For two years in a row, Deepika Padukone has kickstarted India’s box office with a bang: In 2023, the acclaimed actor and producer reunited with her Om Shanti Om co-star Shah Rukh Khan for espionage actioner Pathaan, which went on to take $76 million in India and crossed the $100 million global box office milestone without a China release. This year Padukone starred in Viacom/Marflix’s Hindi aviation actioner Fighter (from Pathaan director Siddharth Anand), which grossed $43 million globally in just 30 days.
“Of course, the success of a movie is important, and box office is important, and the awards and accolades are important, but for me, as a person, the time I’ve had with people and the experiences I have on the set of a film are the most important,” Padukone says.

While Vin Diesel is known as the protagonist of the Fast & Furious franchise, he had his breakthrough with the sci-fi film franchise The Chronicles of Riddick. Beginning with Pitch Black, the franchise spawned two more sequels, short films, and video games. Diesel even turned producer of the threequel after trading the rights for the franchise for a cameo in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.
The makers have now confirmed that a fourth film is in development. Diesel would be reprising his role as the mercenary Riddick in the film titled Riddick: Furya. The film would reportedly follow the character as he goes back to his homeworld, which finds its citizens fighting against a new monster.

Vin Diesel will begin production on the fourth installment of the Riddick franchise, Riddick: Furya, on August 26. The film will be shot in Germany, Spain, and the UK.
This follow-up to the sci-fi films Pitch Black (2000), The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), and Riddick (2013) reunites Diesel with writer and director David Twohy. Diesel will reprise his role as the anti-hero Richard B. Riddick, a dangerous escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the galaxy.
In Riddick: Furya, Riddick finally returns to his homeworld, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there, he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster. Some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.

Fierce protests: The 2024 Cannes Film Festival opens in less than a fortnight and is once again set to be the backdrop to fierce French labor protests. Zac revealed earlier this week that a collection of around 200 French film festival workers — a combination of Cannes workers and workers from other festivals across France — are planning protests during the event over pay. The group’s frustrations are two-fold: they are first rallying against the pay packages they receive from their employers, which they say are inadequate and do not account for arduous overtime hours frequently clocked due to job demands, while the second bone of contention is France’s unique unemployment insurance program for entertainment workers and technicians. Known as Intermittence de Spectacle, the scheme supports entertainment workers on...

Kenneth Huang was known for his particular taste in wine. Whether in his favorite corner of Cut, the Michelin-starred steakhouse at the Beverly Wilshire, or in the Peninsula Shanghai, Huang would summon a bottle of Opus One to the table. He would tell guests that he had a private reserve of the Napa Valley vineyard’s 2011 vintage, which retails for up to $2,000 a case. Someone who regularly dined with the financier says she drank so much Opus One that she got sick of the bourgeois Bordeaux.
If the wine was Huang’s signature, it was a footnote in a picture rendered to create a specific impression. An outsider in a town familiar with cautionary tales about Chinese riches, Huang was performative about his wealth in a way that put Hollywood power players at ease. He would allow them to think: if this man puts studio executives on private jets to...

Abel Ferrara is set to begin production on his latest feature, “American Nails,” a modern gangster story inspired by ancient tragedy that stars Asia Argento and Willem Dafoe, Variety has learned.
According to the producers, “American Nails” charts “the rise and fall of this modern Phaedra, in a tale set in the gangster world of primal violence, power and revenge. This no-holds-barred retelling of Euripides’ masterpiece pits Argento against the male-dominated remnants of power and entitlement in contemporary Italy.”
Written by Ferrara and Rossella De Venuto, pic is produced by Diana Phillips and Philipp Kreuzer for Rimsky Productions and Maze Pictures. Production is set to begin in Italy this summer.
“American Nails” marks Dafoe’s eighth collaboration with Ferrara, including the 2014 Venice biopic “Pasolini,” 2019 Cannes Film Festival selection “Tommaso” and 2020 Berlinale entry “Siberia.” Coming off his acclaimed performance in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar hopeful “Poor Things,” Dafoe will again team up...

