. However, being given the role of Captain...

Anthony Mackie has delivered plenty of award-worthy performances; whether it's 8 Mile, The Manchurian Candidate, Million Dollar Baby, The Hurt Locker, or even Netflix's Altered Carbon, he's impressed on screen time and time again.

However, he's frequently been overlooked and that's something the actor is well aware of.

10 Best Movies Like Legally Blonde
Image
For whatever reason, Hollywood doesn't produce movies like "Legally Blonde" anymore. Brightly colored, fun, and undeniably optimistic, this Reese Witherspoon comedy succinctly captures the zeitgeist of the early 2000s, and it now serves as a time capsule to a more innocent time when it felt possible for a fashion merchandising student to usurp the Harvard snobs and become a full-fledged lawyer. Truly, director Robert Luketic's upbeat tone, to say nothing of Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith's snappy script, is a key reason for the film's enduring success -- it's the perfect underdog tale, featuring a likable character worth rooting for and an uplifting message about staying true to yourself and persevering in the face of adversity.

"Legally Blonde" earned solid reviews from critics, earned a pair of Golden Globe nominations, including one for Witherspoon, made a killing at the box office, led to two sequels (and counting), and even spawned a musical.

Flamboyant Pop Star Robbie Williams Learns Humility Through Biopic Better Man
Robbie Williams
Pop icon Robbie Williams, known for his flamboyant stage presence and chart-topping hits, recently opened up about a humbling experience during the making of his biopic, “Better Man.”

In an exclusive interview with Collider, Williams revealed a clash of creative visions with director Michael Gracey over the film’s soundtrack. Initially, Williams, eager to showcase his musical prowess, championed a selection of high-energy, “banger” tracks.

Flamboyant Pop Star Robbie Williams Learning Humility Through Biopic Better Man

“I was sending these songs over, like, ‘That’s a banger. That’s a banger. You are wrong,'” Williams recounted, recalling his initial conviction. He even drew inspiration from Eminem’s experience with the “8 Mile” soundtrack, where the rapper reportedly insisted on using “Lose Yourself” despite initial reservations from the director.

However, as Williams later discovered, his initial instincts were misguided. “Then I saw the finished version, and I was like, ‘I...

Image
This week saw the 15th anniversary of the death of Brittany Murphy, and one of her co-stars took the occasion to remember her fondly.

Murphy died on December 20, 2009, and Katie O’Grady, who worked alongside her on her final film Something Wicked, described Murphy as being like “a little bird you wanted to be around and you wanted to help.”

O’Grady told People magazine that Murphy’s cast and crew were all concerned and mindful of Murphy’s physical and mental condition, and tried to be “soft” with her while on set. O’Grady recalled the late actress looking “frail” and noticeably “going through a hard time” while filming the movie.

And O’Grady told the magazine of Murphy: “She made moments and she created moments with everybody that she met to the best of her ability that she could with the energy that she had.”

Four underrated gems leaving Netflix in December
Image
Some heavy hitters are leaving Netflix at the end of the month. Jaws, 8 Mile, The Deer Hunter, and Psycho all sign off on December 31. That’s a combined nine Oscars and 18 nominations. If you haven’t seen any of them, I’d suggest you get them on your list Asap.

Jaws is simply one of the greatest American action films ever made. Many critics don’t even bother with the “one of the best” when referring to Psycho. It is often considered the very best American horror. 8 Mile is a standout musical biopic, unsurpassed in the world of hip-hop. And The Deer Hunter, though difficult, controversial, and ever so slightly dated by now, was still a vital Vietnam War movie that took Best Picture for 1978.

But there are also some minor gems saying goodbye. So, if you’ve already seen the above-mentioned titles, or if the prospect of...

Eminem Almost Starred in 'The Fast and the Furious'
Image
Marshall Bruce Mathers III, aka, Eminem, raps fast. He could also have been driving fast if fate had played out differently. In 1998, a Vibe magazine article "Racer X" by Ken Li, was published, detailing an underground street racing operation in New York City. The story soon caught Hollywood’s interest. With the help of David Ayer, director Rob Cohen — a master of fortitude — put his stamp on the action-driven drama with heartwarming human interactions and tone-perfect characterization.

11 Guest Actors You Forgot Were On Boy Meets World
Image
The '90s was a complicated time to be a TV teen. While the kids of "Beverly Hills, 90210" and "Melrose Place" were entrenched in constant scandalous teen drama, a gentler, more family-friendly version of teen life was drawing in audiences on ABC. "Boy Meets World" ran for an impressive 158 episodes, from 1993 to 2000, and remains a pop cultural touchstone — albeit not quite as potent of one as its cattier primetime counterparts — to this day.

Like every memorable sitcom, "Boy Meets World" knew how to pick a guest star, and several of the actors who showed up across its seven-season run went on to be pretty dang famous. In a few cases, people who were already big-name actors at the time also dropped in on the kids of John Adams High. If you watched the show at a young age, though, you'd be forgiven for not recognizing the industry veterans and...