Flashback: The #1 grossing film for January 2023 was “Avatar: The Way of Water.” In January 2022, it was “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Both films were #1 on the last weekend of the month as well as the first.
Contrast that with “Wonka” (Warner Bros.), which is a clear success headed for a worldwide gross of over $500 million — but isn’t remotely in the same league. That explains why January is more than 20 percent below last year, but this month has a chance to succeed if it does something entirely different.
Yes, 2024 needs franchise titles and sequels to carry their weight; “Dune Part 2,” “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” all arrive in March. However, to rise above the year’s grim $8 billion projection for domestic gross (down 12 percent from 2023), a whole slew of standalone titles must thrive.

Vin Diesel, star of the "Fast and Furious," "Chronicles of Riddick," and "XXX" franchises, has been accused of a number of crimes, including sexual battery, by a former assistant. In documents filed in Los Angeles and recently obtained by Vanity Fair, Asta Jonasson, a former production assistant at Diesel's company One Race, accused Diesel of sexual battery, discrimination on the bases of sex/gender, intentional infliction of emotional distress, fostering a hostile work environment, wrongful termination, retaliation, and obstruction of justice re: an attempted cover up. Plaintiffs named on the suit include not just Diesel but Samantha Vincent, Diesel's sister and the president of One Race, the company itself, and a number of anonymized employees of One Race.
The incident at the center of the suit allegedly took place on a late September night in 2010 at the St. Regis Hotel. Jonasson was made to wait until Diesel had finished "entertaining...

Since exploding into popular consciousness with XXX, a 2011 masterwork detailing his crazed life of sex, pills, and weed, Danny Brown has served as a lodestone for modern rap’s perilous embrace of hard drugs. The Detroit rapper utilized a manic, strangely hyper cadence seemingly fueled by too much Molly. More importantly, he created music with fearlessness, seemingly unconcerned with how the oft-conservative rap world perceived him. When Edm soared in popularity, he penned Old, a wildly exuberant 2013 valentine to getting wasted as an elderly thirtysomething Mc while collaborating with alt-pop...

20th Century has tapped Argentine director Pablo Trapero to direct an adaptation of Olen Steinhauer’s best-selling spy thriller “The Tourist,” TheWrap has confirmed. Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe are producing.
The book’s plot is described as: “Milo Weaver has tried to leave his old life of secrets and lies behind by giving up his job as a ‘tourist’ for the CIA—an undercover agent with no home, no identity—and working a desk at the CIA’s New York headquarters. But staying retired from the field becomes impossible when the arrest of a long-sought-after assassin sets off an investigation into one of Milo’s oldest colleagues and friends.”
The original 2009 novel inspired three more sequels. It was not only a best-selling novel but also received heaps of praise, with Stephen King saying “The Tourist” was “the best spy novel I’ve ever read that wasn’t written by John le Carré.

Vin Diesel is a man of many franchises, some of which he himself has spearheaded. Alongside the hugely popular Fast & Furious, those franchises include the Pitch Black and XxX film series, the latter of which began his action star career. The initial 2002 film saw Xander Cage (Diesel) as an extreme sports enthusiast and rebellious stuntman working as a superspy for the National Security Agency, which tasked him to infiltrate a terrorist organization. The third film in the trilogy came in 2017’s xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, which saw Diesel return to the enter stage following the unsuccessful 2005 sequel starring Ice Cube. The Return of Xander Cage made over $346 million worldwide off a $85 million budget. Although a fourth film was announced by Diesel and director D.J. Caruso with The H Collective and Diesel’s own One Race Films production company, there’s currently a lawsuit preventing the movie from going forward.

Today, we proudly launch Strike Talk with Billy Ray and Todd Garner, a weekly podcast dedicated to dissecting the issues that caused talks to break off between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, this week prompting the writers to trade their pencils for picket signs.
A reckoning is upon us as writers try to keep their place at a moment when studios and streamers struggle to impose economic efficiencies to show fiscal responsibility to their shareholders, and writers struggle with things like streaming deals that have no chance for backend compensation in success, and series that have far fewer than the 22 episodes that had been the norm on the traditional networks.

Paramount Pictures has renewed a first-look deal with Todd Garner. The head of Broken Road Productions first signed a production pact with the studio in 2018.
Their only film since that time for Paramount has been “Playing With Fire,” a family-friendly Paramount Players release about a handful of macho firefighters having to look after two stranded kids amid a wildfire. The Jon Cena-led release earned $69.4 million worldwide on a $29 million budget. The company is in active development on a Rebel Wilson-starring tennis comedy titled “Double Fault.”
Among other recent projects not specifically with Paramount were New Line’s “Mortal Kombat” reboot and the direct-to-Hulu comedy “Vacation Friends,” both of which have spawned in-development sequels. Ganrer’s production track record goes back at least as far as Vin Diesel’s first “xXx” installment in the summer of 2022. That entry spawned an Ice Cube-led follow-up in 2005 and the 2017 global smash “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage...

If you’ve ever played Dungeons &. Dragons, you know it’s all about the melee combat. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves rolled a 20 by enlisting veteran stuntman Brad Martin to oversee the stunts and fights. Martin has worked on some of the biggest action franchises in cinema, including The Expendables, Underworld, xXx, The Matrix, and more. He was George Clooney’s stunt double for Batman & Robin, along with five other films. A comrade in arms with noted stuntmen-turned-directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, Martin is forging his own path as one of Hollywood’s top creators of action.
Den of Geek: You’ve been in the business for over 30 years. What new challenges did Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves bring for you?
Brad: I’ve done a few films with a lot of CGI and working with computer-generated creatures.

There is not a more fearless action star on the planet than Tony Jaa. Ever since making his bone-bruising debut in the relentlessly entertaining "Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior," Jaa's presence in a movie means you're in for full-tilt martial arts combat that's as punishing to film as it is exhilarating to watch.
Jaa earned the most valued seal of approval in the action filmmaking community when Jackie Chan called him "the most well-rounded of all action stars." Alas, Jaa was unable to realize the dream of acting alongside his hero in "Rush Hour 3" (which is for the best given the ghastly quality of the film), but the indestructible Thai star continues to press ever forward. His star has dimmed in recent years (e.g. he took supporting roles in Paul W.S. Anderson's "Monster Hunter" and the sci-fi Dtv effort "Jiu Jitsu"), but when you cast Tony Jaa, you...

The penultimate movie to star Filipina-American actress Bb Gandanghari, this adaptation of Carlo Vergara's cult graphic novel delivers a queer and utterly entertaining spectacle of grand gesture of love and self-acceptance.
Ada is a Pinoy transgender woman who works as a beautician with her assistant Didi, another trans woman, in a small country town. Even though the former is the guardian of her niece Aruba, she does not feel fulfilled since she longs for acceptance as a woman in the capital. Didi regularly fantasizes about Dodong, the handsome man next door. Meanwhile, Ada always gets rejected by her greedy partners.
Just as Ada is desperate to find love, she is hit on the head by a strange pink meteorite. Ada, confused despite the encouragement of Didi and Aruba, swallows it and then utters the word inscribed on it: “Zaturnah”. She then turns into a voluptuous redheaded...

Exclusive: Vin Diesel and David Twohy are reuniting for Riddick: Furya, the fourth installment of the action series that launched with the 2000 hit Pitch Black.
Twohy will direct his script. Diesel will star and produce under his One Race Films banner alongside Samantha Vincent, who will also produce.
Rocket Science and CAA Media Finance will launch worldwide sales at this week’s EFM.
In the new film, Riddick finally returns to his home world of Furya, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins by the Necromongers. But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new enemy. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.
Diesel and Twohy followed Pitch Black with 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick, and 2013’s Riddick.