Interestingly, Federico Fellini co-wrote this tale of two Neapolitan kids who embark on a ship to New York to escape Italy’s early postwar poverty with his frequent collaborator Tullio Pinelli, a writer on the Italian maestro’s “La Dolce Vita” and “8 1/2,” as well as other titles.

In the film Benson Miller plays the ship’s cook who, during their travels, takes the kids under his wing.

He spoke to Variety about being back in Italy more than a decade after working in Tuscany with Spike Lee on “Miracle at St. Anna”; why this movie, conceived by Fellini,...

Yukiko A.K.A is screening at Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival

Yukiko, a 29-year-old elementary school teacher in Tokyo, lives a rather normal life, dealing with her students and retaining a relationship with a fellow teacher. However, she is also disgruntled with her life, particularly when she realizes that she is not one among the favorite teachers in the school, while her relationship is not as fulfilling as she expects. As such, she channels her frustration in hip-hop, rapping at nights in a park along with some similar-minded friends. When she loses miserably in a rap fight, however, she realizes that she needs to make a change.

Debbie Nelson’s Cause of Death: Eminem’s Mom Passes Away at 69
Image
Sad news out of the music world today, as Eminem’s mother, Debbie Nelson, has passed away at the age of 69.

The rapper’s strained relationship with Debbie inspired several of his songs and some of the more harrowing scenes in his 2002 biographical film 8 Mile.

But the relationship between mother and son improved in recent years, and Debbie publicly congratulated Em on his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.

'Gladiator 2' is Denzel Washington's Highest Grossing Movie Ever
Image
In addition to Moana 2 and Wicked, Gladiator II played a significant role in making the Thanksgiving Day holiday frame one of the best the industry has seen in years. Even though it didn't see the larger grosses of the other two films, Ridley Scott's epic proved to be a consistent performer and is on the road to being a box office hit. While Paramount Pictures certainly has something to celebrate with the sequel's success, it turns out one of the film's stars, the legendary Denzel Washington, has a big reason to celebrate too. Even though the actor has been in his fair share of hits, Gladiator II has officially become the highest-grossing film of his career.

Per Collider, Gladiator II has grossed $320.2 million worldwide, making it the biggest box office earner of Washington's career. His previous record-holder was 2007's American Gangster, which earned $267 million globally. What these...

Is 8 Mile Based On A True Story?
Image
While the 2002 movie is fiction, the 8 Mile true story is so close to the life of star Eminem (Marshall Mathers) that it borders on being a biopic. Directed by Curtis Hanson with Scott Silver on screenwriting duties, 8 Mile stars hip-hop megastar Eminem as Jimmy Smith Jr., a struggling underground Detroit rapper trying to escape from his working-class routes using the local rap battle scene. Taking to the stage under the name B-Rabbit, Jimmys story in 8 Mile so closely mirrors Eminems life that many wonder how much of the 2002 movie is true.

The similarities between 8 Mile and Eminems life arent coincidental. The rapper was a key creative driving force behind the movie, collaborating with Scott Silver on the story and personally choosing director Curtis Hanson. A huge amount of the plot of 8 Mile rings true to Eminems early career, so while the 2002 movie is a work of fiction,...

Did You Know Eminem Was The First Choice To Play Brian O’Connor’s Role In Fast and the Furious? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

When it comes to best action franchises, few made a significant impact as The Fast and the Furious. What began as a film about car street racing quickly evolved into a saga of high-stakes espionage and extraordinary feats. As the franchise garnered immense popularity, the late actor Paul Walker became synonymous with protagonist Brian O’Connor. However, reports later revealed that rap legend Eminem was initially considered for the role.

With the last chapter of The Fast and the Furious saga slated for a 2025 release, the franchise’s legacy is highlighted towards its final stretch with one more trilogy. The final movie will also bring the original film back into focus, especially the characters and the chemistry between Dominic Toretto and Brian O’Connor. Despite their different backgrounds,...

‘Pedro Paramo’ Netflix Review: Mexican Magical Realism Drama Is Too Confused To Tell A Cohesive Story
Image
For the past few weeks, I have been watching stuff that is intentionally and confidently convoluted in an attempt to make it seem like the story is complex, even though it’s clearly not. It’s not like I am voluntarily picking out these projects. They’re all chosen randomly so that they can be covered during the week of their release. And despite the unmethodical nature of the choices, if a pattern shows up, then I think it’s a trend. Joker: Folie à Deux seemed like an ending explainer for the previous movie, but it alternated between what’s real and what’s not in the dumbest fashion imaginable. Teacup was like a wannabe From, which itself was a confounding trip. The Last Night at Tremore Beach was infuriating and baffling. The Man Who Loved UFOs, despite being a biography, was a whole lot of nothing. Then there was Caddo Lake,...