It's hard to imagine the modern action movie landscape without Vin Diesel. Most impressively, Diesel has found success in franchises built from the ground up, including, obviously, "Fast and Furious" (and all of its title variations). And while his "Fast" films remain his most financially successful projects, Diesel produces a number of other original franchises. One of which is "xXx," another action-packed endeavor that debuted in 2002 a year after "Fast and Furious." Despite a more-than-decent box-office run, "xXx" never quite landed with the masses. That didn't stop Diesel from coming back to the franchise many years later with "xXx: Return of Xander Cage in 2017.
A film series known for its daring stunts, "xXx" helped solidify Diesel as a truly committed action star and producer that did whatever it took to capture the best, wildest action imaginable. I mean, his character literally evades a helicopter and its gunfire several times on...

The Supreme Court on Friday slammed producer Ekta Kapoor over objectionable content in her web series “XXX”. A bench of Justices Ajay Rastogi and C T Ravikumar said, “Something has to be done. You are polluting the minds of the young generation of this country…”
The bench added that the Ott (Over the Top) content was available to all and questioned her counsel as to “what kind of choice are you providing to the people?”
The bench made these observations after senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Kapoor, contended a plea was moved before the Patna High Court but chances are slim that the matter will be taken up soon.
At this, the bench said: “You are polluting the minds of youngsters.”
Rohatgi, however, submitted that the apex court had earlier granted protection to Kapoor in a similar matter and there is freedom of choice in the country. He further added that content is subscription based.

Exclusive: Operation: Kickboxer — a new series based on the Kickboxer action films — is in the works from executive producers Todd Garner (Mortal Kombat) and Dimitri Logothetis (Jiu Jitsu).
Gary Scott Thompson (The Fast and the Furious) will serve as showrunner, with Gary Marenzi’s Marenzi & Associates overseeing global co-production and distribution duties. While many may know Vin Diesel as the tank top-wearing, Corona-drinking man that's all about family from the "Fast & Furious" franchise, it's easy to forget that Diesel's reach goes well beyond just one franchise. Diesel has appeared in the MCU, led the "Riddick" series, and will even be in James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water" later this year. But there's another franchise that starred Diesel that launched around the same time as the "Fast & Furious" franchise.
In 2002, just a year after the inaugural film in the "Fast & Furious" franchise, "The Fast and the Furious, opened in theaters, another action film called "xXx" came out. American action movies produced during the early 2000s were a whole other breed. "xXx" followed in the wake of spy flicks like "Die Another Day" that wanted to appear more trendy to younger audiences, in addition to being one of the most eyebrow-raising movie titles to come across your browser history. Here Vin Diesel plays the appropriately named Xander Cage, an extreme sports stuntman turned secret agent with an affinity for breaking the rules and trying to look cool while doing it. If you've ever wondered what James Bond on Monster Energy would look like, "xXx" has you covered.
As a fascinating time capsule of its era, "xXx" boasts an impressive demonstration of practical stunts that are still pretty incredible to watch, even if the film itself leaves a lot to be desired. "xXx" never quite took off in the same way that "Fast and Furious" did though, despite launching two sequels.

Christina Aguilera is giving the gays everything they ever wanted. On Saturday, as she headlined LA Pride’s music fest at Los Angeles State Historic Park, Xtina brought the nostalgia as she was joined by Mya for a rendition of Moulin Rouge!‘s “Lady Marmalade.” She also brought out pop star Kim Petras for a silly performance of her song “XXX” and Paris Hilton to perform her hit “Stars Are Blind,” a WeHo staple.
“Oh my goodness. Thank you so much for having me tonight. I’m so honored and so grateful.

While numerous controversies have already plagued this year’s Oscars — pre-recording eight categories, not initially inviting “West Side Story” star Rachel Zegler, and snubbing both Lady Gaga and Denis Villeneuve — the presenters list is among the most baffling choice for some.
In what seems like a selection of simply the most famous people on the planet regardless of profession, skateboarding icon Tony Hawk is among this year’s presenters. This week, he weighed in on reactions to his and others’ presenting gigs at the 94th Academy Awards on March 27.

Hawk’s statement came after the announcement that music producer DJ Khaled, surfer Kelly Slater, and Olympic snowboarder Shaun White would serve as presenters, alongside 2021 Best Song Oscar winner H.E.R.,...
